Multiskilling for Television Production (Paperback): Peter Ward, Alan Bermingham, Chris Wherry Multiskilling for Television Production (Paperback)
Peter Ward, Alan Bermingham, Chris Wherry
R4,088 Discovery Miles 40 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Written by television trainers who run their own courses on Multiskilling, this book offers a comprehensive introduction to the broad range of skills and technical knowledge required in this industry. It details all the essential information you need to know, acting as an on-the-job reference source for everyday use.
For many broadcasting technicians, one of the biggest challenges in recent years has been the transition from a career working in a solo core skill such as camerawork or audio, to acquiring the experience and expertise of a range of production jobs. Many people are expected to work in a number of crafts and to equip themselves with a much wider range of television techniques than had been customary in the past.
Multiskilling has become an integral part of television culture, requiring that new entrants are competent in several specialist production skills. Multiskilling for Television Production concentrates on the techniques associated with news and magazine programme production, where most tecnhical operators are usually employed, but most techniques are shared across the whole spectrum of television and film making.
Anyone baffled by the range and scope of skills to be mastered will find this book invaluable.
*A complete guide to the skills, techniques and operational procedures for today's television environment
*A quick and easy reference for on the job use
*Covers the latest digital technology

Mr. Robot and Philosophy - Beyond Good and Evil Corp (Paperback): Richard Greene, Rachel Robison-Greene Mr. Robot and Philosophy - Beyond Good and Evil Corp (Paperback)
Richard Greene, Rachel Robison-Greene
R416 Discovery Miles 4 160 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Mr. Robot has been hailed, not only as one of the most haunting and unnerving dramas ever to appear on television, but also as the first accurate popular presentation of how computer hacking and cyberterrorism actually work. Mr. Robot and Philosophy is aimed at thoughtful fans of this addictive show who will welcome the opportunity to explore Elliot Alderson's world from a philosophical perspective. The developing story of Mr. Robot constantly raises ethical and metaphysical issues. What happens to our personal identity when it's extended into cyberspace and an array of electronic devices? Are we in control of our online lives or are we being controlled? What does our right to privacy mean in a world where millions of people can observe what we're doing and saying? Is a virtual currency true money and could it replace traditional money? Can there be healthy forms of drug addiction? Can some types of so-called mental illness be useful and beneficial? Does it make any sense to unleash destruction upon the existing corporate economic structures, and can we expect something better to emerge from the ruins of a digital meltdown?

It's Always Sunny and Philosophy - The Gang Gets Analyzed (Paperback): Roger Hunt, Robert Arp It's Always Sunny and Philosophy - The Gang Gets Analyzed (Paperback)
Roger Hunt, Robert Arp
R531 Discovery Miles 5 310 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Here, philosophers wittily and expertly uncover amazing philosophical insights from the endlessly fascinating TV show, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Greg Littmann shows how the values of the gang are the same as those of Homeric heroes. Christopher Ketcham argues that the Church should make Charlie a saint, partly because It's Always Sunny is "all about free will." Russ Hamer shows how closely the gang's activities comply with the scientific method. Kyle Alkema and Adam Barkman analyze the way the gang perceives happiness and how they try to get it. Charlotte Knowles considers whether Heidegger would consider members of the gang authentic or inauthentic -- and concludes that they're a bit of both. Skyler King examines the morality of the gang's behavior by the standard of how they respond to extreme suffering. Ethan Chambers agrees that each of the five central characters is a terrible person, but argues that they are not truly to blame for their actions. Fenner Tanswell demonstrates that many of the gang's wrong actions result not from immoral motives but from illogical thinking. And Robert Arp compiles a hilarious list of historical examples where people acted even more foolishly than the Philadelphia Five.

The playful personality, casual confidence, and smooth style of Dean Martin are celebrated by friend and colleague Lee Hale in this warm-hearted, delightful tribute. Hale worked alongside the beloved entertainer as musical director and eventually producer for NBC's The Dean Martin Show. For seventeen years, Hale brought Dean and hundreds of other stars into America's living rooms.

Every chapter of this engaging book covers a year of Dean's show, from the first season in 1965 when Hale was hired to find ways to boost the ratings, through the ascent in the Nielsens and years at the top in the late sixties and early seventies, and into the final years and the show's end in 1974. The Golddiggers, the Roasts, and the Specials round out this spectacular chronological parade of hilarious skits, heart-stopping duets, and enduring friendships. Backstage at the Dean Martin Show also features anecdotes about the hundreds of stars who worked with Dean, including: the Rat Pack, Johnny Carson, Ella Fitzgerald, Ann-Margret, John Wayne, Lucille Ball, Debbie Reynolds, Jerry Lewis, Jimmy Stewart, Angie Dickinson, Bette Davis, and many more.

This collection features 23 essays by young professional philosophers that examine crucial ethical and metaphysical aspects of the "Buffyverse" (the world of Buffy). In the tradition of the classic horror films, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" addresses ethical issues that have long fascinated audiences. This book finds the ethical and metaphysical lessons from a pop-culture phenomenon. Using the insights of such philosophers as Plato, Aristotle, Nietzche and Kant, the authors provide and entertaining introduction to the field. Television and Common Knowledge (Paperback): Jostein Gripstrud Television and Common Knowledge (Paperback)
Jostein Gripstrud
R1,267 Discovery Miles 12 670 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Television and Common Knowledge considers how television is and can be a vehicle for well-informed citizenship in a fragmented modern society. Grouped into thematic sections, contributors first examine how common knowledge is assumed and produced across the huge social, cultural and geographical gulfs that characterise modern society, and investigate the role of television as the primary medium for the production and dissemination of knowledge. Later contributions concentrate on specific tv genres such as news, documentary, political discussions, and popular science programmes, considering the changing ways in which they attempt to inform audiences, and how they are actually made meaningful by viewers.

Uses of Television (Hardcover, New): John Hartley Uses of Television (Hardcover, New)
John Hartley
R4,496 Discovery Miles 44 960 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Taking inspiration from Richard Hoggart's classic The Uses of Literacy, John Hartley considers the usefulness of both television and television studies. He re-reads the history of broadcast TV's earliest moments, tracing the critical reception television has received from the 1930s to the present. Uses of Television asks 'improper questions' about what television, and TV Studies too, have been for: about the effect of the vast, unknowable audience on television; about the role of television in promoting 'cultural citizenship' by means of 'transmodern teaching'; and about the effects of knowledge produced in the formal study of television.
Via a consideration of neglected aspects of media and domestic history, from the 1930s film Housing Problems to Clarissa Explains It All, from the fridge to Umberto Eco's daughter, Hartley argues that this much-maligned medium can be reassessed in a more positive light. 'Democratainment' and 'do-it-yourself citizenship' are the latest manifestations of a civic and cultural education that TV performs even as it entertains.

Uses of Television (Paperback, New): John Hartley Uses of Television (Paperback, New)
John Hartley
R1,244 Discovery Miles 12 440 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

How does television function within society? Why have both its programmes and its audiences been so widely denigrated? Taking inspiration from Richard Hoggarts classic study The Uses of Literacy, John Hartleys new book is a lucid defence of the place of television in our lives, and of the usefulness of television studies.
Hartley re-conceptualizes television as a transmodern medium, capable of reuniting government, education and media, and of creating a new kind of cultural teaching which facilitates communication across social and geographical boundaries. He provides a historical framework for the development of both television and television studies, his focus ranging from an analysis of the early documentary Housing Problems, to the much-overlooked cultural impact of the refrigerator.

The New Brazilian Mediascape - Television Production in the Digital Streaming Age (Hardcover): Eli Lee Carter The New Brazilian Mediascape - Television Production in the Digital Streaming Age (Hardcover)
Eli Lee Carter
R2,071 Discovery Miles 20 710 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In this book, Eli Carter explores the ways in which the movement away from historically popular telenovelas toward new television and internet series is creating dramatic shifts in how Brazil imagines itself as a nation, especially within the context of an increasingly connected global mediascape. For more than half a century, South America's largest over-the-air network, TV Globo, produced long-form melodramatic serials that cultivated the notion of the urban, upper-middle-class white Brazilian. Carter looks at how the expansion of internet access, the popularity of web series, the rise of independent production companies, and new legislation not only challenged TV Globo's market domination but also began to change the face of Brazil's growing audiovisual landscape. Combining sociohistorical, economic, and legal contextualization with close readings of audiovisual productions, Carter argues that a fragmented media has opened the door to new voices and narratives that represent a more diverse Brazilian identity. A volume in the series Reframing Media, Technology, and Culture in Latin/o America, edited by Hector Fernandez L'Hoeste and Juan Carlos Rodriguez.

Nothing General About It - How Love (and Lithium) Saved Me On and Off General Hospital (Paperback): Maurice Benard Nothing General About It - How Love (and Lithium) Saved Me On and Off General Hospital (Paperback)
Maurice Benard
R395 Discovery Miles 3 950 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Instant New York Times bestseller! The Emmy Award-winning star of General Hospital chronicles his astonishing and emotional life journey in this powerful memoir-an inspiring story of success, show business, and family, and his struggle with mental illness. "This shocking true story is General Hospital on anabolic steroids." - Mehmet Oz, M.D., Emmy Award-winning host of The Dr. Oz Show Maurice Benard has been blessed with family, fame, and a successful career. For twenty-five years, he has played one of the most well-known characters on daytime television: General Hospital's Michael "Sonny" Corinthos, Jr. In his life outside the screen, he is a loving husband and the father of four. But his path has not been without hardship. When he was only twenty, Maurice was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. In Nothing General About It, Maurice looks back to his youth in a small town and his tenuous relationship with his father. He describes how his bipolar disorder began to surface in childhood, how he struggled to understand the jolting mood swings he experienced, and how a doctor finally saved his life. For years Maurice was relentless in his goal to be a successful actor. But even after he "made it," he still grappled with terrifying lows, breakdowns, and setbacks, all while trying desperately to maintain his relationship with his wife, who endured his violent, unpredictable episodes. Maurice holds nothing back as he bravely talks about what it was like to be medicated and institutionalized, and of how he learned to manage his manic episodes while on the set of GH. Nothing General About It is also an incredible love story about an enduring marriage that demonstrates what those vows-for better, for worse, in sickness and in health-truly mean. Maurice also pays tribute to the community that has been there for him through thick and thin, and ruminates on the importance of both inherited and created family. A shocking, riveting, and utterly candid memoir of love, adversity, and ultimately hope, Nothing General About It offers insights and advice for everyone trying to cope with mental illness, and is a motivational story that offers lessons in perseverance-of the importance of believing in and fighting for yourself through the darkest times. Nothing General About It includes a 16-page insert featuring approximately 50 photographs.

Open TV - Innovation beyond Hollywood and the Rise of Web Television (Hardcover): Aymar Jean Christian Open TV - Innovation beyond Hollywood and the Rise of Web Television (Hardcover)
Aymar Jean Christian
R2,661 Discovery Miles 26 610 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

How the internet transformed television Before HBO's hit show Insecure, Issa Rae's comedy about being a nerdy black woman debuted as a YouTube web series The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl, her response to the absence of diverse black characters on the small screen. Broad City, a feminist sitcom now on Comedy Central, originated as a web series on YouTube, developed directly out of funny women Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson's real-life friendship. These unconventional stories took advantage of the freedom afforded outside the traditional television system: online. Open TV shows how we have left "the network era" far behind and entered the networked era, with the web opening up new possibilities for independent producers, entrepreneurs, and media audiences. Based on interviews with writers, producers, show-runners, and network executives, visits to festivals and award shows, and the experience of producing his own series, Aymar Jean Christian argues that the web brought innovation to television by opening up series development to new producers, fans, and sponsors that had previously been excluded. Online access to distribution provides creative freedom for indie producers, allows for more diverse storytelling from marginalized communities, and introduces new ways of releasing and awarding shows. Open TV is essential reading for anyone interested in the changing environment of television and how the internet can inspire alternatives to what's on TV tonight.

Grand Designs - Consumer Markets and Home-Making (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Aneta Podkalicka, Esther Milne, Jenny Kennedy Grand Designs - Consumer Markets and Home-Making (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Aneta Podkalicka, Esther Milne, Jenny Kennedy
R2,655 Discovery Miles 26 550 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This is the first academic book to examine the long running hit series Grand Designs, which occupies a significant place in the popular imagination internationally. The authors apply an empirically grounded, critical perspective to the study of television to reveal how people use the program in their everyday lives. The emphasis on everyday uses and meanings combines creatively with understanding the program theoretically, textually and in terms of its production structures. This position challenges framings of the popular lifestyle and factual television genre that has been dominated by a neoliberal or governmentality perspective for many years. Presented by British designer and writer, Kevin McCloud, Grand Designs follows the progress of home owners as they embark on design, renovation and building projects at almost always dizzying scales of endeavour. Understanding the program as both a text to analyse and a site of material impact, the book draws on interviews with production members, home renovators, building practitioners and audiences, as well as references to associated media formats to provide contextual depth to the analysis. The authors argue that, as a cultural object, the program is both shaped by and enacts social discourses of home-making, design value and taste. Navigating public, commercial and promotional logics, Grand Designs sparks new forms of cultural production and consumer markets.

The V-chip Debate - Content Filtering From Television To the Internet (Paperback): Monroe E. Price The V-chip Debate - Content Filtering From Television To the Internet (Paperback)
Monroe E. Price
R1,080 R811 Discovery Miles 8 110 Save R269 (25%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The V-chip is a highly significant part of the discussion about whether television (or broadcasting in general) deserves some special attention in terms of its accessibility to children, its particular power to affect conduct, and its invasiveness. But as this notion of filtering and labeling has caught the imagination of the regulator, the legislator, and all those who wish to consider new ways to alter bargaining over imagery in society, the very "idea" of the V-chip or its equivalent is moving across other technologies, including the Internet. The V-chip issue has also fueled the ongoing debate about violence and sexual practices in society, and how representations on television relate to those practices.
Although the initial concept of the V-chip is simple, its flow into the public realm raises so many extraordinary questions that the introduction and production of the chip virtually serves as a case study in problems of law and public policy. The very conceptualization of speech in society is being affected by this issue. Accordingly, the place of the V-chip in this debate is increasingly important; indeed, it may be argued that the V-chip's contribution to legal argumentation may be greater than its ultimate contribution to the relationship between children and imagery. Among the questions the contributors address are:
*What research basis is necessary to require a framework for labeling and rating?
*What relationship between government and the image-producing industries can be characterized--for constitutional and other reasons--as voluntary as opposed to coercive?
*Who should evaluate these images?
*To what extent should the evaluation process be centralized and/or distributed?
*What assessment is appropriate to evaluate whether the experiment is "successful?"
In addition to the V-chip's origin's in Canada and its further evolution in the United States, this book discusses the development of the V-chip and television rating systems in Europe, Australia, and throughout the world. It also includes essays which contrast the very different approaches in Canada and the United States in terms of the role of regulatory agency, industry, and government.

It describes step-by-step how to prepare and direct every familiar type of common programme format including interviews, discussions, reportage, music and dramatisations shot either on location or in the multi-camera studio. It is the essential reference handbook for any director confronted by a new programme format or the challenge of an unfamiliar technology. An appendix suggests plans for the most commonly encountered studio situations. Peter Jarvis is a freelance producer and director of thirty years practical experience. He is Director of Television Training International and was for eight years Senior Production Instructor with BBC's Television Training Department.

This edited collection offers an interdisciplinary study of Twin Peaks: The Return, the third season of a TV program that has attracted the attention (and appreciation) of spectators, fans, and critics for over two decades. The book takes readers into several distinct areas and addresses the different approaches and the range of topics invited by the multidimensionality of the subject itself: the philosophical, the artistic, the socio-cultural, and the personal. The eighteen chapters constituting the volume are academic in their approach to the subject and in their methodology, whether they apply a historical, psychoanalytical, film studies, or gender studies perspective to the text under examination. The variety and range of perspectives in these aforementioned chapters reflect the belief that a study of the full complexity of Twin Peaks: The Return, as well as a timely assessment of the critical importance of the program, requires both an interdisciplinary perspective and the fusion of different intellectual approaches across genres. The chapters demonstrate a collective awareness of the TV series as a fundamental milestone in contemporary culture.
