This book contains a selection of the papers presented at the 24th Meeting of the Euro Working Group on Financial Modelling held in Valencia, Spain, on April 8-10, 1.999. The Meeting took place in the Bancaja Cultural Center, a nice palace of the XIX century, located in the center of the city. Traditionally, members of the Euro Working Group on Financial Mod elling meet twice a year, hosted by different active groups in successions. The year 1999 was very special for us because the University of Valencia celebrates its fifth century. The Meeting was very well attended and of high quality. More than 90 participants, coming from 20 different countries debated 46 communications in regular sessions. The opening lecture was given by Prof. H. White, from the University of California, San Diego. The topics discussed were classified in nine sessions: Financial Theory, Financial Time Series, Risk Analysis, Portfolio Analysis, Financial Institu tions, Microstructures Market and Corporate Finance, Methods in Finance, Models in Finance and Derivatives. The papers collected in this volume provide a representative but not com plete sample of the fields where the members of the working group develop their scientific activity. The papers are a sample of this activity, and consist of theoretical papers as well as empirical ones."

The present volume collects a selection of revised papers which were presented at the 21st Euro Working Group on Financial Modelling Meeting, held in Venice (Italy), on October 29-31, 1997. The Working Group was founded in September 1986 in Lisbon with the objective of providing an international forum for the exchange of information and experience; encouraging research and interaction be tween financial economic theory and practice of financial decision mak ing, as well as circulating information among universities and financial institutions throughout Europe. The attendance to the Meeting was large and highly qualified. More than 80 participants, coming from 20 different Countries debated on 5 invited lectures and 40 communications in regular sessions. The sessions were located at the Island of San Servolo, on the Venetian lagoon, just in front of the Doges Palace. San Servolo Island is a natural oasis, in the midst of a unique urban setting, offering great relaxation in a peaceful park and a panoramic view of Venice. The friendly atmosphere added great benefit to the formal and informal discussions among the participants, -which is typical of E.W.G.F.M. Meetings. It is interesting to consider the story of the Meeting. The previous locations were held at Cyprus, Crete and Dubrovnik - former mile stones of the Venitian Republic influence on the Mediterranean Sea. Therefore, that this Meeting should be harboured in the heart of the Republic itself (namely, the Saint Mark basin), was only a matter of consequence."

Corporate Financial Decisions and Market Value - Studies on Dividend Policy, Price Volatility, and Ownership Structure... Corporate Financial Decisions and Market Value - Studies on Dividend Policy, Price Volatility, and Ownership Structure (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1998)
Giovanni Marseguerra
R2,989 Discovery Miles 29 890 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

How do managers of a firm choose between alternative finan cial policies? Can the choice of a particular financial policy affect the value of the firm? Since the early 1960s, the debate on these questions has been lively and interesting as economists have inves tigated the effect on the value of the firm of relaxing the various assumptions in the celebrated Modigliani-Miller theory. Further more, even if we stick to the MM-assumptions (that is, we assume perfect and complete capital markets, no taxes and symmetric information), and we therefore know that only optimally chosen investments determine firm's value, another interesting question arises: How does the structure of ownership affect investment de cisions (and, in turn, values)? This research monograph attempts to analyze some of the issues involved in this debate. It belongs to the area of mathematical economics and is intended to appeal to mathematical economists as well as economists and mathemati cians. It is meant to deal with economically relevant problems in a mathematically adequate way. To decide whether or not it succeeds in this task, it is up to the reader. I am greatly indebted to Dr. Margaret Bray for her supervi sion of my PhD thesis in Economics at the London School of Eco nomics from which this book resulted. She helped me as friend and adviser through many struggles in the last three years and invested a great amount of work in this thesis."

Financial Management - An Introduction (Hardcover): Jim McMenamin Financial Management - An Introduction (Hardcover)
Jim McMenamin
R5,420 Discovery Miles 54 200 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Finance is a notoriously difficult core subject for business undergraduates, which many find difficult to understand. The area has been dominated by large and complex introductory texts - often from the US - which many lecturers find too detailed and unwieldy. This carefully developed and researched text will fill this gap by providing a succinct, modular, UK-focused introduction to the subject of financial management. Quality controlled by an academic review panel, the content and approach has been rigorously developed to answer the needs of non-finance students. The user-friendly features and design will be of great appeal to the many undergraduates who find finance a difficult subject. Examples, models, formulas, and exercises are lucidly and clearly presented, supported by strong pedagogical features - learning objectives, worked examples, key learning points, further reading, practical assignments, references, case studies and teacher's guide. This ensures that Financial Management will prove the most accessible text for business and finance students.

Constantin Zopounidis
R3,072 Discovery Miles 30 720 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

th This book is devoted to the 19 Meeting of the EURO Working Group on Financial Modelling, held in Chania, Crete, Greece,November28-30, 1996. The EURO Working Group on Financial Modelling was founded in September 1986 in Lisbon. The primary field of interest for the Working Group can be described as "the development of financial models that help to solve problems facedby financial managers in the firm". From this point of view, the following objectivesof the Working Group are distinguished: * providing an international forum for exchange of information and experience on financial modelling; * encouraging research in financial modelling (i. e. new techniques, methodologies, software, empirical studies, etc. ); * stimulating and strengthening the interaction between financial economic theory and the practice of financial decision making; * cooperating and exchanging information with universities and financial institutions throughout Europe. According to the aboveobjectives, the basic aim of this book is to present some new operational approaches (i. e. neural nets, multicriteria analysis, new optimization algorithms, decision software, etc. ) for financial modelling, both in a theoretical and practical levels. Thus, the present volume is divided in nine chapters. The first chapter refers to the new trends in financial modelling and includes two invited papers by Gil-Aluja and Pardalos. The second chapter involves papers on the topic of high performance computing and finance which is a European union project in which participate some members of the EURO Working Group on Financial Modelling (Spronk, Zenios, Dempster, etc. ).

The Auditor - Quo Vadis? (Hardcover): Mervyn King, Linda De Beer The Auditor - Quo Vadis? (Hardcover)
Mervyn King, Linda De Beer
R4,245 Discovery Miles 42 450 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The audit profession is at a tipping point. Without significant innovation in its business model, staff recruitment strategies and audit execution processes, the audit profession may not remain relevant in the 21st century. The number of claims against auditors has significantly increased over the past twenty years due to the spate of corporate and audit failures early in the 21st century (Enron, Worldcom, Parmalat, etc.). Regulation to monitor professional and ethical standards has increased, leading audit firms to feel under even more financial pressure. In addition, the investor community is calling for greater insight and foresight from auditors. These challenges, coupled with the unlimited liability regime of auditors still applicable in many jurisdictions, are making audit firms and regulators nervous as to the systemic risk of another one of the Big 4 failing. And yet, the audit profession is in place to protect businesses, their wider stakeholder groups, including clients and investors, and society at large. Therefore, this book asks the important question about the profession's future and engages a broad readership in the discussion of audit failure and reform. Intended to help readers to get up to speed with the issues and possible solutions quickly, this book assists directors, investors, business people and regulators, especially those with a non-financial background, to gain a greater understanding of the challenges and threats being faced by the audit profession, which in turn could disrupt the capital market and affect businesses across the globe. The book outlines the critical success factors needed for a sustainable audit profession.

Creating Shareholder Value - A Guide for Managers and Investors (Hardcover, 2nd Revised edition): Alfred Rappaport Creating Shareholder Value - A Guide for Managers and Investors (Hardcover, 2nd Revised edition)
Alfred Rappaport
R970 R801 Discovery Miles 8 010 Save R169 (17%) Ships in 5 - 10 working days

The ultimate test of corporate strategy, the only reliable measure, is whether it creates economic value for shareholders. Now, in this substantially revised and updated edition of his 1986 business classic, Creating Shareholder Value, Alfred Rappaport provides managers and investors with the practical tools needed to generate superior returns. After a decade of downsizings frequently blamed on shareholder value decision making, this book presents a new and indepth assessment of the rationale for shareholder value. Further, Rappaport presents provocative new insights on shareholder value applications to: (1) business planning, (2) performance evaluation, (3) executive compensation, (4) mergers and acquisitions, (5) interpreting stock market signals, and (6) organizational implementation. Readers will be particularly interested in Rappaport's answers to three management performance evaluation questions: (1) What is the most appropriate measure of performance? (2) What is the most appropriate target level of performance? and (3) How should rewards be linked to performance? The recent acquisition of Duracell International by Gillette is analyzed in detail, enabling the reader to understand the critical information needed when assessing the risks and rewards of a merger from both sides of the negotiating table.

The shareholder value approach presented here has been widely embraced by publicly traded as well as privately held companies worldwide. Brilliant and incisive, this is the one book that should be required reading for managers and investors who want to stay on the cutting edge of success in a highly competitive global economy.

Recent Research in Financial Modelling (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1993): Evert J. Stokking, Giovanni... Recent Research in Financial Modelling (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1993)
Evert J. Stokking, Giovanni Zambruno
R2,986 Discovery Miles 29 860 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The book contains a selection of recently revised papers that have initiallybeen presented at two different meetings of the EURO Working Group on Financial Modelling. The papers related to the microstructure of capital markets provide evidence that the price dynamics of financial assets can on- ly be explained - and modelled - on the basis of a careful examination of the decision process which leads traders to interact and fix the equilibrium prices. The papers by Pec- cati, Luciano, Ferrari and Cornaglia belong to this catego- ry, and help considerably unterstand the performance of mar- kets which are relatively far from perfection (owing to thinness, frictions, taxation and the like). This is indeed the case for some European Exchanges. The very foundations of quantitative financial analysis have been discussed in the contributions of Luciano, Canestrelli, Uberti and Van der Meulen. The classical - although recent - advances on the pricing of derivative securities have been analyzed and applied by Kremer, Hallerbach and Jensen/Niel- son, thus demonstrating that established theories still pro- vide space for a deeper investigation. Another major topic of interest relates to empirical studies about how markets behave with respect to theoretical models. In this respect, the contributions of Viren, Bradfield and Wilkie/Pollock are quite significant. They present evidence based on real data discussed in the light of advanced stati- stical techniques. It is apparent that Corporate Finance and Capital Markets are becoming more and more related and in- teractingwith each other.

Modelling Reality and Personal Modelling (Paperback, 1993 ed.): Richard Flavell Modelling Reality and Personal Modelling (Paperback, 1993 ed.)
Richard Flavell
R1,637 Discovery Miles 16 370 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The recent introduction of two European index options on the FTSE Eurotrack 100 and the Eurotop 100 is evidence of a demand from investors to hedge pan-European risk. The FTSE Eurotrack 100 was designed to closely resemble the longer established and widely quoted Morgan Stanley European index. The Eurotrack 100 covers a hundred companies in eleven countries in continental Europe. The index is denominated in DM and' a breakdown by value into the different countries covered is given in figure 1. Capitalisation weights for Figure 1 FT-SE Eurotrack 100 Index Norway mark Germany Italy Switzerland France Netherlands Another recently introduced European index is the Eurotop 100 index denominated in EeUs, this index contains twenty two UK companies which represent 27% by value of this index. The attraction of investments in these indices is that they provide a basis for weighted exposure to Europe, investors can then build on this 240 basis by investment in individual countries. The multinational context of the universe of shares defined by this index raises some new questions for the selection of portfolios, whether the portfolios are chosen for absolute performance or to track the index. Various possible objectives of portfolio selection will be discussed, in all cases the crucial role of the covariance matrix of returns is clear. The extra source of risk present in a multinational portfolio is the combination of country risk coupled with foreign exchange risk. Two models of the return covariance matrix are proposed and examined.

Accounting for Non-Accountants (Hardcover, 12th Revised edition): David Horner Accounting for Non-Accountants (Hardcover, 12th Revised edition)
David Horner
R2,307 Discovery Miles 23 070 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Accounting has a reputation as a technical and jargon-heavy subject, but there is no reason why those without formal training cannot master the basics of interpreting accounts and making good decisions. Accounting for Non-Accountants assumes no prior knowledge of the subject area and is designed to serve as an introductory text for managers and non-specialists who wish to gain an oversight of the accounting discipline. The book covers both financial and management accounting in sufficient detail to allow data to be interpreted but in a clear and accessible manner so the reader can quickly gain an understanding of the basic principles of the subject area. Now in its 12th edition, Accounting for Non-Accountants has been fully updated to the latest regulatory requirements including the UK GAAP framework, International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and International Accounting Standards (IAS). The final chapter focuses on the impact of changes in the economic environment on businesses and there are introductions to areas including tax, transfer pricing and creative accounting. This practical guide includes review questions in each chapter, with answers and workings where appropriate, and is supported online by over 200 questions and a glossary to develop a firm understanding of all topics.
