Qualitative Theory of Dynamical Systems, Tools and Applications for Economic Modelling - Lectures Given at the COST Training... Qualitative Theory of Dynamical Systems, Tools and Applications for Economic Modelling - Lectures Given at the COST Training School on New Economic Complex Geography at Urbino, Italy, 17-19 September 2015 (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Gian-Italo Bischi, Anastasiia Panchuk, Davide Radi
R4,739 Discovery Miles 47 390 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The book presents the lectures delivered during a short course held at Urbino University in summer 2015 on qualitative theory of dynamical systems, included in the activities of the COST Action IS1104 "The EU in the new economic complex geography: models, tools and policy evaluation". It provides a basic introduction to dynamical systems and optimal control both in continuous and discrete time, as well as some numerical methods and applications in economic modelling. Economic and social systems are intrinsically dynamic, characterized by interdependence, nonlinearity and complexity, and these features can only be approached using a qualitative analysis based on the study of invariant sets (equilibrium points, limit cycles and more complex attractors, together with the boundaries of their basins of attraction), which requires a trade-off between analytical, geometrical and numerical methods. Even though the early steps of the qualitative theory of dynamical systems have been in continuous time models, in economic and social modelling discrete time is often used to describe event-driven (often decision-driven) evolving systems. The book is written for Ph.D. and master's students, post-doctoral fellows, and researchers in economics or sociology, and it only assumes a basic knowledge of calculus. However it also suggests some more advanced topics.

Defining the Spatial Scale in Modern Regional Analysis - New Challenges from Data at Local Level (Hardcover, 2012 ed.): Esteban... Defining the Spatial Scale in Modern Regional Analysis - New Challenges from Data at Local Level (Hardcover, 2012 ed.)
Esteban Fernandez Vazquez, Fernando Rubiera Morollon
R4,052 Discovery Miles 40 520 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book explores different approaches to defining the concept of region depending on the specific question that needs to be answered. While the typical administrative spatial data division fits certain research questions well, in many cases, defining regions in a different way is fundamental in order to obtain significant empirical evidence. The book is divided into three parts: The first part is dedicated to a methodological discussion of the concept of region and the different potential approaches from different perspectives. The problem of having sufficient information to define different regional units is always present. This justifies the second part of the book, which focuses on the techniques of ecological inference applied to estimating disaggregated data from observable aggregates. Finally, the book closes by presenting several applications that are in line with the functional areas definition in regional analysis.

The Sociology of Financial Markets (Hardcover, New): Karin Knorr Cetina, Alex Preda The Sociology of Financial Markets (Hardcover, New)
Karin Knorr Cetina, Alex Preda
R5,389 Discovery Miles 53 890 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Financial markets have often been seen by economists as efficient mechanisms that fulfill vital functions within economies. But do financial markets really operate in such a straightforward manner? The Sociology of Financial Markets approaches financial markets from a sociological perspective. It seeks to provide an adequate sociological conceptualization of financial markets, and examine who the actors within them are, how they operate within which networks, and under which cognitive and cultural assumptions. Patterns of trading, trading room coordination, cognition and emotions, and global interaction are studied to help us better understand how markets work and the types of reasoning underlying these institutions. Financial markets also have a structural impact on the governance of social and economic institutions. Until now, sociologists have examined issues of governance mostly with respect to the legal framework of financial transactions. Contributions in this book highlight the ways in which financial markets shape the inner working and structure of corporations and their governance. Finally, the book seeks to investigate the symbolic aspects of financial markets. Financial markets affect not only economic and social structures but also societal cultural images and frameworks of meaning. Barbara Czarniawska demonstrates how representations of gender relationships are a case in point. Arguing that financial markets are not simply neutral with respect to questions of gender but enhance certain images and interpretations of men and women. Addressing many important topics from a sociological perspective for the first time, this book will be key reading for academics, researchers, and advanced students of financial markets in Business, Management, Economics, Finance and Sociology.

Inequality, Globalization, and World Politics (Hardcover): Andrew Hurrell, Ngaire Woods Inequality, Globalization, and World Politics (Hardcover)
Andrew Hurrell, Ngaire Woods
R4,480 Discovery Miles 44 800 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Inequality is becoming an urgent issue of world politics at the end of the twentieth century. Globalization is not only exacerbating the gap between rich and poor in the world but is also further dividing those states and peoples that have political power and influence from those without. While the powerful shape more `global' rules and norms about investment, military security, environmental and social policy and the like, the less powerful are becoming `rule-takers', often of rules or norms they cannot or will not enforce. The consequences for world politics are profound. The evidence presented in Inequality, Globalization, and World Politics suggests that globalization is creating sharper, more urgent problems for states and international institutions to deal with. Yet at the same time, investigations into eight core areas of world politics suggest that growing inequality is reducing the capacity of governments and existing international organizations to manage these problems effectively. The eight areas surveyed include: international order, international law, welfare and social policy, global justice, regionalism and multilateralism, environmental protection, gender equality, military power, and security.

Geography, Institutions and Regional Economic Performance (Hardcover, 2013 ed.): Riccardo Crescenzi, Marco Percoco Geography, Institutions and Regional Economic Performance (Hardcover, 2013 ed.)
Riccardo Crescenzi, Marco Percoco
R4,628 R3,557 Discovery Miles 35 570 Save R1,071 (23%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The book aims to present "traditional features" of regional science (as geographical concepts and institutions), as well as relatively new topics such as innovation and agglomeration economies. In particular it demonstrates that, contrary to what has been argued by recent economics literature, both geography and institutions (or culture) are relevant for local development. In fact, these phenomena, along with the movement of goods and workers, are among the main reasons for persisting development differentials. These intriguing relationships are at the heart of the analysis presented in this book and form the conceptual basis for a promising institutional approach to economic geography.

Renewable Energy Clusters - Recurring Barriers to Cluster Development in Eleven Countries (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Gudrun... Renewable Energy Clusters - Recurring Barriers to Cluster Development in Eleven Countries (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Gudrun Jaegersberg, Jenny Ure
R3,154 Discovery Miles 31 540 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Taking eleven countries in Europe, Canada, South Africa, America, Latin America and Australia, this book discusses recurring barriers to cluster development in the renewable energy sector. The authors look at the real-world dynamics and tensions between stakeholders on the ground, with a particular focus on the relationships between SMEs and other actors. This trans-regional study is unique in its scale and scope, drawing on a decade of field research to show how by learning from the successes and failures of other clusters, costs and risk can be reduced. The book fills a significant gap in the literature for policymakers, managers and economic developers in a key market.

An Introduction to Place-Based Development Economics and Policy (Hardcover, 2015 ed.): Gilberto Seravalli An Introduction to Place-Based Development Economics and Policy (Hardcover, 2015 ed.)
Gilberto Seravalli
R2,790 R1,795 Discovery Miles 17 950 Save R995 (36%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book introduces the reader to local development economics and policy, with a special focus on the place-based paradigm that covers its justification, its difficulties and the types of public intervention that it suggests. The starting point for the analysis is that economic development in lagging places is not to be expected as the result of a mechanism of automatic convergence between backward and advanced regions and that, therefore, the most appropriate development policy is not to maximize competition among all agents in all sectors and places. The failure of the Washington Consensus is examined, and the two competing positions to have emerged from this failure - spatially blind interventions and place-based policies - are contrasted. The main shortcoming of spatially blind policies, namely that immobile resources that could trigger or support a development process often remain untapped or "trapped", is emphasized. The limitations of the "big push" state intervention and wage flexibility solutions to this trap are analyzed and the merits of place-based policies that support intervention and can deal with uncertainty, risk and conflict are discussed.

G.Cornelis van Kooten
R4,105 Discovery Miles 41 050 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This volume enables readers to understand the complexity associated with climate change policy and the science behind it. For example, the author describes the criticism and defense of the widely known hockey stick temperature graph derived from combining instrumental data and proxy temperature indications using tree ring, ice core and other paleoclimatic data.

Readers will also learn that global warming cannot easily be avoided by reducing CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions in rich countries. Not only is emissions reduction extremely difficult in rich countries, but demands such as the UN mandate to improve the lives of the poorest global citizens cannot be satisfied without significantly increasing global energy use, and CO2 emissions. Therefore, the author asserts that climate engineering and adaptation are preferable to mitigation, particularly since the science is less than adequate for making firm statements about the Earth s future climate.Readers will also learn that global warming cannot easily be avoided by reducing CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions in rich countries. Rural Electrification - Strategies for Distributed Generation (Hardcover, 2011 Ed.): Hisham Zerriffi Rural Electrification - Strategies for Distributed Generation (Hardcover, 2011 Ed.)
Hisham Zerriffi
R4,026 Discovery Miles 40 260 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

For those in developed nations, suddenly being without electricity is a disaster: power cuts have us fretting over the food stored in the freezer, and even a few hours without lights, televisions, or air conditioning is an ordeal. However, for an estimated 1.6 billion people worldwide, the absence of electricity is their daily experience. An untold number of others live with electricity that is erratic and of poor quality. How can electric power be brought into their lives when the centralized utility models that have evolved in developed nations are not an economically viable option? Poor, rural communities in developing nations cannot simply be plugged in to a grid.

Small-scale Distributed Generation (DG), ranging from individual solar home systems to village level grids run off diesel generators, could provide the answer, and this book compares around 20 DG enterprises and projects in Brazil, Cambodia and China, each of which is considered to be a "business model" for distributed rural electrification. While large, centralized power projects often rely on big subsidies, this study shows that privately run and localized solutions can be both self-sustaining and replicable. Its three sections provide a general introduction to the issue of electrification and rural development, set out the details of the case studies and compare the models involved, and discuss the important thematic issues of equity, access to capital and cost-recovery.

Hisham Zerriffi shows that in each case, it is not simply a matter of matching a particular technology to a particular need. Numerous institutional factors come into play including the regulatory regime, access to financial services, and government/utility support or opposition to the DG alternative. Despite this, in many countries, the question is not whether DG has a role to play. Rather it is a question of how it will play a role.

Island Futures - Conservation and Development Across the Asia-Pacific Region (Hardcover, 2011): Godfrey Baldacchino, Daniel... Island Futures - Conservation and Development Across the Asia-Pacific Region (Hardcover, 2011)
Godfrey Baldacchino, Daniel Niles
R2,657 Discovery Miles 26 570 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Islands face one of the most pressing issues of our time: how to balance ecological integrity with economic development and collective quality of life, including the need for social and conservation space. Islands are sites of rich and varied human and ecological diversity, but they are also often characterized by narrow resource bases and dependency on links to the outside world, and by their limited ability to determine the actual character of those links. This volume reviews the challenges of island development and conservation in the Asia-Pacific region. With emphasis on nature reserves and UNESCO World Heritage sites, chapters describe the benefits, barriers, and potential pitfalls in preserving such sites, managing biota, and attracting and controlling tourism. The book also provides a provocative challenge to move beyond the typical concerns of "sustainability" to the more holistic concept of "futurability," or "future potential" for convivial human-environmental interactions.

Francesca Pagliara, Michiel De Bok, David Simmonds, Alan Wilson
R4,477 R3,406 Discovery Miles 34 060 Save R1,071 (24%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The focus of this book is the modeling of the location of economic activities, measured in terms of employment, in land-use and transportation systems. These measures are key inputs to models at intra-urban scales of the flows of persons and goods for both urban and transport planning. The models described here are either components of comprehensive models or specialist studies. Economic activities can be defined in terms of jobs or private-sector firms and public service organisations. Different levels of aggregation are used both in terms of organisational and geographical dimensions. In the case of firms and public organizations, a distinction can be made between the organizations themselves and corresponding establishments. For urban simulation models, it is the location of establishments that is important. At the more coarse levels of aggregation that are usually used in comprehensive models, firms and organizations are aggregated into sectors.

Residential Location Choice - Models and Applications (Hardcover, 2010 ed.): Francesca Pagliara, John Preston, David Simmonds Residential Location Choice - Models and Applications (Hardcover, 2010 ed.)
Francesca Pagliara, John Preston, David Simmonds
R2,788 Discovery Miles 27 880 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The effective planning of residential location choices is one of the great challenges of contemporary societies and requires forecasting capabilities and the consideration of complex interdependencies which can only be handled by complex computer models. This book presents a range of approaches used to model residential locations within the context of developing land-use and transport models. These approaches illustrate the range of choices that modellers have to make in order to represent residential choice behaviour. The models presented in this book represent the state-of-the-art and are valuable both as key building blocks for general urban models, and as representative examples of complexity science.

The impact of these "worlds on the move" on globalisation, migration and identity negotiations is the subject matter of this book.

Clean, Green and Responsible? - Soundings from Down Under (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Gabriel Eweje, Ralph J. Bathurst Clean, Green and Responsible? - Soundings from Down Under (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Gabriel Eweje, Ralph J. Bathurst
R2,673 Discovery Miles 26 730 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

New Zealand and Australia are broadly considered to be countries in which sustainability and responsibility discourses are being pursued by governments and business alike, and in which incentives and initiatives are helping confront and overcome sustainability-related challenges. This book takes a closer look behind and beyond the marketing mantras of both Australia's and New Zealand's "clean and green" campaigns and, on the basis of representative examples and cases, critically evaluates the status quo. The book assesses the effectiveness of sustainability and responsibility models with a focus on the South Pacific and argues that the ways in which issues have been dealt with in this more closely defined geographical region are most likely a good indicator of how similar issues are (or soon will be) dealt with around the globe. As such, the book offers a rich source of cases on sustainability and responsibility in the business arena, a critical review, and an inspirational affirmation of responsible business practice.

Family Farming and the Worlds to Come (Hardcover, 2015 ed.): Jean-Michel Sourisseau Family Farming and the Worlds to Come (Hardcover, 2015 ed.)
Jean-Michel Sourisseau
R4,769 Discovery Miles 47 690 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

What is family farming? How can it help meet the challenges confronting the world? How can it contribute to a sustainable and more equitable development? Not only is family farming the predominant form of agriculture around the world, especially so in developing countries, it is also the agriculture of the future. By declaring 2014 the "International Year of Family Farming," the United Nations has placed this form of production at the center of debates on agricultural development. These debates are often reduced to two opposing positions. The first advocates the development of industrial or company agriculture, supposedly efficient because it follows industrial processes for market-oriented mass production. The second promotes the preservation of family farming with its close links between family and farm. The authors of this book wish to enrich the debates by helping overcome stereotypes - which often manifest through the use of terms such as "small-scale farming, subsistence farming, peasant, etc." Research work has emphatically demonstrated the great adaptability of family farming systems and their ability to meet the major challenges of tomorrow but it has also not overlooked their limitations. The authors explore the choices facing society and possible development trajectories at national and international levels, and the contribution that agriculture will have to make. They call for a recommitment of public policies in favor of family farming in developing countries and stress the importance of planning actions targeted at and tailored to the family character of agricultural models. But, above all, they highlight the need to overcome strictly sectoral rationales, by placing family farming at the core of a broader economic and social project. This book is the result of a collaborative effort led by CIRAD and encapsulates three decades of research on family farming. It will interest researchers, teachers and students, and all those involved in national and international efforts for the development of countries in the South.
