Viscosity of Liquids - Theory, Estimation, Experiment, and Data (Hardcover, 2007 ed.): Dabir S. Viswanath, Tushar K. Ghosh,... Viscosity of Liquids - Theory, Estimation, Experiment, and Data (Hardcover, 2007 ed.)
Dabir S. Viswanath, Tushar K. Ghosh, Dasika. H. L. Prasad, Nidamarty V. K. Dutt, Kalipatnapu Y Rani
R5,563 Discovery Miles 55 630 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The need for properties is ever increasing to make processes more economical. A good survey of the viscosity data, its critical evaluation and correlation would help design engineers, scientists and technologists in their areas of interest. This type of work assumes more importance as the amount of experimental work in collection and correlation of properties such as viscosity, thermal conductivity, heat capacities, etc has reduced drastically both at the industry, universities, and national laboratories. One of the c o-authors, Professor Viswanath, co-authored a book jointly with Dr. Natarajan Data Book on the Viscosity of Liquids in 1989 which mainly presented collected and evaluated liquid viscosity data from the literature. Although it is one of its kinds in the field, Prof. Viswanath recognized that the design engineers, scientists and technologists should have a better understanding of theories, experimental procedures, and operational aspects of viscometers. Also, rarely the data are readily available at the conditions that are necessary for design of the equipment or for other calculations. Therefore, the data must be interpolated or extrapolated using the existing literature data and using appropriate correlations or models. We have tried to address these issues in this book."

Tackling Turbulent Flows in Engineering (Hardcover, 2011 ed.): Anupam Dewan Tackling Turbulent Flows in Engineering (Hardcover, 2011 ed.)

Multicomponent Interfacial Transport - Described by the Square Gradient Model during Evaporation and Condensation (Hardcover,... Multicomponent Interfacial Transport - Described by the Square Gradient Model during Evaporation and Condensation (Hardcover, 2011 ed.)
Kirill Glavatskiy
R2,894 Discovery Miles 28 940 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A thermodynamically consistent description of the transport across interfaces in mixtures has for a long time been an open issue. This research clarifies that the interface between a liquid and a vapor in a mixture is in local equilibrium during evaporation and condensation. It implies that the thermodynamics developed for interfaces by Gibbs can be applied also away from equilibrium, which is typically the case in reality. A description of phase transitions is of great importance for the understanding of both natural and industrial processes. For example, it is relevant for the understanding of the increase of CO2 concentration in the atmosphere, or improvements of efficiency in distillation columns. This excellent work of luminescent scientific novelty has brought this area a significant step forward. The systematic documentation of the approach will facilitate further applications of the theoretical framework to important problems.

Exercises that parallel the examples build readers' confidence and prepare them to confront the more complex situations they encounter as professionals.

Piezo-Active Composites - Orientation Effects and Anisotropy Factors (Hardcover, 2014 ed.): Vitaly Yu. Topolov, Paolo Bisegna,... Piezo-Active Composites - Orientation Effects and Anisotropy Factors (Hardcover, 2014 ed.)
Vitaly Yu. Topolov, Paolo Bisegna, Christopher R. Bowen
R3,326 Discovery Miles 33 260 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The book is devoted to the problem of microgeometry properties and anisotropy relations in modern piezo-active composites. These materials are characterized by various electromechanical properties and remarkable abilities to convert mechanical energy into electric energy and vice versa. Advantages of the performance of the composites are discussed in the context of the orientation effects, first studied by the authors for main connectivity patterns and with due regard to a large anisotropy of effective piezoelectric coefficients and electromechanical coupling factors. The novelty of the book consists in the systematization results of orientation effects, the anisotropy of piezoelectric properties and their role in forming considerable hydrostatic piezoelectric coefficients, electromechanical coupling factors and other parameters in the composites based on either ferroelectric ceramic or relaxor-ferroelectric single crystals.

Computer Simulation of Thermal Plant Operations (Hardcover, 2013 ed.): Peter O'Kelly Computer Simulation of Thermal Plant Operations (Hardcover, 2013 ed.)
Peter O'Kelly
R5,017 Discovery Miles 50 170 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book describes thermal plant simulation, that is, dynamic simulation of plants which produce, exchange and otherwise utilize heat as their working medium. Directed at chemical, mechanical and control engineers involved with operations, control and optimization and operator training, the book gives the mathematical formulation and use of simulation models of the equipment and systems typically found in these industries. The author has adopted a fundamental approach to the subject. The initial chapters provide an overview of simulation concepts and describe a suitable computer environment. Reviews of relevant numerical computation methods and fundamental thermodynamics are followed by a detailed examination of the basic conservation equations. The bulk of the book is concerned with development of specific simulation models. Care is taken to trace each model derivation path from the basic underlying physical equations, explaining simplifying and restrictive assumptions as they arise and relating the model coefficients to the physical dimensions and physical properties of the working materials. Numerous photographs of real equipment complement the text and most models are illustrated by numerical examples based on typical real plant operations.

Latif M Jiji
R3,039 Discovery Miles 30 390 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is designed to: Provide students with the tools to model, analyze and solve a wide range of engineering applications involving conduction heat transfer. Introduce students to three topics not commonly covered in conduction heat transfer textbooks: perturbation methods, heat transfer in living tissue, and microscale conduction. Take advantage of the mathematical simplicity of o- dimensional conduction to present and explore a variety of physical situations that are of practical interest. Present textbook material in an efficient and concise manner to be covered in its entirety in a one semester graduate course. Drill students in a systematic problem solving methodology with emphasis on thought process, logic, reasoning and verification. To accomplish these objectives requires judgment and balance in the selection of topics and the level of details. Mathematical techniques are presented in simplified fashion to be used as tools in obtaining solutions. Examples are carefully selected to illustrate the application of principles and the construction of solutions. Solutions follow an orderly approach which is used in all examples. To provide consistency in solutions logic, I have prepared solutions to all problems included in the first ten chapters myself. Instructors are urged to make them available electronically rather than posting them or presenting them in class in an abridged form.

High-Entropy Materials - A Brief Introduction (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Yong Zhang High-Entropy Materials - A Brief Introduction (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Yong Zhang
R4,948 Discovery Miles 49 480 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book draws on the latest research to discuss the history and development of high-entropy alloys and ceramics in bulk, film, and fiber form. High-entropy materials have recently been developed using the entropy of mixing and entropy of configuration of materials, and have proven to exhibit unique properties superior to those of conventional materials. The field of high-entropy alloys was born in 2004, and has since been developed for both scientific and engineering applications. Although there is extensive literature, this field is rapidly transforming. This book highlights the cutting edge of high-entropy materials, including their fundamentals and applications. Above all, it reflects two major milestones in their development: the equi-atomic ratio single-phase high-entropy alloys; and the non-equi-atomic ratio dual-phase high-entropy alloys.

Advanced Materials for Thermal Management of Electronic Packaging (Hardcover, 2011 Ed.): Xingcun Colin Tong Advanced Materials for Thermal Management of Electronic Packaging (Hardcover, 2011 Ed.)
Xingcun Colin Tong
R6,713 Discovery Miles 67 130 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The need for advanced thermal management materials in electronic packaging has been widely recognized as thermal challenges become barriers to the electronic industry's ability to provide continued improvements in device and system performance. With increased performance requirements for smaller, more capable, and more efficient electronic power devices, systems ranging from active electronically scanned radar arrays to web servers all require components that can dissipate heat efficiently. This requires that the materials have high capability of dissipating heat and maintaining compatibility with the die and electronic packaging. In response to critical needs, there have been revolutionary advances in thermal management materials and technologies for active and passive cooling that promise integrable and cost-effective thermal management solutions. This book meets the need for a comprehensive approach to advanced thermal management in electronic packaging, with coverage of the fundamentals of heat transfer, component design guidelines, materials selection and assessment, air, liquid, and thermoelectric cooling, characterization techniques and methodology, processing and manufacturing technology, balance between cost and performance, and application niches. The final chapter presents a roadmap and future perspective on developments in advanced thermal management materials for electronic packaging.

Nuclear Energy for Hydrogen Generation through Intermediate Heat Exchangers - A Renewable Source of Energy (Hardcover, 1st ed.... Nuclear Energy for Hydrogen Generation through Intermediate Heat Exchangers - A Renewable Source of Energy (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Bahman Zohuri
R4,239 R3,591 Discovery Miles 35 910 Save R648 (15%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book describes recent technological developments in next generation nuclear reactors that have created renewed interest in nuclear process heat for industrial applications. The author's discussion mirrors the industry's emerging focus on combined cycle Next Generation Nuclear Plants' (NGNP) seemingly natural fit in producing electricity and process heat for hydrogen production. To utilize this process heat, engineers must uncover a thermal device that can transfer the thermal energy from the NGNP to the hydrogen plant in the most performance efficient and cost effective way possible. This book is written around that vital quest, and the author describes the usefulness of the Intermediate Heat Exchanger (IHX) as a possible solution. The option to transfer heat and thermal energy via a single-phase forced convection loop where fluid is mechanically pumped between the heat exchangers at the nuclear and hydrogen plants is presented, and challenges associated with this tactic are discussed. As a second option, heat pipes and thermosyphons, with their ability to transport very large quantities of heat over relatively long distance with small temperature losses, are also examined.

IUTAM Symposium on Lubricated Transport of Viscous Materials - Proceedings of the IUTAM Symposium held in Tobago, West Indies,... IUTAM Symposium on Lubricated Transport of Viscous Materials - Proceedings of the IUTAM Symposium held in Tobago, West Indies, 7-10 January 1997 (Hardcover, 1998 ed.)
Harold Ramkissoon
R4,375 Discovery Miles 43 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The main objective of the First International Symposium on Lubricated Transport of Viscous Materials was to bring together scientists and engineers from academia and industryto discuss current research work and exchange ideas in this newly emerging field. It is an area offluid dynamics devoted to laying bare the principlesofthe lubricated transport of viscous materials such as crude oil, concentrated oil/water emulsion, slurries and capsules. It encompasses several types of problem. Studies of migration of particulates away from walls, Segre-Silverberg effects, lubrication versus lift and shear-induced migration belong to one category. Some of the technological problems are the fluid dynamics ofcore flows emphasizing studies ofstability, problems of start-up, lift-off and eccentric flow where gravity causes the core flow to stratify. Another category of problems deals with the fouling of pipe walls with oil, with undesirable increases in pressure gradients and even blocking. This study involves subjects like adhesion and dynamic contact angles. The topics ofshear-induced diffusion ofsmall particles and wall slip in slow flow are other appropriate subjects. Computer intensive studiesofflow-induced microstructures and moving interface problems are yet additional research directions. The general consensus was that the Symposium was a tremendous success, although the number of presentations fell below expectations. Scientists from the petroleum industry, and this includes INTEVEP (Venezuela), Schlumberger and Syncrude Canada Ltd., and consultants to oil companies actively participated in the Symposium. The meeting produced new insights which should lead to further interesting research work and established contacts for possiblejoint investigations."

Internal Variables in Thermoelasticity (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Arkadi Berezovski, Peter Van Internal Variables in Thermoelasticity (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Arkadi Berezovski, Peter Van
R4,582 R3,371 Discovery Miles 33 710 Save R1,211 (26%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book describes an effective method for modeling advanced materials like polymers, composite materials and biomaterials, which are, as a rule, inhomogeneous. The thermoelastic theory with internal variables presented here provides a general framework for predicting a material's reaction to external loading. The basic physical principles provide the primary theoretical information, including the evolution equations of the internal variables. The cornerstones of this framework are the material representation of continuum mechanics, a weak nonlocality, a non-zero extra entropy flux, and a consecutive employment of the dissipation inequality. Examples of thermoelastic phenomena are provided, accompanied by detailed procedures demonstrating how to simulate them.

Fluid and Thermodynamics - Volume 2: Advanced Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamic Fundamentals (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016):... Fluid and Thermodynamics - Volume 2: Advanced Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamic Fundamentals (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Kolumban Hutter, Yongqi Wang
R4,422 Discovery Miles 44 220 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this book fluid mechanics and thermodynamics (F&T) are approached as interwoven, not disjoint fields. The book starts by analyzing the creeping motion around spheres at rest: Stokes flows, the Oseen correction and the Lagerstrom-Kaplun expansion theories are presented, as is the homotopy analysis. 3D creeping flows and rapid granular avalanches are treated in the context of the shallow flow approximation, and it is demonstrated that uniqueness and stability deliver a natural transition to turbulence modeling at the zero, first order closure level. The difference-quotient turbulence model (DQTM) closure scheme reveals the importance of the turbulent closure schemes' non-locality effects. Thermodynamics is presented in the form of the first and second laws, and irreversibility is expressed in terms of an entropy balance. Explicit expressions for constitutive postulates are in conformity with the dissipation inequality. Gas dynamics offer a first application of combined F&T. The book is rounded out by a chapter on dimensional analysis, similitude, and physical experiments.
