Executive functions are a set of thinking, problem-solving, and
self-control skills that tell the brain what to do, and this book
demonstrates the ways kids use executive functions in school, at
home, and in their other activities and shows how these skills can
be improved through sustained effort. Beginning with a test to
determine executive-functioning strengths and weaknesses, the book
then explores in detail eight distinct sets of skills, including
planning, organization, focus, time management, self-control,
flexibility, memory, and self-awareness. In addition to giving an
overview of each executive-functioning skill and how these skills
are used in the real world, the book--intended as a self-directed
learning guide for students themselves--also provides teens tools
and tips for improving executive functions, including how to use
video games, iPods, cell phones, and other electronic media to
their advantage. A section for teachers and parents who may be
dealing with a teenager with one or more executive dysfunctions is
also included, as well as information for teens on how to recognize
when they need help and where to go for help when a problem arises.
Sharing 15 detailed histories from his casebook and the innovative
practices he uses in his therapeutic sessions, Metzner shows how
the psychological problems we confront often derive from factors
not considered in conventional psychotherapy, such as birth trauma,
unconscious imprints from prenatal existence, memories from past
lives, ancestral and familial soul connections, and even psychic
intrusions. The case histories he describes include a wide spectrum
of practices, such as the use of quiet meditative retreat, guided
regressions, as well as imagery visualizations amplified by
entheogens. He describes how tuning in with the spiritual overtones
of our being and the karmic undercurrents of our lives can resolve
issues such as a fear of intimacy, help heal the after-effects of
abuse and abortion, reconcile estranged parental and ancestral
relationships, dissolve fears left over from past incarnations, and
convert malignant presences into protective allies. In addition to
guided meditations, visualizations, and yogic light-fire exercises,
the practices in his psychotherapy sessions at times include the
selective use of small amounts of psychedelics, mind-expanding
substances functioning to amplify awareness of the subtler realms
of consciousness. Part of each case history gives a description of
the particular visualization used, adding to the book's practical
use as a guidebook for transpersonal psychotherapists.

Sigils are symbols designed for a specific magical purpose. They
are symbolic icons that are condensed representations of more
complex ideas or information. It was from astrology that the word
sigil became acknowledged as an occult device with great power.
Traditionally, a sigil is a line diagram symbolizing the
unpronounceable name of a spirit, a form of pictorial signature of
a spirit. To know the name of a spirit gives the magician the
ability to command the spirit. They are a part of the ritual of
ceremonial magic used for the conjuration of angels, demons and
other spirits. In more modern times, the sigil has been reinvented
as a Monogram of Thought, a graphic symbol created with the sole
purpose of fulfilling the magicians desired outcome, a personal
desire or set of desires. The term sigil is derived from the Latin
words sigilla, sigillum and signum and in terms of magic it is
generally understood to mean sign, seal, signa - ture or little
picture. Sigils are also called by differ ent names like seal and
pentacle. A seal is a sigil placed in a circle, it gives the
conjuror the ability to capture the spirit and command it. A
pentacle is a type of talisman used in magic evocation for
protection. All religious symbols count as sigils and they date
back to prehistory when humans first used images to infer intent -
magic will - making it possible for the creator of the sigil to
receive something or make something change in the universe,
themselves, in other people or to summon and control outside
entities. They were part of our ancestor's pictorial language in an
age of symbolic literacy. In the ancient and classic worlds of the
pre-Christian era, the term magic referred to arcane or esoteric
knowledge. If someone had the knowledge to ward off illness or
misfortune or gain favour with the gods by whatever means, they
were considered to be a form of magician. The ability to produce
magic sigils to ward off evil, counteract the devil and offer
protection from sorcerers and witches continued unabated into the
early Judeo-Christian tradition. The Cross being the upmost symbol
of protection. One difference between the priest and the sorcerer
was that one employed magic for religious purposes whilst the other
used it for their own ends. The concept of the sigil became
established during the Late Medieval and Renaissance period
1350-1700. During this time, magicians used sigils to call upon
angels, demons and other spirits. Each spirit had its own sigil
representing its 'essence', a sort of signature or spiritual
autograph. These are the high magic sigils associated with black
magic. Magicians created and studied these symbols, publishing
lists of them in magical training books called grimoires. By the
beginning of the 20th century, science and rationale had played a
monumental role in the re-realizing of magic practise.
Self-professed adepts such as Aleistair Crowley and Austin Osman
Spare, rejected the traditions of Renaissance magic, taking the
sigil out of ritual and employing them in their personal quests of
mystical exploration, as symbols of intent

Can metta take me all the way to Enlightenment? How much meditation
is good for you? Why visualize an Enlightened being? Can you tell
if meditation is changing you? All of these questions and very many
more are tackled in this substantial compilation of
Sangharakshita's teachings on meditation. First published in 2012,
this volume draws from previously published works and from the
unpublished transcripts of seminars on a wide range of Buddhist
texts, from the Pali canon to the songs of Milarepa. The dialogue
form is a reminder that teaching is a communication, a creative
meeting between the depth and breadth of Sangharakshita's knowledge
and experience and the willingness of students to ask the kinds of
questions any meditator would like to ask if they had the chance
(or the nerve). Discussions reveal how Sangharakshita learned the
practices on which his system of meditation - 'an organic, living
system' - is based and how that system has evolved over the years.
Amid much curiosity about dhyana and Insight, and explorations of
how to deal with fear or distraction, doubt, drowsiness or desire,
topics also include such matters as whether it's good to meditate
in the open air and whether to include your least favourite
politician in your metta bhavana. To this edition some extra
material on 'just sitting' and the guru yoga has been added.
Whether dipped into, consulted on a specific subject or read from
cover to cover, the collection offers practical, inspiring and
encouraging advice for new and experienced meditators alike. It is
deeply imbued with the Buddhist vision of the role of meditation in
the quest for Enlightenment.

beneath the skin. Can anyone overcome the fear of dying? Drawing on
the wisdom of the ancients, from the Aztecs and the Iliad to the
Irish Wake, Nine Rules to Conquer Death provides the answer to
those eternal mortal fears and longings. Kevin Toolis distils
insights drawn from millennia of human experience into a profound

dead. Nine Rules up-ends every fear and presumption we hold

Rules is a guidebook like no other.
