This is a textbook for students and practitioners involved in the management of patients with ocular allergy. Allergic disorders of the ocular surface affect more than 20% of the general population and they are ocular diseases in which IgE- and/or T-lymphocyte mediated mechanisms are involved. They can have a significant impact on an individual's quality of life. This book addresses the important aspects of allergic disorders of the ocular surface with particular emphasis on the pathomechanism and pharmacotherapy of the different types of ocular allergy. The cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in the pathomechanism of allergic eye diseases, as well as the lymphocytic activation process are also discussed. The book will provide the reader with considerable insight into the pharmacotherapy of allergic eye diseases with emphasis on the clinical pharmacology of anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory pharmaceutical agents.
In this book, the authors present topical research in the study of the characteristics, types and treatment of bacterial infections. Topics discussed include chronic pseudomonas aeruginosa infection in cystic fibrosis; bacteriophage therapy; antimicrobial applications of phages; human cutaneous tuberculosis and skin dendritic cells; the pathophysiology and prevention of bacterial endocarditis and current antibiotics for ocular infections.
The fourth edition of this important book, which includes additional color illustrations, has been extensively revised, updated, and expanded to reflect the most recent developments. These include advances in patch testing methodology, in particular the new chambers that are appearing on the market, revision of the baseline series of patch tests to reflect the latest evidence-based work, and additional testing procedures. Other additions include sections on key allergens and concentrations, with the result is a superb guide to the current management of positive and negative patch test and prick test reactions that will be invaluable for all practicing dermatologists, from the beginner to the well-trained expert. The fourth edition continues the tradition of partnering with the ICDRG (International Contact Dermatitis Research Group). The ICDRG was formed in 1966 to promote the understanding of contact dermatitis. It has had major roles in the standardization of patch testing and the facilitation of regular scientific meetings, for over forty years and thirty five years respectively. It has also been involved in the authorship of a number of publications on contact dermatitis. Both Drs. Maibach and Lachapelle are members and the ICDRG is now comprised of representatives from all over the world, and currently includes members from Belgium, Sweden, Denmark, the United Kingdom, USA, Germany, Singapore, Korea, India, Japan, Canada, Uruguay and Australia. From the reviews of the previous editions:"The aim is to balance brevity and clarity with sufficient details for beginners in the field of diagnostic patch and prick testing. ... the book also will be of use to dermatology residents or anyone wishing to gain better knowledge of contact dermatitis. ... There are many high-quality photographs and useful algorithms and tables. ... It is clearly and concisely written and will serve as an indispensable guide for any dermatologist interested in contact dermatitis." (Renata H. Mullen, Doody's Review Service, August, 2009)

Never has so much progress been reported in immunology as at this congress. The full impact of new technologies, developed since the late 1970s, has come to fruition: gene isolation, mutation, transfection and expression, protein structure and peptide synthesis, cell cloning, hybridization and monoclonal antibodies, CD serology, SCID and transgenic mice, modern immunomudulation and vaccines. An overwhelming mass of data has accumulated over the last years. The reports are up-to-date and outstanding, to a degree no journal will ever achieve, and the results are presented in a concise and lucid way. This report will serve as a guideline for generations of immunologists to come. Hundreds of new alleys have been opened, an abundance of research tools and goals are pointed to. This volume is a treasure trove of explorations ahead of our time - it is exciting reading. This progress report presents outstanding contributions, worth many prizes - a feature which is unusual for proceedings volumes. Immunology is exhibited at its best: an exciting research area and a rewarding subject to study for the benefit of mankind - today more than ever! |
