This book presents a new approach to examining the perceived quality of audiovisual sequences. It uses electroencephalography (EEG) to explain in detail how user quality judgments are formed within a test participant, and what the physiological implications might be when subjects are exposed to lower quality media. The book redefines the experimental paradigms of using EEG in the area of quality assessment so that they better suit the requirements of standard subjective quality testing, and presents experimental protocols and stimuli that have been adjusted accordingly.

This book treats the topic of extending the adaptive filtering theory in the context of massive multichannel systems by taking into account a priori knowledge of the underlying system or signal. The starting point is exploiting the sparseness in acoustic multichannel system in order to solve the non-uniqueness problem with an efficient algorithm for adaptive filtering that does not require any modification of the loudspeaker signals. The book discusses in detail the derivation of general sparse representations of acoustic MIMO systems in signal or system dependent transform domains. Efficient adaptive filtering algorithms in the transform domains are presented and the relation between the signal- and the system-based sparse representations is emphasized. Furthermore, the book presents a novel approach to spatially preprocess the loudspeaker signals in a full-duplex communication system. The idea of the preprocessing is to prevent the echoes from being captured by the microphone array in order to support the AEC system. The preprocessing stage is given as an exemplarily application of a novel unified framework for the synthesis of sound figures. Finally, a multichannel system for the acoustic echo suppression is presented that can be used as a postprocessing stage for removing residual echoes. As first of its kind, it extracts the near-end signal from the microphone signal with a distortionless constraint and without requiring a double-talk detector.

Multi-agent systems have numerous civilian, homeland security, and military applications; however, for all these applications, communication bandwidth, sensing range, power constraints, and stealth requirements preclude centralized command and control. The alternative is distributed coordination, which is more promising in terms of scalability, robustness, and flexibility. Distributed Coordination of Multi-agent Networks introduces problems, models, and issues such as collective periodic motion coordination, collective tracking with a dynamic leader, and containment control with multiple leaders, and explores ideas for their solution. Solving these problems extends the existing application domains of multi-agent networks; for example, collective periodic motion coordination is appropriate for applications involving repetitive movements, collective tracking guarantees tracking of a dynamic leader by multiple followers in the presence of reduced interaction and partial measurements, and containment control enables maneuvering of multiple followers by multiple leaders. The authors models for distributed coordination arise from physical constraints and the complex environments in which multi-agent systems operate; they include Lagrangian models more realistic for mechanical-systems modeling than point models and fractional-order systems which better represent the consequences of environmental complexity.
