This laboratory manual is carefully coordinated to the text Electronic Devices, Tenth edition, Global edition, by Thomas L. Floyd. The seventeen experiments correspond to the chapters in the text (except the first experiment references Chapters 1 and the first part of Chapter 2). All of the experiments are subdivided into two or three "Parts." With one exception (Experiment 12-B), the Parts for the all experiments are completely independent of each other. The instructor can assign any or all Parts of these experiments, and in any order. This format provides flexibility depending on the schedule, laboratory time available, and course objectives. In addition, experiments 12 through 16 provide two options for experiments. These five experiments are divided into two major sections identified as A or B. The A experiments continue with the format of previous experiments; they are constructed with discrete components on standard protoboards as used in most electronic teaching laboratories. The A experiments can be assigned in programs where traditional devices are emphasized. Each B experiment has a similar format to the corresponding A experiment, but uses a programmable Analog Signal Processor (ASP) that is controlled by (free) Computer Aided Design (CAD) software from the Anadigm company (www.anadigm.com). These experiments support the Programmable Analog Design feature in the textbook. The B experiments are also subdivided into independent Parts, but Experiment 12-B, Part 1, is a software tutorial and should be performed before any other B experiments. This is an excellent way to introduce the ASP technology because no other hardware is required other than a computer running the downloaded software. In addition to Experiment 12-B, the first 13 steps of Experiment 15-B, Part 2, are also tutorial in nature for the AnadigmFilter program. This is an amazing active filter design tool that is easy to learn and is included with the AnadigmDesigner2 (AD2) CAD software. The ASP is part of a Programmable Analog Module (PAM) circuit board from the Servenger company (www.servenger.com) that interfaces to a personal computer. The PAM is controlled by the AD2 CAD software from the Anadigm company website. Except for Experiment 12-B, Part 1, it is assumed that the PAM is connected to the PC and AnadigmDesigner2 is running. Experiment 16-B, Part 3, also requires a spreadsheet program such as Microsoft (R) Excel (R). The PAM is described in detail in the Quick Start Guide (Appendix B). Instructors may choose to mix A and B experiments with no loss in continuity, depending on course objectives and time. We recommend that Experiment 12-B,Part 1, be assigned if you want students to have an introduction to the ASP without requiring a hardware purchase. A text feature is the Device Application (DA) at the end of most chapters. All of the DAs have a related laboratory exercise using a similar circuit that is sometimes simplified to make laboratory time as efficient as possible. The same text icon identifies the related DA exercise in the lab manual. One issue is the trend of industry to smaller surface-mount devices, which are very difficult to work with and are not practical for most lab work. For example, almost all varactors are supplied as surface mount devices now. In reviewing each experiment, we have found components that can illustrate the device function with a traditional one. The traditional through-hole MV2109 varactor is listed as obsolete, but will be available for the foreseeable future from Electronix Express (www.elexp.com), so it is called out in Experiment 3. All components are available from Electronix Express (www.elexp.com) as a kit of parts (see list in Appendix A). The format for each experiment has not changed from the last edition and is as follows: * Introduction: A brief discussion about the experiment and comments about each of the independent Parts that follow. * Reading: Reading assignment in the Floyd text related to the experiment. * Key Objectives: A statement specific to each Part of the experiment of what the student should be able to do. * Components Needed: A list components and small items required for each Part but not including the equipment found at a typical lab station. Particular care has been exercised to select materials that are readily available and reusable, keeping cost at a minimum. * Parts: There are two or three independent parts to each experiment. Needed tables, graphs, and figures are positioned close to the first referenced location to avoid confusion. Step numbering starts fresh with each Part, but figures and tables are numbered sequentially for the entire experiment to avoid multiple figures with the same number. Conclusion: At the end of each Part, space is provided for a written conclusion. Questions: Each Part includes several questions that require the student to draw upon the laboratory work and check his or her understanding of the concepts. Troubleshooting questions are frequently presented. * Multisim Simulation: At the end of each A experiment (except #1), one or more circuits are simulated in a Multisim computer simulation. New Multisim troubleshooting problems have been added to this edition. Multisim troubleshooting files are identified with the suffix f1, f2, etc., in the file name (standing for fault1, fault2, etc.). Other files, with nf as the suffix include demonstrations or practice using instruments such as the Bode Plotter and the Spectrum Analyzer. A special icon is shown with all figures that are related to the Multisim simulation. Multisim files are found on the website: www.pearsonglobaledition.com/Floyd. Microsoft PowerPoint (R) slides are available at no cost to instructors for all experiments. The slides reinforce the experiments with troubleshooting questions and a related problem and are available on the instructor's resource site. Each laboratory station should contain a dual-variable regulated power supply, a function generator, a multimeter, and a dual-channel oscilloscope. A list of all required materials is given in Appendix A along with information on acquiring the PAM. As mentioned, components are also available as a kit from Electronix Express; the kit number is 32DBEDFL10.

The protection which is installed on an industrial power system is likely to be subjected to more difficult conditions than the protection on any other kind of power system. Starting with the many simple devices which are employed and covering the whole area of industrial power system protection, this book aims to help achieve a thorough understanding of the protection necessary. Vital aspects such as the modern cartridge fuse, types of
relays, and the role of the current transformer are covered and the
widely used inverse definite-minimum time overcurrent relay, the
theory of the Merz-Price protection system and the development of
the high-impedance relay system are critically examined. This new
edition has come about in response to the dramatic change from the
use of electro-magnetic relays to electronic and micro-processor
relays which figure in practically all new installations.
Therefore, although the theory and usage are the same, the
application can be much improved owing to the increased range and
accuracy and the added facilities provided with the modern relays.
This book reflects the change and explains the technical
advantages.

This book focuses on near-zero energy buildings (NZEBs), smart communities and microgrids. In this context, demand response (DR) is associated with significant environmental and economic benefits when looking at how electricity grids, communities and buildings can operate optimally. In DR, the consumer becomes a prosumer with an important active role in the exchange of energy on an hourly basis. DR is gradually gaining ground with respect to the reduction of peak loads, grid balancing and dealing with the volatility of renewable energy sources (RES). This transition calls for high environmental awareness and new tools or services that will improve the dynamic as well as secure multidirectional exchange of energy and data. Overall, DR is identified as an important field for technological and market innovations aligned with climate change mitigation policies and the transition to sustainable smart grids in the foreseeable future. Smart Buildings, Smart Communities and Demand Response provides an insight into various intrinsic aspects of DR potential, at the building and the community level.
Intelligent agents are one of the most promising business tools in our information rich world. An intelligent agent consists of a software system capable of performing intelligent tasks within a dynamic and unpredictable environment. They can be characterised by various attributes including: autonomous, adaptive, collaborative, communicative, mobile, and reactive. Many problems are not well defined and the information needed to make decisions is not available. These problems are not easy to solve using conventional computing approaches. Here, the intelligent agent paradigm may play a major role in helping to solve these problems. This book, written for application researchers, covers a broad selection of research results that demonstrate, in an authoritative and clear manner, the applications of agents within our information society.

The Complete, Modern Guide to Developing Well-Performing Signal Processing Algorithms In Fundamentals of Statistical Signal Processing, Volume III: Practical Algorithm Development, author Steven M. Kay shows how to convert theories of statistical signal processing estimation and detection into software algorithms that can be implemented on digital computers. This final volume of Kay's three-volume guide builds on the comprehensive theoretical coverage in the first two volumes. Here, Kay helps readers develop strong intuition and expertise in designing well-performing algorithms that solve real-world problems. Kay begins by reviewing methodologies for developing signal processing algorithms, including mathematical modeling, computer simulation, and performance evaluation. He links concepts to practice by presenting useful analytical results and implementations for design, evaluation, and testing. Next, he highlights specific algorithms that have "stood the test of time," offers realistic examples from several key application areas, and introduces useful extensions. Finally, he guides readers through translating mathematical algorithms into MATLAB (R) code and verifying solutions. Topics covered include Step-by-step approach to the design of algorithms Comparing and choosing signal and noise models Performance evaluation, metrics, tradeoffs, testing, and documentation Optimal approaches using the "big theorems" Algorithms for estimation, detection, and spectral estimation Complete case studies: Radar Doppler center frequency estimation, magnetic signal detection, and heart rate monitoring Exercises are presented throughout, with full solutions, and executable MATLAB code that implements all the algorithms is available for download. This new volume is invaluable to engineers, scientists, and advanced students in every discipline that relies on signal processing; researchers will especially appreciate its timely overview of the state of the practical art. Volume III complements Dr. Kay's Fundamentals of Statistical Signal Processing, Volume I: Estimation Theory (Prentice Hall, 1993; ISBN-13: 978-0-13-345711-7), and Volume II: Detection Theory (Prentice Hall, 1998; ISBN-13: 978-0-13-504135-2).
Research and development on optical wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) networks have matured considerably. While optics and electronics should be used appropriately for transmission and switching hardware, note that "intelligence'' in any network comes from "software, '' for network control, management, signaling, traffic engineering, network planning, etc.The role of software in creating powerful network architectures for optical WDM networks is emphasized. Optical WDM Networks is a textbook for graduate level courses. Its focus is on the networking aspects of optical networking, but it also includes coverage of physical layers in optical networks. The author introduces WDM and its enabling technologies and discusses WDM local, access, metro, and long-haul network architectures. Each chapter is self-contained, has problems at the end of each chapter, and the material is organized for self study as well as classroom use. The material is the most recent and timely in capturing the state-of-the-art in the fast-moving field of optical WDM networking.
This book contains a number of problems with signal detection theory. A generalized observation model for signal detection problems, is presented. The model includes several interesting and common special cases such as those describing additive noise, multiplicative noise, and signal-dependent noise. This model can also describe composite signals in addition to the usual known (deterministic) signals and random (stochastic) signals. Locally optimum (LO) and locally optimum rank (LOR) detectors for known and random signals in the model, are discussed, and original results are obtained. Other approaches to detection of signals also are discussed.
The theory of finite fields, whose origins can be traced back to the works of Gauss and Galois, has played a part in various branches of mathematics, in recent years there has been a resurgence of interest in finite fields, and this is partly due to important applications in coding theory and cryptography. Applications of Finite Fields introduces some of these recent developments. This book focuses attention on some specific recent developments in the theory and applications of finite fields. While the topics selected are treated in some depth, Applications of Finite Fields does not attempt to be encyclopedic. Among the topics studied are different methods of representing the elements of a finite field (including normal bases and optimal normal bases), algorithms for factoring polynomials over finite fields, methods for constructing irreducible polynomials, the discrete logarithm problem and its implications to cryptography, the use of elliptic curves in constructing public key cryptosystems, and the uses of algebraic geometry in constructing good error-correcting codes. This book is developed from a seminar held at the University of Waterloo. The purpose of the seminar was to bridge the knowledge of the participants whose expertise and interests ranged from the purely theoretical to the applied. As a result, this book will be of interest to a wide range of students, researchers and practitioners in the disciplines of computer science, engineering and mathematics. Applications of Finite Fields is an excellent reference and may be used as a text for a course on the subject.
Magnetic multilayers is a rapidly growing and multidisciplinary field of research. "Providing a unique, empirically based perspective on the past and future development of globalization as a long-term process emerging in different parts of the world, this book puts current changes in a historical context in a systematic fashion, unpacking the global political, economic, social, and cultural implications of this change. It traces the resemblance of past commercial networks with emerging digital networks and contrasts them with industrial production systems." -- Book jacket.
In electronics manufacture, the expanding range of products and the smaller-and-smaller scale of increasingly integrated components is producing a trend towards complex and fault-susceptible processes. This fact, coupled with shorter production times and the importance of quality assurance necessitates that process technology be more adaptable and open to new procedures than ever before. Electronics Process Technology is a systemised presentation of new techniques and methods in electronics manufacture. Planning, preparation and execution are interlinked to achieve robust manufacturing processes that realise optimum quality, costs and quantities in the final product. Topics covered include:
The authors co-ordinate these disparate subjects into a coherent whole that will be of great interest both to manufacturing engineers working in electronics production and to academics studying the manufacturing process. The book will also be a valuable reference for students of electronics manufacturing technology.
