A unique collection of concise but detailed information on 10,000
animals, plants, fungi and algae of the British Isles. Every
species with an English common name is included. The compendium is
in two parts. The first, smaller part, looks at various terms that
people interested in natural history may come across. The second
provides information on individual species or species groups, with
entries on those with English (common) names, as well as selected
families, orders, classes, etc. In the case of marine organisms,
entries are given for intertidal and subtidal invertebrate species,
and generally speaking for fish species that might be observed
inshore. Indication is often given on distribution as well as
whether a species is common, scarce or something in between. For
some species a note is made of population size and trends. Comments
are made where appropriate on etymology, both of the English name
and the binomial. No other natural history dictionary or cognate
publication relating to the British Isles is as comprehensive in
taxonomic cover.

The Arab uprisings that swept the Middle East and North Africa in
the period from 2011- 2012 left an indelible mark on the
socio-political landscape of the region. But that mark was not
consistent across the region: while some countries underwent
dramatic popular social and political changes, others teetered on
the brink, or were left with the status quo intact. Street
revolutions toppled despotic regimes in Tunisia, Libya, and
momentarily in Egypt, while mounting serious challenges to
authoritarian regimes in Syria and Yemen. Algeria's entrenched
bureaucratic-cum-military authoritarian system proved resilient
until the recent events of early 2019 which forced the resignation
of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika before the end of his term on 28
April 2019. As in Algeria, protestors in Sudan succeeded, after
months of demonstrations, in overthrowing the government of Omar
al-Bashir. Several Arab monarchies still appear stable and have
managed to weather the tempest of the Arab revolutions, albeit not
without fissures showing in the edifice of their states,
accompanied by some minor constitutional changes. Where Tunisians,
Egyptians, Yemenis, Syrians, and Libyans demanded regime changes in
their political systems, protesters in the Arab monarchies have
called on the kings and emirs to reform their political system from
the top down, indicating the sizeable monarchical advantage.
Historical Dictionary of the Arab Uprisings contains a chronology,
an introduction, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary
section has over 300 cross-referenced entries on the terms, persons
and events that shaped the Arab Spring uprisings. This book is an
excellent resource for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to
know more about the Arab Uprisings.
Hailed by book reviewers as a "masterpiece," "gorgeous and
fascinating," and "sheer pleasure," Home Ground: Language for an
American Landscape was published in fall 2006 in hardcover. It was
met with outstanding reviews and strong sales, going into three
printings. A language-lover's dream, this visionary reference
revitalized a descriptive language for the American landscape by
combining geography, literature, and folklore in one volume. This
is a totally redesigned, near-pocket-sized field guide edition of
the best-selling hardcover. Home Ground brings together 45 poets
and writers to create more than 850 original definitions for words
that describe our lands and waters. The writers draw from careful
research and their own distinctive stylistic, personal, and
regional diversity to portray in bright, precise prose the striking
complexity of the landscapes we inhabit. Includes an introductory
essay by Barry Lopez. At the heart of the book is a community of
writers in service to their country, emphasizing a language
suggesting the vastness and mystery that lie beyond our everyday
words.
Specially chosen for their power to evoke German life and culture,

While our physical surroundings fashion our identities, we, in
turn, fashion the natural elements in which or with which we live.
This complex interaction between the human and the non-human
already resonated in Shakespeare's plays and poems. As details of
the early modern supra- and infra-celestial landscape feature in
his works, this dictionary brings to the fore Shakespeare's
responsiveness to and acute perception of his 'environment' and it
covers the most significant uses of words related to this concept.
In doing so, it also examines the epistemological changes that were
taking place at the turn of the 17th century in a society which
increasingly tried to master nature and its elements. For this
reason, the intersections between the natural and the supernatural
receive special emphasis. All in all, this dictionary offers a wide
variety of resources that takes stock of the 'green criticism' that
recently emerged in Shakespeare studies and provides a clear and
complete overview of the idea, imagery and language of environment
in the canon.
