Recent Research in Financial Modelling (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1993): Evert J. Stokking, Giovanni... Recent Research in Financial Modelling (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1993)
Evert J. Stokking, Giovanni Zambruno
R2,841 Discovery Miles 28 410 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The book contains a selection of recently revised papers that have initiallybeen presented at two different meetings of the EURO Working Group on Financial Modelling. The papers related to the microstructure of capital markets provide evidence that the price dynamics of financial assets can on- ly be explained - and modelled - on the basis of a careful examination of the decision process which leads traders to interact and fix the equilibrium prices. The papers by Pec- cati, Luciano, Ferrari and Cornaglia belong to this catego- ry, and help considerably unterstand the performance of mar- kets which are relatively far from perfection (owing to thinness, frictions, taxation and the like). This is indeed the case for some European Exchanges. The very foundations of quantitative financial analysis have been discussed in the contributions of Luciano, Canestrelli, Uberti and Van der Meulen. The classical - although recent - advances on the pricing of derivative securities have been analyzed and applied by Kremer, Hallerbach and Jensen/Niel- son, thus demonstrating that established theories still pro- vide space for a deeper investigation. Another major topic of interest relates to empirical studies about how markets behave with respect to theoretical models. In this respect, the contributions of Viren, Bradfield and Wilkie/Pollock are quite significant. They present evidence based on real data discussed in the light of advanced stati- stical techniques. It is apparent that Corporate Finance and Capital Markets are becoming more and more related and in- teractingwith each other.

Modelling Reality and Personal Modelling (Paperback, 1993 ed.): Richard Flavell Modelling Reality and Personal Modelling (Paperback, 1993 ed.)
Richard Flavell
R1,559 Discovery Miles 15 590 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The recent introduction of two European index options on the FTSE Eurotrack 100 and the Eurotop 100 is evidence of a demand from investors to hedge pan-European risk. The FTSE Eurotrack 100 was designed to closely resemble the longer established and widely quoted Morgan Stanley European index. The Eurotrack 100 covers a hundred companies in eleven countries in continental Europe. The index is denominated in DM and' a breakdown by value into the different countries covered is given in figure 1. Capitalisation weights for Figure 1 FT-SE Eurotrack 100 Index Norway mark Germany Italy Switzerland France Netherlands Another recently introduced European index is the Eurotop 100 index denominated in EeUs, this index contains twenty two UK companies which represent 27% by value of this index. The attraction of investments in these indices is that they provide a basis for weighted exposure to Europe, investors can then build on this 240 basis by investment in individual countries. The multinational context of the universe of shares defined by this index raises some new questions for the selection of portfolios, whether the portfolios are chosen for absolute performance or to track the index. Various possible objectives of portfolio selection will be discussed, in all cases the crucial role of the covariance matrix of returns is clear. The extra source of risk present in a multinational portfolio is the combination of country risk coupled with foreign exchange risk. Two models of the return covariance matrix are proposed and examined.

Mahmoud Ezzamel, David Heathfield
R1,538 Discovery Miles 15 380 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The purpose of this book is to offer a small token in memory of Ken Hilton, who died prematurely at the age of 52 in February 1990. The book contains contributions from a number of 1eading academics; some were close c- leagues of Ken's at the University of Southampton, some have been at other universities but knew Ken fair1y well, and still some who never met Ken but who knew of him through bis work. The unifying motivation for all of them, however, was their immense sense of loss of an extremely proactive and excellent academic. Having led the research group on the Southampton Econometric Model project for three years, Ken was appointed to the Chair of Financia1 Control at the University of Southampton in 1970; at that time this was one of only a handful of similar Chairs in the UK. Most of Ken's subsequent academic career was devoted to contributing to the study of financial control, initially in the private sector and subsequently in the public sector. The breadth of bis interests was demonstrated by bis enviable ability to contribute to the areas of industrial economics, accounting, and management science. We hope therefore that this volume which embraces contributions from leading academics in each of these three fields is a fitting tribute to Ken's work.

Optimal Dynamic Investment Policies of a Value Maximizing Firm (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1989):... Optimal Dynamic Investment Policies of a Value Maximizing Firm (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1989)
Peter M Kort
R1,502 Discovery Miles 15 020 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

1.1. Scope of the Book This book is a contribution to the area of "dynamic models of the firm." The motivation for this kind of research is the following: Empirical studies (e.g. Albach (1976)) have shown that the development of the firm over time can be divided into different stages. such as growth. stationarity and contraction. In order to understand and evaluate these stages in a proper way. it is important to develop a suitable theoretical framework. To that end. economists have applied dynamic mathematical techniques. such as optimal control theory. calculus of variations and dynamic programming to design and analyse dynamic models of the firm. In this way. the economic theory of the firm is extended to a dynamic context. Within the field of the dynamics of the firm this book - develops a general investment decision rule. based on the concept "net present value of marginal investment." which is applicable in deterministic dynamic models of the firm; - studies the influence of adjustment costs of investment on optimal dynamic firm behavior; - extends the stochastic dynamic theory of the firm by connecting it with a dynamic version of the Capital Asset Pricing Model. Before elaborating on "the dynamics of the firm." we first review the subject of net present value in the classical analysis.

Financial Management in Construction Contracting (Paperback, illustrated edition): A. Ross Financial Management in Construction Contracting (Paperback, illustrated edition)
A. Ross
R1,500 Discovery Miles 15 000 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

This authoritative text provides a detailed insight into how construction companies manage their finances at both corporate and project level. It will guide students and practitioners through the complexities of the financial reporting of construction projects within the constraints of accepted accounting practice. The book is written for non-accountants and from a contractor's perspective and is equally relevant to subcontractors and main contractors.

The authors examine the relationship between the external annual accounts and the internal cost-value reconciliation process. CVR is covered in depth and the authors consider issues such as interim payments, subcontract accounts, contractual claims, final accounts, cash flow management and the reporting of the physical and financial progress of contracts.

A broad perspective of all the financial aspects of contracting is taken along with related legal issues and the authors explain how things operate in the 'real world'. They describe good practice in financial control while at the same time being honest about some of the more questionable practices that can - and do - happen. The approach taken is unique as the financial management of construction projects is considered from the perspective of the contractor's quantity surveyor. The book deals with the real issues that surveyors have to address when using their judgment to report turnover, profitability, cash flow, and work in progress on projects and the financial problems faced by subcontractors are frankly and pragmatically explored.

The payment and notice requirements of the Construction Act are explained in detail and relevant provisions of JCT2011, NEC3, ICC, DOM/1 and other standard contracts and subcontracts are also covered.

"Financial Management in Construction Contracting" addresses the wide variety of external factors that influence how construction companies operate, including government policy, banking covenants and the financial aspects of supply chain management. Cost reporting systems are described and real-life examples are used to illustrate cost reports, accrual systems and how computerised systems can be employed to provide the QS with information that can be audited.

Examples drawn from practice demonstrate how work-in-progress (WIP) is reported in contracting. Cost value reconciliation reports are featured and the book demonstrates how adjustments are made for overmeasure, undermeasure, subcontract liabilities and WIP as well as explaining the processes that contractors use when analysing external valuations.

This is the ideal core text for final year degree and post-graduate level modules on Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management, Construction Management and Project Management courses and will provide an invaluable source of reference for quantity surveyors and others who may be engaged in the financial management of construction projects.

The Fundamental Rules of Risk Management (Hardcover, New): Nigel Lewis The Fundamental Rules of Risk Management (Hardcover, New)
Nigel Lewis
R5,529 Discovery Miles 55 290 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The consequences of taking on risk can be ruinous to personal finances, professional careers, corporate survivability, and even nation states. Yet many risk managers do not have a clear understanding of the basics. Requiring no statistical or mathematical background, The Fundamental Rules of Risk Management gives you the knowledge to successfully handle risk in your organization. The book begins with a deep investigation into the behavioral roots of risk. Using both historical and contemporary contexts, author Nigel Da Costa Lewis carefully details the indisputable truths surrounding many of the behavioral biases that induce risk. He exposes the fallacy of the wisdom of experts, explains why you cannot rely on regulators, outlines the characteristics of the "glad game," and demonstrates how high intelligence or lack thereof can lead to loss of hard-earned wealth. He also discusses the weaknesses and failures of modern risk management. Moving on to elements often overlooked by risk managers, Dr. Lewis traces the link between corporate governance and risk management. He then covers core lessons surrounding the role of risk managers as well as the difficult subject of integrated, single lens analysis of risk. The book also explores aspects of spreadsheet risk and draws on lessons learned in the information systems and software engineering communities to provide guidance on selecting the right risk management system. It concludes with a discussion on the most dominant of risk measures-value at risk. Having a clear understanding about risk separates successful professionals, companies, and economies from history's forgotten failures. Through examples and case studies, this thought-provoking book shows how the rules of risk can work to protect and enhance investor value.
