Knowledge, Skills and Competence in the European Labour Market - What's in a Vocational Qualification? (Paperback):... Knowledge, Skills and Competence in the European Labour Market - What's in a Vocational Qualification? (Paperback)
Michaela Brockmann, Linda Clarke, Christopher Winch
R1,853 Discovery Miles 18 530 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

For the free movement of labour across the European Union, establishing transparency and comparability of qualifications across member states is vital.

This book examines how qualifications, knowledge, skills and competences are understood in different national contexts and trans-nationally and reveals a complex picture of differences and similarities both within and between countries. Against the background of EU policy initiatives, and in particular the European Qualifications Framework, an important focus is on the prospects and difficulties of establishing cross-national recognition of qualifications.

Drawing on case studies of particular sectors and occupations in England, France, Germany and the Netherlands, this insightful book, written by leading academics in the field, will be a vital resource for students and researchers involved with vocational education and training, continuing professional development, human resource management and European Union policy.

Manish Jain, Archana Mehendale, Rahul Mukhopadhyay, Padma M. Sarangapani, Christopher Winch
R1,304 Discovery Miles 13 040 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume examines how the public and private domains in school education in India are informed and mediated by current market realities. It moves beyond the simplistic dichotomy of pro-state versus promarket factors that define most current debates in the formulations of educational reform agendas to underline how they need to be interpreted in the larger context. The chapters in the volume present a series of conceptual and empirical investigations to understand the growth of private schools in India; investigate the largely uncontested claims made by the private sector regarding provision of superior quality of education; and their ability to address the educational needs of the poor. Further, the book looks at how the private-public dichotomy has been extended to professional identity of teachers and teaching practices as well. Rich in primary data and supported by detailed case studies, this volume will be of interest to teachers, scholars and researchers dealing with education, educational policy, school education and public policy. It will also interest policy makers, think tanks and civil society organisations.

Christopher Winch
R828 Discovery Miles 8 280 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This title, first published in 1990, engages in the current debates about the teaching of literacy and the reform of education. The Philosophy of Human Learning (Paperback): Christopher Winch The Philosophy of Human Learning (Paperback)
Christopher Winch
R1,551 Discovery Miles 15 510 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Philosophy of Human Learning addresses current concerns with the nature of human learning from a distinctive philosophical perspective. Using insights derived from the work of Wittgenstein, it mounts a vigorous attack on influential contemporary accounts of learning, both in the 'romantic' Rousseauian tradition and in the 'scientific' cognotivist tradition. These two schools, Professor Winch argues, are more closely related than is commonly realised.

Lorraine Foreman-Peck, Christopher Winch
R427 Discovery Miles 4 270 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book gives practical guidance on how educational research can inform professional practice. Written in a clear and accessible style, it details the way in which evidence based knowledge can be used to develop teaching and learning, bringing together a range of resources for all levels of reader but specifically designed to aid the progressive practitioner researcher. The authors draw on their experience of empirical work in education to provide thoroughly up-to-date reference material, including illustrative case studies, practical guidelines and exercises, and definitions of educational and research terms. The case studies and critical literature surveys have been chosen to demonstrate the use (and mis-use) of research evidence in thinking about a range of important topics in further and higher education, such as, learning styles, deep and surface learning, dyslexia in higher education, the assessment of group work, teaching critical thinking, problem based learning, and dissertation marking. Drawing on their philosophical backgrounds, the authors also address the much conceptual confusions which have led to scepticism regarding the wisdom or even the possibility of using research evidence to inform teaching. Other guidance includes: relating practitioner knowledge to educational research ethical and practical issues on research within the institution evaluating the strengths and limitations of research evidence researching ideas through the examination of case studies practitioner research and contributions to the knowledge base Using Educational Research to Inform Practice provides the necessary understanding for conducting research, thinking about its value and applying research evidence to practice in universities and colleges and therefore will be essential reading for those resource managers who are responsible for providing courses and support in higher education institutions. Education, Autonomy and Critical Thinking (Paperback): Christopher Winch Education, Autonomy and Critical Thinking (Paperback)
Christopher Winch
R1,379 Discovery Miles 13 790 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The concepts of autonomy and of critical thinking are of key importance in many contemporary accounts of the aims of education. Education, Autonomy and Critical Thinking analyzes their relationship to each other and to education, explores their roles in mortality and politics, and examines the part critical thinking has to play in fulfilling the educational aim of preparing young people for autonomy.

Assessing the significance of the concern with critical rationality as a key intellectual component for a worthwhile life involving autonomy, this book also examines important views about what critical thinking is and how it can be cultivated.

Drawing from discussions on epistemology and the philosophy of language which concern the nature of rationality, Christopher Winch produces a powerful critique of concepts central to contemporary philosophy of education - autonomy and critical thinking.

Linda Clarke, Christopher Winch
R5,481 Discovery Miles 54 810 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Vocational education and training (VET) have a key role to play in raising skill levels and improving a society's productivity. Key themes include:

  • the broader educational and social aims of VET

  • the historical development of VET in the UK, US, Australia, France, Germany, the Netherlands and elsewhere.

Graham Haydon; Harry Brighouse, Kenneth R. Howe, James Tooley; Series edited by Christopher Winch
R975 Discovery Miles 9 750 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This title considers the philosophical debates surrounding equality and education. "Educational Equality and the New Selective Schooling" by Harry Brighouse was initially published by the Philosophy of Education Society of Great Britain in 2000. In this new edition, Brighouse has updated his argument, Kenneth R Howe and James Tooley have contributed counter-arguments and Graham Haydon has provided a foreword and afterword drawing the debates together. The issues debated in this new edition of 'Educational Equality" include: What is Educational Equality? Why Does Educational Equality Matter? And is Educational Equality Possible? "Educational Equality" raises issues which will be of interest to all involved in educational equality, including teachers, policy makers and educationalists. This innovative series is addressed to practitioners and policy-makers. It highlights the critical perspectives that philosophy can bring to bear on current education policy and provides a lively discussion of the issues. It aims to stimulate debate and to contribute to better informed educational initiatives.

Dyslexia - Developing the Debate (Paperback): Julian. Elliott, Rod Nicolson Dyslexia - Developing the Debate (Paperback)
Julian. Elliott, Rod Nicolson; Edited by Andrew Davis; Series edited by Christopher Winch
R980 Discovery Miles 9 800 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Dyslexia is often presented as a clearly delineated condition that can be diagnosed on the basis of appropriate cognitive tests with corresponding forms on intervention. However, this approachable text explores the issues behind this assertion in bringing together leading figures in the field to debate dyslexia. Julian Elliott shows that understandings and usage of the dyslexia label vary substantially with little consensus or agreement and in putting forward his critique draws upon research in several disciplinary fields to demonstrate the irrationality of these arguments. Roderick I. Nicolson demonstrates that current approaches to understanding, identification and support of dyslexia are catastrophically flawed in terms of their failure to consider the developmental nature of dyslexia. He develops two themes: first that the underlying cause of dyslexia is 'delayed neural commitment' for skills and neural circuits, and second that the cause of the reading disability is the introduction of formal instruction before the dyslexic child's neural circuits for executive function are sufficiently developed. He argues that a more effective and cost-effective approach to identification and support involves 'assessment for dyslexia' rather than 'of dyslexia'. Elliott and Nicolson respond to the points each other raise before Andrew Davis investigates how far the key claims of Elliott and Nicolson can withstand close conceptual investigation, and explores the inherent limitations of scientific research on this topic, given the value and conceptual issues concerned.

Governance in Der Lehrerausbildung: Analysen Aus England Und Deutschland - Governance in Initial Teacher Education:... Dina Kuhlee, Jurgen van Buer, Christopher Winch
R1,940 Discovery Miles 19 400 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Governance in Initial Teacher Education: Perspectives on England and

Germany

This publication examines institutional structures in Initial Teacher Education (ITE) in England and Germany and changes to these prompted by political reform. Although there are parallels in the discourses concerning reforms to ITE in both countries, the focus and the outcomes of the reforms differ. The contributions to the book indicate that the micro-level implementation of educational governance measures appears to be more stringent in the English market-oriented structure than in the strongly state-regulated structure of the German Federal State."
