IMS'97, the fourth in the series of IFAC Workshops on Intelligent
Manufacturing Systems, was held in Seoul, Korea, on July 21-23,
1997. It was sponsored by the IFAC Technical Committee on Advanced
Manufacturing Technology and organized by the Engineering Research
Center for Advance Control and Instrumentation at Seoul National
University on behalf of the Institute of Control, Automation and
Systems Engineers in Korea. Rapid progress in the area of modern manufacturing is probably
most evident through the developments in intelligent manufacturing
systems. The same fast advancements have made the objective of
achieving a balanced technical program a challenging task. The
International Program Committee (IPC) wanted the Workshop to
include the most notable and recent results, but still to reflect
the versatility of maturing IMS technologies. In the Workshop, the importance of intelligence in modern manufacturing has gained considerable recognition from engineers and researchers due to today's unforeseen manufacturing environment change. This Workshop focused on the issue "intelligent manufacturing," especially, with two intriguing keynote speeches, a special invited session on the worldwide IMS Project and two tutorial programs as well as the 64 papers from 16 countries worldwide. We do hope that this event has provided the excellent opportunity to identify the future trends as well as exchange and learn ideas and experiences in intelligent manufacturing.

The coverage includes, but is not limited to, the complex mechanical and leakage behavior of gaskets and gasketed joints; instructions for choosing proper gaskets based on hands-on experience and a computer-based selection approach; evaluation of mehods for testing gaskets; comparisons of flanged joint design rules for the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code using the Taylor Forge form; and more.
Computer systems have become an integral part of most companies. The newest of these is Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), a technology that provides on-line application software that companies rely on to manage their manufacturing processes. Applying Manufacturing Execution Systems is the book for everyone who has the responsibility of improving their company's manufacturing results. It shows how the current conditions on the plant floor can be optimized to improve production output using an integrated MES.
Emphasizing the importance of understanding and reducing process variation to achieve quality manufacturing performance, this work establishes how statistical process control (SPC) provides powerful tools for measuring and regulating manufacturing processes. It presents information derived from time-tested applications of SPC techniques at on-site process situations in manufacturing. The fouling of heat exchangers, reactors and catalysts remains one of the most urgent problems facing the process industries. Over the past ten years there has been limited research and investigation into the underlying mechanisms which give rise to this problem. For convenience, particularly in heat exchanger technology, the mechanisms involved have been subdivided into different subject areas. It is often the situation that individuals or groups of workers have concentra ted efforts in one or two of these specialist areas and there is a need to integrate the ideas across the whole spectrum of the subject. In addition, topics such as adhesion and surface phenomena have not been properly taken into account up till now in the assessment of the fouling processes. For this reason it was considered essential that the recognised experts from around the world, who are actively concerned with research, development and design in the fieId, should meet and exchange ideas and experience. Such a meeting was held at Alvor, Portugal, in May 1987, sponsored by the NATO Advanced St dy Institutes Programme. In order to obtain a common basis for the work of the Advanced Study Institute, the whole technological field was reviewed right from the basic concepts to the frontiers of present knowledge. Each invited contributor was asked to make an overall presentation covering his or her area of expertise."
This text covers the proceedings of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop which is devoted to the technical aspects of advanced interconnections and microassembly and also includes papers on the education issues needed to prepare students for work in these areas. The future direction that such technologies may take is also dealt with. The basic issue is that the miniaturization of electronic systems continues, and performance must continue to improve. The newest packages are often based on the selection of an appropriate interconnection method. Advances in chip-scale, chip-flip, and direct chip attachments are described. Although wire bonding currently dominates the market, the consensus is that flip chip interconnection will rapidly increase its market share. Tape automated bonding is also discussed, primarily for special applications. Solder metallurgy and flip chip production technology receive attention in several papers. Solderability, reliability and fatigue of the joints are modelled, and mechanical stresses resulting from temperature cycling are reported. Multichip module and thick-film hybrid substrate interconnections are reported in several papers. These include thick and thin film metals, as well as low temperature polymer inks. Several papers describe diffusion and other metallurgical interactions in thick film surfaces.

The world progresses toward Industry 4.0, and manufacturers are challenged to successfully navigate this unique digital journey. To some, digitalization is a golden opportunity; to others, it is a necessary evil. But to optimist and pessimist alike, there is a widespread puzzlement over the practical details of digitalization. To many manufacturers, digital transformation is a vague and confusing concept they nevertheless must grapple with in order to survive the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The proliferation of digital manufacturing technologies adds to the confusion, leaving many manufacturers perplexed and unprepared, with little real insight into how emerging technologies can help them sustain a competitive edge in their markets. This book effectively conveys Siemens's knowledge and experience through a concept called "Smart Digital Manufacturing," a stepwise approach to realizing the promise of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The Smart Digital Manufacturing roadmap provides guidance and enables low-risk, high-reward adoption of new manufacturing software technologies through a series of tipping-point investment decisions that result in optimized manufacturing performance. The book provides readers with a clear understanding of what digital technology has to offer them, and how and when to invest in these essential components of tomorrow's factories. Rene Wolf is Senior Vice President of Manufacturing Operations Management Software for Siemens Digital Industries Software, a business unit of the Siemens Digital Factory Division. Raffaello Lepratti is Vice President of Business Development and Marketing for Siemens Digital Industries Software.
