Quick Response - Managing the Supply Chain to Meet Consumer Demand (Hardcover): B. Lowson Quick Response - Managing the Supply Chain to Meet Consumer Demand (Hardcover)
B. Lowson
R2,811 R1,734 Discovery Miles 17 340 Save R1,077 (38%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The gap between demand for consumer goods and their efficient supply is greater now than at any other time, and is widening as consumers’ wants become less predictable, and suppliers struggle to meet them. Quick Response (QR) is both a management paradigm and a methodology that allows supply systems to react quickly to changes while improving their performance. QR aims to help organize a business in the face of problems associated with the vast array of goods and services now to be found in consumer markets. It is particularly relevant to the Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) and Fashion industries. QR works by compressing the time between product or service design concept and appearance on the retail shelf. It then takes advantage of such recent technologies as Point of Sale (PoS) tracking and Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) to constantly up-date estimates of true consumer demand, and then places intelligent re-orders for goods with flexible manufacturers and their suppliers. One of the features of this book is the demonstration that the range of industries able to benefit from the application of QR methodologies is extremely wide. However, this apparent universality comes with a strong ‘health warning’. By placing QR in a broad framework of management thinking, the book allows comparison with other paradigms and their off-shoots — partnerships and alliances, measurement and benchmarking, Information Systems Technology strategies, Total Quality Management, and change management. Belief systems such as World Class Manufacturing, Lean Production, Agile Manufacturing, Virtual Organization, Time-Based Competition, Supply Chain Management (SCM) and chaos theory, are also reviewed and contrasted. The book then quantifies the performance benefits that accrue from the application of QR using examples from the US and European industries as well as computer simulation. Lessons are also drawn from a wide variety of SMEs (Small and Medium sized Enterprises) who are using QR as a strategic tool, as well as those who have not yet adopted it. For the latter, there are recommendations for implementing QR. The future management and research directions required for full exploitation of QR are also explored in a separate section. The most important aspect of this book is that it concentrates on the practical, hands-on management of a supply pipeline as opposed to the generalized theories of Supply Chain Management.

R4,162 Discovery Miles 41 620 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

70 per cent of the planet is covered by water, and 90 per cent of global economic trade is transported by sea. The world's seas and oceans are big business. Based on gross marine product, the ocean can be considered the world's seventh-largest economy, with the total global value of the Blue Economy predicted to rise to $3 trillion by 2030. Grounded in detailed market research, and brought to life through over 250 meticulously researched case studies, Technology and the Blue Economy presents a compelling overview of an inspiring and innovative sector that includes offshore renewable energy, ports and harbours, shipping, maritime surveillance, cyber security, aquaculture and ocean conservation. It tackles questions like these: * With Earth observation satellites providing unprecedented levels of data about the ocean, can machine learning capabilities develop at pace to make sense of all this new information? * How can ships protect themselves when one shipping firm alone records 50,000 daily attempts to breach its cyber security systems? * With floating wind farms now pushing further out to sea to convert natural energy, what role do robots have in managing essential maintenance in these more remote environments? * When passenger ferries are already sailing themselves and self-docking in port without human intervention, are we entering an age where human error is eradicated? * With fish farming predicted to account for 62 per cent of all the seafood consumed globally by 2030, how can 3D imaging cameras and net-cleaning robots help to stop mass deaths of fish that can run into millions in a single incident? * In the age of smartphone ubiquity, how important a role might social media and citizen science play in ocean conservation? * With luxury cruise ships now marketing themselves as 'smart, connected cities', crunching passenger data in real-time, do they now provide the gold standard of customer experience within the tourist industry? * Is optical scanning technology the solution to countering slavery at sea, a real concern in the south-east Asian fishing industry? * Can satellite-enabled tracking and autonomous clean-up systems help to counter one of the greatest conservation issues of the day - the fight against ocean plastic pollution? Technology and the Blue Economy explores how innovators can develop the right business models to capitalize on growth opportunities, and analyses the critical success factors for emerging technologies.

Shopper Behavior at the Point of Purchase - Drivers of In-Store Decision-Making and Determinants of Post-Decision Satisfaction in a High-Involvement Product Choice (Hardcover, New edition)
Toni Schmidt
R1,150 Discovery Miles 11 500 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores two central aspects of shopper behavior at the POP: decision-making itself and how it is affected by in-store and out-of-store factors, with a focus on the role of in-store attention, post-decision choice satisfaction and its determinants. It empirically researches these aspects using data gathered in an eye-tracking field experiment. These data allow for a precise analysis of attention at the POP, as well as of many other important variables of in-store decision-making. Overall, the results show that retailers have less influence on in-store decision-making than manufacturers, despite having control over the POP, as out-of-store factors have a stronger impact on in-store decision-making than in-store factors.

Riccardo Manzini
R5,201 Discovery Miles 52 010 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

With increased globalization and offshore sourcing, global supply chain management" "is becoming an important issue for many businesses as it involves a company's worldwide interests and suppliers rather than simply a local or national orientation. The storage systems significantly affect the level of quality of products, the customer s service level, and the global logistic cost. The mission of warehousing systems design, control and optimization is to effectively ship products in the right place, at the right time, and in the right quantity (i.e. in any configuration) without any damages or alterations, and minimizing costs.

"Warehousing in the Global Supply Chain" presents and discusses a set of models, tools and real applications, including a few case studies rarely presented with a sufficient detail by other literature, to illustrate the main challenges in warehousing activities. This includes allwarehouse operations (from receiving to shipping), problems andissues (e.g. storage allocation, assignment, layout, vehicle routing) for industrial andservice systems as parts of global supply chains.

Advanced and effective solving methods are also illustrated and the discussed case studies help the reader to quickly apply the proposed models and techniques/algorithms. "Warehousing in the Global Supply Chain" is useful to managers and practitioners of industry and service sectors for the determination and modeling of the critical issues concerning warehousing systems planning and design. It is a valuable source of information for engineering students, doctoral and post-doctoral students, and researchers of academic institutions who are searching for advanced modeling approaches and solving techniques to complex logistic decision making problems.

Automation in Warehouse Development (Paperback, 2012 ed.): Roelof Hamberg, Jacques Verriet Automation in Warehouse Development (Paperback, 2012 ed.)
Roelof Hamberg, Jacques Verriet
R2,869 Discovery Miles 28 690 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The warehouses of the future will come in a variety of forms, but with a few common ingredients. Firstly, human operational handling of items in warehouses is increasingly being replaced by automated item handling. Extended warehouse automation counteracts the scarcity of human operators and supports the quality of picking processes. Secondly, the development of models to simulate and analyse warehouse designs and their components facilitates the challenging task of developing warehouses that take into account each customer's individual requirements and logistic processes. Automation in Warehouse Development addresses both types of automation from the innovative perspective of applied science. In particular, it describes the outcomes of the Falcon project, a joint endeavour by a consortium of industrial and academic partners. The results include a model-based approach to automate warehouse control design, analysis models for warehouse design, concepts for robotic item handling and computer vision, and autonomous transport in warehouses. Automation in Warehouse Development is targeted at both academic researchers and industrial practitioners. It provides state-of-the art research on warehouse automation and model-based warehouse design. These topics have been addressed from a systems engineering perspective by researchers from different disciplines including software, control, and mechanical engineering, with a clear focus on the industrial applications of their research.

Humanitarian Logistics - Cross-Sector Cooperation in Disaster Relief Management (Paperback, 2012 ed.): Alessandra Cozzolino Humanitarian Logistics - Cross-Sector Cooperation in Disaster Relief Management (Paperback, 2012 ed.)
Alessandra Cozzolino
R1,408 Discovery Miles 14 080 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Humanitarian logistics has received increasing interest both from logistics academics and practitioners as a result of the dramatic increase in both natural and man-made disasters. The impact on affected populations can be all the more limited as much as the logistics operations in response to emergencies are effective and efficient. Collaboration with various relevant actors involving in the emergency resolution can help to reduce costs, increase speed, and improve the leanness/agility level in the humanitarian supply chain, and viceversa, poor coordination among them is cited as an explanation for performance gaps. As disasters become increasingly complex better collaboration not only with government agencies, military units, humanitarian organizations, but also through partnerships with private business becomes more and more important. However, such partnerships are not easy as organizations in the two sectors are extremely different. The main aim of this study is exploring more in depth the partnership between profit and non-profit in emergency relief operations, with a specific attention to the cross-learning potential for both the logistics service provider (profit) and the humanitarian organization (non-profit).
