Some of the key milestones in GaAs technology were ftrst demonstrated in Europe, for example, the ftrst GaAs Field Effect Transistor (FET) with microwave performance and the ftrst GaAs Microwave Monolithic Integrated Circuit (MMIC). The strategic nature of GaAs technology has attracted heavy investment from many vertically integrated companies in information technology, communication and defence, as well as from semiconductor manufacturers world wide. Europe always faced strong competition from the USA and Japan and until 1984, European GaAs activities were fragmented amongst various players, with some of the activities loosely grouped into national programmes. In 1984, a number of collaborative projects were established under the European Speciftc Programme on Information Technology (ESPRIT) which crossed national boundaries. It has launched a new and exciting phase for GaAs in Europe and few of those involved at the time could have imagined where such collaboration may lead. In the beginning of those early projects, collaboration was approached with caution and suspicion because after all, many members of a newly formed project team were previously competitors. However, common technology problems soon became apparent and the opportunity to discuss these problems with engineers and scientists from different backgrounds had quickly broken down all barriers. Today, collaboration has become an essential element in European R&D. Collaboration has strengthened the GaAs community and helped to accelerate its growth against difftcult times. This book examines the importance of GaAs technology in Europe and illustrates some of the recent activities pursued under various ESPRIT projects.
This new edition of Ahmed and Spreadbury's excellent textbook Electronics for Engineers provides, like the first edition, an introduction to electronic circuits covering the early part of degree level courses in electronics and electrical engineering. This volume consists of proceedings of the one-day conference on "Coupled Oscillating Neurons" held at King's College, London on December 13th, 1990. The subject is currently of increasing interest to neurophysiologists, neural network researchers, applied mathematicians and physicists. The papers attempt to cover the major areas of the subject, as the titles indicate. It is hoped that the appearance of the papers (some of which have been updated since their original presentation) indicates why the subject is becoming of great excitement. This book is devoted to the study of an effective frequency-domain approach, based on systems control theory, to compute and analyze several types of standard bifurcation conditions for general continuous-time nonlinear dynamical systems. A very rich pictorial gallery of local bifurcation diagrams for such nonlinear systems under simultaneous variations of several system parameters is presented. Some higher-order harmonic balance approximation formulas are derived for analyzing the oscillatory dynamics in small neighborhoods of certain types of Hopf and degenerate Hopf bifurcations.The frequency-domain approach is then extended to the large class of delay-differential equations, where the time delays can be either discrete or distributed. For the case of discrete delays, two alternatives are presented, depending on the structure of the underlying dynamical system, where the more general setting is then extended to the case of distributed time-delayed systems. Some representative examples in engineering and biology are discussed.
This is the proceedings of the SIGAL International Symposium on Algorithms held at CSK Information Education Center, Tokyo, Japan, August 16-18, 1990. SIGAL (Special Interest Group on Algorithms) was organized within the Information Processing Society of Japan in 1988 to encourage research in the field of discrete algorithms, and held 6-8 research meetings each year. This symposium is the first international symposium organized by SIGAL. In response to the call for papers, 88 papers were submitted from around the world. The program committee selected 34 for presentation at the symposium. The symposium also included 5 invited lectures and 10 invited presentations. In the last few years there has been a tremendous increase in the number of Pascal courses taught at various levels in schools and universities. Also with the advances made in electronics it is possible today for the majority of people to own or have access to a microcomputer which invariably runs BASIC and Pascal. A number of Pascal implementations exist and in the last two years a new Pascal specification has emerged. This specification has now been accepted as the British Standard BS6192 (1982). This standard also forms the technical content of the proposed International Standard IS07185. In addition to a separate knowledge of electronic engineering and programming a marriage of engineering and computer science is required. The present method of teaching Pascal in the first year of electronic engineering courses is wasteful. Little, if any, benefit is derived from a course that only teaches Pascal and its use with abstract examples. What is required is continued practice in the use of Pascal to solve meaningful problems in the student's chosen discipline. The purpose of this book is to make the use of standard Pascal (BS6192) as natural a tool in solving engineering problems as possible. In order to achieve this aim, only problems in or related to electrical and elec tronic engineering are considered in this book. The many worked examples are of various degrees of difficulty ranging from a simple example to bias a transistor to programs that analyse passive RLC networks or synthesise active circuits." |
