For their fourth big-screen outing the crew of the USS Enterprise abandon their usual 23rd century time frame for Earth in the year 1986. In order to save the planet from a rogue space probe in the future, Kirk (William Shatner), Spock (Leonard Nimoy), Bones (DeForest Kelley) and co must travel back to the twentieth century to find the only creature capable of communicating with it: a whale. The story is given comic treatment - Spock hides his Vulcan ears with a headband and poses as a burnt-out hippy, while the normally intrepid Kirk gets lost on a bus.
Double bill of canine adventures. In 'Beverly Hills Chihuahua' (2008), when pampered chihuahua Chloe (voiced by Drew Barrymore) gets lost while holidaying in Mexico, she is forced to rely on the kindness of various dogs she befriends as she tries to get home before she is captured by a villainous dognapper. Also in pursuit of Chloe is male chihuahua Papi (George Lopez), who is in love with her, and evil Doberman Diablo (Edward James Olmos), who has his eye on her valuable diamond collar. In 'Underdog' (2007), after an accident in the mysterious lab of mad scientist Dr. Simon Barsinister (Peter Dinklage), an ordinary beagle named Shoeshine (voice of Jason Lee) finds himself with extraordinary powers, and the ability to talk. Armed with a fetching superhero costume, Underdog vows to protect the beleaguered citizens of Capital City and, in particular, a beautiful spaniel named Polly Purebred (voice of Amy Adams). When a diabolical plot by Barsinister and his overgrown henchman Cad (Patrick Warburton) threatens to destroy Capital City, only Underdog can save the day.
A slightly different slant on the 'slacker' comedy genre directed by 'Friends' star David Schwimmer. Five years ago Dennis (Simon Pegg) was at the altar about to marry Libby (Thandie Newton), his pregnant fiancee. He got cold feet and headed for the hills, and he's been going in circles ever since. When Dennis discovers Libby's now hooked up with high-flying go-getter Whit (Hank Azaria), he realises it's now or never. Assisted by his friend Gordon (Dylan Moran), he decides to enter a marathon to show he's not a quitter but then finds out just how much sweat, strain and pain it takes to run for 26 miles. No one rates his chances, but Dennis knows this is the only way to stop being a running joke.
Miklos Jancso's classic film is a starkly atmospheric tale of friendship in the final days of World War II. Joska (Andras Kozak) is a young Hungarian making his way home, through countryside full of the debris of war, when he is captured and imprisoned by Russians. Left in the custody of a young Russian soldier, Kolya (Sergei Nikonenko), the two youths form a friendship in spite of not speaking each other's language. Joska's attempts to complete his journey homeward provide the framework for this powerful film, considered by many to be Jancso's first masterpiece.

Thought-provoking political documentary by Canadian filmmakers Jennifer Abbott and Mark Achbar. In the mid-19th century, American corporations began to be legally recognised as individuals, a move that has given them unprecedented rights. In collaboration with novelist Joel Bakan, the filmmakers pose the question: if a corporation was a person, what sort of person would it be? Applying psychiatric principles and social research, they come to the conclusion that this 'person' would be a power-hungry, egocentric and highly destructive psychopath. The film won Best Documentary World Cinema Audience Award at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival.

Hayao Miyazaki writes and directs this Japanese animated feature from Studio Ghibli. As a young boy, the bespectacled Jiro Horikoshi (voice of Hideaki Anno) dreams of flying a plane but when he learns he will be unable to become a pilot due to his poor eyesight, he instead decides to be an aircraft designer. On September 1st 1923 Jiro is travelling by train when the Great Kanto earthquake strikes. He assists fellow passenger Naoko (Miori Takimoto) and her maid who suffers an injury. He doesn't meet Naoko again till many years later after he has graduated university and has worked on various designing jobs, without finding much success. The two fall for each other and become engaged but Naoko is suffering from tuberculosis. While they try to enjoy the time they have together Jiro continues to work on designing his first successful plane. |
