Multiphase Flow Dynamics 1 - Fundamentals (Hardcover, 5th ed. 2015): Nikolay Ivanov Kolev Multiphase Flow Dynamics 1 - Fundamentals (Hardcover, 5th ed. 2015)
Nikolay Ivanov Kolev
R5,404 Discovery Miles 54 040 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In its fifth extended edition the successful monograph package "Multiphase Flow Dynamics" contains theory, methods and practical experience for describing complex transient multi-phase processes in arbitrary geometrical configurations, providing a systematic presentation of the theory and practice of numerical multi-phase fluid dynamics. In the present first volume the local volume and time averaging is used to derive a complete set of conservation equations for three fluids each of them having multi components as constituents. Large parts of the book are devoted on the design of successful numerical methods for solving the obtained system of partial differential equations. Finally the analysis is repeated for boundary fitted curvilinear coordinate systems designing methods applicable for interconnected multi-blocks. This fifth edition includes various updates, extensions, improvements and corrections, as well as a completely new chapter containing the basic physics describing the multi-phase flow in turbines, compressors, pumps and other rotating hydraulic machines.

Magnetic Confinement Fusion Driven Thermonuclear Energy (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Bahman Zohuri Magnetic Confinement Fusion Driven Thermonuclear Energy (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Bahman Zohuri
R3,943 Discovery Miles 39 430 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book covers the principles and practices behind the Magnetic Confinement Fusion (MCF) approach to driven new source of energy. All possible technical methods, including well established theoretical research, as well as findings tested in an experimental tokamak reactor, are examined in order to determine how to best achieve breakeven via this pathway to plasma-driven fusion. The author undertakes a life cycle analysis to compare and contrast the efficiency, environmental impacts, and operating costs of plasma-driven MCF fusion against other forms of energy generation currently in widespread use. The associated computer code and numerical analysis are included in the book. No prior knowledge of MCF and no more than basic background in plasma physics is required.

Analytical Methods for Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow Problems (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 2015): Bernhard Weigand Analytical Methods for Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow Problems (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 2015)
Bernhard Weigand
R1,470 Discovery Miles 14 700 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book describes useful analytical methods by applying them to real-world problems rather than solving the usual over-simplified classroom problems. The book demonstrates the applicability of analytical methods even for complex problems and guides the reader to a more intuitive understanding of approaches and solutions. Although the solution of Partial Differential Equations by numerical methods is the standard practice in industries, analytical methods are still important for the critical assessment of results derived from advanced computer simulations and the improvement of the underlying numerical techniques. Literature devoted to analytical methods, however, often focuses on theoretical and mathematical aspects and is therefore useless to most engineers. Analytical Methods for Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow Problems addresses engineers and engineering students. The second edition has been updated, the chapters on non-linear problems and on axial heat conduction problems were extended. And worked out examples were included.

Classical Relaxation Phenomenology (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Ian M. Hodge Classical Relaxation Phenomenology (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Ian M. Hodge
R2,676 Discovery Miles 26 760 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book serves as a self-contained reference source for engineers, materials scientists, and physicists with an interest in relaxation phenomena. It is made accessible to students and those new to the field by the inclusion of both elementary and advanced math techniques, as well as chapter opening summaries that cover relevant background information and enhance the book's pedagogical value. These summaries cover a wide gamut from elementary to advanced topics. The book is divided into three parts. The opening part, on mathematics, presents the core techniques and approaches. Parts II and III then apply the mathematics to electrical relaxation and structural relaxation, respectively. Part II discusses relaxation of polarization at both constant electric field (dielectric relaxation) and constant displacement (conductivity relaxation), topics that are not often discussed together. Part III primarily discusses enthalpy relaxation of amorphous materials within and below the glass transition temperature range. It takes a practical approach inspired by applied mathematics in which detailed rigorous proofs are eschewed in favor of describing practical tools that are useful to scientists and engineers. Derivations are however given when these provide physical insight and/or connections to other material. A self-contained reference on relaxation phenomena Details both the mathematical basis and applications For engineers, materials scientists, and physicists

Christo Boyadjiev, Maria Doichinova, Boyan Boyadjiev, Petya Popova-Krumova
R4,667 R3,596 Discovery Miles 35 960 Save R1,071 (23%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This new edition includes brand-new developments in the modeling of processes in the column apparatuses. It analyzes the radial velocity component and axial variation in the axial velocity in the column. These models are described in five new chapters. The book presents models of chemical and interphase mass transfer processes in industrial column apparatuses, using convection-diffusion and average-concentration models. It also introduces average concentration models for quantitative analysis, which use the average values of the velocity and concentration over the cross-sectional area of the column. The new models are used to analyze a broad range of processes (simple and complex chemical reactions, physical and chemical absorption, physical and chemical adsorption, catalytic reactions in the cases of physical and chemical adsorption mechanism), and make it possible to model sulfur dioxide gas purification processes.

Mechanothermodynamics (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): Leonid Sosnovskiy, Sergei Sherbakov Mechanothermodynamics (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Leonid Sosnovskiy, Sergei Sherbakov
R1,411 Discovery Miles 14 110 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This monograph addresses the foundations of mechanothermodynamics and analyzes two of its key principles-damage of everything that exists has no conceivable limits, and effective energy (entropy) flows caused by loads of a different nature do not have a cumulative property; they interact dialectically. The authors examine a generalized model of energy and entropy states of a mechanothermodynamical medium, which generally is a continuum (liquid, gaseous) containing distributed solid deformable, and, therefore, damageable bodies, as a problem of information states of movable and damageable systems and express a solution in the first approximation. The book goes on to analyze some directions of further research in its conclusion. It is ideal for scientists, engineers, post graduate and master students of mechanics, mathematics and physics.

Heat Transfers and Related Effects in Supercritical Fluids (Hardcover, 2015 ed.): Bernard Zappoli, Daniel Beysens, Yves Garrabos Heat Transfers and Related Effects in Supercritical Fluids (Hardcover, 2015 ed.)
Bernard Zappoli, Daniel Beysens, Yves Garrabos
R4,185 R3,654 Discovery Miles 36 540 Save R531 (13%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book investigates the unique hydrodynamics and heat transfer problems that are encountered in the vicinity of the critical point of fluids. Emphasis is given on weightlessness conditions, gravity effects and thermovibrational phenomena. Near their critical point, fluids indeed obey universal behavior and become very compressible and expandable. Their comportment, when gravity effects are suppressed, becomes quite unusual.

The problems that are treated in this book are of interest to students and researchers interested in the original behavior of near-critical fluids as well as to engineers that have to manage supercritical fluids. A special chapter is dedicated to the present knowledge of critical point phenomena. Specific data for many fluids are provided, ranging from cryogenics (hydrogen) to high temperature (water). Basic information in statistical mechanics, mathematics and measurement techniques is also included. The basic concepts of fluid mechanics are given for the non-specialists to be able to read the parts he is interested in. Asymptotic theory of heat transfer by thermoacoustic processes is provided with enough details for PhD students or researchers and engineers to begin in the field. Key spaces are described in details, with many comparisons between theory and experiments to illustrate the topics.

Modeling Transport Phenomena in Porous Media with Applications (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Malay K. Das, Partha P. Mukherjee, K.... Modeling Transport Phenomena in Porous Media with Applications (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Malay K. Das, Partha P. Mukherjee, K. Muralidhar
R4,967 Discovery Miles 49 670 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is an ensemble of six major chapters, an introduction, and a closure on modeling transport phenomena in porous media with applications. Two of the six chapters explain the underlying theories, whereas the rest focus on new applications. Porous media transport is essentially a multi-scale process. Accordingly, the related theory described in the second and third chapters covers both continuum- and meso-scale phenomena. Examining the continuum formulation imparts rigor to the empirical porous media models, while the mesoscopic model focuses on the physical processes within the pores. Porous media models are discussed in the context of a few important engineering applications. These include biomedical problems, gas hydrate reservoirs, regenerators, and fuel cells. The discussion reveals the strengths and weaknesses of existing models as well as future research directions.

Paradoxes in Aerohydrodynamics (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Shakhbaz A. Yershin Paradoxes in Aerohydrodynamics (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Shakhbaz A. Yershin
R4,023 R3,492 Discovery Miles 34 920 Save R531 (13%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book, on the general topic of hydroaerodynamics, investigates a number of exciting applications in this field, addressing specifically issues that allow seemingly paradoxical issues to be dealt with. The first part is devoted to the study of channel flows, in particular the lateral flow of a viscous and viscous-plastic liquid in a ring channel formed by coaxial cylinders. Specifically, the problem of dissipation of mechanical energy in channel flows of highly viscous liquids is addressed and solved. Furthermore, the mechanism leading to hydrodynamic erosion in intra-field pipelines (known as "channelized effect") is identified. Subsequently, a theory for channel flows with mass transfer through porous walls is developed. In the second part, viscous liquid free flows (jets) are investigated. In particular, a dispersion law for turbulent flow is derived and the existence of dynamic invariance in wake flows of variable density is demonstrated. The third part presents new insights from both theoretical and experimental research into concentrated vortex structure formation and development. The conditions for the existence of Taylor-Goertler vortices are determined and the mechanism for their formation is described. Last but not least, the theory of vortex rings, a particularly interesting problem in hydroaerodynamics, is introduced in the last section of this book. Care has been taken, when selecting original theoretical problems of interest, to make the link with related topics in the published literature. At the same time, all experimental research described in this book is given a meaningful physical interpretation and corroborated by suitable theoretical models and computations.

Coabsorbent and Thermal Recovery Compression Heat Pumping Technologies (Hardcover, 2014): Mihail-Dan Staicovici Coabsorbent and Thermal Recovery Compression Heat Pumping Technologies (Hardcover, 2014)
Mihail-Dan Staicovici
R2,746 Discovery Miles 27 460 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book introduces two of the most exciting heat pumping technologies, the coabsorbent and the thermal recovery (mechanical vapor) compression, characterized by a high potential in primary energy savings and environmental protection. New cycles with potential applications of nontruncated, truncated, hybrid truncated, and multi-effect coabsorbent types are introduced in this work.

Thermal-to-work recovery compression (TWRC) is the first of two particular methods explored here, including how superheat is converted into work, which diminishes the compressor work input. In the second method, thermal-to-thermal recovery compression (TTRC), the superheat is converted into useful cooling and/or heating, and added to the cycle output effect via the coabsorbent technology. These and other methods of discharge gas superheat recovery are analyzed for single-, two-, three-, and multi-stage compression cooling and heating, ammonia and ammonia-water cycles, and the effectiveness results are given.

The author presents absorption-related topics, including the divided-device method for mass and heat transfer analysis, and truncation as a unique method for a better source-task match. Along with advanced gax recovery, the first and second principles of COP and exergy calculation, the ideal point approaching (i.p.a.) effect and the two-point theory of mass and heat transfer, the book also addresses the new wording of the Laplace equation, the Marangoni effect true explanation, and the new mass and heat exchangers based on this effect.

The work goes on to explore coabsorbent separate and combined cooling, heating, and power (CHP) production and advanced water-lithium bromide cycle air-conditioning, as well as analyzing high-efficiency ammonia-water heat-driven heating and industrial low-temperature cooling, in detail.

Readers will learn how coabsorbent technology is based on classic absorption, but is more general. It is capable of offering effective solutions for all cooling and heating applications (industry, agriculture, district, household, etc.), provided that two supplying heat-sink sources with temperatures outdistanced by a minimum of 12-15 C are available. This book has clear and concise presentation and illustrates the theory and applications with diagrams, tables, and flowcharts."
