From the beginning, the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary was
intended to be an abridgement of the full Oxford English
Dictionary. The first editor, William Little, was appointed in
1902. He worked on it until his death in 1922, after which the
dictionary was completed by H. W. Fowler, Jessie Coulson, and C. T.
Onions. The First Edition was published in 1933, in two volumes.
The Second Edition, published in 1936, contained about 3,000
revisions and additions. The Third Edition (1944) contained an
appendix of addenda and corrigenda, and this edition was reprinted
several times with corrections and additions, the most significant
being in 1973, with enlarged addenda (now running to over 70 pages)
and a major revision of all the etymologies. The New Shorter was
prepared under the editorship of Lesley Brown 1980-1993. It was the
first complete revision of the dictionary, being in fact not so
much an overhaul of the existing text as a reabridgement of the OED
and its Supplements. The Fifth Edition was published in 2002, and
reverted to the name Shorter Oxford English Dictionary to emphasize
the link between this 2-volume dictionary and the original
20-volume OED. The Sixth Edition of the Shorter Oxford English
Dictionary provides a complete update of this unique reference
work. Based on the 20-volume Oxford English Dictionary, the Shorter
Oxford English Dictionary contains an incredible one-third of the
coverage of the Oxford English Dictionary, is just one-tenth of the
size, and includes all words in current English from 1700 to the
present day, plus the vocabulary of Shakespeare, the Bible and
other major works in English from before 1700. The new edition,
with a new introductory essay by language expert David Crystal on
the History of English, includes 2,500 new words and senses, plus
thousands of antedatings of existing words, drawing on the huge
ongoing research project for the Oxford English Dictionary and the
wealth of information on language in use provided by the Oxford
English Corpus. In addition, the work includes many new quotations
from recent authors, a refreshed design, and a complete review of
spelling forms and defining vocabulary, making it the most
authoritative reference work available for both modern and
historical English. For scholars and everyone with a serious
interest in the English language, the Shorter Oxford English
Dictionary is an unrivalled resource, providing a unique
description of the historical development of the language together
with excellent coverage of current English. The Sixth Edition
showcases the best of the traditional strengths of the Shorter
Oxford English Dictionary, while bringing it up to date in its
scholarship and research, in the design and layout, and in its
treatment of the changing face of English.

The perfect stocking filler for anyone who imagines themselves
flying a spitfire . . . Drop your visiting cards, put aside your
beer-lever, stop being a half-pint hero and discover the gloriously
funny slang which was part of everyday life in two world wars.
Passion-killers: Airwomen's service knickers, whether twilights
(the lighter, summer-weight variety) or black-outs (the navy-blue
winter-weights). A wise directive has purposely made them as
unromantic in colour and in design as a wise directive could
imagine. Thanks to the work of Eric Partridge in 1945, the
hilarious slang of the Royal Air Force during the first two World
Wars has been preserved for generations to come. While some phrases
like 'chocks away!' have lasted to this day, others deserve to be
rediscovered . . . Beer-lever: From pub-bars, meaning the
'Joystick' of an aircraft. Canteen cowboy: A ladies' man. Half-pint
hero: A boaster. One who exemplifies the virtue of Dutch courage
without having the trouble of going into action. Tin fish: A
torpedo. Umbrella man: A parachutist. Visiting-card: A bomb. Wheels
down: Get ready - especially to leave a bus, tram, train. From
lowering the wheels, preparatory to landing. Whistled: In a state
of intoxication wherein one tends to whistle cheerfully and perhaps
discordantly. The Dictionary of RAF Slang is a funny and
fascinating insight into the lives of our RAF heroes, in a time
gone by.

It's time to empower yourself and just say no to giving birth
passively. This is the book that has revolutionized childbirth,
turning birthing mothers from subdued and passive "patients" to
active and empowered owners of their childbirth experience. Janet
Balaskas started a movement of women who refused to give birth
lying down and she has been teaching women about "active birth"
ever since. She emphasizes the importance of movement during labor,
the wide range of options and positions for delivery itself, and
the many natural alternatives to heavy sedation and other medical
interventions. Her book is eminently useful whether you are
planning to give birth in a hospital, a free-standing birth center,
or at home. If such options as water birth or hypno-birthing are
appealing to you, this is an essential book; at the same time, it
is non-judgmental and encourages you to give birth in whatever
manner and position you see fit. It covers: Exercises for
pregnancy, to prepare you optimally for childbirth Massage and yoga
during labor Labor and birthing positions that maximize your
comfort and encourage efficient contractions Essential tips for
birth partners, spouses, doulas, and other attendants Relaxation
and recovery exercises, for the postpartum period Janet Balaskas
shows you how to prepare for and experience a truly natural,
joyful, and empowering birth.
Here the attempt is made to establish how and to what extent
lexical collocations are listed in one-language dictionaries for
advanced learners of English. Various representatives of this type
of dictionary are analyzed and compared on the basis of a corpus of

The volume represents the first attempt of its kind to assemble all
proper names covered by legal norms in the Federal Republic and
subject them to a linguistic study of their specific features.
Special reference is made to product and street names, which have
hitherto been neglected in onomastic studies. The analysis of legal
norms not only advances the onomastic theory of names, it also
provides the basis for a new model of legal nomenclature. Finally,
the models also provide certain areas of the law of names with the
linguistic foundations hitherto lacking.
