More Than I Love My Life - LONGLISTED FOR THE 2022 INTERNATIONAL BOOKER PRIZE (Paperback): David Grossman More Than I Love My Life - LONGLISTED FOR THE 2022 INTERNATIONAL BOOKER PRIZE (Paperback)
David Grossman
R240 R192 Discovery Miles 1 920 Save R48 (20%) Ships in 5 - 10 working days

An epic, deeply moving novel about the power of love and loving with courage - from the Man Booker International Prize-winning author of A Horse Walks into a Bar On a kibbutz in Israel in 2008, Gili is celebrating the ninetieth birthday of her grandmother Vera, the adored matriarch of a sprawling and tight-knit family. But festivities are interrupted by the arrival of Nina: the iron-willed daughter who rejected Vera's care; and the absent mother who abandoned Gili when she was still a baby. Nina's return to the family after years of silence precipitates an epic journey from Israel to the desolate island of Goli Otok, formerly part of Yugoslavia. It was here, five decades earlier, that Vera was held and tortured as a political prisoner. And it is here that the three women will finally come to terms with the terrible moral dilemma that Vera faced, and that permanently altered the course of their lives. More Than I Love My Life is a sweeping story about the power of love and loving with courage. A novel driven by faith in humanity even in our darkest moments, it asks us to confront our deepest held beliefs about a woman's duty to herself and to her children. 'Grossman's work resonates with emotional intelligence, humanity and truth' Irish Times

Strengthening Family Coping Resources - Intervention for Families Impacted by Trauma (Hardcover): Laurel Kiser Strengthening Family Coping Resources - Intervention for Families Impacted by Trauma (Hardcover)
Laurel Kiser
R4,220 Discovery Miles 42 200 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Strengthening Family Coping Resources (SFCR) uses a skill-building, multi-family group framework to teach constructive resources to families who have a high exposure to stress and trauma. As an intervention for high-risk families, SFCR can cause a reduction in symptoms of traumatic distress and behavior problems and help families demonstrate higher functioning. The SFCR manual is based on a systemic, family approach and uses empirically-supported trauma treatment that focuses on family ritual, storytelling, and narration, which improves communication and understanding within family members. The manual is organized into three accessible parts: * Part 1 details the theoretical and empirical foundations of SFCR * Part 2 focuses on implementation and the clinical guidelines for conducting SFCR * Part 3 contains session guidelines focused on the multi-family group versions of SFCR Each session included in the intervention is structured according to specific guidelines, and instructions provide examples of what facilitators might say to a group. Formed through the input of psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and anthropologists, Strengthening Family Coping Resources will help you reduce the symptoms of traumatic stress disorders and increase coping resources in children, adult caregivers, and the family system. It also provides a novel approach to addressing co-occurring traumatic reactions in multiple family members by including developmentally appropriate skill-building activities that are reinforced with family practice. For anyone working with families in a therapeutic capacity, this manual is a must-have resource.

Understanding and Healing Emotional Trauma - Conversations with pioneering clinicians and researchers (Hardcover): Daniela Sieff Understanding and Healing Emotional Trauma - Conversations with pioneering clinicians and researchers (Hardcover)
Daniela Sieff
R4,215 Discovery Miles 42 150 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Understanding and Healing Emotional Trauma is an interdisciplinary book which explores our current understanding of the forces involved in both the creation and healing of emotional trauma. Through engaging conversations with pioneering clinicians and researchers, Daniela F. Sieff offers accessible yet substantial answers to questions such as: What is emotional trauma? What are the causes? What are its consequences? What does it mean to heal emotional trauma? and How can healing be achieved?

These questions are addressed through three interrelated perspectives: psychotherapy, neurobiology and evolution. " Psychotherapeutic perspectives" take us inside the world of the unconscious mind and body to illuminate how emotional trauma distorts our relationships with ourselves and with other people (Donald Kalsched, Bruce Lloyd, Tina Stromsted, Marion Woodman). "Neurobiological perspectives" explore how trauma impacts the systems that mediate our emotional lives and well-being (Ellert Nijenhuis, Allan Schore, Daniel Siegel). And e"volutionary perspectives" contextualise emotional trauma in terms of the legacy we have inherited from our distant ancestors (James Chisholm, Sarah Blaffer Hrdy, Randolph Nesse).

Transforming lives affected by emotional trauma is possible, but it can be a difficult process. The insights shared in these lively and informative" "conversations can support and facilitate that process. This book will therefore be a valuable resource for psychotherapists, psychologists, counsellors and other mental health professionals in practice and training, and also for members of the general public who are endeavouring to find ways through their own emotional trauma. In addition, because emotional trauma often has its roots in childhood, this book will also be of interest and value to parents, teachers and anyone concerned with the care of children."

Infectious Diseases and Antimicrobial Stewardship in Critical Care Medicine (Hardcover, 4th edition): Cheston B. Cunha, Burke... Infectious Diseases and Antimicrobial Stewardship in Critical Care Medicine (Hardcover, 4th edition)
Cheston B. Cunha, Burke A. Cunha
R5,129 Discovery Miles 51 290 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Infectious Diseases and Antimicrobial Stewardship in Critical Care Medicine 4E has been fully updated and revised. The clinical diagnostic approach to common infectious disease problems in the CCU is the underlying theme in the book. Emphasized throughout is the importance of formulating an accurate early presumptive clinical syndromic diagnosis which is the basis for selecting optimal initial antimicrobial therapy in the CCU. Without an accurate presumptive clinical diagnosis, effective therapy is unlikely at best. Based on the most probable clinical diagnosis, optimal antibiotic empiric therapy, based on antimicrobial stewardship principles, minimizes resistance and antibiotic complications in the CCU. This new edition features chapters that explain the tenets of differential diagnostic reasoning, differential diagnostic characteristics of fever patterns in the CCU. The proper interpretation of rapid diagnostic tests, in the appropriate clinical context, is included. The diagnostic importance of cardinal clinical findings, particularly when combined, in the appropriate clinical context is emphasized and remains the basis for clinical problem solving in the CCU. Uniquely, critical diagnostic physical findings in the CCU, including color atlas of diagnostic eye findings, are included as important diagnostic determinants in the CCU. Written by infectious disease clinicians for CCU consultants, Infectious Diseases and Antimicrobial Stewardship in Critical Care Medicine 4E remains a useful evidence based and experience tempered key clinical resource for infectious disease problems in the CCU. Key Features Essentials of the tenets of clinical diagnostic reasoning is explained as it relates to formulating a rapid and accurate clinical syndromic diagnosis in the CCU The diagnostic significance of fever patterns and their relationship to the pulse rate in the proper clinical context is explained in depth as related to the CCU setting Formulating an accurate early clinical syndromic diagnosis is presented as essential since it is the basis of effective empiric antibiotic therapy in the CCU How to combine key non-specific laboratory and imaging findings to increase diagnostic specificity and diagnostic probability in the CCU is presented Clinical perspective on the proper interpretation of the clinical significance of rapid diagnostic test results in the CCU is included A clinical approach to apparent "antibiotic failure" in the CCU is presented either due to actual antibiotic failure or seeming but unrelated non-antibiotic failure Section focuses on the practical aspects of antimicrobial stewardship particularly as related to optimizing dosing effectiveness while minimizing resistance and adverse effects in the CCU

Martha Kent, Mary C Davis, John W Reich
R5,694 Discovery Miles 56 940 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

How are people and communities able to prevail despite challenge? What helps them bounce back from adversity and even grow in knowledge and understanding? And can this resilience be taught? During the past decade, exciting scientific advances have shed light on how resilience operates from neurons to neighborhoods. In The Resilience Handbook, experts in the science of resilience draw on human and animal research to describe the process of resilience and follow its course as it unfolds both within individuals and in social networks. Contributors also highlight the promise of new interventions that apply what we know about resilience processes to bolster positive health, and raise some of the pressing questions and issues for the field as it matures. This handbook is designed to be used by students as an invitation to a burgeoning field; by researchers, as a framework for advancing theories, hypotheses, and empirical tests of resilience functions; and by clinicians, as a comprehensive and up-to-the-minute integration of theory and practice.

Those interested in school psychology, trauma studies, and trauma counselling with children and adolescents will also benefit from the volume.

Physical Activity and Rehabilitation in Life-threatening Illness (Hardcover): Amy Litterini, Christopher Wilson Physical Activity and Rehabilitation in Life-threatening Illness (Hardcover)
Amy Litterini, Christopher Wilson
R4,068 Discovery Miles 40 680 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book is a comprehensive summary of the recommendations for best practice, and current evidence, for physical activity and rehabilitation of functional deficits in individuals with end-stage diseases. While advances in technology have afforded us the opportunity to live longer lives, it has also demanded an expansion of focus of medical interventions towards palliative care to enhance the quality of life. Exercise and healthcare professionals must strive to broaden their perspectives to provide for the unique needs of these individuals, and to successfully engage with them, to achieve the most positive outcomes throughout the entire continuum of care. Healthcare providers play a critical role in advocating for care to allow individuals to remain physically active for as long as possible, even in the face of declining health. Finally, due to the increasing and progressively emergent healthcare utilization required by these individuals, a significant cost burden is experienced by healthcare systems, patients, families, and payers. There is evidence of substantial protective effects of physical activity, prevention, safety, and rehabilitative procedures to reduce hospital readmissions, reduce length of stay, and assist in avoiding unwarranted or unnecessary diagnostic tests or procedures. Physical activity has been proven to have a substantial impact and protective effects on virtually all medical conditions. During curative management, but especially during transitional phases to palliative care, other strategies need enhanced consideration to complement the existing plan of care and help to improve patient's quality of life. Ideally, physical medicine would be at the forefront of allowing individuals to live their best life until the very end. Physical Activity and Rehabilitation in Life-threatening Illness is key reading for academics and policy makers in physical activity, international exercise, wellness and rehabilitation, and related disciplines, as well as research-focused clinicians in settings where patients with advanced illness are frequently encountered.
