John Dewey wrote in multiple places that education should be an
experience of the content and processes of life itself. Too often,
social studies is taught in a way that tells students about
real-life, but fails to engage them in the process of life for
which Dewey advocated. The core purpose of simulations is to
reflect the processes, events, and phenomena expressed in a variety
of real-life domains. They engage students in these reflections of
real life meaningfully, as active agents who have the power to make
decisions that impact the direction of events and that lead to both
intended and unintended consequences. Because of the nature of
simulations, students who participate in them are able to build
their capacities to think in complex and critical ways. Today,
despite the growing evidence that simulations have an important
role to play in the teaching of social studies, they remain an
underutilized and undervalued approach to the discipline. One of
the key obstacles to their widespread adoption is the limited
availability of training resources available to social studies
teachers. Teachers need support to develop a new vision of social
studies teaching and learning coupled with practical guidance
necessary to implement simulations effectively. This volume
provides teachers with both. When teachers are able to weave
simulations effectively into the fabric of social studies teaching
and learning, they help to promote social studies experiences that
are both powerful and purposeful. They offer students an experience
of the discipline that is, indeed, More Like Life Itself.
Explore traditional and alternative models in human behavior Human
Behavior and the Social Environment challenges students to use the
traditional and alternative paradigm framework to evaluate and
understand the relationship between theories of human behavior and
the social environment and their use in social work practice.
Through this examination, readers will better understand the people
they will work with on individual, family, group, organizational,
community, and global levels. By engaging with critical issues in
social work and human behavior, students will recognize the range
of social systems in which people live and the ways these systems
promote or deter people in their health and wellbeing. Updated with
a new organization and emphasis on critical thinking, the 7th
Edition represents the most comprehensive and in-depth revision
since its original publication. New chapters explore the role of
neuroscience (Chapter 6) and interplay of identity, diversity, and
oppression issues (Chapter 7) in the context of development. New
content is included on such topics as the use of technology,
evidence-based practice interventions, and environmental social
work. Thoroughly updated, every chapter includes information about
some of the most pressing issues concerning social work and human
behavior in dynamic interaction with the larger physical and social
environments of today and tomorrow.
Read the story of the Founding Father who inspired the smash Broadway musical.
Born in the British West Indies and orphaned as a child, Alexander Hamilton made his way to the American Colonies and studied to become a lawyer. He joined a local militia during the American Revolution, rose to the rank of Major General, and became the chief aide to General George Washington. After the war, he became the first U.S. Secretary of the Treasury. He founded the Bank of New York and The New York Post newspaper. He served as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention and is also celebrated as a co-author of The Federalist Papers, a series of essays that are still used today to interpret the U.S. Constitution.
The end of his life became a national scandal when he was shot and killed in a duel with then-Vice President Aaron Burr.
Originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Dance
Education, this collection brings together a number of insightful
chapters which explore themes relating to responsible citizenship
within dance education. Presenting research, scholarship,
experiences, and pedagogical approaches from national and
international contexts, and diverse educational settings, the
chapters included in this book demonstrate how the study of dance
requires students to develop a clear sense of self- and
group-responsibility. Including high-level contributions from a
range of researchers, educators, and dance instructors, the volume
investigates how research and instruction can contribute to
building communities; and ensure that dance education reacts to
shifting social, political, and cultural norms. Responsible
citizenship and civic engagement are examined in relation to course
content, pedagogical approaches, systemic practices, and cultural
assumptions. This valuable collection of diverse and insightful
chapters will be of great interest to researchers, post-graduate
academics, teachers and instructors in the fields of dance and
teacher education.
He must make a speech to a joint session of Congress that will
build support for America's entry to World War II, but to do that
he needs an armored vehicle in which to make the short trip from
the White House to the Capitol Building. According to legend, the
car Roosevelt rode in that day, borrowed from the FBI's impound
lot, was an armored Cadillac V-8 built for gangster Al Capone in
the late 1920s to shield himself from enemies. Is the legend true,
or is it an American tall tale in the tradition of Paul Bunyan or
John Henry? Either way, it's an ideal vehicle to compare and
contrast the lives of two American men who grew up within miles of
one another: one a great president, the other an infamous villain.

The question at the heart of the book is what might an education
with self-care and care-for-others look like? Juxtaposing
self-understanding through the method of currere and the historical
character of hakbeolism (a concept indigenous to Korea referring to
a kind of social status people achieve based on a shared academic
background), this book articulates how subjective reconstruction of
self in conjunction with historical study can be transformative,
and how this can be extended to social change. Articulating how
having one's own standard can be a way of making one's life a work
of art, the author looks at how Korean schooling exercises coercive
care, disconfirmation, and the "whip of love" for the children's
own good. Emphasis is given to the internalized status of these
practices in both students and teachers and to teachers' and
parents' culpability not only in exercising but also in reproducing
these practices through themselves. Going beyond describing and
analysing the educational problem of academic (intellectual)
achievement-oriented education based on aggressive competition,
this book suggests ways to address these issues through
autobiography (using the method of currere to reconstruct one's
subjectivity) and an ethic of care.

We the people at Who HQ bring readers the full story--arguments and
all--of how the United States Constitution came into being. Signed
on September 17, 1787--four years after the American War for
Independence--the Constitution laid out the supreme law of the
United States of America. Today it's easy for us to take this
blueprint of our government for granted. But the
Framers--fifty-five men from almost all of the original 13
states--argued fiercely for many months over what ended up being
only a four-page document. Here is a fascinating behind-the-scenes
look at the hotly fought issues--those between Northern and
Southern States; big states and little ones--and the key players
such as James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, and George Washington
who suffered through countless revisions to make the Constitution
happen.
