Coulomb Screening by Mobile Charges - Applications to Materials Science, Chemistry, and Biology (Hardcover, 1999 ed.): Jean-N.... Coulomb Screening by Mobile Charges - Applications to Materials Science, Chemistry, and Biology (Hardcover, 1999 ed.)
Jean-N. Chazalviel
R2,848 Discovery Miles 28 480 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The idea of writing this book orIgmates from a suggestion of Bernard Sapoval: "Why don't you write it?" he asked. "Coulomb screening is a problem that everybody encounters in many different contexts, and there is no textbook that gathers the various aspects ofthe subject. " The content ofthe book, in a shorter form, was first taught for four years as a course in Dipl6me d'Etudes Approfondies Sciences des Materiaux, headed by Prof. J. -F. Petroff, at Paris VI University. The present extended version was written after discussions with Alia Margolina-Litvin. An essential feature of screening is its role in many different scientific areas. For that reason, the book is intended for use by a multidisciplinary readership. Reading it requires only a basic knowledge ofelectromagnetism, elementary quantum mechanics, and thermal physics. The spirit of the pre sentation is "simplicity first": new concepts (e. g. , dielectric function) are first introduced in their most elementary form and are progressively extended to more generality. The book stays at a basic level, and additional abstract developments that might have been included have been either omitted, rele gated to an appendix, or summarized in a qualitative manner. Apart from these restrictions, care has been taken to keep the presentation as rigorous as possible: the topics addressed are dealt with quantitatively, the results are given in mathematical form, and the interested reader should be able to fol low the algebra all the way through.

Uncertain Judgements - Eliciting Experts' Probabilities (Hardcover): A. O'Hagan Uncertain Judgements - Eliciting Experts' Probabilities (Hardcover)
A. O'Hagan
R1,850 Discovery Miles 18 500 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Elicitation is the process of extracting expert knowledge about some unknown quantity or quantities, and formulating that information as a probability distribution. Elicitation is important in situations, such as modelling the safety of nuclear installations or assessing the risk of terrorist attacks, where expert knowledge is essentially the only source of good information. It also plays a major role in other contexts by augmenting scarce observational data, through the use of Bayesian statistical methods. However, elicitation is not a simple task, and practitioners need to be aware of a wide range of research findings in order to elicit expert judgements accurately and reliably. "Uncertain Judgements" introduces the area, before guiding the reader through the study of appropriate elicitation methods, illustrated by a variety of multi-disciplinary examples.

This is achieved by:

Presenting a methodological framework for the elicitation of expert knowledge incorporating findings from both statistical and psychological research. Detailing techniques for the elicitation of a wide range of standard distributions, appropriate to the most common types of quantities. Providing a comprehensive review of the available literature and pointing to the best practice methods and future research needs. Using examples from many disciplines, including statistics, psychology, engineering and health sciences. Including an extensive glossary of statistical and psychological terms.

An ideal source and guide for statisticians and psychologists with interests in expert judgement or practical applications of Bayesian analysis, "Uncertain Judgements" will also benefit decision-makers, risk analysts, engineers and researchers in the medical and social sciences.

Electric Power Engineering (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 1998): Olle Elgerd, Patrick van der Puije Electric Power Engineering (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 1998)
Olle Elgerd, Patrick van der Puije
R4,264 Discovery Miles 42 640 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book is about electric energy: its generation, its transmission from the point of generation to where it is required, and its transformation into required forms. To achieve this end, a number of devices are essential-such as generators, trans mission lines, transformers, and electric motors. We discuss the design, construc tion, and operating characteristics of the electric devices used in the transformation to and from electric energy. This text is designed to be used in a one-semester course in electric energy con version at the second-year level of the Bachelor of Engineering course. It is assumed that the student is familiar with the laws of thermodynamics and has taken a course in basic circuit analysis, including the application of phasors. We begin with a discussion of how humankind has successfully harnessed the energy of wind, water, the sun, biomass, animals, geothermal sources, fossils, and nuclear fission to make its life comfortable. Some of the consequences of this activity on the environment are examined. In Chapter 2, we review the basic physics of energy and its conversion. This may be, to some extent, a repetition of knowledge gained in high-school and first year university courses. However, we believe that such review is necessary to establish a suitable base from which to launch the subject of electric energy con version."

Engineering Databases - Connecting Islands of Automation Through Databases (Hardcover, 1990 ed.): K.R. Dittrich Engineering Databases - Connecting Islands of Automation Through Databases (Hardcover, 1990 ed.)
K.R. Dittrich; Edited by Jose L. Encarnacao; Assisted by J.L. Encarnacao; Edited by Peter C. Lockemann; Assisted by W. Fischer, …
R2,779 Discovery Miles 27 790 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Automation is nothing new to industry. It has a long tradition on the factory floor, where its constant objective has been to increase the productivity of manufacturing processes. Only with the advent of computers could the focus of automation widen to include administrative and information-handling tasks. More recently, automation has been extended to the more intellectual tasks of production planning and control, material and resource planning, engineering design, and quality control. New challenges arise in the form of flexible manu facturing, assembly automation, and automated floor vehicles, to name just a few. The sheer complexity of the problems as well as the state of the art has led scientists and engineers to concentrate on issues that could easily be isolated. For example, it was much simpler to build CAD systems whose sole objective was to ease the task of drawing, rather than to worry at the same time about how the design results could be interfaced with the manufacturing or assembly processes. It was less problematic to gather statistics from quality control and to print reports than to react immediately to first hints of irregularities by inter facing with the designers or manufacturing control, or, even better, by auto matically diagnosing the causes from the design and planning data. A heav- though perhaps unavoidable - price must today be paid whenever one tries to assemble these isolated solutions into a larger, integrated system."

Learning Electricity and Electronics with Advanced Educational Technology (Hardcover, 1993 ed.): Michel Caillot Learning Electricity and Electronics with Advanced Educational Technology (Hardcover, 1993 ed.)
Michel Caillot
R5,327 Discovery Miles 53 270 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The objective of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop "Learning electricity and electronics with advanced educational technology" was to bring together researchers coming from different domains. Electricity education is a domain where a lot of research has already been made. The first meeting on electricity teaching was organized in 1984 by R. Duit, W. Jung and C. von Rhoneck in Ludwigsburg (Germany). Since then, research has been going on and we can consider that the workshop was the successor of this first meeting. Our goal was not to organize a workshop grouping only people producing software in the field of electricity education or more generally in the field of physics education, even if this software was based on artificial intelligence techniques. On the contrary, we wanted this workshop to bring together researchers involved in the connection between cognitive science and the learning of a well defined domain such as electricity. So during the workshop, people doing research in physics education, cognitive psychology, and artificial intelligence had the opportunity to discuss and exchange. These proceedings reflect the different points of view. The main idea is that designing a learning environment needs the confrontation of different approaches. The proceedings are organized in five parts which reflect these different aspects.

R3,766 Discovery Miles 37 660 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

TECHNOLOGICAL CHANGES AND HUMAN RESOURCES SET Coordinated by Patrick Gilbert The accelerating pace of technological change (AI, cobots, immersive reality, connected objects, etc.) calls for a profound reexamination of how we conduct business. This requires new ways of thinking, acting, organizing and collaborating in our work. Faced with these challenges, the Human and Social Sciences have a leading role to play, alongside others, in designing, supporting and implementing these digital transformation projects. Their ambition is to participate in the development of innovative and empowering devices, that is to say, systems that are truly at the service of human beings and their activity, that empower these professionals to take action and that also provide occupational health services. This book takes a multidisciplinary look at the challenges of these digital transformations, making use of occupational psychology, ergonomics, sociology of uses, and management sciences. This viewpoint also helps provide epistemological, methodological and empirical insights to better understand and support the changes at work.

Leakage in Nanometer CMOS Technologies (Hardcover, 2006 ed.): Siva G. Narendra, Anantha P. Chandrakasan Leakage in Nanometer CMOS Technologies (Hardcover, 2006 ed.)
Siva G. Narendra, Anantha P. Chandrakasan
R4,179 Discovery Miles 41 790 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The goal of Leakage in Nanometer CMOS Technologies is to provide ample detail so that the reader can understand why leakage power components are becoming increasingly relevant in CMOS systems that use nanometer scale MOS devices. Leakage current sources at the MOS device level including sub-threshold and different types of tunneling are discussed in detail. The book covers promising solutions at the device, circuit, and architecture levels of abstraction. Manifestation of these MOS device leakage components at the full chip level depends considerably on several aspects including the nature of the circuit block, its state, its application workload, and Process/Voltage/Temperature conditions. The sensitivity of the various MOS leakage sources to these conditions are described from the first principles. The resulting manifestations are discussed at length to help the reader understand the effectiveness of leakage power reduction solutions under these different conditions. Case studies are presented to highlight real world examples that reap the benefits of leakage power reduction solutions. mitigate increases in the leakage components as technology scales.

Nonnegative Matrix and Tensor Factorizations - Applications to Exploratory Multi-way Data Analysis and Blind Source Seperation... Nonnegative Matrix and Tensor Factorizations - Applications to Exploratory Multi-way Data Analysis and Blind Source Seperation (Hardcover)
A Cichocki
R3,544 Discovery Miles 35 440 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides a broad survey of models and efficient algorithms for Nonnegative Matrix Factorization (NMF). This includes NMF's various extensions and modifications, especially Nonnegative Tensor Factorizations (NTF) and Nonnegative Tucker Decompositions (NTD). NMF/NTF and their extensions are increasingly used as tools in signal and image processing, and data analysis, having garnered interest due to their capability to provide new insights and relevant information about the complex latent relationships in experimental data sets. It is suggested that NMF can provide meaningful components with physical interpretations; for example, in bioinformatics, NMF and its extensions have been successfully applied to gene expression, sequence analysis, the functional characterization of genes, clustering and text mining. As such, the authors focus on the algorithms that are most useful in practice, looking at the fastest, most robust, and suitable for large-scale models.

Key features: Acts as a single source reference guide to NMF, collating information that is widely dispersed in current literature, including the authors' own recently developed techniques in the subject area.Uses generalized cost functions such as Bregman, Alpha and Beta divergences, to present practical implementations of several types of robust algorithms, in particular Multiplicative, Alternating Least Squares, Projected Gradient and Quasi Newton algorithms.Provides a comparative analysis of the different methods in order to identify approximation error and complexity.Includes pseudo codes and optimized MATLAB source codes for almost all algorithms presented in the book.

The increasing interest in nonnegative matrix and tensor factorizations, as well as decompositions and sparse representation of data, will ensure that this book is essential reading for engineers, scientists, researchers, industry practitioners and graduate students across signal and image processing; neuroscience; data mining and data analysis; computer science; bioinformatics; speech processing; biomedical engineering; and multimedia.

Mathematical Principles of Signal Processing - Fourier and Wavelet Analysis (Hardcover, 2002 ed.): Pierre Bremaud Mathematical Principles of Signal Processing - Fourier and Wavelet Analysis (Hardcover, 2002 ed.)
Pierre Bremaud
R2,578 Discovery Miles 25 780 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Fourier analysis is one of the most useful tools in many applied sciences. The recent developments of wavelet analysis indicate that in spite of its long history and well-established applications, the field is still one of active research. This text bridges the gap between engineering and mathematics, providing a rigorously mathematical introduction of Fourier analysis, wavelet analysis and related mathematical methods, while emphasizing their uses in signal processing and other applications in communications engineering. The interplay between Fourier series and Fourier transforms is at the heart of signal processing, which is couched most naturally in terms of the Dirac delta function and Lebesgue integrals. The exposition is organized into four parts. The first is a discussion of one-dimensional Fourier theory, including the classical results on convergence and the Poisson sum formula. The second part is devoted to the mathematical foundations of signal processing ¿ sampling, filtering, digital signal processing. Fourier analysis in Hilbert spaces is the focus of the third part, and the last part provides an introduction to wavelet analysis, time-frequency issues, and multiresolution analysis. An appendix provides the necessary background on Lebesgue integrals.

Signal Analysis and Prediction (Hardcover, 1998 ed.): Ales Prochazka, N.G. Kingsbury, P.J.W. Payner, J. Uhlir Signal Analysis and Prediction (Hardcover, 1998 ed.)
Ales Prochazka, N.G. Kingsbury, P.J.W. Payner, J. Uhlir
R3,061 Discovery Miles 30 610 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Methods of signal analysis represent a broad research topic with applications in many disciplines, including engineering, technology, biomedicine, seismography, eco nometrics, and many others based upon the processing of observed variables. Even though these applications are widely different, the mathematical background be hind them is similar and includes the use of the discrete Fourier transform and z-transform for signal analysis, and both linear and non-linear methods for signal identification, modelling, prediction, segmentation, and classification. These meth ods are in many cases closely related to optimization problems, statistical methods, and artificial neural networks. This book incorporates a collection of research papers based upon selected contri butions presented at the First European Conference on Signal Analysis and Predic tion (ECSAP-97) in Prague, Czech Republic, held June 24-27, 1997 at the Strahov Monastery. Even though the Conference was intended as a European Conference, at first initiated by the European Association for Signal Processing (EURASIP), it was very gratifying that it also drew significant support from other important scientific societies, including the lEE, Signal Processing Society of IEEE, and the Acoustical Society of America. The organizing committee was pleased that the re sponse from the academic community to participate at this Conference was very large; 128 summaries written by 242 authors from 36 countries were received. In addition, the Conference qualified under the Continuing Professional Development Scheme to provide PD units for participants and contributors.

"European industry has already developed successful standards in the past, and I am very con?dent that on the basis of DVB-H, Mobile TV services can developtheeconomiesofscaletheyneedfortake-upacrossEuropeandaround the world," With these words of EU's Telecom Commissioner Viviane Reding, DVB-H is destined to be a dominating mobile TV technology in Europe and even in the world. I was ?rst getting in touch with the DVB technology when I was doing my PhD research in Brunel University in UK in 2002. At that time DVB-T was already a mature and widely used digital broadcast technology and anyone could easily buy a DVB-T receiver in the market to try the digital broadcast signals that have been already broadcasted in UK since 1998. Then the DVB technology world changed dramatically. As a more ?exible and robust terr- trial broadcast system targeting handsets, DVB-H was developed based on DVB-T. In 2003 the DVB-H community were continuously working to ?n- ize the standard. Finally in November 2004 DVB-H was adopted as an ETSI standard EN 302 304. I was lucky to see all these changes when I was doing my PhD research in DVB technology. And I was very proud to be involved in the di?erent DVB-H research projects since the beginning of the DVB-H standard development stage. I was also lucky enough that I am one of the ?rst persons who ?nished PhD degree by focusing on DVB-H research.
