Automated Drug Delivery in Anesthesia provides a full review of available tools and methods on the drug delivery of anesthesia, bridging the gap between academic development, research and clinical practice. The book takes an interdisciplinary approach, pulling information about tools developed in other disciplines such as mathematics, physics, biology and system engineering and applying them to drug delivery. The book's authors discuss the missing element of complete regulatory loop of anesthesia: the sensor and model for pain pathway assessment. This is the only book which focuses specifically on the delivery of anesthesia.
The "Handbook of Clinical Anesthesia, Seventh Edition," closely
parallels "Clinical Anesthesia, Seventh Edition," and presents the
essential information found in the larger text in a concise,
portable format. Extensive changes made to the parent textbook are
reflected in the "Handbook"; chapters have been completely updated
and a new chapter covering anesthesia for laparoscopic and robotic
surgeries has been added.
Pain medicine has struggled to find effective treatments for chronic pain. Opioids, which were considered the standard of care, have now demonstrated to have significant adverse long-term consequences. This book provides the reader with pain treatment strategies that have been effectively employed over the years as well as the newest trends and treatment in pain care. Covers cannabinoids in pain care, novel therapeutics in pain medicine, and integrative care in pain management. Discusses relevant basic science, psychological aspects of pain care, opioids and practice guidelines, geriatric pain management, and future research in the field. Consolidates today's available information and guidance into a single, convenient resource.
The World Health Organization published Cancer Pain Relief in 1990,
advocating simplicity in the choice of analgesic and of route of
administration. Since that time an increasing number of opioids for
moderate to severe pain in an increasing number of formulations
have become available, making professionals' choices about cancer
pain management more complex.
Pediatric anesthesiologists will encounter numerous challenges when caring for children, as their work involves more than simply adjusting drug dosages and equipment for smaller patients. In response, this practical book provides clinical guidance in an easily accessible and digestible question-answer format. Case Studies in Pediatric Anesthesia reviews the entire breadth of pediatric anesthesia and pain management, taking a case-based approach. Each chapter commences with a clinical case or scenario, guiding the reader through a tailored discussion. The chapters review the pathophysiology, anesthetic techniques, and surgical and perioperative considerations. High quality tables and figures feature throughout to help solidify key concepts. The chapters are prepared to be read in isolation and for reference when appropriate. Case Studies in Pediatric Anesthesia is aimed at anesthesiologists of all levels, from the trainee on their first pediatric rotation, to the pediatric fellow preparing for boards examination to the seasoned clinician.
Pain in later life is both quite common and disabling, and it
differs significantly in terms of its aetiology, diagnosis and
treatment from pain in the general adult population. Older people
often have complicated co-morbidities, have a high prevalence of
mental health problems (e.g. anxiety, cognitive impairment, and
depression) and respond to treatment in different ways compared to
younger people. Their specific needs are rarely discussed
specifically in more general texts.
Take control of your life, take control of your pain Chronic pain can be extremely debilitating; however, it does not need to dominate your life. This self-help book is based on highly effective self-help methods developed by specialists and used in community and hospital pain management programmes. Your experience of pain can be greatly reduced by pacing daily activities, reducing stress, learning relaxation techniques and effective ways to cope with depression, anxiety, worry, anger and frustration. This easy-to-follow book sets out: - Why pain can persist when there's no injury or disease present - How to become fitter and pace your activities - Practical ways to improve sleep and relaxation - Tips for returning to work, study and gaining a life you value Overcoming self-help guides use clinically proven techniques to treat long-standing and disabling conditions, both psychological and physical. This book is recommended by the national Reading Well scheme for England delivered by The Reading Agency and the Society of Chief Librarians with funding from Arts Council England and Wellcome.
Internationally-recognized pain expert Don Goldenberg helps readers better understand the intricacies of chronic pain through the lens of personal stories, including his own. One out of three Americans lives with chronic pain. Pain is the number one reason we seek medical care and accounts for 40% of doctor visits. Chronic pain is the most common cause of work loss world-wide. The yearly cost of chronic pain in the United States is between $560-$630 billion, higher than that of heart disease, diabetes and cancer combined. Despite this, physicians and the public are woefully ill-informed about chronic pain. The litany of self-help books available to the public are largely misleading, quick-fix, junk-science. Although there is a major push to better inform primary health-care providers on chronic pain, they have been provided no authoritative treatment of the subject. The Pain Epidemic provides the latest medical information and pathways to better understanding and treatment of chronic pain. Dr. Don Goldenberg, an internationally known expert on pain, here discusses such hot topics as the opioid epidemic, mind/body interactions in chronic pain, and gender bias, as well as the role of cannabis and new potential pain treatment. Interested readers will come away with not only a better understanding of the pain epidemic but of pain itself.
Pain management is a growing area of interest for many health care professionals. It is a truly integrated approach involving a team comprising medical practitioners, clinical psychologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and nurse practitioners. Different professions may work together but the approach may also be adopted by individual practitioners. Pain Management: An Interdisciplinary Approach deals specifically with the management of potentially chronic l pain, how to assess patients with pain, the factors involved in the development of chronic pain and the setting up and running of a pain management programme. The main focus is on musculoskeletal and fibromyalgic type pain. Cancer pain is not addressed. The authors address not only what is recommended in the management of pain but also whether and why it is done, thereby covering not only the content of interdisciplinary pain management but also the processes involved. An increasing number of courses on pain management are now being set up around the world. This has created an increasing and continuous demand for a textbook which could be used by those attending these courses and which would provide others who have to deal with the problems as part of their day to day practice with guide to best practice. The book provides an essential reference for all health professionals involved in all aspects of pain management. Provides extensive background material and covers broad issues which other books lack Focuses on not only what is done with the management of pain but whether and why it is done Includes the nuts and bolts of setting up and running a pain management programme Addresses the application of pain management programmes in a wide range of fields Has a multidisciplinary approach and therefore appeals to a multidisciplinary market Two new co-authors: Kay Greasley and Bengt Sjolund. Major restructuring of chapters and rewriting of content with new authors for many of them. Greatly increased discussion of biopsychosocial management in individual clinical practice. Addresses the needs of the individual practitioners as well as those working in specialised pain management units. Includes more on primary care and secondary pain prevention. Expanded discussion of the clinical-occupational interfaces. Particular emphasis on the identification and targeting of modifiable risk factors for chronic pain and prolonged disability. The following topics stregthened throughout: communication, the nature of groups, medication and iatrogenics. Potential of an evidence-based biopsychosocial approach to pain management highlighted.
The development of pain as a common experience and its treatment is very important, not only where it is caused by injury or inflammation, but also in chronic states where the nerves themselves are damaged. Even though we already know from physiological studies that special pain receptors or nociceptors are responsible for conducting pain sensations to the brain, the phenomenon of pain remains a medical and social problem. Pain relief or analgesia can be achieved using several different approaches and strategies. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are the most widely used analgesics. They have analgesic, antipyretic, and, at higher doses, anti-inflammatory actions. However, a few recent studies have demonstrated that in the case of their prolonged use, these non-opioid drugs elicit the opioid-like effect of tolerance, which alongside drug withdrawal syndrome may entail serious adverse effects. This book provides up-to-date review information and experimental findings concerning antinociceptive tolerance to NSAIDs. The first three chapters after the introduction are devoted to literature reviews on brain limbic areas, opioid and cannabinoid systems, and non-opioid antinociceptive tolerance. Chapters Five, Six and Seven describe research data on antinociceptive tolerance to NSAIDs and opioid and cannabinoid mechanisms of attenuation of nociceptive hyperalgesia in the cingulate cortex, insular cortex, and central amygdala. Chapters Eight, Nine and Ten include discussion, summary and conclusions, as well as a detailed description of experimental materials and methods.
This prestigious text offers the most up-to-date advice on the assessment and treatment of pain. Derived from the highly acclaimed journals Best Practice & Research Clinical Rheumatology and Best Practice & Research Clinical Anaesthesiology, this fully updated volume discusses the basic principles of pain, its diagnosis, the recognition of 'red' flags indicating a greater risk of serious causes and 'yellow' flags indicating a greater risk of developing more chronic pain, and the evidence-based management of a variety of conditions. Illustrated throughout, the book draws upon the expertise of some of the World's leading experts in the field, providing a publication that gives a truly international perspective to the management of pain. Full reference to the latest clinical research New chapters on limb pain and Science and psychology of pain Cochrane Reviews, when relevant boxed and bulleted Research Agenda and Practice Points Reference to national and international guidelines
Designed for primary care clinicians, this book is about patients who suffer with long term pain. Written in a distinct, friendly style, it analyses ideas about pain from the simple to the complex and provides up-to-date and relevant information written by doctors whose practice is either wholly or substantially related to people with pain. It provides examples of everyday patients to provide clinicians with the confidence to prescribe and treat patients with more difficult pain. In an attempt to 'demystify' some areas of pain medicine it also includes details of the science behind common conditions and their remedies in order to emphasise the psychological and social impacts of pain.
This book highlights remarkable new endoscopic, laparoscopic, and thoracoscopic approaches to the removal of surgical lesions for different pathologic conditions under general endotracheal anesthesia in infants and children. It details how newer techniques in airway management, monitoring, regional nerve blocks for these innovative minimally invasive approaches have resulted in a decrease in intraoperative and postoperative morbidity and early recovery process after pediatric anesthesia. This unique book contains features that provide the audience with several clinical scenarios where exceptional surgical outcomes are achieved with optimum pre-op preparation via collaborative team efforts. To date there is no other textbook emphasizing the anesthetic and surgical management during the most innovative advances in endoscopic surgery in children. Per oral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) for the definitive treatment of achalasia in children is probably the most advanced endoscopic surgery done successfully in children. POEM is the best example of endoscopic surgery performed via natural orifices known as the Natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES). Another new laparoscopic surgical intervention -Median Arcuate Ligament surgical release for Median Arcuate Ligament Syndrome (MALS) for patients with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) is described with established perioperative protocols emphasizing the need for early admission, intravenous hydration, and premedication. Novel approaches in the anesthetic management in children with short bowel syndrome for bowel lengthening techniques like the serial transverse enteroplasty (STEP) and in teenagers for laparoscopic bariatric surgery with adjustable gastric banding (AGB) and vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG) for morbid obesity are new areas that would enlighten the readers. Anesthetic Management in Pediatric General Surgery is an invaluable resource for pediatric anesthesiologists, surgeons, and their trainees specializing in the care of pediatric patients.
Though the topics of 'pain' and 'headache' are obviously linked, these two research fields have in recent years developed at their own pace, often with scant attention paid to the other. By forging closer links between these fields, it should be possible to develop a deeper understanding of both the pain mechanisms associated with headache and a deeper understanding of pain itself. This book brings together researchers and clinicians from the forefront of these two disciplines to explore how the basic pain mechanisms relate to migraine and other forms of headache. With cutting-edge research from the frontiers of headache and pain research, the book will be essential for clinicians treating headache sufferers, providing answers to many of the commonly asked questions about the mechanisms of their headache. It will also be of interest to those pain researchers dealing with mechanisms related to headache and migraine.

This is the fourth volume in a new international, multi-contributed series aimed at providing practical, clinical guidance on how to deal with difficult symptoms related to specific cancer sites. In this volume the Editors bring together first-rate palliative care with oncological treatment for patients with advanced breast cancer. The book is presented in a user-friendly handbook format, with use of tables and algorithms to ensure that it is portable, accessible and can be read and referred to on, or before going to, the ward, or before a domiciliary visit. Specialists in palliative care and oncology settings, working in the acute sector and in hospices, will find the book invaluable. It will also appeal to consultants as well as specialist registrars, clinical nurse specialists and nurse practitioners in palliative care and oncology. The Palliative Care Consultations series is primarily aimed at those individuals working in an acute hospital cancer centre and/or tertiary referral centre. Books are designed to give the busy clinician advice on clinical problems, both those rarely encountered and those that are very common, but difficult. The volumes are site specific and each volume encompasses a review of the current oncological or haemato-oncological management of advanced disease with symptom control advice. These volumes will give clinicians excellent advice on symptom control in the context of palliative care. The books will also be of use and interest to other professions working in acute hospitals.
The last decade has seen major advances in the neurobiology of
pain, primarily resulting from a deeper understanding of the way in
which pain signals are coded and processed in the nervous system.
This volume in the Molecular and Cellular Neurobiology is the first
book for many years to present an integrated overview of the
current state of research into the neurobiology of chronic and
acute pain.

A comprehensive review of the current state of thinking and research in relation to the management of the psychological aspects of pain. Written in a style and at a level which is relevant and accessible to the practising clinician and also to students it provides a wealth of clinically valuable information on how the psychology of pain may be utilized in clinical practice. Addresses the common clinical problems relating to the psychological aspects of pain management and gives practical guidance based on the latest research as to how those problems should be dealt with. A model is provided to help readers grasp the main points as well as to help organize possible applications. The second part of the book is exclusively dedicated to incorporating the psychology of pain into clinical practice. Rather than starting with rehabilitating those with chronic pain, this book provides clinical application from the beginning. Thus, the book examines why patients seek care in the first place as well as how to communicate with patients. Practical routines are provided for dealing with patients from the first visit and on wards.; Special emphasis is placed on utilizing the information for early

Some important constraints of anesthesia must be taken into consideration when the pharmacological properties of modern anesthetics are discussed. The most imp- tant of these could be that the target effect be achieved preferably within seconds, at most within a few minutes. Similarly, offset of drug action should be achieved within minutes rather hours. The target effects, such as unconsciousness, are pot- tially life-threatening, as are the side effects of modern anesthetics, such as respi- tory and cardiovascular depression. Finally, the patient's purposeful responses are not available to guide drug dosage, because, either the patient is unconscious, or more problematically, the patient is aware but unable to communicate pain because of neuromuscular blockade. These constraints were already recognised 35 years ago, when in 1972 Volume XXX entitled "Modern Inhalation Anesthetics" appeared in this Handbook Series. The present volume is meant as a follow up and extension of that volume. At the beginning of the 1970's anesthesia was commonly delivered by inhalation, with only very few exceptions. The clinical understanding of that time considered anesthesia as a unique state achieved by any of the inhalation anesthetics, in- pendent of their specific molecular structure. "The very mechanism of anesthetic action at the biophase" was discussed within the theoretical framework of the "u- tary theory of narcosis".
