Functional Categories and Parametric Variation (Paperback): Jamal Ouhalla Functional Categories and Parametric Variation (Paperback)
Jamal Ouhalla
R1,563 Discovery Miles 15 630 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book explores the idea that functional categories are the flesh and blood of grammar'. From within the context of the Principles and Parameters framework put forward by Chomsky and others, Jamal Ouhalla develops the argument that much of what we understand by the term grammar and grammatical variation involves functional categories in a crucial way. His main thesis is that most, if not all, of the information which determines the major grammatical processes and relations (movement, agreement, case, etc.) and consequently parametric (or crosslinguistic) variation is associated with functional categories. By identifying parameters with a limited set of lexical properties associated with a well-defined group of functional categories, the book offers a new and highly constrained version of the theory of Lexical Parametrization. Dr Ouhalla begins by identifying a set of lexical properties which distinguish functional categories from substantives, arguing that each of them represents a parameter in its own right. He then goes on to argue on the basis of evidence drawn from a broad range of languages that functional categories, most of which are bound morphemes, behave in important respects like independent syntactic categories, and therefore should be assigned a full categorial status on a par with substantives. The remainder of the book contains detailed discussions of how this conclusion, together with the theory of Lexical Parametrization developed, account naturally for some major typological differences having to do mainly with word order in sentences and noun phrases. Although the various discussions it contains are conducted within the Chomskyan framework, Functional Categories and Parametric Variation is comprehensible to linguists of all theoretical persuasions. It is an original and important contribution to syntactic theory in general.

Explorations in Maximizing Syntactic Minimization (Hardcover): Samuel D. Epstein, Hisatsugu Kitahara, T. Daniel Seely Explorations in Maximizing Syntactic Minimization (Hardcover)
Samuel D. Epstein, Hisatsugu Kitahara, T. Daniel Seely; Series edited by Carlos Otero
R4,597 Discovery Miles 45 970 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume presents a series of papers written by Epstein, Kitahara and Seely, each of which explores fundamental linguistic questions and analytical mechanisms proposed in recent minimalist work, specifically concerning recent analyses by Noam Chomsky. The collection includes eight papers by the collaborators (one with Miki Obata), plus three additional papers, each individually authored by Epstein, Kitahara and Seely, that cover a range of related topics including: the minimalist commitment to explanation via simplification; the Strong Minimalist Thesis; strict adherence to simplest Merge, Merge (X, Y) = {X, Y}, subject to 3rd factor constraints; and state-of-the-art concepts and consequences of Chomsky's most recent proposals. For instance, the volume clarifies and explores: the properties of Merge, feature inheritance and Agree; the nature of phases, cyclicity and countercyclicity; the properties of Transfer; the interpretation of features and their values and the role formal features play in the form and function of syntactic operations; and the specific properties of derivations, partially ordered rule application, and the nature of interface representations. At the cutting edge of scholarship in generative syntax, this volume will be an essential resource for syntax researchers seeking to better understand the minimalist program.

The Pseudo-Cleft Construction in English (Hardcover): F. R. Higgins The Pseudo-Cleft Construction in English (Hardcover)
F. R. Higgins
R5,366 Discovery Miles 53 660 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This work, first published in 1979, was a doctoral dissertation submitted to the Department of Foreign Literatures and Linguistics of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on June 22nd 1973. The ostensible central topic of this essay is a construction which is generally known as the "pseudo-cleft" construction. This essay aims to provide an overall picture of the construction, and show why another treatment of it is necessary. This book will be of interest to those pursuing the topic of copular sentences.

A Comparative Typology of English and German - Unifying the Contrasts (Hardcover): John Hawkins A Comparative Typology of English and German - Unifying the Contrasts (Hardcover)
John Hawkins
R3,999 Discovery Miles 39 990 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

First published in 1986, this book draws together analyses of English and German. It defines the contrasts and similarities between the two languages and, in particular, looks at the question of whether contrasts in one area of the grammar is systematically related to contrasts in another, and whether there is any 'directionality' or unity to contrast throughout grammar as a whole. It is suggested that there is, and that English and German can serve as a case study for a more general typology of languages than we now have. This volume will be of interest to a wide range of linguists, including students of Germanic languages; language typologists; generative grammarians attempting to 'fix the parameters' on language variation;' historical linguists; and applied linguists.

Towards a Contextual Grammar of English - The Clause and its Place in the Definition of Sentence (Hardcover): Eugene Winter Towards a Contextual Grammar of English - The Clause and its Place in the Definition of Sentence (Hardcover)
Eugene Winter
R3,994 Discovery Miles 39 940 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This study, first published in 1982, attempts to show that the foundations of a contextual grammar of English must be firmly based on an adequate definition of the sentence. This book will be of interest to students of language and linguistics.

Definiteness and Indefiniteness - A Study in Reference and Grammaticality Prediction (Hardcover): John Hawkins Definiteness and Indefiniteness - A Study in Reference and Grammaticality Prediction (Hardcover)
John Hawkins
R4,291 Discovery Miles 42 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

First published in 1988, this book is concerned with the definite and indefinite articles in English. It provides an integrated pragmatic-semantic theory of definite and indefinite reference, on the basis of which, many co-occurance restrictions between articles and non-modifiers are explained. At the general theoretical level, this book looks at the role of semantics in the prediction of all and only the grammatical sentences of a language. A generalisation is proposed uniting semantic oppositions underlying ungrammaticality with syntactic oppositions between conditions of application on transformational generative rules. A procedure is suggested for distinguishing semantic from syntactic causes of ungrammaticality. At a more particular level, the book explores the nature of reference. It examines an important selection of subjects such as the contrast between definiteness and indefiniteness, the relationship between definite and demonstrative reference, and the relationship between pragmatic and logical aspects of determining meaning.

Meaning and the English Verb (Hardcover, 3rd edition): Geoffrey N. Leech Meaning and the English Verb (Hardcover, 3rd edition)
Geoffrey N. Leech
R4,206 Discovery Miles 42 060 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Every language has its peculiar problems of meaning for the foreign learner. In the English language, some of the biggest yet most fascinating problems are concentrated in the area of the finite verb phrase: in particular, tense, aspect, mood and modality. Meaning and the English Verb describes these fields in detail for teachers and advanced students of English as a foreign or second language. This new third edition uses up-to-date examples to show differences and similarities between American and British english, reflecting a great deal of recent research in this area. It also takes account of the subtle changes which are taking place in the language today. In print for over 30 years, Meaning and the English Verb has established itself as a recognised authority on the meaning and use of verb constructions in English. This updated third edition will ensure that it remains an invaluable text for teachers and students of English worldwide.

The Grammar of Identity - Intensifiers and Reflexives in Germanic Languages (Paperback): Volker Gast The Grammar of Identity - Intensifiers and Reflexives in Germanic Languages (Paperback)
Volker Gast
R1,596 Discovery Miles 15 960 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

English self-forms and related words from other Germanic languages (e.g. Dutch zelf, Swedish sjalv, etc.) are used in two different functions: as 'intensifiers' (e.g. The president himself made the decision) and as markers of reflexivity (John criticized himself). On the basis of a comparative syntactic and semantic analysis, this book addresses the question of why two such apparently different functions can be expressed by the same word. This question is answered by showing that both intensifying and reflexive self-forms can be analysed as expressing the concept of 'identity'. In the first part of The Grammar of Identity, the most central facts concerning the distribution of intensifiers in Germanic languages are surveyed and a detailed syntactic and semantic analysis is provided. It is shown that all instances of intensifiers can be analysed as expressions of an identity function. The second part of the book offers an analysis of reflexive self-forms which is based on recent theories of reflexivity, modifying these in some important respects. In particular, the distribution of reflexive self-forms is explained with reference to semantic properties of the sentential environment. In this way, it can be shown that reflexive self-forms - like intensifiers - can be analysed as expressions of an identity function. In addition to providing a thorough comparative description of the hitherto poorly described area of intensifiers in Germanic languages, this book offers an answer to a long standing question in descriptive and theoretical linguistics, namely why self-forms are used in two apparently different functions. By combining analytical methods from syntax, lexical semantics and sentence semantics the study moreover contributes to an understanding of the interaction between structure, meaning and context in a central area of lexico-grammar.

Words - An Integrational Approach - An Integrational Approach (Paperback): Hayley G. Davis Words - An Integrational Approach - An Integrational Approach (Paperback)
Hayley G. Davis
R1,560 Discovery Miles 15 600 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Aims to reorient the study of language by taking into serious consideration the perspective on linguistic matters taken by lay speakers themselves, as a response to the now inescapable conclusion that traditional linguistic theory, with its focus on revealing 'the facts of language in general', cannot handle the necessary indeterminacy of what is said and understood.

A Unification of Morphology and Syntax - Investigations into Romance and Albanian Dialects (Paperback): M. Rita Manzini,... A Unification of Morphology and Syntax - Investigations into Romance and Albanian Dialects (Paperback)
M. Rita Manzini, Leonardo M. Savoia
R1,571 Discovery Miles 15 710 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This highly original and innovative analysis focuses on the morphosyntax of dialects comprising Italy, Corsica and the Italian and Romansch-speaking areas of Switzerland. The empirical base used in the book includes a wealth of previously unknown or understudied data from a variety of Romansch dialects, whilst the theoretical framework is extremely sophisticated and up-to-date. Linguists of all genres will be fascinated by Manzini and Savoia's radical conclusion: they claim that their work suggests a unification of morphology and syntax.

Case, Argument Structure, and Word Order (Paperback): Shigeru Miyagawa Case, Argument Structure, and Word Order (Paperback)
Shigeru Miyagawa; Series edited by Carlos Otero
R1,711 Discovery Miles 17 110 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Over the years, a major strand of Miyagawa's research has been to study how syntax, case marking, and argument structure interact. In particular, Miyagawa's work addresses the nature of the relationship between syntax and argument structure, and how case marking and other phenomena help to elucidate this relationship. In this collection of new and revised pieces, Miyagawa expands and develops new analyses for numeral quantifier stranding, ditransitive constructions, nominative/genitive alternation, "syntactic" analysis of lexical and syntactic causatives, and historical change in the accusative case marking from Old Japanese to Modern Japanese. All of these analyses demonstrate an intimate relation among case marking, argument structure, and word order.

Grammaticalization and English Complex Prepositions - A Corpus-based Study (Paperback): Sebastian Hoffmann Grammaticalization and English Complex Prepositions - A Corpus-based Study (Paperback)
Sebastian Hoffmann

Modern Chinese Parts of Speech - Classification Theory (Paperback): Guo Rui Modern Chinese Parts of Speech - Classification Theory (Paperback)
Guo Rui
R1,289 Discovery Miles 12 890 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

What is the essence of a part of speech? Why is it difficult to classify parts of speech? What are the bases and criteria for classifying them? How should they be classified? In doing so, how should a conversional word be dealt with? How should nomonalization be treated? These are just some of the questions answered in this book. The classification of parts of speech in Chinese is a tough job due to the language's lack of morphological differences. Based on the analysis of nearly 40,000 Chinese characters, this book proposes that, essentially, a part of speech is not of distributional type and that its intrinsic basis is an expressional function and the semantic type. Essentially, large categories such as substantive words, predicate words and modification words are classes of words classified according to their expressional functions. Basic categories such as nouns, verbs and adjectives are classes that combine semantic types with syntactical functions. In classifying parts of speech, the book pays attention not to identifying a single distributive characteristic that is internally universal and externally exclusive but to clustering the grammatical functions that have the same classification value through the "reflection-representation" relationship among distribution, expressional function and semantic type (distribution reflects expressional function and semantic type, which are, in turn, represented as distribution), thereby identifying the classification criteria. It uses distributional compatibility and the correlation principle to analyze which distributional differences represent differences in parts of speech and which do not. In this way, grammatical functions that have equal classification values are collected into one equivalent function cluster, each of which represents one part of speech. The book uses four strategies to classify parts of speech, namely the homogeneity strategy, the homomorphical strategy, the priority homomorphical strategy and the consolidation strategy. It will be a valuable reference for Chinese linguistic researchers and students as well as Chinese learners.

Lexical Ontological Semantics (Paperback): Guoxiang Wu, Yulin Yuan Lexical Ontological Semantics (Paperback)
Guoxiang Wu, Yulin Yuan
R1,285 Discovery Miles 12 850 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Lexical Ontological Semantics introduces ontological methods into lexical semantic studies with the aim of giving impetus to various fields of endeavours which envision and model the semantic network of a language. Lexical ontological semantics (LOS) provides a cognition-based computation-oriented framework in which nouns and predicates are described in terms of their semantic knowledge and models the mechanism in which the noun system is coupled with the predicate system. It expands the scope of lexical semantics, updates methodologies to semantic representation, guides the construction of semantic resources for natural language processing, and develops new theories for human-machine interactions and communications.

Second Language Sentence Processing (Hardcover): Alan Juffs, Guillermo A Rodriguez Second Language Sentence Processing (Hardcover)
Alan Juffs, Guillermo A Rodriguez
R4,440 Discovery Miles 44 400 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This addition to the Cognitive Science and Second Language Acquisition series presents a comprehensive review of the latest research findings on sentence processing in second language acquisition. The book begins with a broad overview of the core issues of second language sentence processing research and then narrows its focus by dedicating individual chapters to each of these key areas. While a number of publications have discussed research findings on knowledge of formal syntactic principles as part of theories of second language acquisition, there are fewer resources dedicated to the role of second language sentence processing in this context. This volume will act as the first full-length literature review of the field on the market.
