nevertheless simple enough for beginning level players ready for
their first chamber music experience. String Quartets for Beginning

Keyboard artists in the time of J.S. Bach were simultaneously
performers, composers, and improvisers. By the twentieth century,
however, the art of improvisation was all but lost. Today,
vanishingly few classically-trained musicians can improvise with
fluent, stylistic integrity. Many now question the system of
training that leaves players dependent upon the printed page, and
would welcome a new approach to musicianship that would enable
modern performers to recapture the remarkable creative freedom of a
bygone era. The Pianist's Guide to Historic Improvisation opens a
pathway of musical discovery as the reader learns to improvise with
confidence and joy. Useful as either a college-level textbook or a
guide for independent study, the book is eminently practical.
Author John Mortensen explains even the most complex ideas in a
lucid, conversational tone, accompanied by hundreds of musical
examples. Mortensen pairs every concept with hands-on exercises for
step-by-step practice of each skill. Professional-level virtuosity
is not required; players of moderate skill can manage the material.
Suitable for professionals, conservatory students, and avid
amateurs, The Pianist's Guide leads to mastery of improvisational
techniques at the Baroque keyboard.
A single piece of repertoire is the primary focus for each chapter,
with preparatory exercises providing the necessary technical work
building towards the piece. Each lesson covers four main topics,
which are systematically developed: practice methods, registration,
fingering and pedalling, and historically-informed interpretation.
The method is for keyboard players of any age who are establishing
first steps at the organ with or without a teacher. It will also
serve more experienced organists who want to improve their
technique.

With the shift towards online education, teaching and learning

successfully foster students. Pedagogy Development for Teaching

nature of teaching and learning music in the online environment at
the post-secondary level. Featuring a broad range of topics such as
online and face-to-face instruction, instructional design, and
learning management system, this book is geared towards educators,
professionals, school administrators, academicians, researchers,
and students seeking current research on designing online music
courses using a social constructivist framework.
The renaissance flute, with its rich history, stunning repertoire,
and mellow tone, has attracted a significant following among
flutists, whether they specialize in modern flute or historical
instruments. Yet, actually delving into the study of renaissance
flute has proven a challenge - there exists a confusing array of
editions of renaissance music, specialized (and often expensive)
facsimiles of manuscripts and early prints, and in unfamiliar
notations, while at the same time there is a dearth of resources
for beginners. Confronting this challenge with the first ever
practitioners' handbook for renaissance flute, Kate Clark and
Amanda Markwick offer flutists of all levels a clear and accessible
introduction to the world and repertoire of the instrument. In The
Renaissance Flute: A Contemporary Guide, Clark and Markwick cover
all aspects, from practicalities such as buying and maintaining the
instrument, to actual music for solo and group performance, to
theory designed to improve the understanding and playing of
renaissance polyphony. This approach enables students to immerse
themselves at their own pace and build on their skills with each
chapter. With nearly 40 full pages of exercises, and a companion
website with recorded examples and filmed instructions from the
authors, The Renaissance Flute provides professionals and newcomers
alike a new entryway into the world and practice of renaissance
music.

musical journey by teaching with segmented presentation of new
concepts and introducing ensemble playing. Isolating concepts and
teaching them individually helps facilitate understanding of the

divided into several sections that introduces concepts separately
and provides plenty of practice and performance opportunities to
reinforce each lesson. Visit www.alfred.com/soundinnovations for
