Antiparasitic drugs (ATH) are important tools widely used to
maintain animal welfare. As parasites impart a great impact on
animal health, these drugs are often essential for the expression
of the full genetic potential of production. However, despite the
initial success, after years of massive use of anthelminthic drugs
, the increase in prevalence of resistant nematodes became a major
problem. Anthelmintics are commonly used to treat parasitic worm
infections not only in animals, but humans as well. Resistance to
anthelmintics is thought to be present in several helminth species,
yet it remains poorly studied. This books discusses topics such as
the clinical pharmacology of anthelmintics; the uses in human and
veterinary medicine; animal resistance to ATH; and the efficacy of
Neem and Pawpaw products against Oesophahostomum spp infection in
pigs.
Dairy goats have long been considered an important source of income
for rural populations, providing the opportunity for profitable and
sustainable diversity for small farms. Their importance is also
increasing in intensive feeding systems and in large farms. They
are highly adaptable due to their unique feeding habits and have
become popular livestock animals in a range of environments, from
temperate grasslands to subtropical, semi-arid and mountainous
areas. Moreover, goat milk products are finding a growing
acceptance in the world market and research has increased in
feeding strategies for improved productivity and quality. Examining
all aspects of dairy goat feeding and nutrition, this book
represents a long awaited review of recent scientific research and
updated techniques. Chapters discuss aspects such as the modelling
and production of goat's milk as well as the estimation of nutrient
requirements and food intake of goats.
This book is a compilation of manuscripts that encompass a breadth
of information from different species including rodents, dogs,
cows, goats, and sheep. Normal developmental processes are covered
and anatomical features are discussed, as well as the impact and
significance of environmental chemicals and epigenetics on the
mammary gland. In terms of disease states, cancer and mastitis are
the most impactful in the fields of human medicine and livestock
management, respectively, in the context of mammary gland biology.
Therefore, this book presents in depth analyses of these diseases
over several chapters and different model systems. Rodent and
canine cancer models are discussed, which are very relevant in
understanding the roles that genes and the environment play in
human breast cancer. In the livestock industry, mastitis in the
dairy sector has a deep economic impact globally, and results in
over a billion dollar loss annually. Several chapters are devoted
towards this disease in dairy cattle, sheep and goats, with an
underlying theme of generating newer detection strategies to detect
infections at an earlier stage. An up-to-date description of the
most important signaling pathways and mechanisms that impact both
development and disease are included. A gamut of sub-disciplines
are found throughout the book that covers the main aspects of
anatomy, physiology, cell biology, genetics, and molecular biology
in both development and diseases of the mammary gland.

This book is contemporary, topical and global in its approach, and
provides an essential, comprehensive treatise on bovine
tuberculosis and the bacterium that causes it, Mycobacterium bovis.
Bovine tuberculosis remains a major cause of economic loss in
cattle industries worldwide, exacerbated in some countries by the
presence of a substantial wildlife reservoir. It is a major
zoonosis, causing human infection through consumption of
unpasteurised milk or by close contact with infected animals.
Following a systematic approach, expert international authors cover
epidemiology and the global situation; microbial virulence and
pathogenesis; host responses to the pathogen; and diagnosis and
control of the disease. Aimed at researchers and practising
veterinarians, this book is essential for those needing
comprehensive information on the pathogen and disease, and offers a
summary of key information learned from human tuberculosis
research. It will be useful to those studying the infection and for
those responsible for controlling the disease.

fluid therapy information together into a single, comprehensive
resource. Offering current information unique to horses on the
research and practice of fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base
disorders, the book is designed to be clinically oriented yet
thorough, providing detailed strategies tailored to equine
practice. With information ranging from physiology and acid-base
balance to fluid therapy for specific conditions, Equine Fluid
Therapy covers fluid treatments in both adult horses and foals,
highlighting the unique physiologic features, conditions, and
differences in foals. Well-illustrated throughout, the book begins
with an overview of the physiology of fluids, electrolytes, and
acid-base, then moves into practical information including
equipment, monitoring techniques, fluid choices, and potential
complications. A final section offers chapters on blood
transfusions, colloids, parenteral nutrition, and hemodynamic
monitoring. Equine Fluid Therapy is an essential reference for
equine practitioners, specialists, and researchers.
The Mononegavirales is an order of viruses affecting large, small
and marine animals and is responsible for diseases including
Rinderpest, Rabies and Ebola. This book discusses the epidemiology
and control of Mononegaviruses that pose a significant threat to
animals in terms of severity and epidemiological risk. The book
also addresses viruses with zoonotic potential, and many that can
be used as models in the study of infectious disease. With its
comprehensive coverage, each chapter is dedicated to a different
disease and has been authored by renowned scientists who have made
seminal contributions to the field. This prestige reference work is
arranged over two volumes: volume 1 pathobiology and molecular
diagnosis, and volume 2 molecular epidemiology and control. This
broad ranging text covers mononegaviral diseases of livestock,
horses, dogs and cats as well as rodents, primates, fish and marine
mammals, and will be a valuable reference source for virologists,
field veterinarians, infection and molecular biologists as well as
immunologists and animal scientists.
The North American Wildlife Conservation Model (NAM) is the driver
of a strong anthropocentric stance, which has legalized an ongoing,
annual exploitation of hundreds of millions of wild animals, who
are killed in the United States through trapping, hunting and other
lethal practices. Increasingly, the American public opposes the
killing of wild animals for recreation, trophies and profit but has
little-if any-knowledge of the Model. The purpose of this book is
to empower the public with knowledge about the NAM's
insufficiencies and to help expedite the shift from lethal to
compassionate conservation, an endeavour urgently needed
particularly under the threats of climate change, human population
growth and accelerating plant and animal species extinctions. With
a focus on trapping, this book exposes the NAM's belief in human
supremacy and its consequences for wild animals and their
ecosystems, the same value that is driving the ongoing global
destruction of nature and accelerating species extinction.
Motivated by a deep concern for wild animals who suffer and whose
lives are extinguished each year by 'sportsmen and women', this
book exposes the violent treatment of wild animals inherent in
governmental-promoted hunting and trapping programs, while
emphasizing the importance of empathy and compassion for other
animals in conservation and in our lives.
In this open access book, Angela K. Martin thoroughly addresses
what human and animal vulnerability are, how and why they matter
from a moral point of view, and how they compare to each other. By
first defining universal and situational human vulnerability,
Martin lays the groundwork for investigating whether sentient
nonhuman animals can also qualify as vulnerable beings. She then
takes a closer look at three different contexts of animal
vulnerability: animals used as a source of food, animals used in
research, and the fate of wild animals.Â
