Influence without punishment, collection without rein pressure -
these apparent contradictions are explained as renowned horseman
Klaus Ferinand Hempfling demonstrates his revolutionary method of
teaching and training based upon precisely defined body language.
The method, a way of communicating in a visual language understood
by the horse, assists the rider to develop a 'presence' and to
achieve interaction with the horse. It is classically based and
embodies both holistic and spiritual principles. Packed with nearly
500 marvellous colour photographs this book has already been a
bestseller in Germany, France, Spain and Scandinavia and will
enthral every horse owner.
The official handbook for those studying the BHS teaching
qualifications has now been fully updated and revised. Written for
the BHS by a chief examiner, this handbook provides clear
guidelines on how the skills of riding should be taught and how
riding school lessons should be conducted. It is aimed at less
experienced and trainee riding instructors, especially those
involved with weekly riders and covers: - How to develop
communication skills and effective body language - Advice on
teaching adult novices and children, whether in groups or
one-to-one - Valuable multi-option lesson plans - Choosing school
horses and keeping them happy in their work - Safety and insurance,
and how to cope with mishaps and accidents - Dealing with rider
problems, such as nervousness, stiffness, poor coordination, etc.
This is the first volume in a series of course books for career
students and exam candidates preparing for the Stage 1 exam of the
British Horse Society. It includes an examination planner, in-text
self-assessment questions, BHS syllabus checklist points throughout
the text, and examination tips from BHS examiners including common
mistakes made. This book deals with the stable management syllabus
and the ridden elements of the test.

Many horse health and behaviour problems are rooted in chiropractic
issues. Through a series of 27 body checkups the horse owner can
locate where a problem lies - not always obvious! A do-it-yourself
method of determining When and Where your horse hurts. This book is
not intended to teach the reader chiropractic technique; it is
meant as a sensbible plan of action for maintaining your horse's
physical health and general happiness while preserving your sanity
and your pocketbook. Your horse's body 'talks' to you in countless
ways, and the pages ahead tell you what is is saying. It is a large
format book with concealed wiro binding, allowing the book to open
flat for ease of use.
There are still many unknowns in the breeding of Thoroughbreds, but
the international research coalition known as the Equine Genome
Project is facilitating many new exciting discoveries. Dr Matthew
Binns is a leader of the project, an enterprise set up to map the
equine genome, and with racing historian and bloodstock authority
Tony Morris has written this important book on the theory,
practice, art and science of Thoroughbred breeding. This
long-awaited book describes how man came to express pedigree and to
develop theories about it, and how practical breeders behaved in
the light of their understanding. It explains why many theories -
including some still widely granted credibility today - are
fallacious, examines the very real progress in knowledge since the
principles of genetics were discovered, and focuses on the exciting
developments of the last few years, when eminent geneticists have
applied their expertise to the subject of the Thoroughbred. It has
been the authors' endeavour to present that information in a form
that may be readily understood by anyone who shares a love of the
Thoroughbred and a fascination with what makes him what he is.
Packed with absorbing history and cutting-edge science, this is a
fascinating and illuminating book.
The Queen's Plate was inaugurated, with royal blessing, on
Wednesday, June 27, 1860, at the Carleton track in Toronto, located
in bucolic surroundings near what is now the traffic-strangled
southwestern corner of Keele and Dundas streets. There is no reason
to believe that Queen Victoria was a wild-eyed devotee of horse
racing. However, Her Majesty granted the petition of the little
turf club in the boisterous Upper Canada community (the population
of Toronto was 44,425) and offered as an annual prize, "a plate to
the value of Fifty Guineas." And thus Canadian horse racing was
established as "the sport of royalty." Today, the Queen's Plate is
the first jewel in Canada's Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing and
the longest continuously run stakes race in North America. It takes
place every June, and the first-place purse is $1 million. The
Plate is unquestionably Canada's most famous, one-day social and
sporting event. This book explores the colourful history of the
Queen's Plate through words and archival photographs.

In "Sixty Years of Welsh Champions," breed expert Dr Wynne Davies
presents a complete record of equine champions from the Royal Welsh
Show, 1947-2007. Arranged chronologically, each year lists the
female and male champions from each of the four Sections,
displaying their pedigree charts (going back to the
great-great-grandparents), and records details of the breeder and
exhibitor. Each entry is accompanied by a photograph, some of which
have never before appeared in print. In addition, the introduction
to the book offers a brief history of the show, detailing the
changes in the Section classes and the story behind the fluctuation
in the number of entries. Both a beautifully presented book with
numerous stunning photos, and an exhaustive record of the event at
the heart of the Welsh breeders calendar, this is a must have for
every Welsh Pony and Cob enthusiast.

Discover a story that defies belief: National Velvet meets Downton
Abbey with a splash of The Leopard. * LONGLISTED FOR THE WILLIAM
HILL SPORTS BOOK OF THE YEAR * Czechoslovakia, October 1937. Vast
crowds have gathered to watch the Grand Pardubice steeplechase,
Europe's most blood-curdling sporting test of manhood. With war
looming, the race has a brutal political significance. The Nazis
have sent the SS's all-conquering paramilitary horsemen to crush -
yet again - the 'subhuman Slavs'. But Lata Brandisova, a
silver-haired countess on a little golden mare, has other ideas...
