As the aquaculture industry has expanded throughout the world, it has embraced the experiences of many fields of study to meet increasing technologica1 challenges. The complexities of modern hatchery methodology, more intensive growout systems, and the application of diverse biological and physical sciences to aquatic animal husbandry have reached beyona the ability of most aquaculturists to enjoy an in-depth knowledge of all phases of the aquaculture process. More importantly, in oraer for tIie culturist to have at hand the information necessary to make basic decisions, it requires an extensive library of textbooks and scientific literature. The Aquaculture Desk Reference serves as a concise compila tion of tables, graphs, conversions, formulas and design specifica tions useful to the aquaculture industry. It also provides examples, in a straightforward manner, of how information in tabulature can be used to derive values for specific system design and process strategies. Tables and graphs in this volume also provide back ground documentation and authority for further reference. The Aquaculture Desk Reference is a convenient source book that will alleviate the need for an extensive personal library to access basic information useful for practicing aquaculturists. Many thanks to Mrs. Ruth Aldrich for her assistance in the preparation of this book. My family, friends and associates also deserve my special appreciation for their encouragement and sup port.
This volume deals with the growth of aquaculture farming, largely
driven by export demand, in the Sunderbans and its impact on the
ecosystem, biodiversity, land use change, and human well-being. It
raisse questions on: social cost of erosion of biodiversity, land
conversion, sustainability of aquaculture, and multi-stakeholder
aimed policy responses. A detailed discussion on compliance costs,
economic benefits as against social costs of environmental
pollution and degradation enriches the debate.
These guidelines have been developed to assist users in the construction and application of ecosystem models for informing an ecosystem approach to fisheries. It addresses all steps of the modelling process, encompassing scoping and specifying the model, implementation, evaluation and advice on how to present and use the outputs.
Fishers rely on an in-depth knowledge of the natural milieu for their livelihood. This volume focuses on how and where fishers' knowledge indigenous and artisanal, as well as large and small-scale commercial is being put to work in collaboration with scientists, government managers and non-governmental organizations. Case studies from around the globe show clearly that it is time to move beyond debates about the utility of fishers' knowledge to focus on establishing frameworks that best allow fishers and their knowledge to become effective and appropriate counterparts in fisheries science and management. This volume represents an important contribution towards achieving the goal of establishing international responsibility for the ethical collection, preservation, dissemination and application of fishers knowledge.
Seafoods covers selected but vital topics of fish processing with an emphasis on quality, technology and nutraceutical applications in an up-to-date survey. The aspects of seafood quality covered range from the impact of slaughter procedures, through protein functionality, texture, flavour, histamine toxicity to the practical evaluation of quality and measurement. Technological aspects concentrate on automation in processing, waste-water treatment and reuse of scraps. Marine nutraceuticals/functional foods are discussed in detail. This book is highly recommended for scientists and technologists in the seafood industries, plus fish processing professionals, quality managers, and nutritonists..
