Fault Diagnosis and Reconfiguration in Flight Control Systems (Hardcover, 2003 ed.): C. Hajiyev, F. Caliskan Fault Diagnosis and Reconfiguration in Flight Control Systems (Hardcover, 2003 ed.)
C. Hajiyev, F. Caliskan
R5,791 Discovery Miles 57 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The problem of fault diagnosis and reconfigurable control is a new and actually developing field of science and engineering. The subject becomes more interesting since there is an increasing demand for the navigation and control systems of aerospace vehicles, automated actuators etc. to be more safe and reliable. Nowadays, the problems of fault detection and isolation and reconfigurable control attract the attention the scientists in the world. The subject is emphasized in the recent international congresses such as IF AC World Congresses (San Francisco-1996, Beijing-1999, and Barcelona-2002) and lMEKO World Congresses (Tampere-1997, Osaka-1999, Vienna-2000), and also in the international conferences on fault diagnosis such as SAFEPROCESS Conferences (Hull-1997, Budapest-2000). The presented methods in the book are based on linear and nonlinear dynamic mathematical models of the systems. Technical objects and systems stated by these models are very large, and include various control systems, actuators, sensors, computer systems, communication systems, and mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical and electronic devices. The analytical fault diagnosis techniques of these objects have been developed for several decades. Many of those techniques are based on the use of the results of modem control theory. This is natural, because it is known that fault diagnosis process in control systems is considered as a part of general control process. xxii In organization of fault diagnosis of control systems, the use of the concepts and methods of modem control theory including concepts of state space, modeling, controllability, observability, estimation, identification, and filtering is very efficient.

Aviation Design and Innovation (Hardcover): Lucy Budd, Stephen Ison Aviation Design and Innovation (Hardcover)
Lucy Budd, Stephen Ison
R6,906 Discovery Miles 69 060 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

In order to facilitate the safe, efficient and cost effective exchange of passengers and cargo between ground and sky airports require the provision of adequate runways, aircraft manoeuvring areas, cargo sheds and passenger processing facilities. Airports are capital intensive facilities and planning errors which result in the over or under-provision of capacity are both costly and problematic to rectify and so understanding the optimal configuration of passenger terminals is paramount. Of course, the design of passenger terminal buildings is influenced not only by levels of demand, the commercial requirements of airlines and tenant companies, the availability of investment funds and political influence but also by the aircraft that will be using the facility both now and in the future. Indeed, the introduction of the first generation of passenger jets in the 1950s and higher-capacity wide-bodied aircraft in the late 1960s required not only the expansion of gate areas and passenger processing facilities but also the introduction of new technologies such as the travelator, the baggage reclaim carousel and the airbridge. The introduction of the A380 'Super Jumbo' into revenue passenger service in 2007 similarly demanded a reconfiguration of the airports it serves and practitioners need to be cognisant of the options for accommodating a new generation of large aircraft. While large aircraft generally require a lengthy turn around period between flights and the extensive provision of expensive fixed ground support infrastructure, low cost carriers pursue a business model based on very short turnarounds and minimal use of airport infrastructure assets such as airbridges. One of the main challenges facing airport operators is how to accommodate the diverse and dynamic requirements of different operators and these issues are addressed in this Volume. Traditionally, aircraft were made and manufactured by small companies within one country but as costs have increased and technology has become more sophisticated, a relatively small number of manufacturers, which are supported by international supply chains, have come to dominate the commercial aircraft market. Originally, all aviation jet fuels were derived from crude oil. However, concerns about future oil supply and energy security combined with the need to improve aviation's environmental performance and sustainability has driven the development of alternative fuel sources. However, the development and adoption of alternative aviation fuels is not straightforward and the Volume examines the opportunities and challenges of widespread biofuel adoption in terms of production capacity, emissions reductions, cost and commercial viability. The final essays in this Volume address business model innovation in the airline and airport sector and include considerations of the future evolution of low cost carriers, the potential for airline-airport alliances and the development of multi-airport multinational operating companies.

Practical Airport Operations, Safety, and Emergency Management - Protocols for Today and the Future (Paperback): Jeffrey Price,... Practical Airport Operations, Safety, and Emergency Management - Protocols for Today and the Future (Paperback)
Jeffrey Price, Jeffrey Forrest
R2,249 Discovery Miles 22 490 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Practical Airport Operations, Safety, and Emergency Management: Protocols for Today and the Future focuses on the airport itself, not the aircraft, manufacturers, designers, or even the pilots. The book explores the safety of what's been called 'the most expensive piece of pavement in any city'- the facility that operates, maintains, and ensures the safety of millions of air passengers every year. The book is organized into three helpful sections, each focusing on one of the sectors described in the title. Section One: Airport Safety, explores the airport environment, then delves into safety management systems. Section Two: Airport Operations, continues the conversation on safety management systems before outlining airside and landside operations in depth, while Section Three: Airport Emergency Management, is a careful, detailed exploration of the topic, ending with a chapter on the operational challenges airport operations managers can expect to face in the future. Written by trusted experts in the field, users will find this book to be a vital resource that provides airport operations managers and students with the information, protocols, and strategies they need to meet the unique challenges associated with running an airport.

Insights and Research on the Study of Gender and Intersectionality in International Airline Cultures (Hardcover): Albert J Mills Insights and Research on the Study of Gender and Intersectionality in International Airline Cultures (Hardcover)
Albert J Mills
R3,136 Discovery Miles 31 360 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

For the first time in a single edited collection, this important body of feminist work traces the relationship between the formation of organizational culture and the development, maintenance and changing character of workplace discrimination. Based on three decades of archival research by Albert J. Mills and his colleagues, the book brings together a series of articles, chapters and hitherto unpublished papers that document the founding and growth of our major international airlines - Air Canada, British Airways, Pan American Airways, and Qantas Airways - to understand the comparative influence of organizational cultures not only on internal organizational processes but also social understandings of gendered practices. The insights generated in this body of work bring to light the complexity of organizational rules, symbolism, language, imagery, storytelling, and `history' as they impact on the practices and sensemaking of those involved in producing discrimination at work. Feminists and other diversity researchers will find this collection useful not only for insights on the processes of discrimination but also on the various reflections on methodological approaches that are peppered throughout. To that end, qualitative researchers and management and organizational historians with an interest in methodology will also find the book valuable in its reflections on the range of approaches discussed throughout.

Commercial aviation took shape in Hong Kong as the city developed into a powerful economy. Rather than accepting air travel as an inevitability in the era of global mobility, John Wong argues that Hong Kong's development into a regional and global airline hub was not preordained. By underscoring the shifting process through which this hub emerged, Hong Kong Takes Flight aims to describe globalization and global networks in the making. Viewing the globalization of the city through the prism of its airline industry, Wong examines how policymakers and businesses asserted themselves against international partners and competitors in a bid to accrue socioeconomic benefits, negotiated their interests in Hong Kong's economic success, and articulated their expressions of modernity.

Aviation Law and Drones - Unmanned Aircraft and the Future of Aviation (Paperback): David Hodgkinson, Rebecca Johnston Aviation Law and Drones - Unmanned Aircraft and the Future of Aviation (Paperback)
David Hodgkinson, Rebecca Johnston
R1,126 Discovery Miles 11 260 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The aviation industry is being transformed by the use of unmanned aerial vehicles, or drones - commercially, militarily, scientifically and recreationally. National regulations have generally failed to keep pace with the expansion of the fast-growing drone industry. Aviation Law and Drones: Unmanned Aircraft and the Future of Aviation traces the development of aviation laws and regulations, explains how aviation is regulated at an international and national level, considers the interrelationship between rapidly advancing technology and legislative attempts to keep pace, and reviews existing domestic and international drone laws and issues (including safety, security, privacy and airspace issues). Against this background, the book uniquely proposes a rationale for, and key provisions of, guiding principles for the regulation of drones internationally - provisions of which could also be implemented domestically. Finally, the book examines the changing shape of our increasingly busy skies - technology beyond drones and the regulation of that technology. The world is on the edge of major disruption in aviation - drones are just the beginning. Given the almost universal interest in drones, this book will be of interest to readers worldwide, from the academic sector and beyond.

The Routledge Handbook of Transport Economics (Paperback): Jonathan Cowie, Stephen Ison The Routledge Handbook of Transport Economics (Paperback)
Jonathan Cowie, Stephen Ison
R1,527 Discovery Miles 15 270 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The Routledge Handbook of Transport Economics offers the first state of the art overview of the discipline of transport economics as it stands today, reflective of key research and policy. Transport is an important area of study and one which is problem rich, stimulating a great deal of debate in areas which impact on everyday lives. Much of this focuses on the practicalities of the modern-day phenomenon of mass movement and all of the issues which surround it. The discipline of economics is central to this debate, and consequently the study and application of transport economics has a chief role to play in seeking to address subjects relating to major transport issues. It can be argued that at the very heart of any transport issue or problem lies the underlying economics of the situation - understand that and you alleviate the problem. Featuring contributions from world-leading scholars and practitioners from across the globe, all of the chapters within this book are written from a practical perspective; theory is applied and developed using real-world examples. The book examines concepts, issues, ideas and practicalities of transport provision in five key topic areas: public transport public transport reform economic development and transport modelling transport and the environment freight transport. A real strength of the book is in linking theory to practice, and hence the 'economics' that are examined in this text are not the economics of the abstract, but rather the economics of everyday living. Practical and insightful, this volume is an essential reference for any student or researcher working in all areas of transport provision, ranging from planning, appraisal, regulation and freight; and for all practitioners looking to develop their professional knowledge and who are seeking professional accreditation.

Nawal K. Taneja
R1,692 Discovery Miles 16 920 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book provides a flight plan for riding the impending connectivity transformation curve. It takes the perspective of actionability, highlighting initiatives that executives in airlines and related businesses can use from the insights of multi-industry executives. The emphasis is on execution, not on the concepts themselves. There is a cluster of at least four distinct megatrends that may converge to form disruptive conditions: (1) elevated expectations of existing and new customer segmentations, those who expect available and accessible air mass transportation systems, and those who expect connected services and seamless travel on different modes of transportation; (2) new emerging technology, incorporated in the air and ground vehicles, that will create new opportunities for existing and new service providers to offer new value propositions; (3) platforms developed around the ecosystem of customers; and (4) the impact on travel that the fast-changing demographic and economic characteristics of two major countries: India and China. These megatrends could lead existing or new businesses to create value propositions specifically dedicated to the new segments once each reaches a critical mass. Drawing on the author's own experience in the airline industry and related businesses, this book discusses the "how", relating to reimagining the business, re-entrepreneuring the organization, innovating through partnerships, reengaging with customers and employees, and rebranding the business in response to these trends. This book is recommended reading for all senior-level practitioners of airlines and related businesses worldwide.

Greatest Air Aces of All Time (Hardcover): Air Marshal Anil Chopra Greatest Air Aces of All Time (Hardcover)
Air Marshal Anil Chopra
R2,240 Discovery Miles 22 400 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

A flying Ace, fighter Ace or Air Ace is a military aviator credited with shooting down five or more enemy aircraft during aerial combat. The concept of the "Ace" emerged in 1915 during World War I, at the same time as aerial dogfighting, and was a term often also used to create heroes for domestic audiences, in what were otherwise wars of attrition. The individual combat actions of Aces were widely reported and disseminated as a chivalrous knight reminiscent to ancient era. For a brief early period, the exceptionally skilled pilot could shape the battle in the skies, and approximately five percent of combat pilots account for the majority of air-to-air victories. French newspapers were the first to describe Adolphe Pegoud as an Ace in World War I, and later Manfred von Richthofen, known as the "Red Baron. There were a large number of Air Aces in World War II, and later in the Korean, Vietnam, Iraq-Iran, and Arab-Israeli wars. This book covers 25 of the greatest Air Aces across wars, nationalities and countries.
