Pathomechanics of Common Foot Disorders (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Douglas H. Richie Jr Pathomechanics of Common Foot Disorders (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Douglas H. Richie Jr
R3,729 Discovery Miles 37 290 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This new book consolidates the current knowledge of lower extremity biomechanics and pathomechanics and makes this information relevant to the study of common foot and ankle pathologies. The content is presented in a language and format that allows the clinician to review current evidence explaining the etiology of these disorders in order to formulate effective treatment interventions. In order to understand pathomechanics, the clinician must also become versed in the normal, healthy biomechanics of the lower extremity. A review of gait, muscle function and forces acting on the lower extremities during physical activity will be the focus of the first part of this book. The second part of the book will study the common, challenging pathologies treated on a daily basis by foot and ankle clinicians: hallux abducto valgus, hallux rigidus, metatarsalgia, digital deformities, adult acquired flatfoot, and plantar heel pain. These chapters discuss all the relevant factors contributing to these conditions, evaluating and exposing myths and misconceptions about the pathomechanics and treatments of these conditions. For each disorder, a comprehensive review of published research provides a foundation for an updated, valid description of etiology and risk factors. Providing a fresh approach to lower extremity pathomechanics and management strategies, Pathomechanics of Common Foot Disorders is a valuable resource for podiatrists and orthopedic foot and ankle surgeons at all levels.

This groundbreaking book presents a unique and practical approach to the evolving field of exercise oncology - the study of physical activity in the context of cancer prevention and control. Presenting the current state of the art, the book is sensibly divided into four thematic sections. Following an opening chapter presenting an overview and timeline of exercise oncology, the chapters comprising part I discuss primary cancer prevention, physical activity and survivorship, and the mechanisms by which these operate. Diagnosis and treatment considerations are discussed in part II, including prehabilitation, exercise during surgical recovery, infusion and radiation therapies, and treatment efficacy. Post-treatment and end-of-life care are covered in part III, including cardio-oncology, energetics and palliative care. Part IV presents behavioral, logistical and policy-making considerations, highlighting a multidisciplinary approach to exercise oncology as well as practical matters such as reimbursement and economics. Written and edited by experts in the field, Exercise Oncology will be a go-to practical resource for sports medicine clinicians, family and primary care physicians, oncologists, physical therapy and rehabilitation specialists, and all medical professionals who treat cancer patients.

Weedon's Way - The Pain-Free Way - A Swing for Golfers with Bad Backs (Paperback): Reeves Weedon Weedon's Way - The Pain-Free Way - A Swing for Golfers with Bad Backs (Paperback)
Reeves Weedon
R312 Discovery Miles 3 120 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

With back injuries in golf rising, there is clearly a need to investigate and resolve the problem via the biomechanics of the swing, rather than researching the technology of the clubs. Having worked with scientists and doctors with a historical interest in innovation within sporting techniques, at Northern Michigan University, Michigan State University USA, and Sports Surgery Clinic (Dublin), we have discovered that compared to the modern swing our revolutionary Weedon's Way swing creates significant less torque between the thorax and pelvis without loss of performance. In the modern swing, during the downswing the thorax accelerates whilst the pelvis decelerates. As a consequence the thorax and pelvis act in opposite directions; massive torque is inflicted on the lumbosacral spine mainly at L5/S1. In the Weedon's Way swing the thorax and pelvis travel at similar speeds reducing the aforementioned torque. In essence we remove the axis tilt i.e. body's side bend on the downswing. In the course of my project I have collated and reviewed 17 years of scientific research papers relating to low back pain in golf. The solution common to all papers is to play/practice less whilst performing core strengthening exercises. There has never been an evidence-based alternative until now. 'Swing Weedon's Way the Pain Free Way'.

The Female Athlete (Paperback): Rachel M Frank The Female Athlete (Paperback)
Rachel M Frank
R2,246 Discovery Miles 22 460 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Of all the important factors that must be considered when assessing and treating an athlete, the impact of patient sex is perhaps the most critical, yet historically has often been neglected. The "same injury" in a male patient may present differently, sometimes in subtle ways, than in a female patient and may require a different treatment approach. The Female Athlete, edited by Dr. Rachel Frank, provides concise, expert coverage of the ways in which common sports medicine injuries present in female patients versus male patients, describing recent literature analyzing sex differences in injury patterns and available treatment options. Provides a comprehensive review of key areas of importance related to care for women in sports, including the differences in care and treatment for male and female patients. Covers many of the most common injuries female athletes face, including ACL injuries, shoulder instability, concussion, stress fractures, female overuse injuries, and more. Considers prevention strategies, nutritional recommendations, as well as exercise recommendations for women during pregnancy.

Dr. Tommy John's invaluable guide to prevent and heal youth sports injuries Beginning as early as age 6 and continuing through the teenage years and on into their twenties, young athletes are more at risk of serious injuries at younger ages than ever before. Dr. Tommy John, son of lefty pitcher Tommy John and also a chiropractor, offers a practical guide to preventing and healing sports injuries. Dr. John explores the sudden rise of Tommy John surgeries being performed on young athletes today, as well as the many injuries--and the surgeries required to fix them-- increasing at an alarming rate in baseball and all youth sports. Dr. John's book outlines the three top causes behind this "injury epidemic": The American lifestyle, the business of youth sports (from coaches to corporations), and the mistakes we're making through lifestyle decisions. Maximize Your Kid's Sports Performance...and Minimize Injury shares the four key game-changers that will help prevent and heal injuries: Rethink, Replenish, Rebuild, and Recover. Each of these four sections includes a daily checklist that gauges how well young athletes are doing in each of the four areas. Though most of the book focuses on prevention, it also offers tips on how to tailor the advice for athletes coming back from an injury, with over 120 black and white photographs.

Giles R. Scuderi, Alfred J. Tria

Now revised and expanded into a major reference work, Scuderi and Tria bring together leaders in the field for this update of their classic 2010 text on minimally invasive surgery in orthopedics. Organized anatomically, each section has been reviewed and revised with the most current information and techniques, both common and complex. An entirely new section on analgesics and anesthesia is included, and the former section on the upper extremities is split into three distinct sections on the shoulder, elbow, and hand, respectively, for a more in-depth presentation of these areas. Subsequent sections on the hip, knee, foot and ankle, and spine are similarly reinforced with the state-of-the-art for each region. The final section is reworked to include not only computer navigation strategies but other innovative technologies in MIS as well. Now, as then, this is the go-to reference for orthopedic surgeons, residents and fellows seeking a practical understanding of minimally invasive techniques in orthopedics.
