The Science of Beach Lifeguarding (Paperback): Mike Tipton, Adam Wooler The Science of Beach Lifeguarding (Paperback)
Mike Tipton, Adam Wooler
R1,063 Discovery Miles 10 630 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

The World Health Organization's recently published Global Report on Drowning found that drowning is the third leading cause of unintentional injury death worldwide-making the information presented in this new book an important part of the global effort to reduce this health risk. Written by leading researchers and academics from around the world, The Science of Beach Lifeguarding focuses on the scientific evidence that underpins what is taught to and practised by beach lifeguards. It is the first book to pull together all the different areas involved in beach lifeguarding and evaluate their evidence base. An accessible and informative reference underpinned by the best current research, the book's key themes cover the context of beach lifeguarding, the physical environment in which lifeguards work, medical aspects, practical lifeguarding techniques, physiological standards for lifeguards, safety education, and future developments in beach lifeguarding. The book presents groundbreaking work quantifying the scientific rationale behind a universally accepted fitness standard. It supplies an in-depth examination of the risks and hazards associated with the beach environment, including rip currents and cold water immersion. The book includes a state-of-the-art review of drowning and a comprehensive chapter on first aid. Detailing the recently announced 2015 European Resuscitation Council Guidelines, this book is a must-have for beach lifeguards, beach lifeguard managers, search and rescue personnel, paramedics, sports scientists, health and safety practitioners, and occupational health practitioners.

Grant Cooper, Joseph Herrera, Jason Kirkbride, Zachary Perlman
R3,127 Discovery Miles 31 270 Ships in 10 - 17 working days

Regenerative medicine (RM) is a rapidly expanding topic within orthopedic and spine surgery, sports medicine and rehabilitation medicine. In the last ten years, regenerative medicine has emerged from the fringes as a complement and challenge to evidence-based medicine. Both clinicians and patients alike are eager to be able to offer and receive treatments that don't just surgically replace or clean old joints or inject away inflammation or work as a stop-gap measure. Regenerative medicine encompasses everything from the use of stem cells and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to prolotherapy, viscosupplementation and beyond. This book will provide healthcare practitioners dealing with spine and joint pain with the most current, up-to-date evidence-based information about which treatments work, which treatments don't, and which are on the horizon as potential game changers. Chapters are arranged in a consistent format and cover the spine, shoulder, elbow, hand and wrist, hip, knee, and foot and ankle, providing a thorough, top-to-bottom approach. A concluding chapter discusses current and future directions and applications of RM over the next decade or two. Timely and forward-thinking, Regenerative Medicine for Spine and Joint Pain will be a concise and practical resource for orthopedists, spine surgeons, sports medicine specialists, physical therapists and rehabilitation specialists, and primary care providers looking to expand their practice.

Manfred Lehmann, Carl Foster, Uwe Gastmann, Hans Keizer, Jurgen M. Steinacker
R4,190 Discovery Miles 41 900 Ships in 10 - 17 working days

This volume summarizes the proceedings of the Reisensburg workshop which took place at Reisensburg Castle in November 1997." The castle is built on the site of an - cient Roman compound and situated in the south of Germany at the Danube river. Sci- tists from Australia, Austria, Belgium, Estonia, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, South Africa, Switzerland, and the United States participated in the workshop. Like the 1996 workshop, the proceedings of which will be published in Medicine and Science in Sports and Ex- cise in 1998, the 1997 workshop also focused on the topic of overtraining in its widest sense to deepen our knowledge in this particularly sensitive field of sports science and sports practice. The authors see the present volume in a context with the proceedings p- sented by Guten (ed. ) "Running Injuries"; Saunders, Philadelphia (1997) and Kxeider, Fry, and O'Toole (eds. ) "Overtraining in Sport"; Human Kinetics, Champaign IL (1997). Overtraining, that is, too much stress combined with too little time for regeneration, can be seen as a crucial and threatening problem within the modern athletic community, of which significance can already be recognized reading daily newspapers: ." . . During the 1996 European championships, a gymnast shook his head almost imperceptibly, closed his eyes briefly and left the arena without looking up. He was fatigue personified. 'Suddenly, I just couldn't do any more. I just wanted to rest'." A look at his schedule showed why.

Stance and Motion - Facts and Concepts (Hardcover, 1988 ed.): V.S. Gurfinkel, M.E. Ioffe, J. Massion, J.P. Roll Stance and Motion - Facts and Concepts (Hardcover, 1988 ed.)
V.S. Gurfinkel, M.E. Ioffe, J. Massion, J.P. Roll
R4,239 Discovery Miles 42 390 Ships in 10 - 17 working days

This book dealing with stance and motion was planned in June 1986 at a meeting held in Moscow and Leningrad between a group of Soviet and French scientists interested in motor control. This meeting took place in the framework of an exchange program between the USSR Academy of Seiences and the French Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique. It was very successful event and was greatly appreciated by all those who attended it. Several participants put forward the proposal that the possibility of publishing a book was worth exploring. What were the reasons for publishing a book on stance and motion ? The interest aroused in the participants by each others contributions was not a sufficiently decisive argument. It was feit, however, that a large proportion of the orginal material presented at the meeting, especially in the field of posture and locomotion but also on other aspects covered by the book could be presented in a summarized form which should appeal to a larger audience because the facts and hypotheses they contained especially those from the Soviet participants, were not very familiar among international circles, and that many scientists would appreciate having a single volume containing a survey ofthe current state of research in this field. This was also the opinion of Plenum Press, who agreed to publish the book. Each participant at the meeting submitted a paper which was examined by two referees before being accepted.

The Physiology of Exercise in Spinal Cord Injury (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): J. Andrew Taylor The Physiology of Exercise in Spinal Cord Injury (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
J. Andrew Taylor
R5,192 Discovery Miles 51 920 Ships in 10 - 17 working days

Every year, around the world, between 250,000 and 500,000 people suffer a spinal cord injury (SCI). Those with an SCI are two to five times more likely to die prematurely than people without a spinal cord injury, with worse survival rates in low- and middle-income countries. Dynamic aerobic requires integrated physiologic responses across the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, autonomic, pulmonary, thermoregulatory, and immunologic systems. Moreover, regular aerobic exercise beneficially impacts these same systems, reducing the risk for a range of diseases and maladies. This book will present comprehensive information on the unique physiologic effects of SCI and the potential role of exercise in treating and mitigating these effects. In addition, it will incorporate work from scientists across a number of disciplines and have contributors at multiple levels of investigation and across physiologic systems. Furthermore, SCI can be considered an accelerated form of aging due to the severely restricted physical inactivity imposed, usually at an early age. Therefore, the information presented may have a broader importance to the physiology of aging as it relates to inactivity. Lastly, the need for certain levels of regular aerobic exercise to engender adaptations beneficial to health is not altered by the burden of an SCI. Indeed, the amounts of exercise necessary may be even greater than the able-bodied due to 'passive' ambulation. This book will also address the potential health benefits for those with an SCI that can be realized if a sufficient exercise stimulus is provided.

An Illustrated History of Health and Fitness, from Pre-History to our Post-Modern World (Hardcover, 2015 ed.): Roy J. Shephard An Illustrated History of Health and Fitness, from Pre-History to our Post-Modern World (Hardcover, 2015 ed.)
Roy J. Shephard
R6,063 Discovery Miles 60 630 Ships in 10 - 17 working days

This book examines the health/fitness interaction in an historical context. Beginning in primitive hunter-gatherer communities, where survival required adequate physical activity, it goes on to consider changes in health and physical activity at subsequent stages in the evolution of "civilization." It focuses on the health impacts of a growing understanding of medicine and physiology, and the emergence of a middle-class with the time and money to choose between active and passive leisure pursuits. The book reflects on urbanization and industrialization in relation to the need for public health measures, and the ever-diminishing physical demands of the work-place. It then evaluates the attitudes of prelates, politicians, philosophers and teachers at each stage of the process. Finally, the book explores professional and governmental initiatives to increase public involvement in active leisure through various school, worksite, recreational and sports programmes.
