The age of steam and electricity has not been neglected by
publishers, infact there are enough books on Impressionism to pave
the South of France. But this volume genuinely stands apart. It
examines the vast and extraordinary collection of French art held
at The Hermitage. The works were almost all confiscated from
royalty, the Grand Dukes and wealthy merchant collectors by the Art
and Historical Commission of the Winter Palace hastily formed in
the wake of the 1917 revolution. The collection has remained intact
under the protection of the Soviet State ever since. The plates are
wonderful; firstly there are plenty of them, many haven't been
reproduced before and the standard of production is remarkable.
(Kirkus UK)
A comprehensive survey of the Hermitage Museum's collection of
French art from 1860 to 1950. This collection comprises paintings,
sculptures and drawings by many significant artists of this period,
as well as works by early Salon artists who were highly regarded in
their day but are now less well known. As well as the Monets,
Renoirs and Cezannes which make the Hermitage famous, this survey
features many works that are kept in storage at the museum, and
little-known images from the backs of some of the works. Throughout
the book, the author's informative commentary accompanies the
illustrations.
