In his popular Stanford University lectures, Shirzad Chamine reveals how to achieve one’s true potential for both professional success and personal fulfillment. His groundbreaking research exposes ten well-disguised mental Saboteurs. Nearly 95 percent of the executives in his Stanford lectures conclude that these Saboteurs cause “significant harm” to achieving their true potential. With Positive Intelligence, you can learn the secret to defeating these internal foes. Positive Intelligence (PQ) measures the percentage of time your mind is serving you as opposed to sabotaging you. While your IQ and EQ (emotional intelligence) contribute to your maximum potential, it is your PQ that determines how much of that potential you actually achieve. The great news is that you can improve your PQ significantly in as little as 21 days. With higher PQ, teams and professionals ranging from leaders to salespeople perform 30 to 35 percent better on average. Importantly, they also report being far happier and less stressed. The breakthrough tools and techniques in this book have been refined over years of coaching hundreds of CEOs and their executive teams. Shirzad tells many of their remarkable stories, showing how you too can take concrete steps to unleash the vast, untapped powers of your mind. Discover how to:

It started as advice to his own two children entering adulthood, it spread to his students at the University of the Free State and now tens of thousands of his followers of Twitter and Facebook wait for Jonathan Jansen's words of wisdom every day. Each day Jansen writes a "Letter to my children" - a nugget of advice on life, love and becoming a compassionate, thinking human being. Jansen has become South Africa's moral barometer in a time when leadership seems to be sorely lacking in many areas of our country which explains why this project has struck such a chord with South Africans young and old alike. Jansen talks to young people using new media but continues to give them good old fashioned advice about how to conduct their lives as strong and caring citizens who live life to the fullest.
For David Goggins, childhood was a nightmare - poverty, prejudice, and physical abuse colored his days and haunted his nights. But through self-discipline, mental toughness, and hard work, Goggins transformed himself from a depressed, overweight young man with no future into a U.S. Armed Forces icon and one of the world's top endurance athletes. The only man in history to complete elite training as a Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, and Air Force Tactical Air Controller, he went on to set records in numerous endurance events, inspiring Outside magazine to name him The Fittest (Real) Man in America. In Can't Hurt Me, he shares his astonishing life story and reveals that most of us tap into only 40% of our capabilities. Goggins calls this The 40% Rule, and his story illuminates a path that anyone can follow to push past pain, demolish fear, and reach their full potential.

With sharp wit and actionable wisdom, he challenges you to reimagine the future and embrace the reinvention necessary to remain indispensable. "I found myself asking the question, ‘Am I still relevant?’ What I discovered is that if you find yourself asking the question, the answer is no. Mostly because it’s the wrong question. The right question is, ‘What can I do today to stay relevant?’ You see, relevance is not a milestone anymore; it’s the path that we travel." – Richard Mulholland Be prepared to shift from comfort to curiosity.

In his page-turning and inspiring first book, legendary songwriter and recording artist Jason Derulo shares his 15 rules for finding success in any pursuit, and invites everyone—especially artists and creators—to start on their path to greatness. In 2009, an 18-year-old son of Haitian immigrants burst onto music charts with the instant number one song “Whatcha Say,” which opened with one of the catchiest lines in pop music history—the artist’s own name, sung out loud. (You’re probably singing it in your head right now! Sorry if it gets stuck there, but that’s kind of the point!) In the years since, Jason Derulo has cemented himself again and again, hit after hit, as one of the most consistent and versatile artists alive and a risk-taking force of nature. Sing Your Name Out Loud is the remarkable story of Derulo’s come up, told through the fifteen rules he lives by—like working hardest at what comes easiest, taking calculated risks, sticking to a routine, and respecting the numbers—which he credits with turning his many crazy, far-fetched goals over the years into reality. Waking at four a.m. to catch buses across Miami so he could attend performing arts schools on a scholarship, entering himself in local singing competitions at the mall on weekends, and penning hundreds of songs before he ever saw the inside of a recording studio—Derulo’s commitment to his dream, and dedication to seeing it come true, is the stuff of legend. But it was in 2020, after be coming one of the most followed creators on TikTok, that he realized his personal rules for achievement are applicable anywhere, for anyone, under any circumstance. “Now,” he writes, “it’s your turn.”
In our era of financial uncertainty and disruptive technological change, the music industry is in crisis. One career path that holds great promise, however, is independent music teaching. For a host of reasons, demand exists in every corner, providing one of the most stable, promising career options available to musicians regardless of instrument, genre, or background - at least, in the hands of a savvy music teacher. In this book, author David Cutler offers hands-on advice for creating a music career that is meaningful, artistically fulfilling, and financially self-supporting. The book's overriding goal is to ensure a steady income for its reader and to give the reader tools to use that income to provide financial independence. Cutler walks the reader through the process of setting up a profitable and sustainable career plan, and then through the practical aspects of getting out of debt, spending responsibly, investing, and saving for retirement. Cutler also sheds light on the logistics of running a teaching studio, providing helpful documentation and tips for everything from bookkeeping to time management. Lastly and most importantly, Cutler explores situations for increasing a teacher's impact. Rather than simply creating wealthy teachers, the overriding goal of their book is to cultivate leaders who add significant value to society through their teaching. A must-read for private music teachers of all levels, both beginning and those with established studios, as well as the music performance graduates who so often become private studio teachers, The Savvy Music Teacher provides practical advice in down-to-earth language that includes real-life experiences from successful teacher-entrepreneurs, a focus on large-scale income streams not usually covered in books for studio teachers, and sample documents (including contracts and marketing materials) on the book's comprehensive companion website.
What can be learned from black South Africans who achieved success before South Africa became a democracy in 1994? What are the challenges they faced, and how did they overcome them? And, today, how have South Africans benefited from the country’s democratic system of governance? These are the questions Phumlani M. Majozi explores and attempts to answer in Lessons from Past Heroes. He traces black people’s success and political activity back to the early 1900s; successful men and women who spearheaded the struggle against the segregationist, colonialist government and devoted their lives to advancing the interests of their communities. Phumlani explores the careers, challenges, and successes of people such as Pixley ka Isaka Seme, John Langalibalele Dube, Sol Plaatje and Josiah Tshangana Gumede. During the apartheid years, South Africa produced black men and women who overcame the odds to succeed in their fields of business, entertainment, science, and politics. They excelled in the face of an oppressive government system, and their stories should inspire every South African today. After exploring the history of South Africa, Phumlani delves into the present and the future; evaluating the challenges South Africans face and proposes solutions that can speed up their economic progress. He argues that much of South Africa’s history has portrayed the majority as victims of the minority, and that the inspirational stories of those people who overcame adversity are not being told widely enough. These stories must be told to inspire future generations. If black South Africans could succeed in the pre-1994 era, what can stop them today? The answer is nothing, Phumlani writes.
This volume is an attempt to educate, to provide a source of information, knowledge, and wisdom to the person who has spent so much time and energy on his or her schooling. The Council for Chemical Research (CCR) and the American Chemical Society (ACS) have both spent considerable effort over the past decades focusing on how to ensure that graduate education in the chemical sciences remains at the absolute highest caliber, and produces the best possible professionals. In spite of notable efforts from both organizations to prepare graduate students for the professional world, neither has specifically asked what a person needs to be successful once they have both the Ph.D. and the first job in hand. Put succinctly, there is much more to being successful in a career in chemistry than just the hard-earned Ph.D. degree. What You Need for the First Job, Besides the Ph.D. in Chemistry is based on a symposium of the same name held at the 246th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society, which took place in Indianapolis, Indiana in September, 2013. This book is the result of seeds that were planted during numerous informal conversations at the annual meetings of the CCR, as well as during such discussions at national and regional meetings of the ACS, and at the ACS employment clearing houses. The authors felt that the same intense focus a person needs to earn a Ph.D. might actually work against the attention to other details needed in order to be successful once he or she has obtained a position. Leaders want to ensure that new hires are working effectively toward tenure, are quickly becoming productive members of their corporate team, or are well integrated into their government laboratory research group. While it is easy to lump factors other than technical competence in one's job under the term "soft skills," this is an oversimplification. This book represents an attempt to have voices from all three pillars of the chemical enterprise - academia, industry, and government laboratories - heard in terms of relating what is important for their newly hired Ph.D.-holders. What You Need for the First Job, Besides the Ph.D. in Chemistry will be a valuable resource for first-time job seekers, as well as those with aspirations of a future career in the chemical sciences.

'My name Mbu is a short version of Mbuyiseli, which in isiXhosa means something like "the one who returns something."? I once asked my mom why she gave me this name. She said: "I never got anything from life; I hope to get something back from my children one day ... maybe from you."' In this moving and gripping tale of his life, Mbu recounts his childhood growing up in the shacks of some of the poorest townships in the Eastern and Western Cape; the battle to survive hunger, neglect and sleeping on the streets; the beloved older brother who took care of him as a toddler; the unwavering dream of education that kept him going; and the search for values and dignity in a world of alcohol, drugs, crime and few positive role models. Mbu's story is the story of countless other young men and women in South Africa, born into similar situations of hardship, growing up abandoned or neglected by parents themselves in need of parenting. What makes his story different is that it is a journey not of despair but transformation, lit by the kindness of friends and strangers, and Mbu's own determination not to stop hoping for a better life. Mbu Maloni lives in HOKISA Children's Home in Masiphumelele Township, Cape Town South Africa. He is currently in Grade 11, and plans to matriculate next year. This book is dedicated to a dear friend of his and serves to provide hope for the many 'street children' out there who, if they believe strongly enough in something positive, can achieve more than they are often led to believe. Lutz van Dijk is an internationally acclaimed writer, who, amongst other books, has published the bestseller "Stronger than the Storm," the novels "Romeo and Jabulile" and "Themba" (made into a movie in 2010) and "A History of Africa" (preface by Archbishop Tutu).

conversation to a successful conclusion. They are able to talk about
difficult topics without giving offence. They know how to make others
feel at ease and share what they think. They're brilliant facilitators
and decision-guiders. How do they do it?
It is almost impossible to keep up with the pace and direction in which business and technology are moving today. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE. AUTOMATION. BLOCKCHAIN. BIG DATA. INTERNET OF THINGS. THE FOURTH INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION. Who actually knows what any of these concepts mean for their business, much less how to integrate them? Things are moving at a faster pace than ever before and trying to keep up has become intimidating and overwhelming. It’s tempting to bury your head in the sand than try to make head or tail of it all. But none of the buzzwords actually matter! You don’t have to jump aboard every single change and adjustment in the market, or trade in your suit for a T-shirt, jeans and sneaker combo. If you have the right context, it’s a lot simpler to understand and use technological shifts as an opportunity to transform your business. Tech Adjacent is about understanding the principles of tech and its pace, hearing the footsteps of where it might be going, knowing how disruption and innovation work tangibly and, most importantly, leveraging it for your individual exponential success. Innovation is contextual, so while Uber, Airbnb and Facebook are grandiose Silicon Valley success stories, they have little relevance in our own market. This book shares stories and case studies of African businesses, exposing who is getting disrupted as we speak and why, as well as how new companies are leading the next wave of growth. Mushambi Mutuma’s experience and expertise in both business and as a tech entrepreneur give real-life context to rapid change, unlocking future opportunities and offering tools to predict where your audience and industry are heading. He sells no big ideas, but genuinely shares his unique perspectives and know-how to help whoever he can in the process. Tech Adjacent isn’t just another book on growing your business in 100 days, nor is it dry academic theory. It is the guidebook for not only surviving but excelling in a world of exponential growth. Whether you are a start-up entrepreneur or a corporate executive, this guide is a must for both present and future leaders. |
