Frederick William Danker, a world-renowned scholar of New Testament Greek, is widely acclaimed for his 2000 revision of Walter Bauer's "A Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament and Other Early Christian Literature. "With more than a quarter of a million copies in print, it is considered the finest dictionary of its kind. Danker's "Concise Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament "will prove to be similarly invaluable to ministers, seminarians, translators, and students of biblical Greek. Unlike other lexica of the Greek New Testament, which give only brief glosses for headwords, "The Concise Greek-English Lexicon "offers extended definitions or explanations in idiomatic English for all Greek terms. Each entry includes basic etymological information, short renderings, information on usage, and plentiful biblical references. Greek terms that could have different English definitions, depending on context, are thoughtfully keyed to the appropriate passages. An overarching aim of "The Concise Greek-English Lexicon "is to assist the reader in recognizing the broad linguistic and cultural context for New Testament usage of words. "The Concise Greek-English Lexicon "retains all the acclaimed features of "A Greek-English Lexicon "in a succinct and affordable handbook, perfect for specialists and nonspecialists alike.
Esperanto, the most widely-spoken constructed international auxiliary language, was the creation of Ludwik Lejzer Zamenhof, who first published it in 1887. Today Esperanto is estimated to have between 100,000 and 2,000,000 speakers worldwide. The most complete Esperanto dictionary is the "Plena Ilustrita Vortaro," which is available both online and in printed format; but since the PIV is entirely in Esperanto, the need for a modern Esperanto-to-English dictionary remains keen for many Esperantists. Paul Denisowski's "Esperanto-English Dictionary" can help fill a part of that need, on the basis of its sheer size alone, with more than 52,000 headwords. This extensive dictionary was compiled both from existing glossaries and from glossaries prepared by Denisowski himself, and it contains many words not usually found in smaller dictionaries, including an abundance of scientific terms, especially from the fields of medicine and mathematics. It is hoped that the publication of this dictionary will assist a new generation of Esperanto learners in their enjoyment of this unique language. -- Esperanto, la plej vaste parolata internacia planlingvo, estis la krea o de Ludwik Lejzer Zamenhof, kiu unue publikigis in en 1887. How did a single genre of text have the power to standardise the English language across time and region, rival the Bible in notions of authority, and challenge our understanding of objectivity, prescription, and description? Since the first monolingual dictionary appeared in 1604, the genre has sparked evolution, innovation, devotion, plagiarism, and controversy. This comprehensive volume presents an overview of essential issues pertaining to dictionary style and content and a fresh narrative of the development of English dictionaries throughout the centuries. Essays on the regional and global nature of English lexicography (dictionary making) explore its power in standardising varieties of English and defining nations seeking independence from the British Empire: from Canada to the Caribbean. Leading scholars and lexicographers historically contextualise an array of dictionaries and pose urgent theoretical and methodological questions relating to their role as tools of standardisation, prestige, power, education, literacy, and national identity.
There is no single Asian language. But plenty of vogue words from this booming continent are entering English. Did you know there is a flower named after former dictator Kim Jong-il? The Chinese have a word shengnu, literally leftover for the new phenomenon of unmarried women over thirty. Can you tell your jeepney from your jilbab, or yakuza from the yellowshirts? These are just some of the hundreds of words that illuminate little corners of life and culture in a pan-Asian selection of keywords from the zeitgeist."
