Transport and Developing Countries (Paperback, New): David Hilling Transport and Developing Countries (Paperback, New)
David Hilling
R1,739 Discovery Miles 17 390 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Impassable roads, poorly maintained railways, bankrupt airlines, congested cities, and inefficient ports -- how do these conditions inhibit the economic progress of developing countries? With case material from Latin and central America, Southeast Asia, and Africa, author David Hilling illustrates the differences in transportation strategies and structures between the developed and developing worlds. In examining such projects as inland waterways, ports, railways, roads, and air and urban transportation networks, Hilling emphasizes the relative importance of timing, location, technology, and decision making structures in each case, and then illustrates how these factors contribute to the success or failure of economic development strategies.

Institutional Challenges to Intermodal Transport and Logistics - Governance in Port Regionalisation and Hinterland Integration... Institutional Challenges to Intermodal Transport and Logistics - Governance in Port Regionalisation and Hinterland Integration (Paperback)
Jason Monios
R1,524 Discovery Miles 15 240 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

While the operational realities of intermodal transport are relatively well known, the institutional challenges are less well understood. This book provides an overview of intermodal transport and logistics including the policy background, emerging industry trends and academic approaches. Establishing the three key features of intermodal transport geography as intermodal terminals, inland logistics and hinterland corridors, Jason Monios takes an institutional approach to understanding the difficulties of successful intermodal transport and logistics. Key areas of investigation include the policy and planning background, the roles of public and private stakeholders and the identification of emerging strategy conflicts. Substantial empirical content situates the theoretical and practical issues in real-world examples via three detailed case study chapters (covering the USA, UK and Europe), making the book useful to students as well as practitioners desiring an understanding of how intermodal transport and logistics work in practice. The identified challenges to intermodal transport and logistics are used to demonstrate how competing port and inland strategies can inhibit the necessary processes of integration required to underpin successful intermodal transport. The book concludes with a look at the future of institutional adaptation that may enhance the capacity of freight actors to engage with intermodal transport developments.

Environmental Impact of Railways (Hardcover): T.G. Carpenter Environmental Impact of Railways (Hardcover)
T.G. Carpenter
R7,179 Discovery Miles 71 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A renaissance in railways and the formal recognition of environmental priorities are both features of the last quarter of the twentieth century, but relatively little has been published about the individual and collective environmental impacts of railways. There is an urgent need to address the subject comprehensively. New railways are being planned in many countries and environmental assessment has become an essential element of planning. Most of the impacts of railways have existed for well over a hundred years and many of these continue to be relevant today. Some new issues, such as the operation of very fast trains or the routeing of tracks to carry them, require special attention. This book brings together the main planning and management issues concerning the way railways, established, newly-constructed, or upgraded, have an impact on the environment. It provides a step-by-step assessment of how the engineer, planner, environmental manager, transport specialist or railway operator should approach the resolution of railway development taking into account environmental priorities and the regulatory framework. Tom Carpenter brings a lifetime of first-hand management and consultancy experience to produce the first modern treatment of this important topic. Contents I. Railways and Planning Introduction Environmental planning Railway planning Passenger traffic Freight II. Blueprint 5 - True Costs of Road Transport (Paperback): Olof Johansson, David Pearce, David Maddison Blueprint 5 - True Costs of Road Transport (Paperback)
Olof Johansson, David Pearce, David Maddison
R866 Discovery Miles 8 660 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Evidence has come to light regarding the impact of benzene emissions from road transport, the incidence of asthmatic attacks and the possible toll of particulate matter from diesel engines on human health. This book examines the issues and argues that, without a fundamental change in policy, it is inevitable that the transport sector will continue to impose increasing costs on the natural environment, human health and the economy. It also quantifies the external costs of road transport and suggests new measures, such as road pricing and financial incentives, to pave the way to a sustainable transport system.

First published in 1998, this title is part of the Bloomsbury Academic Collections series.

Transport Policy and Research - What Future? (Hardcover): Liana Giorgi, Ronald J. Phoryles Transport Policy and Research - What Future? (Hardcover)
Liana Giorgi, Ronald J. Phoryles
R2,371 Discovery Miles 23 710 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This title was first published in 2003. What is the meaning of "sustainable mobility"? Is there a European common transport policy? To what extent is policy relevant for transport developments? What is the contribution of European transport research? These are some of the questions and themes addressed in this study of transport policy and research. It addresses the dynamics surrounding policy formulation and implementation, the conflicts of interest underlying these processes at the regional, national and supra-national levels, the inherent contradictions of the ecological modernization discourse as it applies to transport, and the role of the public or the citizen in determining trajectories for future developments. The book distils the results of three projects that have been completed with the support of the European Commission under the Fourth Framework Transport RTD Programme, namely the TENASSESS, CODE-TEN and POSSUM projects. The majority of the contributions derive from the TENASSESS project.

Urban Road Pricing: Public and Political Acceptability (Hardcover): Martin J. Whittles Urban Road Pricing: Public and Political Acceptability (Hardcover)
Martin J. Whittles
R3,799 Discovery Miles 37 990 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Title first published in 2003. As more and more cities consider introducing urban road pricing schemes, this book describes, compares and contrasts arguments for and against using this transport policy instrument. It investigates the acceptability of various forms of road pricing schemes by examining and contextualising actual schemes and hypothetical scenarios. The resulting analysis provides a sociological theory of acceptability, carefully grounded in arguments about road pricing, which demonstrates how professional discourses diverge from publicly acceptable arguments. It also suggests ways in which consensus can be reached between the various road pricing options.

Mobility Patterns and Urban Structure (Paperback): Paulo Pinho, Cecilia Silva Mobility Patterns and Urban Structure (Paperback)
Paulo Pinho, Cecilia Silva
R1,470 Discovery Miles 14 700 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Despite extensive efforts to understand the overall effect of urban structure on the current patterns of urban mobility, we are still far from a consensual perspective on this complex matter. To help build agreement on the factors influencing travel behaviour, this book discusses the influence of alternative urban structures on sustainable mobility. Bringing together two existing and complementary methods to study the relationship between urban structure and mobility, the authors compare two case studies with distinct urban structures and travel behaviour (Copenhagen and Oporto). Of particular concern is the influence of urban structure factors, namely land use and transport system factors, and motivational factors related to the social, economic and cultural characteristics of the individual traveller. The research presented in this book highlights the relevance of centrality in travel behaviour and in more sustainable travel choices. Different operational forms of the centrality concept are revealed as important: it is shown that more sustainable travel can be influenced by several urban structure factors and that no particular combination is required as long as a certain level of centrality is provided. Finally, the book concludes that urban structure can, on the one hand, constrain and, on the other hand, influence travel choice.

Driving With Music: Cognitive-Behavioural Implications (Paperback): Warren Brodsky Driving With Music: Cognitive-Behavioural Implications (Paperback)
Warren Brodsky
R1,913 Discovery Miles 19 130 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book, the first full-length text on the subject, explores the everyday use of music listening while driving a car. It presents the relationship between cars and music in an effort to understand how music behaviour in the car can either enhance driver safety or place the driver at increased risk of accidents. A great deal of work has been done to investigate and reduce driver distraction and inattention, but this book is the first to focus on in-cabin aural backgrounds of music as a contributing factor to human error and traffic violations. Driving With Music begins by outlining the automobile, its relationship to society, and the juxtaposition of music with the automobile as a complete package. It then highlights concepts from the fields of music perception and cognition, and, within this framework, looks at the functional use of background music in our everyday lives. Driver music behaviours - both adaptive and maladaptive - are explored, with the focus on contradictions and ill-effects of in-car music listening.

Automotive Global Value Chain - The Rise of Mega Suppliers (Hardcover): Wilson Kia Onn Wong Automotive Global Value Chain - The Rise of Mega Suppliers (Hardcover)
Wilson Kia Onn Wong
R4,206 Discovery Miles 42 060 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Today, some suppliers have grown increasingly powerful and in certain cases, earn revenues that rival or even exceed that of their automaker clients. In the pre-globalisation period, automakers wielded absolute power over their significantly smaller suppliers. This book reveals the upending of this relationship, with the gradual shift in the balance of power from automakers to their suppliers in this era of globalisation. The book examines how suppliers in the global tyres, seats, constant velocity joints (hereafter 'CVJs'), braking systems and automotive semiconductor industries have evolved into powerful oligopolies through a mix of acquisition and organic growth strategies. It also highlights how joint ventures could be strategically deployed as springboards to acquisition, as they enable firms to familiarise themselves with their partners' markets and operations. Moreover, the book analyses the disruption stirred by the entry of well-resourced technology titans into this industry and their inevitable clash with the traditional incumbents. This book is an invaluable reference for anyone interested in learning more about the automakers' and now their suppliers' relentless quest to create market-dominating intelligent driving systems.

The book includes a user's guide to the LOCDEV model and concludes with reflections on modelling and forecasting.

The Motor Car Industry in Coventry Since the 1890's (Hardcover): David Thoms, Tom Donnelly The Motor Car Industry in Coventry Since the 1890's (Hardcover)
David Thoms, Tom Donnelly
R3,783 Discovery Miles 37 830 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book, originally published in 1985, examines the development of the car industry in Coventry within both its local context and the wider economic environment. It is a study of expansion and adjustment which reflects the broader pattern of Britain's industrial history. The book analyses the emergence and early dominance of Coventry's motor manufacturers, the appearance of the volume producers in the 1920s and the instability of the post-war era. The relationship between cars and other sectors of the local economy, particularly cycles, machine tools and aircraft, is discussed, while the significance of the two world wars receive special attention. Extensive use is made of original sources material, much of which, prior to publication, had received little or no attention from business historians.

Strategic Adjustment of Price by Japanese and American Automobile Manufacturers (Hardcover): Kaye G. Husbands Strategic Adjustment of Price by Japanese and American Automobile Manufacturers (Hardcover)
Kaye G. Husbands

Sustainable Railway Futures - Issues and Challenges (Paperback): Becky P Y Loo, Claude Comtois Sustainable Railway Futures - Issues and Challenges (Paperback)
Becky P Y Loo, Claude Comtois
R1,530 Discovery Miles 15 300 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Revitalizing railways as a major sustainable transport mode in modern societies faces many issues and challenges. This in-depth overview places the importance of railways in the wider context of comprehensive sustainability, which encompasses sustainable development, social and economic equity and community livability. Some scholars have described the 21st century as a period of renaissance for railways and suggest this transport mode can fulfil people's desire for high mobility with low negative environmental, social, economic and financial impacts. In light of these new expectations for railways, in both passenger and freight transport worldwide, this book offers the latest research insights on the renewed interest about railway expansions and their wide-ranging environmental, socio-economic and even political implications.
