Hanging Out - Community-Based After-School Programs for Children (Hardcover): Ruth Garner Hanging Out - Community-Based After-School Programs for Children (Hardcover)
Ruth Garner
R2,533 Discovery Miles 25 330 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

There is an unsettledness now in after-school childcare. The stay-at-home mom years are largely over. Will children, even very young children, stay home alone or hang out with peers, risking loneliness or engaging in problem behavior? Will some new form of supervised care emerge? The authors in this collection have spent time in community after-school programs and have learned what happens there.

The authors suggest that after-school programs can be an important part of a system of childcare--as long as we can find ways to build programs for small and scattered populations as well as for densely packed ones, and as long as the money to fund programs can be found. The money is important. Many of the programs discussed in this book are specifically targeted to children from families with low incomes. These are the families least likely to be able to pay for care. A reader leaves this book with both anxiety and hope about the future of childcare in the United States.

Family Policy and the Organisation of Childcare - Hierarchies of Care Ideals (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Borbala Kovacs Family Policy and the Organisation of Childcare - Hierarchies of Care Ideals (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Borbala Kovacs
R3,309 Discovery Miles 33 090 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explains and theorises the ways in which family policy instruments come to shape the routine care arrangements of young children. Drawing on interviews with close to a hundred parents from very different walks of life in urban and rural Romania, the book provides a rich account of the care arrangement transitions these parents experience during their children's first five years of life. The influence of family policies emerges as complex and uneven, affecting childcare decisions both directly and indirectly by contributing to the reproduction and legitimation of age-related hierarchies of care ideals. These cultural artefacts, reflective of both longstanding institutional legacies and recent policy innovations between 2006 and 2015, are the prism through which mothers and fathers from diverse backgrounds view and make decisions about their children's care. This unique volume will be of interest and value to students and scholars of childcare, its organisation and family policy, specifically in post-socialist contexts.

Claudia Equit, Jade Purtell
R4,072 Discovery Miles 40 720 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

For centuries, residential child and youth care systems worldwide have provided homes for vulnerable children and adolescents. The implementation of children's rights, especially the right of participation, is assessed as an important base for promoting the best interests of the child in an out-of-home care environment. Featuring contributions from distinguished international authors, this volume offers an in-depth understanding of crucial participation processes and underlying power structures when involving young people in decision-making about their care and everyday life in different out-of-home care institutions. Contributions cover a broad spectrum of current research findings concerning the participation of young people in foster families and residential living groups in Australia, Canada, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Norway, Sweden, and Switzerland as well as cross-nationals perspective on children and young people's participation in foster and residential care placements in Great Britain and France. The volume fills major gaps concerning the participation of young people in different out-of-home care and policy settings and will be required reading for policymakers, researchers, practitioners, scholars, and students interested in increasing opportunities for young people's participation and creating better out-of-home care settings for vulnerable young people.

Parental Imprisonment and Children's Rights (Paperback): Fiona Donson, Aisling Parkes Parental Imprisonment and Children's Rights (Paperback)
Fiona Donson, Aisling Parkes
R1,383 Discovery Miles 13 830 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book brings together internationally renowned academics and professionals from a variety of disciplines who, in a variety of ways, seek to understand the legal, conceptual and practical consequences of parental imprisonment through a children's rights lens. Children whose parents have been incarcerated are often referred to as "invisible victims of crime and the penal system." It is well accepted that the imprisonment of a parent, even for a short period of time, not only negatively affects the lives of children but it can also result in a gross violation of their fundamental human rights, such as the right of access to their parent and the right to have an input into decision-making processes affecting them, the outcomes of which will without doubt affect the life of the child concerned. This collection foregrounds the voice of these children as it explores transdisciplinary boundaries and examines the practice and development of the rights of both children and their families within the wider dynamic of criminal justice and penology practice. The text is divided into three parts which are dedicated to 1) hearing the voices of children with parents in prison, 2) understanding to what extent children's rights informs prison policy, and 3) demonstrating how law in the form of children's rights can help frame both court sentencing and prison practice in a way that minimises the harm that contact with the prison system can cause. The research drawn upon in this book has been conducted in a number of European countries and demonstrates both good and bad practice as far as the implementation of children's rights is concerned in the context of parental incarceration. An accessible and compelling read, this book will appeal to students and scholars of law, children's rights, criminology, sociology, social work, psychology, penology and all those interested in, and working towards, protecting the rights of children who have a parent in prison.

Treating Child Sexual Abuse in Family, Group and Clinical Settings - Culturally Intelligent Practice for Caribbean and... Treating Child Sexual Abuse in Family, Group and Clinical Settings - Culturally Intelligent Practice for Caribbean and International Contexts (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Adele D. Jones, Ena Trotman Jemmott, Hazel Da Breo, Priya Maharaj
R1,433 Discovery Miles 14 330 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Presenting real-life case studies of child sexual abuse in the Caribbean as a basis for discussing interventions and models of practice that are relevant for a wide range of cultural and social settings, this multi-disciplinary text will be of interest to scholars, professionals and practitioners alike. Contributors to this volume demonstrate how sexual abuse is never just a problem of the individual: structures of inequality and the intersection of the factors they give rise to help to explain why some children are more at risk of abuse than others. Furthermore, the sub-systems in which lives are lived can compound risk and vulnerability or alternatively, can be sources of support and change. This book draws on these ideas to discuss practice across a range of service users: children, adolescent girls, teenage mothers, children with learning disabilities, fathers, mothers, women who abuse, juvenile sex offenders and children in residential care. p>

Surveillance Schools - Security, Discipline and Control in Contemporary Education (Hardcover): E Taylor Surveillance Schools - Security, Discipline and Control in Contemporary Education (Hardcover)
E Taylor
R1,737 Discovery Miles 17 370 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

With the growth of surveillance technologies globally, Taylor focuses on the phenomenon of the Surveillance School and explores the impact that continual monitoring is having upon school children, education and society.
Surveillance Schools are characterised by routine practices that identify, verify, categorise and track pupils. With biometric technologies such as fingerprinting and iris scanning, CCTV, microchips in ID cards and 'smart uniforms', metal detectors and police officers patrolling the school corridors with sniffer dogs, it is clear that schools have become increasingly fortified.
Taylor outlines the phenomenon of the Surveillance School, mapping the driving forces behind them and analyses the impact. The evidence emerging from empirical studies suggests that often these technologies do little to safeguard young people, do not represent financial savings or increased efficiency, but serve to strip pupils of their privacy, undermine their trust in others and create an atmosphere of suspicion.
This insightful research ultimately questions whether the incessant use of omnipresent technological surveillance has the ability to displace the very building blocks of democratic society. Taylor presents the school as a microcosm of society and invites us to experience a prophetic glance into the future of the surveillance society.

The Future of Health, Wellbeing and Physical Education - Optimising Children's Health through Local and Global Community... The Future of Health, Wellbeing and Physical Education - Optimising Children's Health through Local and Global Community Partnerships (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Timothy Lynch
R1,786 Discovery Miles 17 860 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book uses the example of a partnership journey between universities, schools, the local health industry as well as a number of government organisations which worked to ensure the growth of physical education in primary education. The initiative employed the United Nations (UN) ideals as a model and contextualised them within local schools and communities. What began as a pathway seed quickly grew to involve multi-stakeholder partnerships and therefore explores how the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) may be implemented at a grass roots level.

Lisa Cherry
R4,493 Discovery Miles 44 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this poignant book, Lisa Cherry brings together a collection of candid and personal reflections on the care system in the UK, offering alternative ways of thinking about the care experience, supporting better ways of working, and providing justification for a trauma-informed lens to be applied to all forms of work with those in care. Through personal insights and reflections, the book brings often-unheard stories vividly to life, beginning with the author's own. These are stories about love and pain; hurt and isolation; the depth of lived experience that makes up a life; how we live our lives through our relationships with others and where we feel we fit in. In this thoughtfully compiled third edition, original contributors look back on their own reflections from the lives that they live now, new stories bring new perspectives, and discussion points provide the opportunity to consider the realities of the care experience as well as life beyond. Whilst each story is unique, shared themes reveal the truth of the care system and, coming at a time where there is a real opportunity for change, the narratives in this book are ultimately stories of hope and connection. This is crucial reading for policy makers, those working in social work, education and adoption, as well as care experienced adults.

Women's Work And Child Welfare In The Third World (Paperback): Joanne Leslie Women's Work And Child Welfare In The Third World (Paperback)
Joanne Leslie
R1,386 Discovery Miles 13 860 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Recent trends in women's work and child survival and development in developing countries raise concerns about the relationship between these two key elements of development. This paper reviews and analyzes the methodology and findings of 50 studies of both women's work and infant feeding practices, and women's work and child nutritional status. Although the pattern of findings is complex and occasionally contradictory, the paper concludes that overall there is little evidence of a negative effect of maternal employment on child nutrition, and therefore no justification for limiting women's labor force participation on the grounds of promoting child welfare.

"This study is extremely well done; a fluently written, scholarly account and analysis that provides a necessary addition to the "post-Soviet" literature, which has few such sharp analyses of the family, not least because the author takes on relevant debates and histories that both add considerable depth to this discussion and widen the applicability of the primary focus. Thus, we are given a marvellously careful and detailed insight into the workings of a provincial bureaucracy still shaped by the mores and customs of a Soviet bureaucracy but now faced with the sharply different context of the post-Soviet world." . Catherine Alexander, Goldsmiths College, London

Childhood held a special place in Soviet society: seen as the key to a better future, children were imagined as the only privileged class. Therefore, the rapid emergence in post-Soviet Russia of the vast numbers of vulnerable 'social orphans', or children who have living relatives but grow up in residential care institutions, caught the public by surprise, leading to discussions of the role and place of childhood in the new society. Based on an in-depth study the author explores dissonance between new post-Soviet forms of family and economy, and lingering Soviet attitudes, revealing social orphans as an embodiment of a long-standing power struggle between the state and the family. The author uncovers parallels between (post-) Soviet and Western practices in child welfare and attitudes towards 'bad' mothers, and proposes a new way of interpreting kinship where the state is an integral member.

The true story of a foundling. 'Extraordinary ... A fascinating, moving book: part history of the Foundling Hospital and the development of child psychology, part Cowan's own story, and part that of Cowan's mother' LUCY SCHOLES, TELEGRAPH Growing up in a wealthy enclave outside San Francisco, Justine Cowan's life seems idyllic. But her mother's unpredictable temper drives Justine from home the moment she is old enough to escape. It is only after her mother dies that she finds herself pulling at the threads of a story half-told - her mother's upbringing in London's Foundling Hospital. Haunted by this secret history, Justine travels across the sea and deep into the past to discover the girl her mother once was. Here, with the vividness of a true storyteller, she pieces together her mother's childhood alongside the history of the Foundling Hospital: from its idealistic beginnings in the eighteenth century, how it influenced some of England's greatest creative minds - from Handel to Dickens, its shocking approach to childcare and how it survived the Blitz only to close after the Second World War. This was the environment that shaped a young girl then known as Dorothy Soames, who was left behind by a mother forced by stigma and shame to give up her child; who withstood years of physical and emotional abuse, dreaming of escape as German bombers circled the skies, unaware all along that her own mother was fighting to get her back. The Secret Life of Dorothy Soames is a gripping memoir and revelatory investigation into the history of the Foundling Hospital and one girl who grew up in its care - the author's own mother. Safeguarding and Mental Health Support in Contemporary Childhood - How the Deserving/Undeserving Paradigm from the Past... Safeguarding and Mental Health Support in Contemporary Childhood - How the Deserving/Undeserving Paradigm from the Past Overshadows the Present (Paperback)
Wendy Sims-Schouten
R771 Discovery Miles 7 710 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Approaches regarding safeguarding and mental health in childhood have been in constant flux. Framed within a critical realist ontology, this book provides insight into causal factors (individual, material, institutional) and social structures that impact on the continued legacy of the 'deserving/undeserving' paradigm. Drawing on historical data from children taken into care by the Waifs and Strays Society (1881-1918) and contemporary data from interviews with young care leavers and safeguarding practitioners/professionals, this book shows how at present and in the past, certain children and families miss(ed) out on support and interventions due to complex needs, financial cuts and ever-changing thresholds. It is the group of children referred to as 'victims', a term used for the most disadvantaged children who have spent time in care, have complex mental health needs and have had the most damaging pre-care family experiences, who are the focus of this book. This book shows that in an attempt to provide services where there are ever increasing thresholds for access and cuts to resources, a resurgence of the 'deserving/undeserving' paradigm reflects a contemporary justification regarding who is 'entitled' to help and who is not. This book will be of interest to all scholars and students of social work, social policy, childhood studies, sociology and education policy.

How does one change the attitudes and practices of child protective services (CPS) a statewide bureaucracy often overwhelmed and understaffed? First, take an outsider to the system, Insoo Kim Berg, who has a vision and a solution-focused model. Add an insider, Susan Kelly, who understands the system. Spend many hours with CPS workers in the field, learning from them and helping them make the shift from a deficit perspective to a collaborative model that emphasizes strengths and solutions. Envision and implement change throughout the system. Celebrate small successes on the way to building family self-sufficiency and integrity. This recipe for reforming child protective services is being followed in many public child welfare agencies, with growing success. In Building Solutions the authors explain how to conceptualize, implement, and sustain this hopeful and positive frame in a daily practice for dedicated frontline workers as well as for those in supervision, management, and administration. The book has two parts. In the first, the authors put child protective services in context, introducing the system and their new approach, giving a brief history of child protection in the United States, and setting the stage for change. In the second part, the authors walk readers through the nuts and bolts of implementation, from the first phone call to case closure including discussions about placing a child out of the home. Berg and Kelly also discuss supervision, consultation, and ongoing training, as well as their vision of the future of CPS. This book is not a manual; it is a challenge to step out of the traditional CPS "box" and think differently to create client-driven services that make sense. The authors challenge CPS administrators, supervisors, and workers to begin conversations about how the system can be more helpful and respectful to the families so that the parents can get what they need to care for their children. Building Solutions should have a place on the desk of everyone involved in child protective services."

The 503 titles annotated in this volume are divided into fiction and nonfiction by reading level. A comprehensive subject, as well as title and author index, assures access to the books cited within the bibliography. The lengthy annotations will allow the readers an opportunity to evaluate each title's usefulness. The bibliography encompasses such topics as the age of arrival, sibling adoption, single-parent adoption, foster parent adoption, step-parent and relative adoption, transracial and intercountry adoption, Amerasian children, racial identity, minority families, special needs, large families, birthparents, search and reunion, surrogacy and open adoption, and some of the less pleasant aspects of adoption. This book, compiled by a reference librarian who is also an adoptive parent, brings a wealth of information to adoptees, adoptive parents and support groups, adoption agencies and their personnel, librarians, educators and family therapists. The experiences and emotions described in the hundreds of compiled titles duplicate and validate those of every adoptive family. Emily M. Douglas; Contributions by Loretta L. C. Brady, Melissa Brown, Esther F. S. Carvalhaes, Jason Castillo, …
R3,672 Discovery Miles 36 720 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Innovations in Child and Family Policy tackles many of the common problems and challenges that are considered to be at the heart of child and family policy: family creation, economic support, childrearing, and family care-giving. Innovations begins by defining child and family policy and discussing the history of this growing specialization within the social sciences. The main chapters of Innovations address policy and programmatic solutions to problems that face families by topic area: (1) early childhood and education, (2) government interventions with family violence, children's welfare, and the justice system, and (3) supports for children and families. Specifically, the chapters in Innovations address the availability of child care, family medical leave, special needs children, parent involvement in their children's education, preventing and addressing child abuse and neglect, children who witness partner violence, child support orders, children of incarcerated fathers, and young adults in the justice system. What makes this book unique is that it contains applied research from many program evaluations or assessments of existing state-level legislation. Social scientists from multiple disciplines examine the efficacy such programs and policies to make recommendations for expanded or new child and family policies. For our novice and/or student readers, we hope that Innovations will help them to develop a greater sense of what academics, professionals, and politicians mean when they speak of "child and family policy" and also an appreciation for how social science research can contribute to policy-making to support children and families. For our more advanced readers, we hope that these chapters make a significant contribution to the conversations regarding how multidisciplinary social science research can inform policy recommendations. For all of our readers, we hope that the use-inspired research presented in Innovations will help to strengthen and support the we

The Development of Child Protection Law and Policy - Children, Risk and Modernities (Paperback): Kieran Walsh The Development of Child Protection Law and Policy - Children, Risk and Modernities (Paperback)
Kieran Walsh
R1,384 Discovery Miles 13 840 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines how child protection law has been shaped by the transition to late modernity and how it copes with the ever-changing concept of risk. The book traces the evolution of the contemporary child protection system through historical changes, assessing the factors that have influenced the development of legal responses to abuse over a 130-year period. It does so by focussing on the Republic of Ireland where child protection has become emblematic of wider social change. The work draws on a wide range of primary and secondary sources including legislation, case law and official and media reports of child protection inquiries. It also utilises insights developed through an extensive examination of parliamentary debates on child protection matters. These materials are assessed through the lens of critical discourse analysis to explore the relationship between law, social policy and social theory as they effect child protection. While the book utilises primarily Irish sources, this multidisciplinary approach ensures the argument has international applicability. The book will be a valuable resource for all those with an interest in the development of child protection law.
