A first chapter on the general principles of signal handling in electronic circuits is followed by descriptions of amplifiers using field-effect and bipolar transistors and integrated circuit op-amps, written from the point of view of the engineering student building up a system. Subsequent chapters discuss the principles of applying negative and positive feedback in amplifiers, leading the reader to the final two chapters covering digital circuits and their applications. All chapters conclude with a solved problem followed by a number of practice questions from various universities to which answers are given. This new edition, like the first, will prove a valuable text for first and second year courses in universities and polytechnics on electronics and electrical engineering and will be useful to practising engineers and scientists who need to use analogue and digital chips in the course of their work.

Gallium Arsenide Technology in Europe (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1994): Joseph Mun, Abdoul A.... Gallium Arsenide Technology in Europe (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1994)
Joseph Mun, Abdoul A. M'baye
R1,436 Discovery Miles 14 360 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Some of the key milestones in GaAs technology were ftrst demonstrated in Europe, for example, the ftrst GaAs Field Effect Transistor (FET) with microwave performance and the ftrst GaAs Microwave Monolithic Integrated Circuit (MMIC). The strategic nature of GaAs technology has attracted heavy investment from many vertically integrated companies in information technology, communication and defence, as well as from semiconductor manufacturers world wide. Europe always faced strong competition from the USA and Japan and until 1984, European GaAs activities were fragmented amongst various players, with some of the activities loosely grouped into national programmes. In 1984, a number of collaborative projects were established under the European Speciftc Programme on Information Technology (ESPRIT) which crossed national boundaries. It has launched a new and exciting phase for GaAs in Europe and few of those involved at the time could have imagined where such collaboration may lead. In the beginning of those early projects, collaboration was approached with caution and suspicion because after all, many members of a newly formed project team were previously competitors. However, common technology problems soon became apparent and the opportunity to discuss these problems with engineers and scientists from different backgrounds had quickly broken down all barriers. Today, collaboration has become an essential element in European R&D. Collaboration has strengthened the GaAs community and helped to accelerate its growth against difftcult times. This book examines the importance of GaAs technology in Europe and illustrates some of the recent activities pursued under various ESPRIT projects.

J.G. Taylor, C.L.T. Mannion
R1,377 Discovery Miles 13 770 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This volume consists of proceedings of the one-day conference on "Coupled Oscillating Neurons" held at King's College, London on December 13th, 1990. The subject is currently of increasing interest to neurophysiologists, neural network researchers, applied mathematicians and physicists. The papers attempt to cover the major areas of the subject, as the titles indicate. It is hoped that the appearance of the papers (some of which have been updated since their original presentation) indicates why the subject is becoming of great excitement. A better understanding of coupled oscillating neurons may well hold the key to a clearer appreciation of the manner in which neural networks composed of such elements can control complex behaviour from the heart to consciousness. Frequency-domain Approach To Hopf Bifurcation Analysis: Continuous Time-delayed Systems (Hardcover): Franco Sebastian Gentile,... Frequency-domain Approach To Hopf Bifurcation Analysis: Continuous Time-delayed Systems (Hardcover)
Franco Sebastian Gentile, Jorge Luis Moiola, Guanrong Chen
R3,397 Discovery Miles 33 970 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book is devoted to the study of an effective frequency-domain approach, based on systems control theory, to compute and analyze several types of standard bifurcation conditions for general continuous-time nonlinear dynamical systems. A very rich pictorial gallery of local bifurcation diagrams for such nonlinear systems under simultaneous variations of several system parameters is presented. Some higher-order harmonic balance approximation formulas are derived for analyzing the oscillatory dynamics in small neighborhoods of certain types of Hopf and degenerate Hopf bifurcations. The frequency-domain approach is then extended to the large class of delay-differential equations, where the time delays can be either discrete or distributed. For the case of discrete delays, two alternatives are presented, depending on the structure of the underlying dynamical system, where the more general setting is then extended to the case of distributed time-delayed systems. Some representative examples in engineering and biology are discussed.

Pascal for Electronic Engineers (Paperback, New ed of 2 Revised ed): J. Attikiouizel Pascal for Electronic Engineers (Paperback, New ed of 2 Revised ed)
J. Attikiouizel
R1,391 Discovery Miles 13 910 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In the last few years there has been a tremendous increase in the number of Pascal courses taught at various levels in schools and universities. Also with the advances made in electronics it is possible today for the majority of people to own or have access to a microcomputer which invariably runs BASIC and Pascal. A number of Pascal implementations exist and in the last two years a new Pascal specification has emerged. This specification has now been accepted as the British Standard BS6192 (1982). This standard also forms the technical content of the proposed International Standard IS07185. In addition to a separate knowledge of electronic engineering and programming a marriage of engineering and computer science is required. The present method of teaching Pascal in the first year of electronic engineering courses is wasteful. Little, if any, benefit is derived from a course that only teaches Pascal and its use with abstract examples. What is required is continued practice in the use of Pascal to solve meaningful problems in the student's chosen discipline. The purpose of this book is to make the use of standard Pascal (BS6192) as natural a tool in solving engineering problems as possible. In order to achieve this aim, only problems in or related to electrical and elec tronic engineering are considered in this book. The many worked examples are of various degrees of difficulty ranging from a simple example to bias a transistor to programs that analyse passive RLC networks or synthesise active circuits."

An Introduction to High Voltage Experimental Technique (Hardcover, 1978): Dieter Kind An Introduction to High Voltage Experimental Technique (Hardcover, 1978)
Dieter Kind
R1,502 Discovery Miles 15 020 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

High-voltage technology is a field of electrical engineering the scientific principles of which are essentially found in Physics and which, by its application, is intimately linked with industrial practice. It is concerned with the physical phenomena and technical problems associated with high voltages. The properties of gases and plasmas, as well as liquid and solid insulating materials, are of fundamental significance to high-voltage technology. However, despite all progress, the physical phenomena observed in these media can only be incompletely explained by theoretical treatment, and so experiment constitutes the foreground of scientific research in this field. Teaching and research in high-voltage technology thus rely mainly upon experimental techniques when dealing with problems. Recognition of this fact is the conceptual basis for the present book. It is primarily intended for students of electrical engineering and aims to provide the reader with the most important tools for the experimental approach to problems in high-voltage technology. An attempt has been made here to indicate important practical problems of testing stations and laboratories, and to suggest solutions. The book should therefore also prove to be a help to the work of the practising engineer. The theoretical considerations are correlated with the experiments of a high-voltage practical course, which are described in great detail. The treatment assumes as much familiarity with the subject as may be expected from 3rd year students of electrical engineering.

It's a Gas - The Magnificent and Elusive Elements that Expand Our World (Hardcover): Mark Miodownik It's a Gas - The Magnificent and Elusive Elements that Expand Our World (Hardcover)
Mark Miodownik
R585 R515 Discovery Miles 5 150 Save R70 (12%) Ships in 5 - 10 working days

Why are most gases invisible, odourless and tasteless? Why do some poison us and others make us laugh? And why do some power our engines while others make drinks fizzy? In It's a Gas, Mark Miodownik masterfully reveals an invisible world through his unique brand of scientific storytelling.

Taking us back to that exhilarating – and often dangerous – moment when scientists tried to work out exactly what they had discovered, Miodownik shows that gases are the formative substances of our modern world, each with its own weird and wonderful personality.

We see how seventeenth-century laughing gas parties led to the first use of anaesthetics in surgery, how the invention of the air valve in musical instruments gave us bicycles, cars and trainers, and how gases made us masters of the sea (by huge steamships) and skies (via extremely flammable balloons). This delight of a book reveals the immense importance of gases to modern civilisation.
