The Agglomeration of the Animation Industry in East Asia (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2014): Kenta... The Agglomeration of the Animation Industry in East Asia (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2014)
Kenta Yamamoto
R3,039 Discovery Miles 30 390 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book will be of interest to scholars and students of Asian studies, cultural industries, economic geography, and related areas of study. It discusses the results of a microscopic survey focusing on topics such as how animation studios form business relationships and how workers gain skills in the industry. The methodology was based on traditional Japanese economic geographical methods. The study also examines macroscopic issues such as why industrial agglomerations are formed in metropolises, why metropolises develop mutual networks, and how a type of cultural product is created in the metropolises. The methodology uses case studies of the animation industries in Japan, South Korea, and China. The detailed analysis covers the process of the industry’s agglomeration within the East Asian metropolises of Tokyo, Seoul, and Shanghai as well as the division of labor among them. In addition, the transaction relationships among animation studios are examined, together with the promotion of the industry in the peripheral region of Okinawa, Japan. Differences in work styles and output among these cities are also examined. The research presented in this book contributes to understanding the spatial structure and reality of creativity in an innovative industry, particularly the East Asian content industry.

Firms’ Location Selections and Regional Policy in the Global Economy (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed.... Firms’ Location Selections and Regional Policy in the Global Economy (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2015)
Toshiharu Ishikawa
R3,398 Discovery Miles 33 980 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book offers a new understanding of how firms determine their location and what kinds of regional economic policies are needed to attract factories to a country and a region in a highly globalized economic setting. The theoretical and empirical analyses examine the influence of the transfer pricing system, corporate tax rates, and a country’s industrial structure on a firm’s decision to locate and the impact of firms’ location on regional economic activities. The theoretical analysis elucidates the importance of the above-mentioned factors in the firm’s selection of possible location. The empirical analysis uses as an example the case of a supply chain in East Asia. The empirical analysis is illustrated with the regional/spatial development experiences at the country level and city level of selected countries and cities. The analysis offers a perspective for understanding the spatial patterns of a cross-border production system.

Names, Ethnicity and Populations - Tracing Identity in Space (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2014): Pablo... Names, Ethnicity and Populations - Tracing Identity in Space (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2014)
Pablo Mateos
R3,377 Discovery Miles 33 770 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Ethnicity has become one of the most studied human dimensions in social and biomedical sciences over the past decade. However, there are important shortcomings in the means available to researchers to define and classify human group difference in past, as well as contemporary populations. Personal naming conventions usually adhere to unwritten social norms and customs that with time end up producing distinctive cultural, ethnic, linguistic, religious and geographic patterns in name distributions. This book follows the fascinating journey of personal names across the world, using maps and networks to identify alternative combinations of ethnic and geographic origins in contemporary population groups and neighbourhoods. This innovative approach allows population researchers to build more nuanced understandings about the history and immediate future of our contemporary multicultural societies, at a time in which the predominant political discourse and public debates are challenging increasing population diversity in the developed world.

Written by renowned academics and experts from the region, the book seeks to provide a better understanding of regional challenges and trends, regional disparities that exist in many Latin American countries and the increasing importance of metropolitan areas.

European Metropolitan Commercial Real Estate Markets (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2014): Ed F.... European Metropolitan Commercial Real Estate Markets (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2014)
Ed F. Nozeman, Arno J. Van der Vlist
R3,536 Discovery Miles 35 360 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Metropolitan commercial real estate markets are highly influenced by global forces, the regional economy, and institutional behaviour. While descriptions of regional commercial real estate markets are well known and widespread in academic literature, this monograph goes beyond that in explaining the dynamics in and variations between European metropolitan markets. By comparing those markets on relevant indicators and through extensive data analysis, a number of explaining factors is revealed. Contributions on specific metropolitan markets with different positions within the real estate cycle illustrate not only the characteristics of the local economy and its institutions, but also urgent issues such as battling vacancy, changing retail hierarchy or managing obsolescence.

Dorothee Niebuhr
R2,041 Discovery Miles 20 410 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book investigates the recent rise of the market-oriented value chain approach in development policy with a focus on the agro-export sector in the Global South. The research project aims at unveiling the political, social and cultural processes around the circulation of market rationales at the global scale and on the ground. In-depth analyses of two exemplary settings, Peru and Ghana, reveal the extent to which national policies, development programs, laws and academic curricula have adopted a "thinking in terms of value chains" in the last decade. By embracing the perspectives of policymakers, consultants, entrepreneurs and producers, this book provides exciting first-hand insights about the making of markets for scholars and development practitioners alike.

Imagining India in Discourse - Meaning, Power, Structure (Paperback, 1st ed. 2017): Mohan Jyoti Dutta Imagining India in Discourse - Meaning, Power, Structure (Paperback, 1st ed. 2017)
Mohan Jyoti Dutta
R1,973 Discovery Miles 19 730 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The economic liberalization of India, changes in global structures, and the rapid emergence of India on the global landscape have been accompanied by the dramatic rise in popular, public, and elite discourses that offer the promise to imagine India. Written mostly in the future tense, these discourses conceive of India through specific frames of global change and simultaneously offer prescriptive suggestions for the pathways to fulfilling the vision. Both as summary accounts of the shifts taking place in India and in the relationships of India with other global actors as well as roadmaps for the immediate and longer term directions for India, these discourses offer meaningful entry points into elite imaginations of India. Engaging these imaginations creates a framework for understanding the tropes that are mobilized in support of specific policy formulations in economic, political, cultural, and social spheres. Connecting meanings within networks of power and structure help make sense of the symbolic articulations of India within material relationships.

Eighteenth-Century Art Worlds - Global and Local Geographies of Art (Paperback): Michael Yonan, Stacey Sloboda Eighteenth-Century Art Worlds - Global and Local Geographies of Art (Paperback)
Michael Yonan, Stacey Sloboda
R945 Discovery Miles 9 450 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

While the connected, international character of today's art economy is well known, the 18th century too had global systems of artistic production and consumption. Eighteenth-Century Art Worlds is the first book to create a global map of the art world of the 18th century. Fourteen case studies from distinguished experts explore both cross-cultural connections and local specificities of art production and consumption in Africa, the Americas, Asia, and Europe. The result is an account of a series of interconnected and asymmetrical art worlds that were well developed in the 18th century. Capturing the full material diversity of 18th-century art, this book considers painting and sculpture alongside numerous prints and decorative objects. Analyzing the role of place in the history of 18th-century art, it bridges the disciplines of art history and cultural geography, and draws attention away from any one place as a privileged art-historical site, while highlighting places such as Manila, Beijing, Mexico City, and London as significant points on a global art map. Eighteenth-Century Art Worlds combines a broad global perspective on the history of art with careful attention to how global artistic concerns intersect with local ones, offering a framework for studies in global art history.

Renewable Energy: Problems and Prospects in Coachella Valley, California (Paperback, 1st ed. 2017): James B. Pick Renewable Energy: Problems and Prospects in Coachella Valley, California (Paperback, 1st ed. 2017)
James B. Pick
R2,076 Discovery Miles 20 760 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The book analyzes the problems and potential of renewable energy development for the Coachella Valley of California and provides a useful case study for renewable energy feasibility assessments for other areas. A conceptual model, Integrated Policy Assessment Theory for Renewable Energy, is given and justified for renewable energy development in the Valley. Further, Central Place Theory, well known in urban geography, is discussed and it is seen to be very relevant to the understanding the Coachella Valley's city sizes and renewable energy markets, compared to the greater Los Angeles region. The book's research methods include geospatial mapping and analysis and interviews leaders in small innovative firms, government agencies, and nonprofits. The many findings of the book include evaluation of how the Valley's socioeconomic and transportation features influence renewable energy development, the scope of markets for solar and wind energy in the Valley, spatial confluences of renewable energy facilities with other features, and the future potential of ground-source heat pumps. Benchmark comparison of the Coachella Valley is done with two leading wind and solar regions elsewhere in the country, to assess the Valley's evolution and opportunities in renewable energy. The book concludes by evaluating the prospects and problems for the growth of renewable entrepreneurship, manufacturing, assembly, and operations in Coachella Valley. This leads to policy recommendations grounded in the book's research findings, which are intended for use by governments, businesses, and nonprofits. The hope is that many of the developmental experiences from the Coachella Valley will be helpful not only within the Valley but to other communities nationwide and worldwide.

Re-Thinking Organic Food and Farming in a Changing World (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2015): Bernhard... Re-Thinking Organic Food and Farming in a Changing World (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2015)
Bernhard Freyer, Jim Bingen
R2,291 Discovery Miles 22 910 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book is based on the assumption that “organic has lost its wayâ€.  Paradoxically, it comes at a time when we witness the continuing of growth in organic food production and markets around the world. Yet, the book claims that organic has lost sight of its first or fundamental philosophical principles and ontological assumptions. The collection offers empirically grounded discussions that address the principles and fundamental assumptions of organic farming and marketing practices. The book draws attention to the core principles of organic and offers different clearly articulated and well-defined conceptual frameworks that offer new insights into organic practices. Divided into five parts, the book presents new perspectives on enduring issues, examines standards and certification, gives insights into much-discussed and additional market and consumer issues, and reviews the interplay of organic and conventional farming. The book concludes with a framework for rethinking ethics in the organic movement and reflections on the positioning of organic ethics.

Labor in a Globalizing City - Economic Restructuring in São Paulo, Brazil (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st... Labor in a Globalizing City - Economic Restructuring in São Paulo, Brazil (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2014)
Simone Judith Buechler
R3,546 Discovery Miles 35 460 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The extraordinary stories of low-income women living in São Paulo, industrial case studies and the details of three squatter settlements, and communities in the periphery researched in Simone Buechler’s book, Labor in a Globalizing City, allow us to better understand the period of economic transformation in São Paulo from 1996 to 2003.  Buechler’s in-depth ethnographic research over a period of 17 years include interviews with a variety of social actors ranging from favela inhabitants to Wall Street bankers. Buechler examines the paradox of a globalizing city with highly developed financial, service, and industrial sectors, but at the same time a growing sector of microenterprises, degraded labor, considerable unemployment, unprecedented inequality, and precarious infrastructure in its low-income communities. The author argues that informalization and low-income women’s labor are an integral part of the global economy.  Other countries are continuing to use the same kind of neo-liberal economic model even though once again with the latest global financial crisis, it has proven to be detrimental to many workers.

Knowledge Flows, Technological Change and Regional Growth in the European Union (Paperback, 2013 ed.): Malgorzata... Knowledge Flows, Technological Change and Regional Growth in the European Union (Paperback, 2013 ed.)
Malgorzata Runiewicz-Wardyn
R3,292 Discovery Miles 32 920 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The book provides conceptual and empirical insights into the complex relationship between knowledge flows and regional growth in the EU. The author critically scrutinizes and enhances the RIS (Regional Innovation System) approach, discussing innovation as a technological, institutional and evolutionary process. Moreover, she advances the ongoing discourse on the role of space and technological proximity in the process of innovation and technological externalities. The book closes with an investigation of the role of technological change and knowledge spillovers in the dynamic growth and "catching-up" of EU regions.

Developing Geographical Indications in the South - The Southern African Experience (Paperback, 2013 ed.): Cerkia Bramley,... Developing Geographical Indications in the South - The Southern African Experience (Paperback, 2013 ed.)
Cerkia Bramley, Estelle Bienabe, Johann Kirsten
R3,018 Discovery Miles 30 180 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book contributes to the literature on Geographical Indications (GIs) by providing key theoretical reflections from a five-year review process on the potential of GIs for agri-food products in Southern Africa. The contributors reflect on diverse GI processes and dynamics which operate at the local, national and international levels, thus enriching the understanding of GI dynamics and of the variety of policy options available for GI protection in Southern countries. Following a discussion of the legal framework and governance of national GI schemes in Southern countries, the book emphasizes the main dimensions underlying the development of GIs and their potential for enhancing sustainable rural development and market access in particular. This provides the structure for the chapters that build on the different experiences of Southern African industries that have embarked on GI strategies. The book includes chapters on designing an appropriate legal framework and governance system for the development of GIs in Southern countries.

Quintessential Cities, Accountable to the Future - Sustainability, Innovation and Citizenship (Paperback, 2013 ed.): Voula Mega Quintessential Cities, Accountable to the Future - Sustainability, Innovation and Citizenship (Paperback, 2013 ed.)
Voula Mega
R3,872 Discovery Miles 38 720 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book can be seen as the third part of an unofficial trilogy on Sustainable Cities of the Future with the author's previous books 'Sustainable Development, Energy and the City' and 'Sustainable Cities for the third millennium: The Odyssey of urban excellence', both prefaced by Prof. Sir Peter Hall. All three books follow the evolving forefront of innovations towards Sustainable Cities. They collectively try to respond to the questions: What future cities wish to build (with their scarcities and capacities) on a finite planet? What do-they do to achieve this? How do-they contribute to redesign the world? The third book adopts, first and foremost, a strategic foresight approach including a scan of the future trends, tensions and risks in a more uncertain world, the possible and preferable futures, emerging policy issues, such as intergenerational cities or cities welcoming the immigrants and their impact on sustainable development, the Rio+20 prospects and the effects of the protracted crisis, efforts by world interconnected cities, including a case-study on Bangkok, a laboratory of urban change, and examples of frugal and resilient urban policies.

Regional Energy Demand and Energy Efficiency in Japan - An Application of Economic Analysis (Paperback, 1st ed. 2017): Akihiro... Regional Energy Demand and Energy Efficiency in Japan - An Application of Economic Analysis (Paperback, 1st ed. 2017)
Akihiro Otsuka
R1,645 Discovery Miles 16 450 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book describes structural analysis methods for examining energy demand and energy efficiency that are important in formulating regional economic and environmental policies. Beginning with ways of ascertaining regional energy demand, it describes methods for developing energy efficiency indicators and their determinants. Fluctuations in regional energy demand are largely explained by analyzing variations in energy intensity, and there is a strong association between energy efficiency indicators and energy intensity. The energy efficiency indicator proposed is consistent with fluctuations in energy intensity and is highly accurate. According to the empirical analysis using this indicator, energy efficiency is high in regions where population concentration has risen, as typified by "compact cities." As such, the book highlights the need to increase regional energy efficiency, to achieve regional economic growth despite growing environmental constraints, and the importance of forming and developing clusters to this end. The book is a valuable resource for planners, researchers and government employees.

Sustainable Transport Studies in Asia (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2013): Akimasa Fujiwara, Junyi Zhang Sustainable Transport Studies in Asia (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2013)
Akimasa Fujiwara, Junyi Zhang
R3,419 Discovery Miles 34 190 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book aims to provide a good understanding of and perspective on sustainable transport in Asia by focusing on economic, environmental, and social sustainability. It is widely acknowledged that the current situation and trends in transport are not always sustainable in Asia, due in part to the fast-growing economy and the astounding speed of urbanization as well as least-mature governance. As essential research material, the book provides strong support for policy makers and planners by comprehensively covering three groups of strategies, characterized by the words "avoid" (e.g., urban form design and control of car ownership), "shift" (e.g., establishing comprehensive transportation systems and increasing public transportation systems for both intracity and intercity travel), and "improve" (e.g., redesign of paratransit system, low-emission vehicles, intelligent transportation systems, and eco-life). These are elaborated in the book alongside consideration of the uncertainty of policy effects in the future. The book is also valuable for scholars and scientists because of the diverse methodologies presented and proposed herein. Among those are the four-step model with full feedback mechanisms, the bi-level programming model with sustainability goals, data envelopment analysis and stochastic frontier analysis approaches, structural equation models, discrete and/or continuous choice models, copula-based models, survival models, and driving risk models with short-term memory. Using data collected from more than ten Asian cities, including those in both developed and developing nations, the pathway to sustainable transport in Asia gradually becomes clear.

Metropolitan Regions - Knowledge Infrastructures of the Global Economy (Paperback, 2013 ed.): Johan Klaesson, Boerje Johansson,... Metropolitan Regions - Knowledge Infrastructures of the Global Economy (Paperback, 2013 ed.)
Johan Klaesson, Boerje Johansson, Charlie Karlsson
R2,764 Discovery Miles 27 640 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Metropolitan growth has been dramatic in the past several decades, and today metropolitan regions are recognized as the main driving forces in national growth and development as well as in national and global innovation processes. The purpose of this book is to contribute to a better understanding of how metropolitan regions and their subsystems interact and compete, why they differ in their capacity to nurture innovation and growth, and how metropolitan policies must be designed to secure the region's long-term vitality. To that end, it presents new contributions on theories of urban growth, institutions and policies of urban change, and case studies of urban growth prepared by international experts.

The Andes - A Geographical Portrait (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2015): Axel Borsdorf, Christoph Stadel The Andes - A Geographical Portrait (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2015)
Axel Borsdorf, Christoph Stadel; Translated by Brigitte Scott, Christoph Stadel
R5,617 Discovery Miles 56 170 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The Andes are attracting global interest again: they hold valuable mineral resources, tourists appreciate their great natural beauty and the diversity of indigenous cultures, climbers scale rock and ice faces, while many others are intrigued by regional political developments, such as the Bolivarian revolution in Venezuela or the almost unfettered hegemony of the neoliberal economic model in Chile. This volume is the first attempt for decades to present a complete overview of the longest mountain chain on the planet - a region of remarkable climatic, floristic and geologic diversity, where advanced civilization developed well before the arrival of the Spanish. Today the Andes continue to be characterized by their ethnic, demographic, cultural and economic diversity, as well as by the disparity of local socioeconomic groups. The Andean countries pursue a wide range of approaches to tackle the challenges of making the best use of their natural and cultural potential without damaging their ecological basis, as well as to overcome economic disparity and foster social cohesion. This book provides insights into this unique region and its most pressing issues, complemented by a wealth of pictures and comprehensive diagrams, which, in sum, help to better understand these fascinating mountains.

Defining the Spatial Scale in Modern Regional Analysis - New Challenges from Data at Local Level (Paperback, 2012 ed.): Esteban... Defining the Spatial Scale in Modern Regional Analysis - New Challenges from Data at Local Level (Paperback, 2012 ed.)
Esteban Fernandez Vazquez, Fernando Rubiera Morollon
R4,056 Discovery Miles 40 560 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book explores different approaches to defining the concept of region depending on the specific question that needs to be answered. While the typical administrative spatial data division fits certain research questions well, in many cases, defining regions in a different way is fundamental in order to obtain significant empirical evidence. The book is divided into three parts: The first part is dedicated to a methodological discussion of the concept of region and the different potential approaches from different perspectives. The problem of having sufficient information to define different regional units is always present. This justifies the second part of the book, which focuses on the techniques of ecological inference applied to estimating disaggregated data from observable aggregates. Finally, the book closes by presenting several applications that are in line with the functional areas definition in regional analysis.
