Featuring four films by the young Irish filmmaker Kevin Gaffney,
Unseen By My Open Eyes is the first publication on the artist's
work, exploring the psychological landscapes that the artist
devises to explore the construction, projection and manipulation of
identity. Within the book, Gaffney's films are presented through a
series of richly illustrated sections, providing an excellent
insight into the artist's methodologies. The book explores subjects
ranging from: daily life in Iran; selfhood and military
conscription in Taiwan; geographic, political and emotional
separations in South Korea, with characters imagining what the moon
looks like from North Korea; and food consumption in a
self-sustaining militarised Ireland of the near future where
climate change has benefited agricultural production. The book
features English scripts of the five films, with an annex compiling
the scripts in Korean, Chinese, Persian and Gaeilge (Irish
Gaelic).Gaffney's works are contextualised through an accompanying
essay by Irish critic Caoimhin Mac Giolla Leith.Gaffney was the
first Irish recipient of a Sky Academy Arts Scholarship in 2015,
and was an UNESCO-Aschberg laureate artist in residence at the
National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art's Changdong
Residency in South Korea in 2014. His work features in the Irish
Museum of Modern Art's collection, and solo exhibitions have been
held at the Linenhall Arts Centre (Ireland), Millennium Court Arts
Centre (Northern Ireland) and CAI02 Contemporary Art Institute
(Japan).

For generations, Black artists from the American South have forged
a unique art tradition. Working in near isolation from established
practices, they have created masterpieces in clay, driftwood,
roots, soil, recycled and cast-off objects that articulate
America's painful past - the inhuman practice of enslavement, the
cruel segregationist policies of the Jim Crow era, and
institutionalised racism. Their works date from the early 20th
century to today and respond to issues ranging from economic
inequality, oppression and social marginalisation, to sexuality,
the influence of place and ancestral memory. Among the sculptures,
paintings, reliefs and drawings included here are works by Thornton
Dial, Lonnie Holley, Ronald Lockett, Hawkins Bolden, Bessie Harvey,
Charles Williams, Mary T. Smith, Purvis Young, Mose Tolliver,
Nellie Mae Rowe, Mary Lee Bendolph, Marlene Bennett Jones, Martha
Jane Pettway, Loretta Pettway, and Henry and Georgia Speller. Also
featured are the celebrated quiltmakers of Gee's Bend, Alabama, and
the neighbouring communities of Rehoboth and Alberta.

Packed with information and tips on materials and techniques, the
book is a visual delight as well as a practical. Best-selling
authors Tracy Boomer and Deborah Morbin said in their first book
that they would decoupage the sky if they could reach it. Since
then it's become even easier to decorate just about anything you
can imagine with decoupage by making use of serviettes and the
variety of special mediums for applying them to different base
materials. With a text once again written with the infectious
enthusiasm and humour that contributed to record sales on both
their earlier books Tracy and Debbie guide you through the basics,
share the results of their extensive experimenting with you by way
of useful hints and tips, and tell you how to complete more than 30
projects using serviette decoupage. Decoupage with serviettes
brings you as close to instant results as can be with some of the
projects in this book taking no more than a couple of hours to
complete. Packed with information and tips on materials and
techniques, the book is a visual delight as well as a practical
craft book with a wealth of innovative and original ideas. Projects
have been carefully selected to cover a variety of base materials;
each project is beautifully illustrated with specially commissioned
photographs; steps are explained with easy to follow instructions;
suggested alternatives help you create unique items; projects
include paper tole and elevated images.
At the start of the March 2020 lockdown, Ian Beck would walk his
greyhound Gracie through the early morning streets of Isleworth in
west London, revelling in the light and the silence that the
restrictions had brought. The familiar became charged with new
meaning, inspiring Ian to paint the scenes around him for their own
sake, something that he hadn't done since his student days in the
sixties. Suburban streets, trees, fences, shrubs and overgrown
alleyways - all are transformed in the quiet intensity of Ian's
lockdown paintings. He painted interiors too: the moon shining
through a bedroom window, objects on mantelpieces, the eeriness of
back gardens at dusk. As the year progressed, the crisp light of
spring gave way to the haze of summer and the gloom of autumn fogs.
The Light in Suburbia collects sixty of Ian's paintings from this
period: a remarkable record of his year spent trying to capture the
beauty of the unprepossessing everyday.
This volume is an in-depth and exquisitely illustrated guide to the
Second Age of Middle-earth, one of the least-explored periods of
Arda's history. The Illustrated World of Tolkien: The Second Age,
is the follow up companion to the best-selling The Illustrated
World of Tolkien, and gathers together artwork, charts, and
fascinating and scholarly writing from renowned Tolkien expert
David Day. Exploring the languages, poetry and elements of the
heroic ages of Norse, Greek and Roman mythologies that may have
influenced Tolkien's writing, it is a reference guide for any fan
of Tolkien's work, Tolkien's world and the imaginative brilliance
his vision inspired. The Second Age is made up of two great
narrative channels: on the one hand the rise and cataclysmic
downfall of the island-kingdom of Númenor and its aftermath, and
on the other the forging of the Rings of Power and the rise to
power of the new dark lord. Tolkien's sources for his Second Age
are, of course, as rich and varied as ever and this book delves
into some of these influences and shows how the power of Tolkien's
imagination is manifest even in the lesser-known parts of his
legendarium. This work is unofficial and is not authorised by the
Tolkien Estate or HarperCollins Publishers.

"Martin Bailey has written some of the most interesting books on
Vincent's life in France, where he produced his greatest work" -
Johan van Gogh, grandson of Theo, the artist's brother Studio of
the South tells the story of Van Gogh's stay in Arles, when his
powers were at their height. For Van Gogh, the south of France was
an exciting new land, bursting with life. He walked into the hills
inspired by the landscapes, and painted harvest scenes in the heat
of summer. He visited a fishing village where he saw the
Mediterranean for the first time, energetically capturing it in
paint. He painted portraits of friends and locals, and flower still
life paintings, culminating in the now iconic Sunflowers. He rented
the Yellow House, and gradually did it up, calling it 'an artist's
house', inviting Paul Gauguin to join him there. This encounter was
to have a profound impact on both of the artists. They painted side
by side, their collaboration coming to a dramatic end a few months
later. The difficulties Van Gogh faced led to his eventual decision
to retreat to the asylum at Saint-Remy. Based on extensive original
research, the book reveals discoveries that throw new light on the
legendary artist and give a definitive account of his fifteen
months in Provence, including his time at the Yellow House, his
collaboration with Gauguin and its tragic and shocking ending.
Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes - this collection of female
nudes is a celebration of the artist's view that the rubenesque
female form is beautiful and desirable. The art is soft and
sensual, and displays the larger woman in tasteful relaxed poses
that are at times dreamlike in form.
The names of plants that are so familiar to us magnolia,
bougainvillea, sequioa may just be names, but behind the names lie
stories of espionage and heroism, rivalry and mystery and
inspiration. In the Name of Plants relates the stories of these
people and the plants that were named after them. Each chapter
tells the story of the person for which each plant is named, many
of whom were pioneering explorers, collectors and botanists - such
as Alice Eastwood who has the yellow aster, Eastwoodia elegans,
named after her. Eastwood explored previously uncharted territories
in the 19th century and famously saved the California Academy of
Science's priceless plant collection from the 1906 San Francisco
earthquake. Subjects range from Charles Darwin (Darwinia) and
legendary French botanist Pierre Magnol (Magnolia), to US founding
fathers George Washington (Washingtonia) and Benjamin Franklin
(Franklinia). Each entry is accompanied by superb artworks from the
Library of the Natural History Museum, as well as photography of
specimens and wild plants and the essential taxonomic details and
geographic spread for each species.
Contains more than 60 beautiful artworks to colour in.
Rilke's prayerful responses to the french master's beseeching art
For a long time nothing, and then suddenly one has the right eyes.
Virtually every day in the fall of 1907, Rainer Maria Rilke returned to a Paris gallery to view a Cezanne exhibition. Nearly as frequently, he wrote dense and joyful letters to his wife, Clara Westhoff, expressing his dismay before the paintings and his ensuing revelations about art and life.
Rilke was knowledgeable about art and had even published monographs, including a famous study of Rodin that inspired his New Poems. But Cezanne's impact on him could not be conveyed in a traditional essay. Rilke's sense of kinship with Cezanne provides a powerful and prescient undercurrent in these letters -- passages from them appear verbatim in Rilke's great modernist novel, The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge. Letters on Cezanne is a collection of meaningfully private responses to a radically new art.
Collaboration The Mind's Eye is a collaboration between the
artist's emotional response to the poems and the immediacy of the
poet's reaction to nature and personal encounters. The Poet Gail
Gowers Cotton is a member of the Poetry Society and the British
Haiku Society. Her poems have appeared in the Societies' journals
as well as in other specialist magazines. She "scatters" her work
by leaving poems on buses, in cafes and tucked into library books.
The Mind's Eye is her second book. Her inspiration comes from
nature and personal encounters including memories of Ireland,
Africa, North Wales and visits to Sydenham Hill Woods, Dulwich
Picture Gallery and the Horniman Museum in South London, where she
now lives. The Artist Pat Keay graduated as a painter at the
Edinburgh College of Art in 1971. She has worked as an artist and
designer in Scotland, Kenya and London and now lives in Worthing.
Read more on www.patkeay.com. The illustrations come from Pat's
spontaneous reaction to the essence, rather than the detail, of a
particular Haiku.
Here is our garden. The gate is not locked But don't venture in if
you're easily shocked. We admit that our plantings won't please
everyone; But if you're unsettled, that's part of the fun. See
these creepers - like this one, that's wrapped round your feet?
They creep terribly fast, and they only eat meat. Oh, and though
they look pretty, please don't pick the flowers; They pick back,
and their nails are far sharper than ours. You've seen how our
chickens don't scratch in the mud? They're vampire hens, and they
much prefer blood. And our goat, with the red eyes like smouldering
coals? Satan's his name: he devours human souls. But don't be too
frightened: all's not what it seems. These flora and fauna are
tissues of dreams; And the monsters we dredge from the depths of
our brain Fall asleep when we wake...or they'd drive us insane.
