Transport and Development in the Third World (Paperback, New): David Simon Transport and Development in the Third World (Paperback, New)
David Simon
R1,312 Discovery Miles 13 120 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

It is widely acknowledged that transport is a necessary condition for development to occur. Transport issues have become highly contentious and politicised. This volume presents a balanced review of transport provision and the development process in the Third World. Providing a comprehensive survey of the range of transport modes and forms utilised in rural, urban and international contexts, the book examines the development implications of such choices, together with appropriate policies to address transport problems in the Developing World.
This is a stimulating and provocative text. Its distinctive structure and logic challenge conventional wisdoms, and raise key issues seldom addressed in transport courses.

Race to the Sky - The Wright Brothers versus the United States Government (Paperback): Stephen B. Goddard Race to the Sky - The Wright Brothers versus the United States Government (Paperback)
Stephen B. Goddard
R1,140 R726 Discovery Miles 7 260 Save R414 (36%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Everyone knows that the Wright brothers were the first to fly, but few people know that they were engaged in a David and Goliath struggle with their own Federal Government. President McKinley's administration decided to dedicate an unprecedented amount of money and to tap such men as Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell and Samuel P. Langley to make sure that the first flyers would be American. The Wright brothers refused financial support from the government for fear of the strings that might be attached to it, and resolved to go it alone. This book tells the story of the struggle between the Wright brothers and the Federal Government, and the raw ambition, high ideals, greed, and cloak and dagger tactics of each side. By 1903, the Federal venture was in its seventh year and the Wright brothers had been working nights and weekends often in secret for four years, but everything came to a head in eight tense days in December when the battle - and the fame and fortune that would follow - was decided and the Wright brothers emerged victorious.

Sustainable Railway Futures - Issues and Challenges (Paperback): Becky P Y Loo, Claude Comtois Sustainable Railway Futures - Issues and Challenges (Paperback)
Becky P Y Loo, Claude Comtois
R1,623 Discovery Miles 16 230 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Revitalizing railways as a major sustainable transport mode in modern societies faces many issues and challenges. This in-depth overview places the importance of railways in the wider context of comprehensive sustainability, which encompasses sustainable development, social and economic equity and community livability. Some scholars have described the 21st century as a period of renaissance for railways and suggest this transport mode can fulfil people's desire for high mobility with low negative environmental, social, economic and financial impacts. In light of these new expectations for railways, in both passenger and freight transport worldwide, this book offers the latest research insights on the renewed interest about railway expansions and their wide-ranging environmental, socio-economic and even political implications.

Mobility Patterns and Urban Structure (Paperback): Paulo Pinho, Cecilia Silva Mobility Patterns and Urban Structure (Paperback)
Paulo Pinho, Cecilia Silva
R1,558 Discovery Miles 15 580 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Despite extensive efforts to understand the overall effect of urban structure on the current patterns of urban mobility, we are still far from a consensual perspective on this complex matter. To help build agreement on the factors influencing travel behaviour, this book discusses the influence of alternative urban structures on sustainable mobility. Bringing together two existing and complementary methods to study the relationship between urban structure and mobility, the authors compare two case studies with distinct urban structures and travel behaviour (Copenhagen and Oporto). Of particular concern is the influence of urban structure factors, namely land use and transport system factors, and motivational factors related to the social, economic and cultural characteristics of the individual traveller. The research presented in this book highlights the relevance of centrality in travel behaviour and in more sustainable travel choices. Different operational forms of the centrality concept are revealed as important: it is shown that more sustainable travel can be influenced by several urban structure factors and that no particular combination is required as long as a certain level of centrality is provided. Finally, the book concludes that urban structure can, on the one hand, constrain and, on the other hand, influence travel choice.

Environmental Impact of Railways (Hardcover): T.G. Carpenter Environmental Impact of Railways (Hardcover)
T.G. Carpenter
R7,632 Discovery Miles 76 320 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

A renaissance in railways and the formal recognition of environmental priorities are both features of the last quarter of the twentieth century, but relatively little has been published about the individual and collective environmental impacts of railways. There is an urgent need to address the subject comprehensively. New railways are being planned in many countries and environmental assessment has become an essential element of planning. Most of the impacts of railways have existed for well over a hundred years and many of these continue to be relevant today. Some new issues, such as the operation of very fast trains or the routeing of tracks to carry them, require special attention. This book brings together the main planning and management issues concerning the way railways, established, newly-constructed, or upgraded, have an impact on the environment. It provides a step-by-step assessment of how the engineer, planner, environmental manager, transport specialist or railway operator should approach the resolution of railway development taking into account environmental priorities and the regulatory framework. Tom Carpenter brings a lifetime of first-hand management and consultancy experience to produce the first modern treatment of this important topic. Contents I. Institutional Challenges to Intermodal Transport and Logistics - Governance in Port Regionalisation and Hinterland Integration... Institutional Challenges to Intermodal Transport and Logistics - Governance in Port Regionalisation and Hinterland Integration (Paperback)
Jason Monios
R1,616 Discovery Miles 16 160 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

While the operational realities of intermodal transport are relatively well known, the institutional challenges are less well understood. This book provides an overview of intermodal transport and logistics including the policy background, emerging industry trends and academic approaches. Establishing the three key features of intermodal transport geography as intermodal terminals, inland logistics and hinterland corridors, Jason Monios takes an institutional approach to understanding the difficulties of successful intermodal transport and logistics. Key areas of investigation include the policy and planning background, the roles of public and private stakeholders and the identification of emerging strategy conflicts. Substantial empirical content situates the theoretical and practical issues in real-world examples via three detailed case study chapters (covering the USA, UK and Europe), making the book useful to students as well as practitioners desiring an understanding of how intermodal transport and logistics work in practice. The identified challenges to intermodal transport and logistics are used to demonstrate how competing port and inland strategies can inhibit the necessary processes of integration required to underpin successful intermodal transport. The book concludes with a look at the future of institutional adaptation that may enhance the capacity of freight actors to engage with intermodal transport developments.

Blueprint 5 - True Costs of Road Transport (Paperback): Olof Johansson, David Pearce, David Maddison Blueprint 5 - True Costs of Road Transport (Paperback)
Olof Johansson, David Pearce, David Maddison
R916 Discovery Miles 9 160 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Evidence has come to light regarding the impact of benzene emissions from road transport, the incidence of asthmatic attacks and the possible toll of particulate matter from diesel engines on human health. This book examines the issues and argues that, without a fundamental change in policy, it is inevitable that the transport sector will continue to impose increasing costs on the natural environment, human health and the economy. It also quantifies the external costs of road transport and suggests new measures, such as road pricing and financial incentives, to pave the way to a sustainable transport system.

Routledge Revivals: The Atlas of British Railway History (1985) (Hardcover): Michael Freeman, Derek Aldcroft Routledge Revivals: The Atlas of British Railway History (1985) (Hardcover)
Michael Freeman, Derek Aldcroft
R3,414 Discovery Miles 34 140 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

First published in 1985, this Atlas uses over 50 specially drawn maps to trace the rise and fall of the railways' fortunes, and is supported by an interesting and authoritative text. Financial and operating statistics are clearly presented in diagrammatic form and provide a wealth of information rarely available to the student of railway history. Freeman and Aldcroft provide the basis for a new understanding of the way in which the railways transformed Britain by the scale of their engineering works, by shrinking national space and reorganising the layouts of urban areas. Maps show the evolution of early wagon routes into the first railway routes, the frenetic activity of the 'Railway Mania' years, and the consolidation of these lines into a national network. This exciting presentation of railway development will interest the enthusiast as well as the more general student of British transport history.

Routledge Revivals: Industrial Dislocation (1991) - The Case of Global Shipbuilding (Hardcover): Daniel Todd Routledge Revivals: Industrial Dislocation (1991) - The Case of Global Shipbuilding (Hardcover)
Daniel Todd
R4,040 Discovery Miles 40 400 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

First published in 1991, this book offers a thorough examination of the decline of heavy industry in industrialised countries in the West, which focuses on problems in the shipbuilding industry. Todd argues that three points are central to its demise: industrial life cycles, the international division of labour and the energy crises of 1973. His work begins with despondency in western shipbuilding, going back as early as 1956, when Japan usurped Britain as the pre-eminent ship producer. The book goes on to explore international trade and industry in the second half of the 20th century, with analysis on industrial reorganisation and East Asian conglomerates, diversification with the marine industries, and shipbuilding in Brazil, India, and China.

Pricing in Road Transport - A Multi-Disciplinary Perspective (Hardcover, illustrated edition): Erik Verhoef, Michiel C. J.... Pricing in Road Transport - A Multi-Disciplinary Perspective (Hardcover, illustrated edition)
Erik Verhoef, Michiel C. J. Bliemer, Linda Steg, Bert Van Wee
R3,883 Discovery Miles 38 830 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Transport pricing is high on the political agenda throughout the world, but as the authors illustrate, governments seeking to implement this often face challenging questions and significant barriers. The associated policy and research questions cannot always be addressed adequately from a mono-disciplinary perspective. This book shows how a multi-disciplinary approach may lead to new types of analysis and insights, contributing to a better understanding of the intricacies of transport pricing and eventually to a potentially more effective and acceptable design of such policies. The study addresses important policy and research themes such as the possible motives for introducing road transport pricing and potential conflicts between these motives, behavioural responses to transport pricing for households and firms, the modelling of transport pricing, and the acceptability of pricing. Studying road transport pricing from a multi-disciplinary perspective, this book will be of great interest to transport policymakers and advisors, transport academics and consultants and students in transport studies.

Advances in Shipping Data Analysis and Modeling - Tracking and Mapping Maritime Flows in the Age of Big Data (Hardcover): Cesar... Advances in Shipping Data Analysis and Modeling - Tracking and Mapping Maritime Flows in the Age of Big Data (Hardcover)
Cesar Ducruet
R4,651 Discovery Miles 46 510 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Shipping flows - maritime 'footprints' - remain underexplored in the existing literature despite the crucial importance of freight transport for global trade and economic development. Additionally, decision-makers lack a comprehensive view on how shipping flows can be measured, analyzed, and mapped in order to support their policies and strategies. This interdisciplinary volume, drawing on an international cast-list of experts, explores a number of crucial issues in shipping data estimation, construction, collection, mining, analysis, visualization, and mapping. Advances in Shipping Data Analysis and Modeling delivers several key messages. First, that in a world of just-in-time delivery and rapid freight transit, it is important to bear in mind the long-term roots of current trends as well as foreseeable future developments because shipping patterns exhibit recurrent, if not cyclical and path-dependent, dynamics. Second, shipping flows are currently often understood at the micro-level of intra-urban logistics delivery and at the national level using commodity flow analyses, but this volume emphasizes the need to expand the scale of analysis by offering new evidence on the changing distribution of global and international shipping flows, based on actual data. Third, that this multidisciplinary approach to shipping flows can shed important light on crucial issues that go beyond shipping itself including climate change, urban development, technological change, commodity specialization, digital humanities, navigation patterns, international trade, and regional growth. Edited by experts in their field, this volume is of upmost importance to those who study industrial economics, shipping industries and economic and transport geography.

Transport Policy and Research - What Future? (Hardcover): Liana Giorgi, Ronald J. Phoryles Transport Policy and Research - What Future? (Hardcover)
Liana Giorgi, Ronald J. Phoryles
R2,517 Discovery Miles 25 170 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This title was first published in 2003. What is the meaning of "sustainable mobility"? Is there a European common transport policy? To what extent is policy relevant for transport developments? What is the contribution of European transport research? These are some of the questions and themes addressed in this study of transport policy and research. It addresses the dynamics surrounding policy formulation and implementation, the conflicts of interest underlying these processes at the regional, national and supra-national levels, the inherent contradictions of the ecological modernization discourse as it applies to transport, and the role of the public or the citizen in determining trajectories for future developments. The book distils the results of three projects that have been completed with the support of the European Commission under the Fourth Framework Transport RTD Programme, namely the TENASSESS, CODE-TEN and POSSUM projects. The majority of the contributions derive from the TENASSESS project.

Liana Giorgi, Alan Pearman, Annuradha Tandon, Dimitrios Tsamboulas
R3,054 R2,818 Discovery Miles 28 180 Save R236 (8%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This title was first published in 2002: There is a multitude of assessment methods available for analyzing and reporting on the impacts of policies, all with different underlying assumptions and a wide range of criteria. Since the 1950s, much research has gone into creating guidelines for policy analysis, yet only a small percentage of evaluation has been carried out on transport policy - and none by political scientists or social policy specialists. The editors of this volume recognize that European integration has seen a drive to bring policy evaluation on to the transport agenda and has increased demands for 'strategic assessments'. It has become apparent that to gain a fuller understanding of the success of a transport programme, a much more complex combination of analytical methods must be used, and a set of guidelines specifically for the field of transport must be developed. This book achieves this by bringing together a multidisciplinary team of analysts from throughout the EU to discuss in a much broader way the various types of assessment methods and how they can best be used to evaluate transport programmes and systems, both individually and in combination.

Alfonso Morvillo; Edited by Gennaro Ferrara
R2,336 R986 Discovery Miles 9 860 Save R1,350 (58%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This title was first published in 2002. In the last few decades, relationships within the transport and logistics industry have become more complex due to the rising importance of information and communication technology, the growth of just-in-time delivery and increasing globalization. Such changes call for new forms of training, both managerial and vocational, for the continued development of the industry. This detailed and enterprising volume focuses on the transnational integrated training FIT Project (Formazione Integrata Transnazionale) set up within the European Programme ADAPT, which brought together academics and professionals to boost transport and logistics in Southern Italy. The project highlights cultural, motivational and training differences among the companies studied and suggests proper strategies for human resource development. Through an original methodology, it advocates an innovative and modular training programme to meet the needs of expertise and flexibility within the sector. The results can be used by the industry in general as best practice operative guidelines.
