Designing Presence offers a unique insight into the training that
has helped people around the world to cultivate more presence in
both professional and personal settings. It explains the research
behind the method of Towards Vivencia, shares stories of how it has
been implemented and offers practical exercises to apply it in any
context. Presence is something that is often talked about but is
difficult to pin down. We have all experienced moments when we felt
one with what we are doing and with our environment. However, this
feeling is usually fleeting and we don't know when or how we will
experience it again. Towards Vivencia is the first methodology of
its kind to train performers to locate and replicate that specific
state of consciousness associated with presence and peak
performance. Based on over 20 years of experience, combined with
research in anthropology, philosophy and the latest advances in
neuroscience, Towards Vivencia enables performers to become fully
engaged with their experience in order to operate at their highest
possible level. This book aims to equip readers with the ability to
actively design their experiences and create lasting changes not
only in how they approach performance but also how they approach
their everyday lives.
In Runner as Hero, Jay Kimiecik becomes an athlete again-in his
case, a masters runner-as a way to revive his life. Kimiecik
explores the world of aging, training, and performing through a
self-experimental, self-reflective lens- merging science,
mythology, and performance psychology. On his heroic journey,
Kimiecik talks to aging experts, scientists, top-performing
athletes, and the ghost of legendary Steve Prefontaine. Kimiecik's
keen observations of everyday living and irreverent style take him
on a journey to find the hero within. The result is a fascinating,
inspiring tale about how the life as an athlete can serve as a
motivational metaphor for feeling alive and achieving nearly
anything.
The coaching profession is growing. According to the International
Coach Federation (ICF), coaching earns over $2 Billion per year in
US dollars. The proposed readership of this book is both
practitioners and scholars of executive coaching. It will also fill
the current gap of a universal textbook that can be used in higher
education coaching curriculum. The International Coach Federation
(ICF) conducts a global study every four years. The 2016 study
found that there are over 100,000 practitioners of coaching across
the world. It also found that almost all coach practitioners
received some form of coach specific training. There are over 1,500
ICF approved coach training programs. Currently, there is not a
consistent set of textbooks or resources that are used by these
programs. This textbook is for the developing coach practitioner as
well as the experienced coach practitioner that would like to
develop further. Coaching is an exciting and powerful skillset that
allows individuals to empower others and helps individuals to
generate awareness that opens the door for great levels of success.
The approach of this book is to look at the theoretical framework
of coaching as it applies to the actual practice of coaching others
and groups. It will also take the approach of covering the
comprehensive coaching curriculum that is ingrained in the 11 core
competencies of coaching and will also provide an overview of
building a coaching culture in an organization as well as how to
build an independent coaching business. The International Coach
Federation (ICF) 11 core competencies are the most widely accepted
coaching framework in the industry and profession of coaching. It
is important to ground practice in theory and research to bring
together the researched framework to help to inform the approach.
There is an old proverb that states: "Theory is when you know
everything but nothing works. Practice is when everything works,
but no one knows why." The approach of this book will enable the
student with the theory, the processes and the skills to coach in a
way that works, and to be able to understand the why behind the
success as well as make it replicable. It is the author's hope that
the readers of this book will find information that is relevant,
helpful and even challenging in ways that increase their personal
growth and development as coaches.

The Gutless Wonder is a true story of a young man faced with
terrific pressures from secrets about his family. He kept this
within himself and sought out the venue of playing high school
football. His determination and will to never quit made it possible
for him to achieve success under great physical and mental barriers
that could not be understood by most everyone around him. His
tragedies and accomplishments are detailed in the story and would
give others a path to imitate if faced with similar situations.

Crack Climbing by Pete Whittaker provides a single point of
reference for all crack climbing techniques, regardless of the
grade you climb. Pete is widely regarded as one of the best crack
climbers in the world, having made dozens of cutting-edge first
ascents and hard repeats, including the first ascent of Century
Crack (5.14b) in Canyonlands, Utah. In this book, Pete has drawn on

Gain insights from Lynn Hill, Alex Honnold, Barbara Zangerl, Peter
Croft and more. Master the craft and advance your climbing. It's
time to jam!
This book focuses on the need for an Eulerian formulation of
constitutive equations. After introducing tensor analysis using
both index and direct notation, nonlinear kinematics of continua is
presented. The balance laws of the purely mechanical theory are
discussed along with restrictions on constitutive equations due to
superposed rigid body motion. The balance laws of the
thermomechanical theory are discussed and specific constitutive
equations are presented for: hyperelastic materials;
elastic-inelastic materials; thermoelastic-inelastic materials with
application to shock waves; thermoelastic-inelastic porous
materials; and thermoelastic-inelastic growing biological tissues.
This book explores the understanding, description, and measurement
of the physical, sensory, social, and emotional features of
motorcycle and bicycle journey experiences in tourism. Novel
insights are presented from an original case study of these forms
of tourism in the Sella Pass, a panoramic road close to the
Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage Site. A comprehensive mixed-methods
strategy was employed for this research, with concurrent use of
quantitative and qualitative methods including documentation and
secondary data analysis, mobile video ethnography, and emotion
measurement. The aim was to create a holistic knowledge of the
features of journey experiences and a new definition of the
mobility space as a perceptual space. The book is significant in
that it is among the first studies to explore the concept of
journey experiences and to develop an interdisciplinary theoretical
foundation of mobility spaces. It offers a comprehensive
understanding and a benchmarking of the features of motorcycling
and cycling journey experiences, a deeper market knowledge on
motorcycling and cycling tourists, and a set of tools, techniques,
and recommendations for future research on tourist experiences.
This book examines the relationship between sport and religion with
regard to twenty-first century topics such as race, fandom,
education, and culture. The contributors provide new insights into
the people, movements, and events that define the complex
relationship between sport and religion around the world. A
wonderful addition to any academic course on religion, sports,
ethics, or culture as a whole.
The breadth of our moral experience is more extensive than has been
believed over the past several millennia. There is more to morality
than being honest and good, or aspiring to universal principles. In
fact, in many ways the morality of our distant ancestors bears a
remarkable resemblance to the moral experiences of modern athletes.
In A Moral Theory of Sports, ethicist Richard J. Severson brings
together stories from today's sports world and the moral practices
of hunter-gatherers to shed new light on both sports and morality.
Guided by anthropologists, biologists, neuroscientists, and others,
Severson discusses what the moral life actually looked like for
hunter-gatherer bands in the late Pleistocene epoch and argues that
the championing of group success that was the epitome of their
morality is the epitome of modern sports, as well. With fascinating
analogies and anecdotes from football, basketball, tennis, cycling,
and more, A Moral Theory of Sports offers a unique interpretation
of human nature and our love affair with sports.

Defining Sport: Conceptions and Borderlines is not about the
variations of usage of the term "sport." It is about the concept,
the range of activities in the world that we unite into one
idea-sport. It is through the project of defining sport that we can
come to understand these activities better, how they are similar or
different, and how they relate to other human endeavors. This
definitional inquiry, and the deeper appreciation and apprehension
of sport that follows, is the core of this volume. Part I examines
several of the standard and influential approaches to defining
sport. Part II uses these approaches to examine various challenging
borderline cases. These chapters examine the interplay of the
borderline cases with the definition and provide a more thorough
and clearer understanding of both the definition and the given
cases. This work is not meant to be the definitive or exhaustive
account of sport. It is meant to inspire further thought and debate
on just what sport is; how it relates to other activities and human
endeavors; and what we can learn about ourselves through the study
of sport. This book will be of interest to scholars in philosophy
of sport, history, communications, sociology, psychology, sports
management, cultural studies, and physical education.
Fierce debate has long loomed over Title IX, the landmark
legislation prohibiting sex discrimination in schools, whether in
academics or athletics. Since its inception, Title IX has inspired
both backlash and backlash-against-backlash commentary. Supporters
contend that the legislation is a long overdue measure in securing
equal opportunities for girls and women in America's school and
university athletics. Opponents argue that Title IX is nothing more
than a government-enforced quota system that is damaging men's
sports programs. Caught in the middle are the schools that struggle
to develop equitable sports programs for male and female athletes.
From the hard fought passing of Title IX in 1972 to the most recent
debates surrounding compliance, this encyclopedia explores the
significant individuals, schools, events, key concepts,
controversies, and legal cases revolving around Title IX and its
application in collegiate athletics. This encyclopedia, the first
of its kind, offers a comprehensive guide to various aspects and
wide ranging issues associated with Title IX and sports. With more
than 150 in-depth entries, this inclusive and authoritative
reference will appeal to students, scholars, and general readers
interested in both the historic framework and contemporary
implications of Title IX and academic athletics. Sample entries

Crazy-Proofing High School Sports examines the often troubling high
school sports phenomenon in two parts. Part one focuses on the
problems facing educators, students, and parents as they struggle
to make high school sports worthwhile. Few if any strategies for
improvement in education are effective without first knowing what
the real reasons are for failure. Part two offers solutions for
"crazy-proofing" high school sports. Schools have everything needed
to accomplish great feats via high school sports participation, and
now is the time for our educators to be the experts in their field.
Written in a language educators can understand, and with stories
everyone associated with high school sports will recognize,
Crazy-Proofing High School Sports offers real solutions to the real
problems hurting high school student athletes.
