The integument (the natural covering of an organism or an organ,
such as its skin, husk, shell, or rind) is the largest organ system
of the human body and is often described as the gatekeeper to every
other system. Its integrity will not only determine the admission
or rejection of many foreign invaders (bacteria, viruses, fungi,
etc.), but also plays a significant role in providing the milieu
for the immune system to do battle with these invaders. It is
typically the first view of an examiner and often yields very
important clues to seemingly non-dermatologic issues. This book
takes us one step further, devoting chapters to the interplay
between integument and heretofore generally unnoted strongly
related psychosocial issues.
In the 21st century, there has been a vast explosion in new
information relating to the art and science of dermatology as well
as fundamental cutaneous biology. Furthermore, this information is
no longer exclusive to the interests of the small, but growing,
specialty of dermatology. Clinicians and scientists from a wide
variety of disciplines have recognized the broad implications of
cutanous lesions in systemic diseases. At present, there is a
multidisciplinary and worldwide interest in the progress of
dermatology. It is difficult for most fully-booked physicians to
spend too much time on searching secondary data for the textbook
mentioned; this kind of literature-searching job is very
time-consuming and remains somewhat incomplete. It should be very
helpful to have textbook-matched handbooks with expanded
information from topic-oriented experts. With these factors in
mind, we have undertaken this series of books which are
specifically oriented toward the advances of dermatology. The scope
of the series is purposely broad, with books ranging from pure
basic science to practical, applied and clinical dermatology. Thus,
while there is something for everyone, all volumes in the series
will ultimately prove to be valuable additions to a dermatologist's
library. The book consists of 22 chapters prepared by authors from
9 countries between five continents. The organization of this
international editorial group has ensured global opinions, avoided
regional bias and racial preferences. The topics covered in this
book are the core of dermatology: from the fundamental changes of
skin biology to newly developed technologies and treatments. What
makes this book quite unique is the inclusion of Chinese medicine,
telemedicine and biologics.
Eczema can be a devastating condition, yet friends, family and even
healthcare professionals dismiss it. How many times do you hear
others say it is only eczema. Yet they are wrong, eczema ruins
lives. Your child is suffering, they are not sleeping, you are not
sleeping. Everywhere you turn there is different advice - it is
food allergy, it is a clothes allergy, use steroids, don't use
steroids. The internet, health professionals and book shops are
full of often contradictory advice of what to do. Why is this book
any different? I am a doctor who has spent my career specialising
in and treating children with eczema. I am also a father of two
children with eczema. As much as I have learned from my
professional career it is only since having my own children that I
have truly understood how overwhelming eczema can be. This book
balances the professional 'ideal' ways of treating eczema against
the practicalities of doing this in real life. There are hints,
tips and practical solutions to everyday situations and answers to
all the commonest questions parents ask me. This book is
purposefully short and pragmatic, so it can be read quickly and the
eczema can treated properly as soon as possible. If you follow the
advice in this book your child will get better and they will stay
better. It may not be easy but you will be amazed how much better
your child can be and how much this will improve your life. Dr

Urticaria is a common condition, affecting up to 20% of the
population at some stage in their lives. It is an important entity
to recognise and differentiate from other similar presenting
conditions and the clinician ideally needs to be aware of the
numerous forms and presentations of urticaria, which varies in
terms of severity, chronicity, extent of organ involvement,
therapeutic options and prognosis. The book contains 18 chapters,
17 of which are focused on a specific area of importance in this
disease. After introducing the topic and discussing the
epidemiology of urticaria, the book then comprehensively examines
acute urticaria, the various forms of inducible urticaria,
urticarial vasculitis, and chronic spontaneous urticaria, a
relatively novel term that encompasses chronic autoimmune urticaria
and chronic idiopathic urticaria. There is a chapter dedicated to
urticaria in children as well as a chapter describing the use of
basophil activation tests in chronic urticaria. The final three
chapters are devoted to the treatment of urticaria; first line
therapies, the role and options of immunosuppression, and the
emerging use of omalizumab. The chapters have been written by
clinicians and experts in the area from various renowned
institutions with the aim of providing a comprehensive yet
practical guide to general physicians, dermatologists, clinical
immunologists, allergists, and emergency physicians who encounter
the problem of urticaria in their practice.
Skin, which is in continuous evolution throughout our lifetime,
suffers changes with age and may develop malignancies. The part of
the skin most involved in its bio-mechanical functions is the
dermis. Topics discussed in this compilation include the cellular
and histological changes in dermis aging; non-invasive methods in
the study of the dermal structure and composition; and dermal and
epidermal interaction.

Skin health has taken center stage for health care practitioners
and patients alike. Not only has skin cancer quickly become the
number one form of cancer in the United States, with 3.5 million
cancers diagnosed in over 2 million patients annually, but concerns
about sun protection and healthy aging have dominated both public
media and individual patient concerns. As the largest and most
visible organ, the skin displays all evidence of health and
vitality, both real and perceived, thereby conferring a tremendous
amount of psychological burden on those afflicted with cutaneous
ailments. Clinicians are thus charged with the important task of
caring for the whole person, mentally as well as physically, to
achieve therapeutic success. Integrative Dermatology is the first
comprehensive text in this growing field which strives to examine
and combine best practices from both traditional medicine as well
as complementary and alternative healing modalities such as: diet,
supplements, and mind-body medicine. The book presents key concepts
for synthesizing the best, comprehensive care plan for each
individualized and contextualized dermatology patient.
This book is truly a classic, beloved by plastic surgeons
throughout the world. Its strength lies in its simple, elegant
approach to solving common reconstructive problems encountered by
plastic surgeons at all levels of training. Its appeal transcends
specialty interests, with aesthetic and reconstructive surgeons
alike finding this book to be an invaluable resource for daily
practice. Its comprehensive coverage makes it an essential addition
to any surgeon's library. Totally revised and updated with color
throughout, this new edition has been totally revised and updated
with over 150 additional pages, two new chapters, and numerous new
cases, flaps, and problems. Additionally, there are color
illustrations, summary tables highlighting the best flaps for
various clinical situations, annotated bibliographies, and much,
much more. Throughout these pages, the reader benefits from Dr.
Jackson's enormous experience and wisdom as he makes note of
special tips, critical maneuvers, and important principles that
warrant emphasis. Each flap is accompanied by a description of
potential problems, and each anatomic area for reconstruction ends
with a technique of choice so that the reader can understand the
decision-making process that is involved in flap selection. The
book begins with a chapter on basic principles, which reviews the
important oncologic concerns that must precede any
reconstructive-surgery procedure. Principles of tissue movement and
flap design are accompanied by drawings that aid the reader in
planning. The next seven chapters address each anatomic region.
Alternate methods for closing defects in each region are presented.
Both simple and complex solutions are detailed. Each reconstructive
option is presented in great detail with operative photos as well
as beautiful illustrations to depict flap design, elevation, and
closure, and to more clearly explicate complex flap reconstructions
for difficult problems. Common mistakes and the limitations of each
flap are clearly delineated. Chapters on each anatomic region
conclude with new summary tables that help the reader quickly
identify the best reconstructive options for specific problems. Two
Totally New Chapters The final two chapters are new to this
edition-Tissue Expansion and Problems and Complication. The chapter
on tissue expansion fully details the advantages to be gained from
tissue expansion and the applications in each area of the head and
neck when local flaps are planned. The Problems and Complications
chapter covers common problems encountered in head and neck
reconstruction as well as avoidance and treatment of complications
should they occur. It concludes with a section on tricks and
innovations, which discusses diverse topics such as the use of
scarlet red for wound healing, the aesthetic repair of torn
earlobes, and the repair of cocaine-induced palatal fistula. There
is clearly a wealth of information and much to be learned and
applied by surgeons at all levels of expertise.

The aim of this 7-chapter, single-author textbook is to overview
and illustrate pathological features of skin infections caused by
bacteria, fungi, viruses, protozoa, helminth and arthropods with a
total of 361 coloured figures. Histological features based on
hematoxylin and eosin staining and gross appearance comprise the
major part of the illustrations. Immunostaining using the indirect
immunoperoxidase or amino acid polymer method and non-isotopic in
situ hybridisation technique were employed when necessary. The
indirect immunoperoxidase method using 1:500 to 1:1,000 diluted
patients' serum as a primary antibody was also applied to localize
pathogens within the lesion fixed in 10-20% formalin and embedded
in paraffin. Papanicolaou- or Giemsa-stained cytology evaluation,
as well as electron microscopic analysis and polymerase chain
reaction (PCR), were also performed upon request. The prompt and
precise diagnosis of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases,
nosocomial infections and sexually transmitted infections has an
important socio-public impact for the prevention of unnecessary
transmission of micro-organisms. The skin may function as a mirror
of internal organs. The author, as a diagnostic pathologist,
sincerely hopes that this textbook helps pathologists,
dermatologists and other clinicians make an appropriate diagnosis
of skin infections. He strongly believes that the proper diagnosis
may lead patients to proper treatment and cure, and may finally
contribute to human society by preventing infectious disorders.

In the era in which human beings began seeking aesthesis, numerous
options for scar treatments have been invented. Not all, but almost
all of the useful treatment options are described in this book,
along with the latest discoveries of scar pathogenesis.
Combinations of these treatment options and the latest options of
laser treatments are described with the help of a new scar
classification system. This new scar classification system is based
not only on the morphology and natural behaviour of scars, but also
on the responses of scars to laser treatments. It is the editor's
hope that this book will illuminate the direction of future scar
treatment research and provide a greater understanding of scar
pathogenesis as well as practical guidance to more successful scar
treatments.
In humans, actinic keratosis is the most frequent lesion of the
skin initiating a cascade of tumors ending with the squamous cell
carcinoma, actinic type. This health problem is increasing
worldwide in incidence in the past decades. It is most prevalent in
fair-skinned individuals who expose their skin to ultraviolet light
from sunshine and artificial sources. The present book provides
essential up-to-date information about this common condition. It is
presented in a convenient and practical format. This book explains
new developments in the understanding of the skin cancer cascade
initiated in the field photocarcinogenesis giving rise to actinic
keratosis at the source of invasive actinic squamous cell carcinoma
and its metastases. Quandaries about nosology, clinical diagnosis,
histopathologic assessment, molecular biology advances and
management are addressed. This book assembles important new
scientific information on all aspects about the skin cancer cascade
induced by the environment. It covers the clinical features and
epidemiology to support prevention and therapy. Early diagnosis and
treatment are essential in the populations at risk. This actinic
keratosis survey will be an invaluable reference for all clinical
dermatologists and any other physicians and researchers interested
in skin cancerology covering the spectrum of chronically
sun-exposed skin. The thousand and one facets of actinic keratosis
was written to fit the clinical needs of very busy dermatologists,
oncologists, skin investigators, pharmacologists, physician
assistants and any practitioner caring for patients particularly
exposed to a sunny environment.
There hasn't been a book concerning "Microscopically Controlled
Surgery" published and it is vital to publish a book that details
all the different terms and methodology used in microscopically
controlled surgery. The goal is to create a practical, concise and
simple explanation of 3D-histology with workflows and detailed
illustrative material for dermatologists. It is therefore designed
to be a goal-oriented manual rather than an exhaustive reference
work. It will provide the essential information for all working
with patients undergoing this group of treatments.
Alopecia areata (AA) is a common cause of reversible hair loss
afflicting approximately 1-2% of the general population. It
commonly presents itself as round patches of hair loss. The
aetiology of AA is unknown but is characterised by hair cycle
dysfunction and the presence of peribulbar and perifollicular
mononuclear cell infiltrates. In this book, the authors present
current research in the study of the causes, diagnosis and
treatment of alopecia. Topics include radiation treatment and
alopecia; the psychosocial aspects in alopecia areata; the
classification, pathogenesis and treatment in alopecia areata and
its genetic basis.
