While our favorite friend group's world sees some major changes, one thing is as certain as ever: life in the city is always full of surprises.
Dave Allen was an alternative comedian before the phrase existed, an innovator who set the agenda for comedy - and comedians - for more than 30 years. Here is his personal choice of sketches, gags and monologues that wickedly target the foibles of our age. With suit, a stool and a glass of something he was in his element, reflecting laconically on such diverse subjects as sex, the Irish and God, traffic, smoking, the Bible, life, and death. It's a vintage display from a unique raconteur, a man who observed our guilt, weaknesses and doubts and made us laugh at them and at ourselves.
Sick of It follows Karl after he loses his girlfriend and way in life, and finds himself living with his elderly American auntie. As he struggles to deal with the modern world his closest companion is the voice in his head – a grumpy, misanthropic alter ego who takes the form of his doppelgänger. He’s the uncensored version of Karl, who says what he really thinks without the risk of offending others. As Karl attempts to get his life in order and move on, the voice in his head appears to criticise him, offer advice, and dispense witty words of wisdom.
Lonely businessman Edward Lewis (Richard Gere) hires L.A. prostitute Vivian Ward (Julia Roberts) to give him directions when he gets lost, and later to be his escort while he goes wheeling and dealing for a week. Schoolboy Kevin is rescued from his dull suburban life when a gang of dwarves emerge from his wardrobe and carry him off through space and time. When tomboyish Annabel switches bodies with her mother Ellen, she suddenly finds herself responsible for running the household! And Ellen, now in her daughter's body, faces the challenges of school, including a typing test, field hockey practice and more. No two ways about it, Freaky Friday is the funniest day of the year.
Michael Caine leads an all-star ensemble cast in this hilariously sexy comedy that is an outrageously funny look at the love, lies and deceit that take place behind the scenes as a group of ridiculously inept stage actors rehearse a sex farce. Just when they finally get their performances right, things start to go wrong, as petty jealousies and rocky romances lead to a hysterically disastrous Broadway performance you'll never forget. Critically acclaimed, Noises Off proves there's no business like show business for great comedy.
