Cognitive Linguistics and Humor Research (Hardcover): Geert Brone, Kurt Feyaerts, Tony Veale Cognitive Linguistics and Humor Research (Hardcover)
Geert Brone, Kurt Feyaerts, Tony Veale
R3,858 Discovery Miles 38 580 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

To what extent can Cognitive Linguistics benefit from the systematic study of a creative phenomenon like humor? Although the authors in this volume approach this question from different perspectives, they share the profound belief that humorous data may provide a unique insight into the complex interplay of quantitative and qualitative aspects of meaning construction.

Over the past few decades, the book series Linguistische Arbeiten [Linguistic Studies], comprising over 500 volumes, has made a significant contribution to the development of linguistic theory both in Germany and internationally. The series will continue to deliver new impulses for research and maintain the central insight of linguistics that progress can only be made in acquiring new knowledge about human languages both synchronically and diachronically by closely combining empirical and theoretical analyses. To this end, we invite submission of high-quality linguistic studies from all the central areas of general linguistics and the linguistics of individual languages which address topical questions, discuss new data and advance the development of linguistic theory.

Juhani Rudanko
R1,644 Discovery Miles 16 440 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores the grammar of to infinitives and gerundial -ing clauses, which is a central area at the interface of syntax and semantics, against the background of what has been called the Great Complement Shift. Over the course of six chapters, the author explores the semantic properties of constructions where the general spread of gerundial -ing clauses occurs at the expense of to infinitives. The author draws on large electronic corpora, ensuring that new perspectives are opened on the basis of authentic corpus evidence. He identifies trends of variation and change in the use of the two constructions and proposes The Choice Principle, an innovative perspective on the semantics of to infinitives and gerundial -ing complements. This book will be of interest to researchers and students working on English grammar or the recent history of English grammar.

Yearbook of Morphology 1999 (Hardcover, 1999 ed.): G. E. Booij, Jaap Van Marle Yearbook of Morphology 1999 (Hardcover, 1999 ed.)
G. E. Booij, Jaap Van Marle
R4,538 Discovery Miles 45 380 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A revival of interest in morphology has occurred during recent years. The Yearbook of Morphology series, published since 1988, has proven to be an eminent support for this upswing of morphological research, since it contains articles on topics which are central in the current theoretical debates which are frequently referred to. The Yearbook of Morphology 1999 focuses on diachronic morphology, and shows, in a number of articles by renowned specialists, how complicated morphological systems develop in the course of time. In addition, this volume deals with a number of hotly debated issues in theoretical morphology: its interaction with phonology (including Optimality Theory), the relation between inflection and word formation, and the formal modeling of inflectional systems. A special feature of this volume is an article on morphology in sign language, a very new and exciting area of research in linguistics. The relevant evidence comes from a wide variety of languages, amongst which Germanic, Romance, and Slavic languages are prominent. Audience: Theoretical, descriptive, and historical linguists, morphologists, phonologists, and psycholinguists will find this book of interest.

I am grateful to MIT Press for permission to reproduce parts of that article here. I would like to express my appreciation to Catherine V. Chvany, who has read several versions of this manuscript over the years, and provided encouragement and invaluable comments. Thanks go also to Johanna Nichols whose careful reading and useful suggestions have improved the book. I am also deeply grateful to Joan Bresnan, Ken Hale, Morris Halle, Beth Levin, and Jane Simpson for helpful discussions of the material contained herein. For sharing their native intuitions, special thanks go to Alina Israeli, Boris Katz, and Evgenij Pinsky, and to Liza Chernyak, Volodja Gitin, Victoria Koff, Larissa Levin, Victoria Schiller, and Elena Semeka-Pankra- tova. Joyce Friedman, Beth Levin, and Jane Simpson kindly provided assistance with bibliographical references and proofreading. This manuscript was prepared using the computer facilities at Boston University, and lowe a large debt of gratitude to the following people for providing access to equipment and technical assistance: William H. Henneman, Philip Budne, Barry Shein, and Paul Blanchard. IX INTRODUCTION The study of case, once primarily of interest to philologists, has only recently begun to receive the attention it deserves from syntacticians.

The Grammar of French Quantification (Hardcover, 2011 ed.): Lena Baunaz The Grammar of French Quantification (Hardcover, 2011 ed.)
Lena Baunaz
R3,028 Discovery Miles 30 280 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is the first extensive study on French Quantification in the field of Syntax. It provides a typology of four main quantified noun phrases in French (existential, universal, negative and "wh-"), detailing their syntactic, semantic and prosodic behaviors and showing that they can be reduced to two classes Split-DP structures or Floating quantification.

Relying on syntax and semantics, the book establishes a three-way structural typology of "wh" in-situ phrases and extends it to existentials. It pays special attention to the prosodic properties associated with their different readings and proposes an analysis of the distribution of subextraction and pied-piping. Similarly based on semantic and syntactic tests, the book reveals N(egative) words to be universal Quantifiers. It proposes a new structure of N-words in terms of constituent negation and includes a detailed analysis of the difference between "not an N" and "not all the N" in French.

Derivations - Exploring the Dynamics of Syntax (Hardcover): Juan Uriagereka Derivations - Exploring the Dynamics of Syntax (Hardcover)
Juan Uriagereka
R4,490 Discovery Miles 44 900 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Derivations draws together some of the most influential work of one of the world's leading syntactitians, Juan Uriagekera. These essays provide several empirical analyses and technical solutions within the Minimalist Program. The book persues a naturalistic take on Minimalism, explicitly connecting a variety of linguistic principles and conditions to arguably analogous laws and circumstances in nature.

The Morphosyntax of Negative Markers - A Nanosyntactic Account (Hardcover): Karen De Clercq The Morphosyntax of Negative Markers - A Nanosyntactic Account (Hardcover)
Karen De Clercq
R4,443 Discovery Miles 44 430 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book applies the tools of nanosyntax to the natural language phenomenon of negation. Most work on negation is concerned with the study of sentence negation, while low scope negation or constituent negation is hardly ever systematically discussed in the literature. The present book aims to fill that gap, by investigating scopally different negative markers in a sample of 23 typologically diverse languages. A four-way classification of negative markers is argued for and it is shown how meaningful syncretism patterns arise across those four groups of negative markers in the language sample investigated. The syncretisms are meaningful in that they track the natural semantic scope of negation, and provide support to the idea that morphology is not arbitrary, but points to submorphemic structure. Consequently, this study leads to a decomposition of the negative morpheme into five privative features: Tense, Focus, Classification, Quantity and Negation proper. Finally, the book argues that sentence, constituent and lexical negation can all be treated in the same module of the grammar, i.e. syntax.

Hanne Gram Simonsen, Rolf Theil Endresen
R4,491 Discovery Miles 44 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The book contains a selection of papers from the conference The Verb in Cognitive Linguistics, held at Gran, Norway in June, 1998. The papers in this book are all written within a cognitive linguistics framework, concentrated around different linguistic aspects of the verb. The two keynote papers (by Richard A. Hudson and Ronald W. Langacker) serve as an introduction to this main theme, providing a broad perspective and a general, theoretical background from word grammar and cognitive grammar, respectively. The remaining ten papers are more closely aiming at addressing morphological, syntactic and semantic aspects of the verb, illustrated through a variety of languages and research areas, including, i.a., adult language processing, language acquisition, connectionist modelling, and typology. A majority of the papers describe different aspects of Norwegian - a language not earlier investigated at such a scale within cognitive linguistics. Norwegian offers valuable contributions through being closely related to English, yet differing in certain important and interesting ways. In addition, data from several other languages are included, among others Italian, Russian, and different African languages, providing a wider typological range.

Elements of Control - Structure and Meaning in Infinitival Constructions (Hardcover): Idan Landau Elements of Control - Structure and Meaning in Infinitival Constructions (Hardcover)
Idan Landau
R1,531 Discovery Miles 15 310 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book offers a new outlook on the derivation and interpretation of control constructions. Bringing together novel data and observations, it argues that Obligatory Control comes in two varieties: Exhaustive or Partial Control, the latter obtaining when PRO properly includes the controller. This distinction, arguably universal, is tightly linked to the tense specification of the infinitive. Non-Obligatory Control, on the other hand, is structurally conditioned, obtaining only in VP-external infinitives. A detailed investigation of how control interacts with Super-Equi constructions and psychological predicates sheds new light on issues such as extraposition, argument structure, and semantic selection. This book clears up some common misconceptions about the nature of control, as well as sharpening the empirical challenges that face any comprehensive theory in this domain. Regardless of theoretical framework, scholars of syntax and semantics interested in these topics, will find this book a major contribution to the field.

A Grammar of Berbice Dutch Creole (Hardcover): Silvia Kouwenberg A Grammar of Berbice Dutch Creole (Hardcover)
Silvia Kouwenberg
R7,954 Discovery Miles 79 540 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The series builds an extensive collection of high quality descriptions of languages around the world. Each volume offers a comprehensive grammatical description of a single language together with fully analyzed sample texts and, if appropriate, a word list and other relevant information which is available on the language in question. There are no restrictions as to language family or area, and although special attention is paid to hitherto undescribed languages, new and valuable treatments of better known languages are also included. No theoretical model is imposed on the authors; the only criterion is a high standard of scientific quality. To discuss your book idea or submit a proposal, please contact Birgit Sievert.

Geert Booij, Jaap Van Marle
R4,521 Discovery Miles 45 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A revival of interest in morphology has taken place during recent years and the subject is seen now as a relatively autonomous subdiscipline of linguistics. As one of the important areas of theoretical research in formal linguistics, morphology has attracted linguists to investigate its relations to syntax, semantics, phonology, psycholinguistics and language change. The aim of the Yearbook of Morphology, therefore, is to support and enforce the upswing of morphological research and to give an overview of the current issues and debates at the heart of this revival.

The architecture of the human language faculty has been one of the main foci of the linguistic research of the last half century. This branch of linguistics, broadly known as Generative Grammar, is concerned with the formulation of explanatory formal accounts of linguistic phenomena with the ulterior goal of gaining insight into the properties of the 'language organ'. The series comprises high quality monographs and collected volumes that address such issues. The topics in this series range from phonology to semantics, from syntax to information structure, from mathematical linguistics to studies of the lexicon. R5,376 Discovery Miles 53 760 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume offers a selection of interface studies in generative linguistics, a valuable "one-stop shopping" opportunity for readers interested in the ways in which the various modules of linguistic analysis intersect and interact. The boundaries between the lexicon and morphophonology, between morphology and syntax, between morphosyntax and meaning, and between morphosyntax and phonology are all being crossed in this volume. Though its focus is on theoretical approaches, experimental studies are also included. The empirical focus of many of the contributions is on Hungarian, and several chapters respond to work published by Istvan Kenesei, to whom the volume is dedicated.
