Economics, Capitalism, and Corporations - Contradictions of Corporate Law, Economics, and the Theory of the Firm (Paperback):... Economics, Capitalism, and Corporations - Contradictions of Corporate Law, Economics, and the Theory of the Firm (Paperback)
Wm. Dennis Huber
R1,381 Discovery Miles 13 810 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is a continuation of Corporate Law and the Theory of the Firm: Reconstructing Corporations, Shareholders, Directors, Owners, and Investors. The author extends his analysis of contract law, property law, agency law, trust law, and corporate statutory law and applies that analysis to defy conventional concepts and theories in economics, finance, investment, and accounting and expose the artificial boundaries established by decades of research founded on indefensible assumptions and fallacious conclusions. Using the Humpty Dumpty principle, where words mean what the authors want them to mean, economists have created "strange new worlds" where contract law, property law, agency law, and corporate statutory law no longer apply. The author dismantles the theory of the firm by proving the theory of the firm wilfully and intentionally ignores fundamental contract law, property law, agency law, and corporate statutory law. Contrary to the theory of the firm, shareholders do not own corporations, directors are not agents of shareholders, and shareholders are not investors in corporations. The author proves that by property law and corporate law, capital is not privately owned by capitalists but by corporations. Entire economic and social systems have been constructed that have no basis in law. With the advent of publicly traded corporations, the capital is there, but both capitalists and capitalism have been rendered extinct. This book will appeal to researchers and graduate and upper-level undergraduate students in economics, finance, accounting, law, and sociology, as well as legal scholars, attorneys and accountants.

Industry Dynamics and Industry 4.0 - Drones for Remote Sensing Applications (Hardcover): Bernardino Quattrociocchi, Mario... Industry Dynamics and Industry 4.0 - Drones for Remote Sensing Applications (Hardcover)
Bernardino Quattrociocchi, Mario Calabrese, Francesco Mercuri, Francesca Iandolo
R1,654 Discovery Miles 16 540 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The so-called Fourth Industrial Revolution has prompted companies to adapt to a new business paradigm based on digital interconnection and the ability to respond quickly to the needs of consumers and users. These conditions are closely related to the advent of digital technologies that enable the real-time integration of devices and the control of production systems through technological platforms. Based on this logic, this volume aims to investigate the forms and methods being used by the company at present to confront the new business paradigm, commonly known as Industry 4.0, as well as the impact of new digital technologies on corporate evolutionary dynamics and related business models. More specifically, technological challenges will assess the impact of new technologies on productivity and investment in complementary resources-including human, organizational, and managerial capital-as well as the effects related to the introduction of Internet of Things (IoT)-based production processes. By following this approach, the focus subsequently shifts to drone technology, which is considered by many to be one of the most revolutionary Industry 4.0 technologies. In addition to investigating the history and potential applications of drones, many of which proved to be fundamental during the COVID-19 pandemic, the volume emphasizes the related ethical and social aspects such as the degree of knowledge regarding and the public acceptance of drones. The academic and professional approach of this volume allows it to serve as a guide for professionals, entrepreneurs, and academics with a particular interest in both digital innovation and the drone sector.

William H. Friedland
R1,393 Discovery Miles 13 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The emergence of a truly global economy in the 1970s and the need to understand the subsequent changes in economic structure provided the impetus for this synthesis of the sociology of agriculture. The book offers the first formulations of a political economy theory that explains the transnational social and production relations of food and agriculture. Drawing upon studies of labour, technology, the state and gender, the contributors put forward a basis for reassessing and restating the intellectual framework of agriculture.

Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM) of Hybrid Public-Private Partnership Projects - Contractual, Financing, Tax and Accounting... Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM) of Hybrid Public-Private Partnership Projects - Contractual, Financing, Tax and Accounting Discussions (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Abhinav Mittal, Puneet Agrawal, Shuchi Agrawal
R1,745 Discovery Miles 17 450 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book analyses several aspects of Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM), a form of hybrid public-private partnership (PPP) for development of roads sector in India. The book covers contractual, financing, taxation and accounting aspects of the HAM based PPP projects in India and provides a complete multi-dimensional view for readers. It is a comprehensive guide for multiple stakeholders involved in the development of infrastructure projects in developing economies across globe. The book is authored by professionals having hands-on advisory experience for HAM PPP projects in India. Given that these are long-term concession agreements (around 15 years), there are inherent complications and the authors have tried to provide clarity on practical issues. The book adopts a novel case-study approach. Based on detailed financial and commercial assumptions for a road project in India, the authors have used around 100 numerical illustrations to provide a quantitative and qualitative understanding for readers. Another highlight of the book is use of international case-studies to provide key learnings in areas of project preparation and structuring for such hybrid PPP models. The risk allocation framework is also contrasted with the HAM PPP model to highlight the key differences. The international case studies have been selected from transport and water sector to illustrate the applicability of hybrid PPPs across multiple sectors to support sustainable infrastructure development. The target audience for this book include private sector developers, government agencies, deal practitioners, advisors, researchers and academia . This book will also serve as a useful guide for commercial lenders, development finance institutions (DFIs) and institutional investors who are looking to finance such infrastructure projects in the long term.

Global Corporations and Sovereign Nations - Collision or Cooperation? (Hardcover): David J. Saari Global Corporations and Sovereign Nations - Collision or Cooperation? (Hardcover)
David J. Saari
R2,817 R2,551 Discovery Miles 25 510 Save R266 (9%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Should 185 sovereign nations allow 750 giant corporations to invest corporate profits as they alone see fit, or must public authority be mobilized to protect public interest by reining in these economic behemoths as they roam the global markets? By integrating many fields of knowledge and bringing to bear their disparate viewpoints, Dr. Saari makes his own viewpoint clear: The people did not elect investment bankers and CEOs, and neither group represents the people and the public interest. His book is a compelling argument for offering others a place at the table and for giving them a voice in deciding how billions in world currencies should be spent or invested. Comprehensive, multidisciplinary, empirical and analytical, Dr. Saari gives a coherent, reliable examination of the many pressure points between globalizing corporations and the nations in which they are embedded (and to which perhaps they should be indebted).

Dr. Saari's exploration takes into account a variety of eactors: popular national sovereignty, the variable definitions of capitalism, clashing views on the need for foreign trade, corporate practices like labor downsizing in home nations and their growing labor, tax, and regulatory problems. He makes three key points: (1) Regulated capitalism by nations is a viable public control system to shape the investment choices of giant corporations in such a way as to include the public interest; (2) Popular sovereignty in a democratic society directs all subunits of that society. Corporations must be separate from the state and subordinate to it; and (3) Most nation-states need to cooperate more fully to regulate, in a globally coordinated way, the global actions of giant coporations, especially with regard to decisions on direct foreign capital investment. Meticulously documented, with a comprehensive bibliography and two important appendices, Dr. Saari's book is essential for scholars and students in a wide range of academic disciplines, and for their colleagues in policy making capacities throughout government and the world's growing and ever more global corporations.

Dudley Docker - The Life and Times of a Trade Warrior (Paperback, Revised): R.P.T. Davenport-Hines Dudley Docker - The Life and Times of a Trade Warrior (Paperback, Revised)
R.P.T. Davenport-Hines
R1,196 Discovery Miles 11 960 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Dudley Docker (1862–1944) was one of the most powerful European businessmen of his era, through his secretiveness and taste for intrigue served to obscure his importance. This book is a feat of detection and historical reconstruction which establishes him as a figure of substantial influence. Like all good business history it transcends narrow departmental interests. It is a solid mixture of business, economic, political, social and even diplomatic history. It sketches the life and times of Docker: it describes the deals he fixed, recounts the rise and fall of the companies he directed, but also recreates the milieu in which he worked and portrays British socio-economic history from his standpoint. The book’s chief theme is the decline of British industrial hegemony since 1880.

Equity and Healthcare Reform in Developing Economies - The Case of Turkey (Paperback): Songul Cinaroglu Equity and Healthcare Reform in Developing Economies - The Case of Turkey (Paperback)
Songul Cinaroglu
R1,374 Discovery Miles 13 740 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Ensuring equity in healthcare is the main concern of health policymakers in order to provide a sustainable health system. This concern is more prominent in developing countries due to the scarcity of resources. This book provides a comprehensive analysis and discussion on the distributive pattern of out-of-pocket pharmaceutical expenditures under the health reforms in Turkey and makes comparisons with pharmerging countries. Turkey's health reforms began in 2003 to address shortcomings related to financial protection and to improve health outcomes and the quality of healthcare services. The primary motivation was to ensure equity in the distribution of health resources, and this transformation process led to profound changes in how these resources were used, and in health financing in general. However, there is a lack of knowledge regarding the long-term effect of health reforms on the distribution patterns of health expenditures and health service use. This book offers a thorough equity analysis of the health financing system, affected by this health transformation program. Index and curve approaches are used in the equity analysis of pharmaceutical expenditures. The book examines the long-term effects of health system regulations on the health spending characteristics of households and improves the current understanding of equity in this context. It includes extensive international comparisons of healthcare services across a range of developing countries and highlights the significance of ensuring equity for emerging economies. The author explores the existing evidence as well as future research directions and provides policy and planning advice for health policymakers to contribute to establishing a more equal health system design. Additionally, the book will be of interest to scholars and professionals in the fields of health economics, public health management and health financing.

Industry in the Countryside - Wealden Society in the Sixteenth Century (Paperback, Revised): Michael Zell Industry in the Countryside - Wealden Society in the Sixteenth Century (Paperback, Revised)
Michael Zell
R1,192 Discovery Miles 11 920 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Industry in the Countryside is a wide-ranging and readable study of the nature of manufacturing before the Industrial Revolution. It examines the widely-debated theory of 'proto-industrialisation', drawing on data from the Kentish Weald - an area which was already a centre of cottage industry in the Tudor era and was also the earliest rural manufacturing region to 'de-industrialise'. The book analyses the Wealden textile industry from its workforce to its industrialists and emphasises the ubiquity of dual employment among textile workers. It explores the local context of cottage industry, investigating the pattern of landholding and inheritance, the local farming regime, and the demographic background to rural industrialisation. Zell outlines what type of local economy became the site of this so-called 'proto-industry' and shows the impact of cottage industry on the people of such regions. He concludes by asking, is there anything in the 'proto-industrialisation' model?

Agile Project Management and Complexity - A Reappraisal (Hardcover): Czeslaw Mesjasz, Katarzyna Bartusik, Tomasz Malkus,... Agile Project Management and Complexity - A Reappraisal (Hardcover)
Czeslaw Mesjasz, Katarzyna Bartusik, Tomasz Malkus, Mariusz Soltysik
R4,477 Discovery Miles 44 770 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This research monograph presents an inter-disciplinary study of the impact, and current status, of applications of complexity-related concepts in the early stages of development of Agile Project Management (APM). The results serve as an introduction for exploring more profound relations between complexity-related ideas and APM in the future. The increasing complexity of software projects and their environment in the 1990s constituted the main determinants of the development of the family of methodological frameworks called Agile Project Management. Development of APM has been shaped by a broadly defined area of research called complexity science or complexity theory based on complex adaptive systems (CAS) and on their characteristics: Complexity, chaos, the edge of chaos, emerging properties, non-linearity, self-organization, etc. In the 21st century, due to the expansion of Agile beyond software development, the challenges deriving from the complexity of projects and the environment are even more urgent or compelling. Such phenomena demand more profound inter- and multi-disciplinary studies. This book examines the impact of applications of complexity-related ideas deriving from intuitive complexity and from complexity science in the early stages of development of the Agile methodological frameworks in project management and considers the current status of those applications. It questions the usefulness of those applications for the practice and theory of APM, and then proposes a conceptual framework for further theoretical studies and several ways of improvement and refinement of the Agile Project Management necessary to deal with broadly defined complexity in project management. Requiring a medium-level knowledge of complexity studies and knowledge of project management, this book is written for the research community studying the links between the various methodological frameworks included in APM and complexity-related ideas. It will also be interesting for studies of the impact of complexity on modern management, and for master's students on IT and management courses.

The Industrialisation of Soviet Russia Volume 4: Crisis and Progress in the Soviet Economy, 1931-1933 (Hardcover): R. W. Davies The Industrialisation of Soviet Russia Volume 4: Crisis and Progress in the Soviet Economy, 1931-1933 (Hardcover)
R. W. Davies
R4,984 Discovery Miles 49 840 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The profound economic crisis of 1931-33 undermined the process of industrialisation and the stability of the regime. In spite of feverish efforts to achieve the over ambitious first five-year plan, the great industrial projects lagged far behind schedule. These were years of inflation, economic disorder and of terrible famine in 1933. In response to the crisis, policies and systems changed significantly. Greater realism prevailed: more moderate plans, reduced investment, strict monetary controls, and more emphasis on economic incentives and the role of the market. The reforms failed to prevent the terrible famine of 1933, in which millions of peasants died. But the last months of 1933 saw the first signs of an industrial boom, the outcome of the huge investments of previous years. Using the previously secret archives of the Politburo and the Council of People's Commissars, the author shows how during these formative years the economic system acquired the shape which it retained until the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Reviews of previous volumes:; The Soviet Economy in Turmoil will be read avidly by all specialists on the Soviet economy; it should also be consulted by anyone

Industrial Policy in Britain 1945-1951 - Economic Planning, Nationalisation and the Labour Governments (Paperback, Revised):... Industrial Policy in Britain 1945-1951 - Economic Planning, Nationalisation and the Labour Governments (Paperback, Revised)
Martin Chick
R1,187 Discovery Miles 11 870 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is a detailed archive-based study of the economic planning of the Attlee governments, in which the author seeks to analyse the interaction between the decisions of central planners and the micro-economic effects of these decisions. Throughout the book, Martin Chick pays particular attention to the level, pattern and quality of fixed capital investment. At the same time, there is a continuous concern with the struggle between politicians, economists and industrialists over the mix of pricing mechanisms and administrative orders which were to be used in this period. This struggle permeated all discussions over matters such as the organisation of nationalised industries, the monopoly structure of nationalised industries, the allocation of resources and the promotion of higher productivity. The author also asks what impact, if any, economic planning had on the productivity performance of the UK economy.

Mergers and Acquisitions in the Energy Sector - The Impact of Synergy Disclosures on Shareholder Wealth and Operating... Mergers and Acquisitions in the Energy Sector - The Impact of Synergy Disclosures on Shareholder Wealth and Operating Performance (Hardcover, New edition)
Robert Fraunhoffer
R1,021 Discovery Miles 10 210 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

The study analyzes the impact of voluntary synergy disclosures at the M&A announcement on M&A transactions in the European as well as in the US energy sector. Thereby, not only is the capital market perspective considered on both a long- and short-term horizon, but the operational point of view is also taken into account. The author shows, while utilizing the event study methodology, that capital markets attribute increased returns to those M&A transactions which expect synergy gains for both the US and European market. As the post-merger accounting study confirms the realization of these announced synergy gains, it may be inferred that capital markets do not overreact and management boards are not overconfident in realizing merger gains.
