Edouard Glissant was a leading voice in debates centering on the
postcolonial condition and on the present and future of
globalisation. Prolific as both a theorist and a literary author,
Glissant started his career as a contemporary of Frantz Fanon in
the early days of francophone postcolonial thought. In the latter
part of his career Glissant's vision pushed beyond the boundaries
of postcolonialism to encompass the contemporary phenomenon of
globalisation. Sam Coombes offers a detailed analysis of Glissant's
thought, setting out the reasons why Glissant's vision for a world
of intercultural interaction both reflects but also seeks to
provide a correction to some of the leading tendencies commonly
associated with contemporary theory today.
By drawing on the opposing ideas of Carl Jung and Karl Marx, James
Driscoll's develops fresh perspectives on urgent contemporary
problems. Jung and Marx as thinkers, Driscoll contends, carry the
projections of archetypal complexes that go back to the hostile Old
Testament brothers Cain and Abel, whose enduring tensions shape our
postmodern era. Because Marxism elevates the group over the
individual, it is made to order for bureaucrats and bureaucracy's
patron archetype, Leviathan. Jungian individuation offers a
corrective rooted in the Judeo-Christian ethic's affirmation of the
ultimate value of free individuals. Although Marxism's promise of
justice gives it demagogic appeal, the party betrays that promise
through opportunism and a primitive ethic of retribution. Marxism's
supplanting the Judeo-Christian ethic with bureaucracy's "only
following orders," Driscoll maintains, has created the moral
paralysis of our time. As Jung and writers like Hannah Arendt,
George Orwell, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, and Elias Canetti have
warned us, the influence of our ever-expanding bureaucracies is a
grave threat to the survival of civilized humanity. The primary
issues Driscoll addresses include the natures of justice and the
soul, individuation and freedom, and mankind's responsibilities
within the planetary ecology. Religion, ethics, economics, science,
class divisions, immigration, financial fraud, abortion, and
affirmative action are also explored in his analysis of the
powerful archetypes moving behind Jung and Marx.
This first of a two-volume work provides a new understanding of
Western subjectivity as theorized in the Augustinian Rule. A
theopolitical synthesis of Antiquity, the Rule is a humble, yet
extremely influential example of subjectivity production. In these
volumes, Jodra argues that the Classical and Late-Ancient
communitarian practices along the Mediterranean provide historical
proof of a worldview in which the self and the other are not
disjunctive components, but mutually inclusive forces. The
Augustinian Rule is a culmination of this process and also the
beginning of something new: the paradigm of the monastic self as
protagonist of the new, medieval worldview. In this volume, Jodra
takes one of the most influential and pervasive commons
experiments-Augustine's Rule-and gives us its Mediterranean
backstory, with an eye to solving at last the riddle of socialism.
In volume two, he will present his solution in full, as a kind of
Augustinian communitarianism for today. These volumes therefore
restore the unity of the Hellenistic and Judaic world as found by
the first Christians, proving that the self and the other are two
essential pieces in the construction of our world.

For eighteenth- and nineteenth-century authors such as Burke,
Constant, and Mill, a powerful representative assembly that freely
deliberated and controlled the executive was the defining
institution of a liberal state. Yet these figures also feared that
representative assemblies were susceptible to usurpation, gridlock,
and corruption. Parliamentarism was their answer to this dilemma: a
constitutional model that enabled a nation to be truly governed by
a representative assembly. Offering novel interpretations of
canonical liberal authors, this history of liberal political ideas
suggests a new paradigm for interpreting the development of modern
political thought, inspiring fresh perspectives on historical
issues from the eighteenth to early twentieth centuries. In doing
so, Selinger suggests the wider significance of parliament and the
theory of parliamentarism in the development of European political
thought, revealing how contemporary democratic theory, and indeed
the challenges facing representative government today, are
historically indebted to classical parliamentarism.
This book presents a multidisciplinary perspective on chance, with
contributions from distinguished researchers in the areas of
biology, cognitive neuroscience, economics, genetics, general
history, law, linguistics, logic, mathematical physics, statistics,
theology and philosophy. The individual chapters are bound together
by a general introduction followed by an opening chapter that
surveys 2500 years of linguistic, philosophical, and scientific
reflections on chance, coincidence, fortune, randomness, luck and
related concepts. A main conclusion that can be drawn is that, even
after all this time, we still cannot be sure whether chance is a
truly fundamental and irreducible phenomenon, in that certain
events are simply uncaused and could have been otherwise, or
whether it is always simply a reflection of our ignorance. Other
challenges that emerge from this book include a better
understanding of the contextuality and perspectival character of
chance (including its scale-dependence), and the curious fact that,
throughout history (including contemporary science), chance has
been used both as an explanation and as a hallmark of the absence
of explanation. As such, this book challenges the reader to think
about chance in a new way and to come to grips with this endlessly
fascinating phenomenon.
Randall B. Bush analyzes the ways unacknowledged axiological
assumptions (e.g., about what is important, why human beings are
valuing creatures, and where the capacity to value comes from)
prejudice the perspectives and approaches of various academic
disciplines, especially in the social sciences and the humanities.
The disciplines of ethics and aesthetics provide the most useful
tools for a philosophy of value, but academic overspecialization
has compartmentalized and segregated these disciplines from others,
threatening to unravel the unity of conceptions of the moral and
the beautiful in human existence. Bush argues that a dialectical
approach to conflicts between ethics and aesthetics can point to a
broader, axiological vision--informed by a Trinitarian conception
of reality--in which the whole, a coherent theory of value, is more
than the sum of its parts.
