Mark Purdey's life changed one day in 1984 when a Ministry of
Agriculture inspector told him he must administer a toxic
organophosphate pesticide to his dairy herd. Passionately committed
to organic farming and convinced of the harmful effects of
chemicals in the environment, he refused to comply. 'It was as if
my whole life became focused', he explained later. Before they had
a chance to prosecute, Purdey took the Ministry to court and won
his case. These experiences led him to challenge the orthodox line
on the origins of Mad Cow Disease and its human counterpart variant
CJD. Could the insecticide used in the official programme have
precipitated the spread of the disease?Purdey's quest to discover
the truth was hampered at every turn by government bureaucracies
and self-serving scientific cliques who sought to smear and
marginalize him. Dogged by dirty tricks and forced to work alone as
something of a scientific sleuth, he struggled to reveal hidden
interests and dangerous secrets. His supporters included many
members of the public, as well as Prince Charles and the poet Ted
Hughes. The latter wrote to him expressing 'a million
congratulations'.Increasingly sceptical of the official narrative,
Purdey was certain that toxic environmental factors would provide
answers, and so embarked on a self-funded worldwide odyssey to
investigate. "Animal Pharm" follows him on these eco-detective
trails to locations as diverse as Iceland, Sardinia, Colorado and
Australia. Purdey uncovers contamination from industry, munitions,
pesticides, nuclear experiments and natural geology, linking these
with the emergence of a range of neurodegenerative diseases. His
research is at once compelling and disturbing, helping to create a
paradigm shift in our understanding of the relationship of
pollutants to disease and health.
This guide was created especially for individuals performing
research with cats whose duties include animal facility management,
animal husbandry, regulatory compliance, and technical procedures
involved with their research. Basic information and common
procedures are presented in detail.

The issue of dog bites and dog aggression directed at humans is
frequently in the media. However, scientific research and evidence
on the subject is scattered and sparse, public and political
opinions are often misinformed and out of proportion to the extent
of the problem, and experts who have researched into the many
facets involved in the subject have not so far pooled their
knowledge together.Dog Bites aims to bring together expert
knowledge of the current situation from a wide variety of
disciplines to provide information to the many people and
professions affected by the issue. Subjects range from the
practical, medical, behavioural, sociological and theoretical, but
the overall approach of the book is to be objective and
integrative. Topics addressed include the genetic basis of
aggression, the public image of aggressive dogs, bite statistics,
risk factors, the forensics and surgical aspects of dog bites,
international legal perspectives, court evidence, first aid
treatment, zoonotic disease potential, behavioural rehabilitation
options, risk to children and a consideration of why some dogs
kill. All contributors are academic or long-standing professional
experts in their field and represent a wide spread of international
expertise. The issue is an important one for pet owners, vets,
animal shelters, and anyone who works with dogs, such as the
police. This book is a valuable resource for them as well as for
animal behaviourists, academic researchers, health professionals,
dog breeders and handlers. Please be advised that this book
contains strong images of the subject matter that some readers may
find distressing.

Fluid therapy is one of the most important, yet controversial,
aspects of therapy in veterinary medicine. Opinions differ as to
how best to provide fluid therapy in different disease states.
Recognizing these differences, the author provides guidelines for
the safe implementation of fluid and transfusion therapy in
clinical practice. The text first describes the physiologic fluid
compartments of the body and how fluid travels from place to place
within the body. Clinical chapters then deal with how to place and
maintain intravenous and intraosseous catheters, with crystalloids
and colloids, with transfusion medicine, with the diagnosis and
treatment of electrolyte disorders, and with shock and
resuscitation. Clinical cases reinforce the principles and concepts
described and the book is fully illustrated throughout. The Color
Handbook is designed to appeal alike to veterinary practitioners,
to technicians/nurses and to veterinary students.
