Landscapes of Mobility - Culture, Politics, and Placemaking (Paperback): Jennifer Johung Landscapes of Mobility - Culture, Politics, and Placemaking (Paperback)
Jennifer Johung; Edited by Arijit Sen
R1,837 Discovery Miles 18 370 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Our world is unquestionably one in which ubiquitous movements of people, goods, technologies, media, money, and ideas produce systems of flows. Comparing case studies from across the world, including those from Benin, the United States, India, Mali, Senegal, Japan, Haiti, and Romania, this book focuses on quotidian landscapes of mobility. Despite their seemingly familiar and innocuous appearances, these spaces exert tremendous control over our behavior and activities. By examining and mapping the politics of place and motion, this book analyzes human beings' embodied engagements with their built world and provides diverse perspectives on the ideological and political underpinnings of landscapes of mobility. In order to describe landscapes of mobility as a historically, socially, and politically constructed condition, the book is divided into three sections-objects, contacts, and flows. The first section looks at elements that constitute such landscapes, including mobile bodies, buildings, and practices across multiple geographical scales. As these variable landscapes are reconstituted under particular social, economic, ecological, and political conditions, the second section turns to the particular practices that catalyze embodied relations within and across such spaces. Finally, the last section explores how the flows of objects, bodies, interactions, and ecologies are represented, presenting a critical comparison of the means by which relations, processes, and exchanges are captured, depicted, reproduced and re-embodied.

Airline E-commerce Book Structure

Book Description

Online travel is big business and has become one of the most popular items purchased by consumers on the internet. According to one estimate, in 2012, approximately $313 billion or over one third of total B2C travel was spent on online travel products with air travel alone accounting for 61% or $191 billion. A variety of contributing factors is responsible for this development:

  • the emergence of the commercial internet in the mid-1990s;
  • a change in the behavior of consumers who through inexpensive internet access and growing familiarity with easy-to-use technology today shop 24/7 from anywhere in the world;
  • airline companies use the internet not only as a new platform to service, sell and market but by cutting traditional supply channels and reaching directly to the end consumer - also to realize cost savings in their sales and distribution value chains;
  • the arrival of new intermediaries in the form of online travel agencies, meta search engines, network affiliates, and other mass sales and marketing websites that distribute travel products to the public;
  • the growing prevalence of mobile platforms and social media allowing for new unprecedented forms of interactivity with shoppers of travel products.

Airline companies everywhere have integrated electronic commerce or e-commerce into their business operations in various shapes and forms. Today, it is no longer a question of 'if' for an airline company but 'how' to deal with e-commerce and leverage it to enhance its competitiveness. With plenty of references to and examples of leading companies from the airline industry and beyond, this book discusses the critical success factors for an airline e-commerce strategy and the role of e-commerce in sales & distribution, marketing, and customer service. Furthermore, explored are the various organizational structures to manage e-commerce, the handling of day-to-day web site operations like site content management and security, the growing concerns surrounding web site privacy, emerging social media and mobile trends, and the role of e-commerce in managing airline emergency situations. This book is an introduction to the business & technology cross-over topic of airline e-commerce and could be of interest to students and practitioners alike - from the airline travel industry and beyond.

Complexity Science in Air Traffic Management (Hardcover, New edition): Andrew Cook, Damian Rivas Complexity Science in Air Traffic Management (Hardcover, New edition)
Andrew Cook, Damian Rivas
R5,174 Discovery Miles 51 740 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Air traffic management (ATM) comprises a highly complex socio-technical system that keeps air traffic flowing safely and efficiently, worldwide, every minute of the year. Over the last few decades, several ambitious ATM performance improvement programmes have been undertaken. Such programmes have mostly delivered local technological solutions, whilst corresponding ATM performance improvements have fallen short of stakeholder expectations. In hindsight, this can be substantially explained from a complexity science perspective: ATM is simply too complex to address through classical approaches such as system engineering and human factors. In order to change this, complexity science has to be embraced as ATM's 'best friend'. The applicability of complexity science paradigms to the analysis and modelling of future operations is driven by the need to accommodate long-term air traffic growth within an already-saturated ATM infrastructure. Complexity Science in Air Traffic Management is written particularly, but not exclusively, for transport researchers, though it also has a complementary appeal to practitioners, supported through the frequent references made to practical examples and operational themes such as performance, airline strategy, passenger mobility, delay propagation and free-flight safety. The book should also have significant appeal beyond the transport domain, due to its intrinsic value as an exposition of applied complexity science and applied research, drawing on examples of simulations and modelling throughout, with corresponding insights into the design of new concepts and policies, and the understanding of complex phenomena that are invisible to classical techniques.

Cruise Operations Management - Hospitality Perspectives (Hardcover): Philip Gibson Cruise Operations Management - Hospitality Perspectives (Hardcover)
Philip Gibson
R5,948 Discovery Miles 59 480 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Cruise Operations Management provides a comprehensive and contextualised overview of hospitality services for the cruise industry. As well as providing a background to the cruise industry, it also looks deeper into the management issues providing a practical guide for both students and professionals alike. A user-friendly and practical guide it discusses issues such as: * The history and image of cruising * How to design a cruise and itinerary planning * Roles and responsibilities on a cruise ship * Customer service systems and passenger profiles * Managing food and drink operations onboard * Health, safety and security Cruise Operations Management presents a range of contextualised facts illustrated by a number of case studies that encourage the reader to examine the often complex circumstances that surround problems or events associated to cruise operations. The case studies are contemporary and are constructed from first hand research with a number of international cruise companies providing a real world insight into this industry. Each case study is followed by questions that are intended to illuminate issues and stimulate discussion. The structure of the book is designed so the reader can either build knowledge cumulatively for an in-depth knowledge of managerial practices and procedures onboard a cruise ship, or they can 'dip in' and make use of specific material and case studies for use within a more generic hospitality or tourism learning context.

Sustainable Railway Engineering and Operations (Hardcover): Simon Blainey, John Preston Sustainable Railway Engineering and Operations (Hardcover)
Simon Blainey, John Preston
R4,070 R3,851 Discovery Miles 38 510 Save R219 (5%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Railways are frequently promoted as one of the most sustainable modes of transport. However, their impact will in practice be significantly affected by the ways in which they are designed, constructed, and used. This book provides a comprehensive overview of the issues involved in planning, engineering and operating sustainable railway systems. It introduces and examines a wide range of aspects of railway systems and their interrelationships with other human and natural systems. For each of these aspects it considers the key factors that affect the sustainability of the railway. Students, academic researchers and those in rail industry or related fields who are interested in railways or in transport sustainability more generally will find this to be an invaluable guide. It will be particularly helpful to those who are either relatively new to the railway context, or who have a detailed knowledge of one aspect of railways but are seeking to acquire a more holistic understanding of railway systems.

The Interstate Commerce Commission and the Railroad Industry - A History of Regulatory Policy (Hardcover, New): Richard D Stone The Interstate Commerce Commission and the Railroad Industry - A History of Regulatory Policy (Hardcover, New)
Richard D Stone
R2,923 Discovery Miles 29 230 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This work explores the philosophy, actions, and policies of the Interstate Commerce Commission by focusing on the development of its railroad regulation practices, particularly since 1976. Richard Stone traces the radical change in the ICC's view of the rail industry, from the maximum control it exercised for many years through the unilateral deregulation that was begun in 1978. He considers the forces and pressures that contributed to the Commission's actions, including Congress, the president, the railroads, rail shippers, and academicians.

The book begins with two chapters that survey the history of the ICC and rail regulation through the mid-1970s. Stone then turns to the events of 1976, when the seeds of deregulation were sown with the election of Jimmy Carter and the passage of the Railroad Revitalization and Regulatory Reform (4R) Act. Subsequent chapters cover the years between the 4R Act and the Staggers Act, which were characterized by the Commission's changing attitude toward rail regulation; the background and provisions of the 1980 Staggers Act and the events that followed it; and the recent events and changes in philosophy that have taken place at the ICC with regard to the rail industry. This study, the first to be published on the ICC since 1976, follows that body's transformation from a powerful independent commission to a much smaller and less influential institution. The work will be a valuable resource for students of public policy, transportation studies, and political science.

Sustainable and Efficient Transport - Incentives for Promoting a Green Transport Market (Hardcover): Ellen... Sustainable and Efficient Transport - Incentives for Promoting a Green Transport Market (Hardcover)
Ellen Eftestol-wilhelmsson, Suvi Sankari, Anu Bask
R3,734 Discovery Miles 37 340 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This topical book examines the issues surrounding climate change and sustainability in relation to the freight transport sector. Written by an interdisciplinary team of contributors, the book approaches the topic from a multitude of perspectives, demonstrating that the sector will need to undergo significant changes in order to meet climate change targets. In addition to examining the challenges facing the transport sector, chapters also offer practical suggestions as to how the sector can achieve the required transformation. Legal methods are considered along with the application of new technologies and the implementation of alternative incentive structures as ways to promote sustainability and reduce emissions. Featuring contributions from leading authors from logistics, business, law and sustainability backgrounds, Sustainable and Efficient Transport demonstrates that a more integrated approach is needed at an EU level, to bring about the paradigm shift required for reducing transport emissions and making the sector more sustainable. This book will be a valuable resource for researchers working in both sustainability and transport. Lawyers, industry professionals and policy-makers will also benefit from insights in to the effectiveness of current policies and alternative solutions to contemporary challenges.

Commercial Distribution in Europe (Routledge Revivals) (Paperback): John Dawson Commercial Distribution in Europe (Routledge Revivals) (Paperback)
John Dawson
R699 Discovery Miles 6 990 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The physical distribution of products is an important element in the marketing operations of all productive enterprises, and in many cases efficient distribution is the most important single factor leading to success. With the emergence of post-industrial society the role of distribution has come to increasingly be viewed as a generator of wealth in the economy, attracting the interest of public policy makers anxious to influence investment, employment and efficiency in the sector. First published in 1982, this book isolates the major trends affecting the main institutions in distribution and contrasts the processes of change amongst the countries and regions of the European Economic Community. Structural change in the industry is related to spatial change in the regions and comparisons made of the varied public policy responses in member countries. An interesting and relevant reissue, this title will be of particular value to economics and business students with an interest in the development of the European consumer and post-industrial Europe.

Transport Policy: Learning Lessons from History (Hardcover, New Ed): Colin Divall, Julian Hine Transport Policy: Learning Lessons from History (Hardcover, New Ed)
Colin Divall, Julian Hine
R4,717 Discovery Miles 47 170 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The key aim of this volume is to demonstrate ways in which an understanding of history can be used to inform present-day transport and mobility policies. This is not to say that history repeats itself, or that every contemporary transport dilemma has an historical counterpart: rather, the contributors to this book argue that in many contexts of transport planning a better understanding of the context and consequences of past decisions and processes could lead to more effective policy decisions. Collectively the authors explore the ways in which the methods and approaches of historical research may be applied to contemporary transport and policy issues across a wide range of transport modes and contexts. By linking two bodies of academic research that for the most part remain separate this volume helps to inform current transport and mobility policies and to stimulate innovative new research that links studies of both past and present mobilities.

The Ocean Railway - Isambard Kingdom Brunel, Samuel Cunard and the Revolutionary World of the Great Atlantic Steamships... The Ocean Railway - Isambard Kingdom Brunel, Samuel Cunard and the Revolutionary World of the Great Atlantic Steamships (Paperback, New ed)
Stephen Fox
R471 R393 Discovery Miles 3 930 Save R78 (17%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

An epic social history of steamship travel from the 19th-century to the ‘Lusitania’, the ‘Mauretania’ and the ‘Titanic’. The great transatlantic steamships became emblems of an age, of a Victorian audacity of spirit-cathedrals to man's harnessing of new technology. Through the innovations and designs of key engineers and shipping magnates – Samuel Cunard, Isambard Kingdom Brunel and Edward Knights Collins – ‘the largest movable objects in human history' were created. To the wealthy, steamships represented glamorous travel, but to most they offered cheap passage out of Europe to the New World. At their peak, steamships delivered one million new Americans each year, transforming the world’s oceans from barriers into highways. In this fascinating history, Stephen Fox chronicles the tragedies that marked the evolution of the ocean liner, including the 1852 sinking of the ‘Arctic’, with the loss of three hundred and twenty-two lives, and the early 20th-century losses of the ‘Lusitania’ and the ‘Titanic’. Using contemporary records, diaries and writing, he penetrates the experience of transatlantic passage and examines the societies created on the vast floating cities, ‘a kind of third human environment, neither land nor sea but partaking of each, and bridging them in unprecedented ways’.

Commercial Space Exploration - Ethics, Policy and Governance (Hardcover, New Ed): Jai Galliott Commercial Space Exploration - Ethics, Policy and Governance (Hardcover, New Ed)
Jai Galliott
R4,582 Discovery Miles 45 820 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Not since man set foot on the moon over four decades ago has there been such passion and excitement about space exploration. This enthusiasm and eagerness has been spurred on by the fact that for the first time since the very beginning of the space age, space travel is no longer limited to an elite group of highly trained and well-disciplined military officers and test pilots. Instead, we must understand that the possibility of commercial space travel is already on our horizon and that it comes with a number of significant practical and moral challenges. Our level of scientific development and ability to influence international affairs and policy confers upon us an obligation to study the ethical, legal and social considerations associated with space exploration and understanding the potential consequences from the beginning is critical. This volume provides the first comprehensive and unifying analysis concerning the rise of private space exploration, with a view toward developing policy that may influence real-world decision making. The plethora of questions demanding serious attention - privatisation and commercialisation, the impact on the environment, health futures, risk assessment, responsibility and governance - are directly addressed in this scholarly work.

Landside | Airside - Why Airports Are the Way They Are (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Victor Marquez Landside | Airside - Why Airports Are the Way They Are (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Victor Marquez
R2,398 Discovery Miles 23 980 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Why do we love and hate airports at the same time? Have you been a victim of tiresome walks, congestion, long lines, invasive pat-downs, eternal delays and so on? Perhaps no other technological system has been challenged by continuously changing paradigms like airports. Think a minute on rail stations; think of how successful are the rail networks of the world in connecting nations, with just minimum security measures. Why aviation and airports are so radically different in this regard? In order to answer those questions the author embarks on a thorough revision of airport history and airport planning that in the end builds up a new theory about how airports are formed from the outset. Within its journey from the early airfield to the newest hubs of today, Dr. Marquez identifies for the first time the Landside-Airside boundary as the single most important feature that shapes an airport. In this sense, his finding challenges the "historical linearity" that, until today, used to explain a century of airports. From both an analytical and theoretical S&TS stance, Dr. Marquez assures that it is only when airports needed to be fully reinvented (LaGuardia, Dulles and Tampa) when they become transparent and we may be able to understand their lack of technological stability.

Critical Issues in Air Transport Economics and Business (Paperback): Rosario Macario, Eddy Van De Voorde Critical Issues in Air Transport Economics and Business (Paperback)
Rosario Macario, Eddy Van De Voorde
R1,675 Discovery Miles 16 750 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book offers material for strategic thinking featuring contributions from key figures in Europe, the US and Asia. The focus of the book expands from economic to legal issues, bankruptcy and safety and security. The carefully selected papers offer a thorough and structured analysis of major current developments in the air transport industry. Fully up to date, topics covered include competitive strength, capacity utilisation and risk. The most likely future scenarios are more or less known. Only, the timeframe remains uncertain. The speed at which the various market players in the air transport chain will implement their strategies remains the key question. This depends on a whole range of exogenous and endogenous variables, as this book aspires to demonstrate. As both an overview of the current issues affecting the industry and as a cohesive set of strategic documents, therefore, this collection will prove invaluable for policy makers and researchers alike.

Revitalizing railways as a major sustainable transport mode in modern societies faces many issues and challenges. This in-depth overview places the importance of railways in the wider context of comprehensive sustainability, which encompasses sustainable development, social and economic equity and community livability. Some scholars have described the 21st century as a period of renaissance for railways and suggest this transport mode can fulfil people's desire for high mobility with low negative environmental, social, economic and financial impacts. In light of these new expectations for railways, in both passenger and freight transport worldwide, this book offers the latest research insights on the renewed interest about railway expansions and their wide-ranging environmental, socio-economic and even political implications.

From Rail to Road and Back Again? - A Century of Transport Competition and Interdependency (Hardcover, New Ed): Colin Divall From Rail to Road and Back Again? - A Century of Transport Competition and Interdependency (Hardcover, New Ed)
Colin Divall; Edited by Ralf Roth
R4,599 Discovery Miles 45 990 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The coming of the railways signalled the transformation of European society, allowing the quick and cheap mass transportation of people and goods on a previously unimaginable scale. By the early decades of the twentieth century, however, the domination of rail transport was threatened by increased motorised road transport which would quickly surpass and eclipse the trains, only itself to be challenged in the twenty-first century by a renewal of interest in railways. Yet, as the studies in this volume make clear, to view the relationship between road and rail as a simple competition between two rival forms of transportation, is a mistake. Rail transport did not vanish in the twentieth century any more than road transport vanished in the nineteenth with the appearance of the railways. Instead a mutual interdependence has always existed, balancing the strengths and weaknesses of each system. It is that interdependence that forms the major theme of this collection. Divided into two main sections, the first part of the book offers a series of chapters examining how railway companies reacted to increasing competition from road transport, and exploring the degree to which railways depended on road transportation at different times and places. Part two focuses on road mobility, interpreting it as the innovative success story of the twentieth century. Taken together, these essays provide a fascinating reappraisal of the complex and shifting nature of European transportation over the last one hundred years.
