Principles of Electrical Measurement (Paperback): Slawomir Tumanski Principles of Electrical Measurement (Paperback)
Slawomir Tumanski
R2,065 Discovery Miles 20 650 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The field of electrical measurement continues to grow, with new techniques developed each year. From the basic thermocouple to cutting-edge virtual instrumentation, it is also becoming an increasingly "digital" endeavor. Books that attempt to capture the state-of-the-art in electrical measurement are quickly outdated. Recognizing the need for a text devoted to the major areas underlying modern electrical measurement, Slawomir Tumanski developed Principles of Electrical Measurement. This text builds a solid foundation in the necessary background concepts and fundamentals needed to develop and use modern electrical instruments. The author first introduces the fundamentals-including main terms and definitions, methods of estimating accuracy and uncertainty, and standards of electrical quantities-and the classical methods of measurement. He then delves into data acquisition, signal conditioning, and signal processing for both analog and digital signals. The final chapter examines computer measuring systems and virtual measurement techniques. By focusing on the aspects that are common to all types of electrical measurement, the book ensures a solid understanding that can be easily applied in practice. Whether used as an introduction to the field or as a reference to the essential concepts, Principles of Electrical Measurement provides the knowledge necessary to develop measurement solutions for any application.

Archiving has become an increasingly complex process. The challenge is no longer how to store the data but how to store it intelligently, in order to exploit it over time, while maintaining its integrity and authenticity. Digital technologies bring about major transformations, not only in terms of the types of documents that are transferred to and stored in archives, in the behaviors and practices of the humanities and social sciences (digital humanities), but also in terms of the volume of data and the technological capacity for managing and preserving archives (Big Data). Archives in The Digital Age focuses on the impact of these various digital transformations on archives, and examines how the right to memory and the information of future generations is confronted with the right to be forgotten; a digital prerogative that guarantees individuals their private lives and freedoms.

Electronic Media and Industrialized Nations: A Comparative Study (Hardcover, 1st ed): Browne Electronic Media and Industrialized Nations: A Comparative Study (Hardcover, 1st ed)
Browne
R1,800 Discovery Miles 18 000 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Electronic Media and Industrialized Nations" considers the approaches that industrialized nations have taken to introduce, develop, control, and use electronic media. Browne compares and contrasts through detailed case studies, the experiences of several nations--France, Germany (both East and West), the Soviet Union and Russia, and the Netherlands--by presenting them in light of the political, economic, cultural, geographical, and demographic factors that both shape and reflect society. He then compares the pros and cons of those experiences, adds specific examples from still other industrialized nations, and proposes an "ideal" system as a way of focusing attention on what the media could and should do to play supportive roles in society.

Browne readily acknowledges his own biases. He makes it abundantly clear that he believes those who regulate, administer, produce, and receive have an obligation to understand how the electronic media function and how the media should and can follow standards that will better ensure their responsibility for the development of healthy societies.

While the present work is based on Browne's award-winning "Comparing Broadcast Systems," it goes much further in terms of its coverage of such subjects as government-media relationships, minorities and the media, uses of the Internet, and the possible influence of "media barons," the European Union, and transnational corporations. Where the two Germanys and the Soviet Union/Russia are concerned, he provides an account of the role of the media before, during, and after both German unification and the collapse of the Soviet Union. He also places greater emphasis on how media portrayal of religion, class, language, ethnicity, and political affiliation provide us with images of the relative health of civil society.

Energy Stabilisation of Electrostatic Accelerators (Hardcover, New): J. Takacs Energy Stabilisation of Electrostatic Accelerators (Hardcover, New)
J. Takacs
R7,448 Discovery Miles 74 480 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Electrostatic accelerators, such as the Van de Graaf generator, are among the most established and well--developed particle accelerators. One of the key issues in the maturation of these accelerators has been the development of methods used to stabilize the energies of the particles they produce. Energy Stabilization of Electrostatic Accelerators presents a comprehensive overview of the key methods of stabilizing the energy of ions produced by electrostatic accelerators. After giving comprehensive background information on the subject, it explains the basis of high voltage generation, covering both the Van de Graaf charge transfer and the Crockcroft Walton voltage multiplier principle. This is followed by a description of the various methods used to detect the fluctuation in the energy of the accelerated ions. The later chapters describe the various ways used to stabilize the energy of the ions, gradually leading the reader to models of more complicated multi--loop stabilizers, composed from the simple models derived in the previous chapters. Some of the information on the mathematical modeling of physical phenomena applied in the stabilization has not been published before. Also featured is a whole chapter devoted to the problem of modulating the energy of the ions to a predetermined way. Energy Stabilization of Electrostatic Accelerators has been written with the accelerator designer and user in mind, but will also prove extremely useful to researchers and graduate students engaged in accelerator--based research, both pure and applied, whose interests lie in improving accelerator performance. It assumes only a basic knowledge of feedback and control system theory and Laplace transformation, which makes it readily understandable for any readers with physics and electronic engineering backgrounds.

Disarmament and Decommissioning in the Nuclear Domain (Hardcover): J-.C. Amiard Disarmament and Decommissioning in the Nuclear Domain (Hardcover)
J-.C. Amiard
R3,735 Discovery Miles 37 350 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Following the acquisition of the atomic bomb by five states, the United Nations began drafting several treaties to limit nuclear proliferation. These efforts failed, as four more states also acquired nuclear weapons. In a similar vein, an attempt to limit atomic weapons - primarily within the two superpowers - was initiated. While the number of weapons has decreased, the new bombs now being manufactured are more powerful and more precise, negating any reduction in numbers. In the field of civil nuclear use, all nuclear facilities (reactors, factories, etc.) have a limited lifespan. Once a plant is permanently shut down, these facilities must be decommissioned and dismantled. These operations are difficult, time-consuming and costly. In addition, decommissioning generates large volumes of radioactive waste of various categories, including long-lived and high-activity waste. Risks to the environment and to health are not negligible during decommissioning. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) have produced numerous publications with recommendations. Each state has its own decommissioning strategy (immediate or delayed) and final plan for the site - whether it be returning it to greenfield status or obtaining a nuclear site license with centuries-long monitoring.

Electrical Engineering/Electromagnetics The Plane Wave Spectrum Representation of Electromagnetic Fields A classic reissue in the IEEE/OUP Series on Electromagnetic Wave Theory Donald G. Dudley, Series Editor I am pleased to see that the IEEE Press and OUP have secured the rights to republish this excellent monograph ... a long-cherished exposition on the angular spectrum concept.' -- James R. Wait The purpose of this book is to explain how general electromagnetic fields can be represented by the superposition of plane waves traveling in diverse directions, and to illustrate the way in which this plane wave spectrum representation can be put to good use in treating various characteristic problems belonging to the classical theories of radiation, diffraction and propagation. The book offers a largely unified theory of a range of problems, solutions to all of which are obtained in forms at least patently capable of yielding numerical results by straightforward means. The reader is assumed to be competent at integration in the complex plane, but otherwise the discussion is virtually self-contained. The aim is to furnish the student of electromagnetic theory with a useful technical tool and a comparatively compact account of some interesting aspects of his discipline. The contents are presented in two parts. The first, under the heading of Theory, covers Preliminaries, Plane wave representations; and Supplementary theory. The second, with the heading Application, deals with Diffraction by a plane screen; Propagation over a uniform plane surface; Propagation over a two-part plane surface; The field of a moving point charge; and Sources of anisotropic media. Also in the series... FieldComputation by Moment Method An IEEE/OUP classic reissue R. F. Harrington, Syracuse University 1995, Hardcover, 240 pp. Waves and Fields in Inhomogeneous Media An IEEE/OUP classic reissue Weng Cho Chew, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign 1995, Hardcover, 632 pp. Methods in Electromagnetic Wave Propagation Second Edition D.S.
