An Integrated Approach for an Archaeological and Environmental Park in South-Eastern Turkey - Tilmen Hoeyuk (Hardcover, 1st ed.... An Integrated Approach for an Archaeological and Environmental Park in South-Eastern Turkey - Tilmen Hoeyuk (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Nicolo Marchetti, Giovanna Franco, Stefano Francesco Musso, Maria Benedetta Spadolini
R2,666 Discovery Miles 26 660 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book reports on a public archaeology project carried out at the ancient site of Tilmen Hoeyuk in south-eastern Turkey. The project developed and applied new methodologies and advanced technologies for the planning, design, conservation and management of an archaeological park at a site of high cultural, environmental and touristic interest, representing a significant study case for other archaeological sites in the Mediterranean area and beyond. It highlights state-of-the-art techniques of remote sensing, both for archaeological surveying and for territorial and environmental analysis through the study of high-definition aerial photos and digital photogrammetry. It also takes into account the ecological and environmental characterization data elaborated by environmental and botanic experts, fundamental for the purposes of eco-sustainability and management of the site, through climate and ground measurements aiming at vegetation control and a management model for the archaeological site itself and its green areas of outstanding naturalistic interest. Further, the book comprehensively discusses the analysis of the state of preservation of the archaeological remains and their effective conservation based on a set of measures guided by the principles of minimum intervention, feasibility and low impact on the remains, the site and its landscape. Moreover, it presents novel devices and fixed structures aimed at protecting the fragile archaeological remains and allowing safe access to visitors to the newly created archaeological park. At the intersection of archaeology, architecture and natural sciences, this book appeals to researchers and specialists in archaeology, social sciences, environmental sciences, conservation, architecture and engineering disciplines.

Revolting Things - An Archaeology of Shameful Histories and Repulsive Realities (Hardcover): Paul R Mullins Revolting Things - An Archaeology of Shameful Histories and Repulsive Realities (Hardcover)
Paul R Mullins
R2,095 Discovery Miles 20 950 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In this book, Paul Mullins examines a wide variety of material objects and landscapes that induce anxiety, provoke unpleasantness, or simply revolt us. Bringing archaeological insight to subjects that are not usually associated with the discipline, he looks at the way the material world shapes how we imagine, express, and negotiate difficult historical experiences.Revolting Things delves into well-known examples of "dark heritage" ranging from Confederate monuments to the sites of racist violence. Mullins discusses the burials and gravesites of figures who committed abhorrent acts, locations that in many cases have been either effaced or dynamically politicized. The book also considers racial displacement in the wake of post-World War II urban renewal, as well as the uneasiness many contemporary Americans feel about the social and material sameness of suburbia. Mullins shows that these places and things are often repressed in public memory and discourse because they reflect entrenched structural inequalities and injustices we are reluctant to acknowledge. Yet he argues that the richest conversations about the uncomfortable aspects of the past happen because these histories have tangible remains, exerting a persistent hold on our imagination. Mullins not only demonstrates the emotional power of material things but also exposes how these negative feelings reflect deep-seated anxieties about twenty-first-century society.

Heritopia - World Heritage and Modernity (Hardcover): Jes Wienberg Heritopia - World Heritage and Modernity (Hardcover)
Jes Wienberg
R774 Discovery Miles 7 740 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Heritopia investigates the meanings of the past in the present, focusing on Abu Simbel in Egypt and other World Heritage sites. It explores and resolves a number of paradoxes: the past is impossible to preserve for eternity; all preservation implies change; preservation of one site normally means destruction of others; threats are important in the creation of heritage, but at the same time heritage may become a threat and threats can become heritage themselves; heritage stands in contrast to modernity and is at the same time part of it; both the increase and the decrease of modernity create heritage; and finally, heritage may be global and local at the same time. Heritopia will appeal to students and professionals in heritage studies and related subjects such as archaeology, history, ethnology and museology. An Archaeology of Innovation - Approaching Social and Technological Change in Human Society (Hardcover): Catherine J. Frieman An Archaeology of Innovation - Approaching Social and Technological Change in Human Society (Hardcover)
Catherine J. Frieman
R2,348 Discovery Miles 23 480 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

An archaeology of innovation is the first monograph-length investigation of innovation and the innovation process from an archaeological perspective. It interrogates the idea of innovation that permeates our popular media and our political and scientific discourse, setting this against the long-term perspective that only archaeology can offer. Case studies span the entire breadth of human history, from our earliest hominin ancestors to the contemporary world. The book argues that the present narrow focus on pushing the adoption of technical innovations ignores the complex interplay of social, technological and environmental systems that underlies truly innovative societies; the inherent connections between new technologies, technologists and social structure that give them meaning and make them valuable; and the significance and value of conservative social practices that lead to the frequent rejection of innovations. -- .

Public and Private in Ancient Mediterranean Law and Religion (Hardcover, Digital original): Clifford Ando, Joerg Rupke Public and Private in Ancient Mediterranean Law and Religion (Hardcover, Digital original)
Clifford Ando, Joerg Rupke
R3,971 Discovery Miles 39 710 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The public/private distinction is fundamental to modern theories of the family, religion and religious freedom, and state power, yet it has had different salience, and been understood differently, from place to place and time to time. The volume brings together essays from an international array of experts in law and religion, in order to examine the public/private distinction in comparative perspective. The essays focus on the cultures and religions of the ancient Mediterranean, in the formative periods of Greece and Rome and the religions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Particular attention is given to the private exercise of religion, the relation between public norms and private life, and the division between public and private space and the place of religion therein.

Shipwreck Narratives: Out of our Depth (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Michael Titlestad Shipwreck Narratives: Out of our Depth (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Michael Titlestad
R1,583 Discovery Miles 15 830 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Shipwreck Narratives: Out of Our Depth studies both the representation of shipwreck and the ways in which shipwrecks are used in creative, philosophical, and political works. The first part of the book examines historical shipwreck narratives published over a period of two centuries and their legacies. Michael Titlestad points to a range of narrative conventions, literary tropes and questions concerning representation and its limits in narratives about these historic shipwrecks. The second part engages novels, poems, films, artwork, and musical composition that grapple with shipwreck. Collectively the chapters suggest the spectacular productivity of shipwreck narrative; the multiple ways in which its concerns and logic have inspired anxious creativity in the last century. Titlestad recognizes in weaving in his personal experience that shipwreck-the destruction of form and the advent of disorder-could be seen not only as a corollary for his own neurological disorder, but also an abiding principle in tropology. This book describes how shipwreck has figured in texts (from historical narratives to fiction, film and music) as an analogue for emotional, psychological, and physical fragmentation.

Making Scenes - Global Perspectives on Scenes in Rock Art (Hardcover): Iain Davidson, April Nowell Making Scenes - Global Perspectives on Scenes in Rock Art (Hardcover)
Iain Davidson, April Nowell
R3,605 Discovery Miles 36 050 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Dating back to at least 50,000 years ago, rock art is one of the oldest forms of human symbolic expression. Geographically, it spans all the continents on Earth. Scenes are common in some rock art, and recent work suggests that there are some hints of expression that looks like some of the conventions of western scenic art. In this unique volume examining the nature of scenes in rock art, researchers examine what defines a scene, what are the necessary elements of a scene, and what can the evolutionary history tell us about storytelling, sequential memory, and cognitive evolution among ancient and living cultures?

Ancient Foodways - Integrative Approaches to Understanding Subsistence and Society (Hardcover): C. Margaret Scarry, Dale L.... Ancient Foodways - Integrative Approaches to Understanding Subsistence and Society (Hardcover)
C. Margaret Scarry, Dale L. Hutchinson, Benjamin S. Arbuckle
R2,334 Discovery Miles 23 340 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

How archaeology can shed light on past foodways and social worlds Through various case studies, Ancient Foodways illustrates how archaeologists can use bioarchaeology, zooarchaeology, archaeobotany, architecture, and other evidence to understand how food acquisition, preparation, and consumption intersect with economics, politics, and ritual. Spanning four continents and several millennia of human history, this volume is a comprehensive and contemporary survey of how archaeological data can be used to interpret past foodways and reconstruct past social worlds. This volume is organized around four major themes: feasting and politics; sacrifice, ritual, and ancestors; diet, landscape, and health; and integrative methods. Contributors weave together multiple threads of evidence relating to plants, animals, craft production, and human health and reconnect the material remnants with behaviors, practices, and meanings. The case studies show the varied and creative ways that multiple sources of evidence can be used to shed light on past foodways. Ancient Foodways demonstrates how environmental and cultural factors shaped past subsistence strategies and cooking practices and the role food played in shaping cultural identity and exchange networks, while also examining how food production methods can lead to environmental destruction and the detrimental role of dietary constraints on human health.

The Oldest Irish Tradition - A Window on the Iron Age (Paperback): Kenneth Hurlstone Jackson The Oldest Irish Tradition - A Window on the Iron Age (Paperback)
Kenneth Hurlstone Jackson
R627 Discovery Miles 6 270 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

K. H. Jackson's The Oldest Irish Tradition: A Window on the Iron Age was originally delivered as the Rede Lecture at the University of Cambridge in 1964. Jackson intended to show that the heroic literature of Ireland, the Ulster cycle of tales, derived from 'pre-historic' oral traditions which flourished before the introduction of Christianity in the fifth century. By closely examining this body of heroic narrative, Jackson attempted to illustrate how different aspects of the social structures, customs, ethos, and material culture in the tales could provide a picture of Ireland in the Early Iron Age.

Religion, Landscape and Material Culture in Pre-modern South Asia (Hardcover): Tilottama Mukherjee, Nupur Dasgupta Religion, Landscape and Material Culture in Pre-modern South Asia (Hardcover)
Tilottama Mukherjee, Nupur Dasgupta
R3,921 Discovery Miles 39 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book highlights emerging trends and new themes in South Asian history. It covers issues broadly related to religion, materiality and nature from differing perspectives and methods to offer a kaleidoscopic view of Indian history until the late eighteenth century. The essays in the volume focus on understanding questions of premodern religion, material culture processes and their spatial and environmental contexts through a study of networks of commodities and cultural and religious landscapes. From the early history of coastal regions such as Gujarat and Bengal to material networks of political culture, from temples and their connection with maritime trade to the importance of landscape in influencing temple-building, from regions considered peripheral to mainstream historiography to the development of religious sects, this collection of articles maps the diverse networks and connections across regions and time. The volume will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of history, archaeology, museum and heritage studies, religion, especially Hinduism, Sufism and Buddhism, and South Asian studies.

Spanning twenty-five years, this historic collection of writings shows Vaclav Havel's evolution from a modestly known playwright who had the courage to advise and criticize Czechoslovakia's leaders to a newly elected president whose first address to his fellow citizens begins, "I assume you did not propose me for this office so that I, too, would lie to you." Some of the pieces in Open Letters, such as "Dear Dr. Husak" and the essay "The Power of the Powerless," are by now almost legendary for their influence on a generation of Eastern European dissidents; others, such as some of Havel's prison correspondence and his private letter to Alexander Dubcek, appear in English for the first time. All of them bear the unmistakable imprint of Havel's intellectual rigor, moral conviction, and unassuming eloquence, while standing as important additions to the world's literature of conscience.

Ancient and Pre-modern Economies of the North American Pacific Northwest (Paperback): Anna Marie Prentiss Ancient and Pre-modern Economies of the North American Pacific Northwest (Paperback)
Anna Marie Prentiss
R500 Discovery Miles 5 000 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

This Element provides an overview of pre-modern and ancient economies of the Pacific Northwest region of North America. The region is widely known for its densely occupied semisedentary villages, intensive production economies, dramatic ritual life, and complex social relations. Scholars recognize significant diversity in the structure of subsistence and goods production in the service of domestic groups and institutional entities throughout the region. Here, domestic and institutional economies, specialization, distribution, economic development, and future directions are reviewed. The Element closes with thoughts on the processes of socio-economic change on the scales of houses, villages, and regional strategies.

Mortuary and Bioarchaeological Perspectives on Bronze Age Arabia (Hardcover): Kimberly D Williams, Lesley A Gregoricka Mortuary and Bioarchaeological Perspectives on Bronze Age Arabia (Hardcover)
Kimberly D Williams, Lesley A Gregoricka
R2,429 Discovery Miles 24 290 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This volume brings together experts in archaeology and bioarchaeology to examine continuity and change in ancient Arabian mortuary practices. While most previous investigations have been limited geographically to Egypt and the Levant, this volume focuses on the lesser-studied southeastern Arabian Peninsula, showing what death and burial can reveal about the lifestyles of the region's prehistoric communities. In case studies from Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Bahrain, contributors explore the transition from the earliest to the most complex mortuary monuments in the Bronze Age. They also look at broader changes in mortuary rituals from the Neolithic period through the late Pre-Islamic period, and they discuss sites that illustrate more nuanced shifts in burial practices between the Hafit and Umm an-Nar cultures. Specific topics include animal offerings, communal tombs, and ancient mobility and subsistence strategies. By using skeletal remains as a rich source of scientific data that complements studies of burial context, this volume represents an important turning point for mortuary research in the region. Its novel interdisciplinary and international perspective provides a synthesis of new ideas and interpretations that will guide future archaeological research in Arabia and beyond.

A Struggle for Heritage - Archaeology and Civil Rights in a Long Island Community (Hardcover, New edition): Christopher N.... A Struggle for Heritage - Archaeology and Civil Rights in a Long Island Community (Hardcover, New edition)
Christopher N. Matthews
R2,322 Discovery Miles 23 220 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Based on ten years of collaborative, community-based research, this book examines race and racism in a mixed-heritage Native American and African American community on Long Island's north shore. Through excavations of the Silas Tobias and Jacob and Hannah Hart houses in the village of Setauket, Christopher Matthews explores how the families who lived here struggled to survive and preserve their culture despite consistent efforts to marginalize and displace them over the course of more than 200 years. He discusses these forgotten people and the artifacts of their daily lives within the larger context of race, labor, and industrialization from the early nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century. A Struggle for Heritage draws on extensive archaeological, archival, and oral historical research and sets a remarkable standard for projects that engage a descendant community left out of the dominant narrative. Matthews demonstrates how archaeology can be an activist voice for a vulnerable population's civil rights as he brings attention to the continuous, gradual, and effective economic assault on people of color living in a traditional neighborhood amid gentrification. Providing examples of multiple approaches to documenting hidden histories and silenced pasts, this study is a model for public and professional efforts to include and support the preservation of historic communities of color. Adventures in Archaeology - The Wreck of the Orca II and Other Explorations (Paperback): P.J. Capelotti Adventures in Archaeology - The Wreck of the Orca II and Other Explorations (Paperback)
P.J. Capelotti
R788 Discovery Miles 7 880 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Discover a little-known world of archaeology Wrecked aircraft and abandoned airfields, old highway billboards and derelict boats, movie props, deserted mining operations. In this book, archaeologist P.J. Capelotti explores places and things that people don't typically think of as archaeological sites and artifacts, introducing readers to the most extreme fieldwork taking place today.Capelotti shows that even seemingly ordinary objects from the recent past hold secrets about the cultural history of humans. He investigates the site where a stunt copy of the Orca, the fishing boat used in the movie Jaws, was stripped to pieces by fans-a revelation of the ways humans relate to popular culture. He takes readers to abandoned base camps near the North Pole that are now used as destinations for Arctic tourism. Retelling the story of Thor Heyerdahl's research expedition across the Pacific Ocean on a balsa log raft, Capelotti shows how this episode of experimental archaeology revealed cultural connections between continents. And he doesn't stop at the limits of the planet. He discusses debris floating through outer space and equipment left behind on the surface of the moon, highlighting current efforts to preserve artifacts that exist beyond the Earth's atmosphere. These discarded materials, says Capelotti, help archaeologists piece together the sweeping story of human cultural expansion and exploitation. He explains how the unusual sites of shorelines, sea, air, and space represent the farthest reaches of human civilization. His enthusiasm will inspire readers to set out on their own to investigate the secret meanings of treasures hiding in plain sight.

R3,924 Discovery Miles 39 240 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book presents gender as a framework to offer unique insights into the sociocultural foundations of Buddhism. Moving away from dominant discourses that discuss women as a single monolithic, homogenous category – thus rendering them invisible within the broader religious discourse – this monograph examines their sustained role in the larger context of South Asian Buddhism and reaffirms their agency. It highlights the multiple roles played by women as patrons, practitioners, lay and monastic members and the like within Buddhism. The volume also investigates the individual experiences of the members, and their equations and relationships at different levels – with the Samgha at large with their own respective Bhikşu or Bhikşunī Samgha, with the laity, and with members of the same gender (both lay and monastic). It rereads, reconfigures, and reassesses historical data in order to arrive at a new understanding of Buddhism and the social matrix within which it developed and flourished. This new edition draws on recent archaeological data from ancient Buddhist sites in Sri Lanka and recently compiled ethnographic data from convents in Spiti valley in Himachal Pradesh, India. It assesses if the working model formulated for the identification of gendered structures at sites in India holds good for sites across South Asia and highlights the presence of women within the monastic circles in varied roles. Bringing together archaeological, epigraphic, art historical, literary as well as ethnographic data, this volume will be of interest to researchers and scholars of Buddhism, gender studies, ancient Indian history, religion, and South Asian studies.

Global Perspectives on Long Term Community Resource Management (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Ludomir R. Lozny, Thomas H. McGovern Global Perspectives on Long Term Community Resource Management (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Ludomir R. Lozny, Thomas H. McGovern
R2,688 Discovery Miles 26 880 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Communal-level resource management successes and failures comprise complex interactions that involve local, regional, and (increasingly) global scale political, economic, and environmental changes, shown to have recurring patterns and trajectories. The human past provides examples of long-term millennial and century-scale successes followed by undesired transitions ("collapse"), and rapid failure of collaborative management cooperation on the decadal scale. Management of scarce resources and common properties presents a critical challenge for planners attempting to avoid the "tragedy of the commons" in this century. Here, anthropologists, human ecologists, archaeologists, and environmental scientists discuss strategies for social well-being in the context of diminishing resources and increasing competition. The contributors in this volume revisit "tragedy of the commons" (also referred to as "drama" or "comedy" of the commons) and examine new data and theories to mitigate pressures and devise models for sustainable communal welfare and development. They present twelve archaeological, historic, and ethnographic cases of user-managed resources to demonstrate that very basic community-level participatory governance can be a successful strategy to manage short-term risk and benefits. The book connects past-present-future by presenting geographically and chronologically spaced out examples of communal-level governance strategies, and overviews of the current cutting-edge research. The lesson we learn from studying past responses to various ecological stresses is that we must not wait for a disaster to happen to react, but must react to mitigate conditions for emerging disasters.

Social DNA - Rethinking Our Evolutionary Past (Paperback): M.Kay Martin Social DNA - Rethinking Our Evolutionary Past (Paperback)
M.Kay Martin
R842 Discovery Miles 8 420 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

What set our ancestors off on a separate evolutionary trajectory was the ability to flex their reproductive and social strategies in response to changing environmental conditions. Exploring new cross-disciplinary research that links this capacity to critical changes in the organization of the primate brain, Social DNA presents a new synthesis of ideas on human social origins - challenging models that trace our beginnings to traits shaped by ancient hunting economies, or to genetic platforms shared with contemporary apes.
