Sven Teske
R1,594 Discovery Miles 15 940 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This open access book is designed as a continuation of the editor's 2019 book Achieving the Paris Climate Agreement Goals. This volume provides an in-depth analysis of industry sectors globally, and its purpose is to present emission reduction targets in 5-year steps (2025 to 2050) for the main twelve finance sectors per the Global Industry Classification System. This scientific analysis aims to support the United Nations Principles for Responsible Investment initiative to give sustainability guidance for the global finance industry. The industry sector pathways presented here are based on the latest global and regional 100% renewable energy and non-energy greenhouse gas Representative Concentration Pathways in order to keep climate change significantly under +1.5 C and thereby achieve the Paris Climate Agreement goals. The heart of this book is three chapters presenting the results of industry scenario modelling. These chapters cover twelve industry and service sectors as well as transportation and buildings. The specific energy demand and specific emissions are presented based on the emission accounting concept of "Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3" emission pathways. This methodology has been developed to measure the climate and sustainability index for companies, and this research project expands the methodology to apply it to entire industry sectors. The results presented here are the first overall industry assessments under Scope 1, 2 and 3 from 2020 through 2050. The base for the energy pathways is the scenarios scenarios published in the previous volume. The nonenergy GHG emission scenarios, broken down to agriculture & forestry and industry, are detailed and include all major greenhouse gases and aerosols. The final section of the book presents the main conclusions of the industry pathway development work and recommendations for the finance industry and policy makers. Additionally, future qualitative future investment requirements in specific technologies and measures are presented.

Energy Policy Advancement - Climate Change Mitigation and International Environmental Justice (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022): Dmitry... Energy Policy Advancement - Climate Change Mitigation and International Environmental Justice (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Dmitry Kurochkin, Martha J. Crawford, Elena V Shabliy
R3,126 Discovery Miles 31 260 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book states that sustainable development has become an influential discourse worldwide. Climate change is not only an urgent problem, but it is also a fundamental spiritual question concerning social justice and sustainable peace development as well as solidarity among people of various religious backgrounds and different countries. Thus, this global problem must be faced and recognized for future actions and strategies. However, the politics of fear must be replaced with a culture of peace, hope, and compassion, and this urgent problem must be faced with an optimistic attitude and a certain degree of preparedness. Climate change is evident in many forms, such as, for example, the most obvious-recent weather fluctuations that happen around the world. Floods, droughts, and hurricanes are those visible signs of climate change. Human-caused climate change is projected to greatly impact marine, freshwater, and terrestrial life. Temperatures in Alaska and the Arctic have increased over the last 50 years at a rate more than twice as fast as the global average temperature. Poor people are vulnerable to man-made climate change and respond rapidly to its impacts. Diverse knowledge of and approaches to climate change help understand this growing problem; global average air temperature has increased in the recent past by approximately 1.0 DegreesC (1.8 DegreesF). According to the Climate Science Special Report, the last several years have been record-breaking, and the period of 1901-2016 is the warmest. Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are still rising, with damaging effects on the Earth's climate. At the moment, the concentration of CO2 is higher than at any point in time-at least the past 800,000 years. However, carbon dioxide (CO2) is not the only GHG that impacts human-induced climate change.

Advanced Control Methodologies For Power Converter Systems (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022): Wensheng Luo, Yunfei Yin, Xiangyu Shao,... Advanced Control Methodologies For Power Converter Systems (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Wensheng Luo, Yunfei Yin, Xiangyu Shao, Jianxing Liu, Ligang Wu
R3,988 Discovery Miles 39 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book aims to present some advanced control methodologies for power converters. Power electronic converters have become indispensable devices for plenty of industrial applications over the last decades. Composed by controllable power switches, they can be controlled by effective strategies to achieve desirable transient response and steady-state performance, to ensure the stability, reliability and safety of the system. The most popular control strategy of power converters is the linear proportional-integral-derivative series control which is adopted as industry standard. However, when there exist parameter changes, nonlinearities and load disturbances in the system, the performance of the controller will be significantly degraded. To overcome this problem, many advanced control methodologies and techniques have been developed to improve the converter performance. This book presents the research work on some advanced control methodologies for several types of power converters, including three-phase two-level AC/DC power converter, three-phase NPC AC/DC power converter, and DC/DC buck converter. The effectiveness and advantage of the proposed control strategies are verified via simulations and experiments. The content of this book can be divided into two parts. The first part focuses on disturbance observer-based control methods for power converters under investigation. The second part investigates intelligent control methods. These methodologies provide a framework for controller design, observer design, stability and performance analysis for the considered power converter systems.

Thermo-Mechanical Solar Power Plants - Eurelios, the 1MWel Experimental Solar Thermal Electrical Power Plant in the European... Thermo-Mechanical Solar Power Plants - Eurelios, the 1MWel Experimental Solar Thermal Electrical Power Plant in the European Community. Final Report of the Construction of Eurelios, Assembled by the Industrial Consortium for the IESPP (Hardcover, 1984 ed.)
J. Gretz, A. Strub, Willeke Palz
R2,710 Discovery Miles 27 100 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In this book, the Commission of the European Communities presents the proceedings of the Workshop on Solar Central Receiver Projects, held in Varese, I taly, in June 1984. This Workshop was supported by all operators of solar tower power plants around the world and, as a result, these proceedings provide a comprehensive overview of the technology in its current state of development. The Workshop was organized by the Commission of the European Communities in the frame of the second solar energy R&D programme under the responsibility of its Di rectorate-General (X 11) for Science, Research and Development in Brussels. The meeting place, Varese, in Italy, was selected because of its neighbourhood to the Ispra Establishment of the Commission's Joint Research Centre who cooperated in the organization of the Workshop. Solar power plants of the central receiving type have two conflicting characteristics: they employ very simple and classical components but as a system they are of tremendous complexity. It was the hope for rapid progress by using available components that guided the decisions taken in the late seventies to build six large experimental plants: four in Europe, one in Japan and one in the United States. At that time, this technology enjoyed high priority in solar energy R&D around the world. Once the plants were completed, however, it became clear that the technical complexity combined with difficult meteorological conditions at most construction sites made the yields less favourable than anticipated.

Topical Themes in Energy and Resources - A Cross-Disciplinary Education and Training Program for Environmental Leaders... Topical Themes in Energy and Resources - A Cross-Disciplinary Education and Training Program for Environmental Leaders (Hardcover, 2015 ed.)
Yasumitsu Tanaka, Michael Norton, Yu-You Li
R3,744 Discovery Miles 37 440 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book combines issues several critical ones in the energy field (low-energy technologies, renewable energies such as the hydrogen economy, and geothermal energy). Moving towards a more sustainable world requires a complete revolution in the way we manage energy and resources. However, from an academic perspective, this theme is so broad that most educators and researchers tend to focus on just one aspect, and maintaining the broad viewpoint which is necessary for making strategic judgments becomes difficult. Tohoku University addressed this challenge when developing a new education and training program for environmental leaders and brought together the extensive range of expertise available in specific fields into one special course which forms the basis of this book. Now in one volume, both students and educators can be brought up to date on a wide range of critical issues currently being addressed in the field of energy and resources. Chapters on resources include availability (for instance, rare earth metals), extraction and recycling of metals and plastics, and technological solutions to specific waste-disposal problems. In addition, broader strategic issues such as limits to growth and the interaction between the economic system and environmental issues are addressed. Even though each chapter provides topical data and knowledge from disparate and specialized fields, the book is written at a level that is readily understandable by students from all scientific, engineering, and humanities fields.

Intelligent Data Analytics for Power and Energy Systems (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022): Hasmat Malik, Md. Waseem Ahmad, D.P. Kothari Intelligent Data Analytics for Power and Energy Systems (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Hasmat Malik, Md. Waseem Ahmad, D.P. Kothari
R4,817 Discovery Miles 48 170 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book brings together state-of-the-art advances in intelligent data analytics as driver of the future evolution of PaE systems. In the modern power and energy (PaE) domain, the increasing penetration of renewable energy sources (RES) and the consequent empowerment of consumers as a central and active solution to deal with the generation and development variability are driving the PaE system towards a historic paradigm shift. The small-scale, diversity, and especially the number of new players involved in the PaE system potentiate a significant growth of generated data. Moreover, advances in communication (between IoT devices and M2M: machine to machine, man to machine, etc.) and digitalization hugely increased the volume of data that results from PaE components, installations, and systems operation. This data is becoming more and more important for PaE systems operation, maintenance, planning, and scheduling with relevant impact on all involved entities, from producers, consumer,s and aggregators to market and system operators. However, although the PaE community is fully aware of the intrinsic value of those data, the methods to deal with it still necessitate substantial enhancements, development and research. Intelligent data analytics is thereby playing a fundamental role in this domain, by enabling stakeholders to expand their decision-making method and achieve the awareness on the PaE environment. The editors also included demonstrated codes for presented problems for better understanding for beginners.

Simulation Tools and Methods for Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Radial Inflow Turbine - Development and Application on... Simulation Tools and Methods for Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Radial Inflow Turbine - Development and Application on Open-Source Code (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Jianhui Qi
R3,984 Discovery Miles 39 840 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

To protect the Earth, China has launched its target of peaking carbon dioxide emissions by 2030, and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060 , which greatly encourages the use and development of renewable energy. Supercritical CO2 power cycle is a promising technology and the radial inflow turbine is the most important component of it, whose design and optimisation are considered as great challenges. This book introduces simulation tools and methods for supercritical CO2 radial inflow turbine, including a high fidelity quasi-one-dimensional design procedure, a non-ideal compressible fluid dynamics Riemann solver within open-source CFD software OpenFOAM framework, and a multi-objective Nelder-Mead geometry optimiser. Enhanced one-dimensional loss models are presented for providing a new insight towards the preliminary design of the supercritical CO2 radial inflow turbine. Since the flow phenomena within the blade channels are complex, involving fluid flow, shock wave transmission and boundary layer separation, only employing the ideal gas model is inadequate to predict the performance of the turbine. Thus, a non-ideal compressible fluid dynamics Riemann solver based on OpenFOAM library is developed. This book addresses the issues related to the turbine design and blade optimization and provides leading techniques. Hence, this book is of great value for the readers working on the supercritical CO2 radial inflow turbine and understanding the knowledge of CFD and turbomachinery.

Economics and Policy of Energy and Environmental Sustainability (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022): Narendra N. Dalei, Anshuman Gupta Economics and Policy of Energy and Environmental Sustainability (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Narendra N. Dalei, Anshuman Gupta
R4,002 Discovery Miles 40 020 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores the linkages among economic development, energy, and environment. An increase in economic activity is correlated with a higher level of energy consumption, which in turn leads to an increase in environmental pollution. Due to the influence of greenhouse gases, the higher the concentration of pollutants in the atmosphere, the higher the temperature, which ultimately leads to climate change. Under these imminent dangers, the role of economic and energy efficiency policies becomes important for ecological sustainability. The present policies, however, in various instances, have failed to address these issues. Hence, this book embarks not only to suggest modifications to improve the efficacy of the current policies but also to recommend to the policymakers, new and more effective policies for their respective countries. The book is bifurcated into two sections: The Economics and Policy of Sustainable Energy section discusses renewable energy policy responses to observed Impact of climate change using DPSIR Framework; the energy utilization strategies for transportation and commercial activities of Charland Bangladesh; the relationship of market globalization with the Indian energy sector; the socioecological effects of globalization from an energy perspective brought to a local standpoint; the seasonal disaster-induced energy consumption strategies of the char-dwellers of Bangladesh with respect to their domestic chores and agricultural activities; trends in GDP growth and energy usage in India; cross-border trade of electricity; and the events that the oil and gas industry has already faced and possible strategies it can adopt to overcome the recession caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
