Today, an ever-expanding set of human activities, ranging from business processes to healthcare to education and research, is dependent upon the Internet. Most processes involve a workflow, the coordinated execution of multiple activities. In a given application, once the key stages of the workflow have been isolated, an infrastructure to coordinate the handling of individual cases is necessary. Internet-Based Workflow Management shows how to understand, develop, and use societal services for process coordination in an information grid with a rich set of hardware and software resources. In such a semantic web, individual services offered by autonomous service providers can be composed to perform the complex tasks involved in emerging new applications. The book is designed to be accessible to IT practitioners and researchers as well as to those without formal training in computer science. Businesspeople, scientists, engineers, or anyone else involved in the development of Internet-centric applications will find the book an invaluable resource. The coverage includes:
In the final chapter of the book, Dan Marinescu brings together all these elements in a case study that shows the step-by-step development of middleware for process coordination. This middleware is available under an open source license at www.wiley.com.
The field of electrical measurement continues to grow, with new techniques developed each year. From the basic thermocouple to cutting-edge virtual instrumentation, it is also becoming an increasingly "digital" endeavor. Books that attempt to capture the state-of-the-art in electrical measurement are quickly outdated. Recognizing the need for a text devoted to the major areas underlying modern electrical measurement, Slawomir Tumanski developed Principles of Electrical Measurement. This text builds a solid foundation in the necessary background concepts and fundamentals needed to develop and use modern electrical instruments. The author first introduces the fundamentals-including main terms and definitions, methods of estimating accuracy and uncertainty, and standards of electrical quantities-and the classical methods of measurement. He then delves into data acquisition, signal conditioning, and signal processing for both analog and digital signals. The final chapter examines computer measuring systems and virtual measurement techniques. By focusing on the aspects that are common to all types of electrical measurement, the book ensures a solid understanding that can be easily applied in practice. Whether used as an introduction to the field or as a reference to the essential concepts, Principles of Electrical Measurement provides the knowledge necessary to develop measurement solutions for any application.

This book was written to take the mystery out of ESD. It explains how ESD is generated, and how it affects electronic equipment. This explanation brings ESD out of the realm of black magic and into the sphere of science. Even more important, this book explains how to design equipment to prevent ESD problems. This discussion of ESD design solutions not only includes design guidelines, but explains why they work. It also exposes myths that have developed about ESD and why they are incorrect. Finally, this book discusses the methods of testing for ESD problems. This discussion covers not only the test hardware, but also test procedures and methods that ensure meaningful results. The information contained in the following pages should help the reader prevent many (if not most) ESD problems.

Dedicated to the development of intelligent sensors and systems, this original volume is an essential resource for engineers working in this vital research area.
Electrical Engineering/Communications/Information Theory "The Berlekamp article alone will make this book worth having." --David Forney, Vice President, Motorola Codex Reed-Solomon Codes and Their Applications Edited by Stephen B. Wicker, Georgia Institute of Technology and Vijay K. Bhargava, University of Victoria On the Voyager spacecraft, they were responsible for sending clear pictures of the planets back to earth. They have also played a key role in the digital audio revolution. They are Reed-Solomon error codes: the extremely powerful codes that provide critical error control for many different types of digital communications systems. This outstanding collection of thirteen original articles written by leading researchers in the field provides a uniquely comprehensive overview of the history and practical applications--some never before published--of these important codes. "Electronic Media and Industrialized Nations" considers the
approaches that industrialized nations have taken to introduce,
develop, control, and use electronic media. Browne compares and
contrasts through detailed case studies, the experiences of several
nations--France, Germany (both East and West), the Soviet Union and
Russia, and the Netherlands--by presenting them in light of the
political, economic, cultural, geographical, and demographic
factors that both shape and reflect society. He then compares the
pros and cons of those experiences, adds specific examples from
still other industrialized nations, and proposes an "ideal" system
as a way of focusing attention on what the media could and should
do to play supportive roles in society. Browne readily acknowledges his own biases. He makes it
abundantly clear that he believes those who regulate, administer,
produce, and receive have an obligation to understand how the
electronic media function and how the media should and can follow
standards that will better ensure their responsibility for the
development of healthy societies. While the present work is based on Browne's award-winning "Comparing Broadcast Systems," it goes much further in terms of its coverage of such subjects as government-media relationships, minorities and the media, uses of the Internet, and the possible influence of "media barons," the European Union, and transnational corporations. Where the two Germanys and the Soviet Union/Russia are concerned, he provides an account of the role of the media before, during, and after both German unification and the collapse of the Soviet Union. He also places greater emphasis on how media portrayal of religion, class, language, ethnicity, and political affiliation provide us with images of the relative health of civil society.
Electrostatic accelerators, such as the Van de Graaf generator, are among the most established and well--developed particle accelerators. One of the key issues in the maturation of these accelerators has been the development of methods used to stabilize the energies of the particles they produce. Energy Stabilization of Electrostatic Accelerators presents a comprehensive overview of the key methods of stabilizing the energy of ions produced by electrostatic accelerators. After giving comprehensive background information on the subject, it explains the basis of high voltage generation, covering both the Van de Graaf charge transfer and the Crockcroft Walton voltage multiplier principle. This is followed by a description of the various methods used to detect the fluctuation in the energy of the accelerated ions. The later chapters describe the various ways used to stabilize the energy of the ions, gradually leading the reader to models of more complicated multi--loop stabilizers, composed from the simple models derived in the previous chapters. Some of the information on the mathematical modeling of physical phenomena applied in the stabilization has not been published before. Also featured is a whole chapter devoted to the problem of modulating the energy of the ions to a predetermined way. Energy Stabilization of Electrostatic Accelerators has been written with the accelerator designer and user in mind, but will also prove extremely useful to researchers and graduate students engaged in accelerator--based research, both pure and applied, whose interests lie in improving accelerator performance. It assumes only a basic knowledge of feedback and control system theory and Laplace transformation, which makes it readily understandable for any readers with physics and electronic engineering backgrounds.
