Are you a triathlete, runner, cyclist, swimmer, cross-country
skier, or other athlete seeking greater endurance? The Endurance
Handbook teaches athletes how to stay healthy, achieve optimal
athletic potential, and be injury-free for many productive years.
Dr. Philip Maffetone's approach to endurance offers a truly
"individualized" outlook and unique system that he has refined over
three decades of training and treating athletes, ranging from world
champions to weekend warriors. Maffetone's training and racing
philosophy emphasizes building a strong aerobic base for increased
fat burning, weight loss, sustained energy, and a healthy immune
system. Good nutrition and stress reduction are also key to this
common-sense, big-picture approach. Dr. Maffetone also dispels many
of the commonly held myths that linger in participatory sports and
which adversely impact performance and explains the "truths" about
endurance, such as: The need to train slower to race faster will
enable your aerobic system to improve endurance Why expensive
running shoes can actually cause foot and leg injuries The fact
that refined carbohydrates actually reduce endurance energy and
disrupt hormone balance How overtraining can be avoided in its
earliest stages And much more! If you are looking to increase your
endurance and maximize your athletic potential, The Endurance
Handbook is your one-stop guide to training and racing effectively.

This book addresses instruments, methodologies and diagnostic
methods used to evaluate and diagnose human movement, locomotion
and physical status in general. Starting from historical
perspective, the idea of understanding human locomotion by applying
technical measurement devices and incorporating measurement data
into physical representation of gross body movement is presented
and explained, an approach known as inverse dynamics. With this
approach as a kind of umbrella concept, components of measurement
systems including relevant signal and data processing methods are
described. Modern instruments to capture body movement by measuring
its kinematics, kinetics and surface electromyography (sEMG) are
thus described; all systems being used dominantly-if not
exclusively-in a movement analysis laboratory setting. Focusing
mainly on human posture and gait, but including also examples of
movement patterns from selected kinesiological and sports
activities, the book attempts to present essentials of biomechanics
and biomedical engineering approach to this subject matter. It
illustrates how data collected and elaborated by modern engineering
technology can complement traditional expert knowledge of a
kinesiologist or a medical doctor. The book is applicable in the
fields of sports, physical activities, as well as in medical
diagnostics and rehabilitation. The examples of this book's
practical application might be in evaluation of efficiency of human
gait, in evaluation of skeletal muscle fatigue in physical
exercise, in biomechanical diagnostics of traumatological
conditions requiring orthopaedic treatment and the like. This book
can also be used in planning and executing research endeavours,
particularly in a clinical context as a reference for various
diagnostics procedures. It presents the lecture notes of a course
carrying the same name within Medical Studies in English at the
University of Zagreb for more than a decade.

changes were made throughout the text to highlight significant
advances in research and practices. These include areas such as
mental health of athletes, effects of COVID-19 on athletes,
mindfulness, legalized gambling, psychological issues surrounding
the 2020 Olympic Games (held in 2021), and drug controversies.
Foundations of Sport and Exercise Psychology provides students with
a unique learning experience—starting with an exploration of the
field’s origins, key concepts, research development, and career
options available in the field. After this introduction to the
field, the text shifts to personal factors that affect performance
and behavior in sport, physical education, and exercise settings.
It augments those concepts by factoring in situational
circumstances that influence behavior, group interaction and
processes, and the use of psychological techniques to help people
perform more effectively. Students will gain critical insights into
the role psychological factors play in health and exercise and the
psychological consequences of participation in sport and physical
activity, including children’s psychological development through
sport participation, aggression in sport, and moral development and
good sporting behavior in sport and physical activity contexts.
More than 100 related online activities offer interactive
opportunities to engage with the content—many of which can be
assigned, and progress tracked, by instructors directly through
HKPropel. In addition, chapter quizzes may also be assigned; these
are automatically graded to test comprehension of critical

'When it comes to training for climbing, you are your own
experiment.' Beastmaking by Ned Feehally is a book about training
for climbing. It is designed to provide normal people - like you
and me - with the tools we need to get the most out of our
climbing. It is written by one of the world's top climbers and a
co-founder of Beastmaker. It features sections on finger strength,
fingerboarding, board training, mobility and core, and includes
suggested exercises and workouts. There are insights from some of
the world's top climbers, including Alex Honnold, Shauna Coxsey,
Adam Ondra, Alex Puccio and Tomoa Narasaki. Free from jargon, it is
intended to provide enough information for us to work out what we
need to train, and to help us to train it.

Regular physical exercise is associated with substantial health
benefits. Recent evidence not only holds for cardiovascular effects
promoting "physical health," but also for the central nervous
system believed to promote "brain health." Moderate physical
exercise has been found to improve learning, memory, and
attentional processing, with recent research indicating that
neuroprotective mechanisms and associated plasticity in brain
structure and function also benefit. Physical exercise is also
known to induce a range of acute or sustained psychophysiological
effects, among these mood elevation, stress reduction, anxiolysis,
and hypoalgesia. Today, modern functional neuroimaging techniques
afford direct measurement of the acute and chronic relation of
physical exercise on the human brain, as well as the correlation of
the derived physiological in vivo signals with behavioral outcomes
recorded during and after exercise. A wide range of imaging
techniques have been applied to human exercise research, ranging
from electroencephalography (EEG), magnetoencephalography (MEG),
near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
to positron emission tomography (PET). All of these imaging methods
provide distinct information, and they differ considerably in terms
of spatial and temporal resolution, availability, cost, and
associated risks. However, from a "multimodal imaging" perspective,
neuroimaging provides an unprecedented potential to unravel the
neurobiology of human exercise, covering a wide spectrum ranging
from structural plasticity in gray and white matter, network
dynamics, global and regional perfusion, evoked neuronal responses
to the quantification of neurotransmitter release. The aim of this
book is to provide the current state of the human neuroimaging
literature in the emerging field of the neurobiological exercise
sciences and to outline future applications and directions of
research.
America's children are joining-and quitting-youth sports in
record numbers. If kids can't find the fun in an activity, they may
try to find the way out. If an adult can't find the right tools,
they may not know the right words to say or the right actions to
take. In "Raising Your Game," authors Ethan J. Skolnick and Dr.
Andrea Corn present a guide adults can use to ensure the most
enjoyable and enriching youth sports experience for a child.
Through a combination of advice from more than 150 elite
athletes and time-tested sports psychology concepts, Raising Your
Game prompts parents to consider what really matters when it comes
to their kids and sports. From LeBron James to Shannon Miller,
Brandi Chastain to Jason Taylor, John Smoltz to Mary Joe Fernandez,
Sanya Richards-Ross to Torii Hunter, athletes from across the
sports spectrum discuss their setbacks and successes-what worked
for them and what didn't.
"Raising Your Game" discusses the types of guidance that can
ignite inspiration and foster participation, practice, and
progress, and which methods can create frustration and dejection.
It shows the difference a supportive parent can make by showing up,
showing interest and, at times, showing restraint.
