We've sort of flirted with greatness, R.E.M.'s Peter Buck admitted. But we've yet to make a record as good as Big Star's Third. Although Big Star were together for less than four years and had little commercial success, the influence of their three original albums - numbered 1 "Record", "Radio City", and "Third" - continues to grow. Big Star bucked all the musical trends of the 70s. In an era of glam and prog rock they wrote catchy, radio-friendly power-pop tunes that remain influential today. Artists as diverse as Primal Scream, R.E.M., The Bangles, The Posies, Teenage Fanclub, Jeff Buckley, and Wilco have spoken about the Big Star legacy. In the decade since the original version of this book was published, Big Star have made a belated fourth album, "In Space", and released an acclaimed four-disc retrospective, "Keep An Eye On The Sky". The band have also lost two original members, an influential producer, and the photographer of their iconic logo. But interest in the group is as high as ever in the 21st century, with new bands such as Yo La Tengo and Hot Chip - and even pop superstar Katy Perry - carrying the flame. Now fully updated, and drawing on firsthand interviews with the band, family members, friends, and the major players at Ardent Records, this is the definitive history of rock's forgotten band.
In this addition to the Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture, two well-respected New Testament scholars interpret the Gospel of John in its historical and literary setting as well as in light of the Church's doctrinal, liturgical, and spiritual tradition. They unpack the wisdom of the Fourth Gospel for the intellectual and spiritual transformation of its readers and connect the Gospel with a range of witnesses throughout the whole history of Catholicism. This volume, like each in the series, is supplemented by features designed to help readers understand the Bible more deeply and use it more effectively in teaching, preaching, evangelization, and other forms of ministry.

St Albans has many faces. It's a vibrant, modern Hertfordshire city with attractive buildings and surprising architecture. It's a buzzing market town on Wednesdays and Saturdays. It's a cathedral city with the abbey at its heart, the Easter Pilgrimage that draws thousands of pilgrims from near and far, and the Alban Pageant with larger-than-life puppets that recreate Alban's story along its streets every June. A rich seam of history runs from the time of Julius Caesar and Roman Verulamium, through the time of King Offa of Mercia and the monastery built to honour Alban in 793 to the twelfth-century Sopwell Nunnery with its adventurous abbess, author of a book on fishing, thought to be the first book written in the English language by a woman. Yet there is the darker side with murder and mayhem at its core. Today's St Albans Registry Office was once a prison where hangings were carried out and prisoners allotted gruelling tasks. The extensive fifteenth-century traveller and chronicler Fynes Moryson found St Albans 'a pleasant towne, full of faire innes'. It is still that and much more. This book takes you on an alphabetical tour of St Albans through the ages.
Advice from a recognized master penman how adults can improve letterforms, legibility, legibility and make written language both fun and expressive. Unlike traditional primary grade handwriting manuals that seek to introduce the basic techniques of written language to young students, The Art of Cursive Penmanship presents the subject of handwriting as a valuable and spontaneous skill for the adult. In this context, it remains an intimate ability of communication and expression; a personal asset for life. By internationally recognized master penman, Michael R. Sull, The Art of Cursive Penmanship focuses on practical self-study techniques designed to accommodate anyone's personal or professional schedule. With determined and consistent use, the daily application of these methods will result in progressive improvement of letterforms, legibility, letter spacing, creating one's signature, the appearance of an individual's penmanship, and the physical action of handwriting through proper posture, correct use of hand and arm muscles, paper position, and a comfortable speed of writing. Recommendations are also offered on the most efficient writing instruments to use, so that handwriting becomes a pleasant activity to be enjoyed, rather than an action merely to be effected.

In select cases this book also offers some new concepts, seeking to address familiar concerns that have not been fully articulated within the discipline. This dictionary provides a synthesis of information currently available but only in a diverse array of sources. Through judicious choice and careful scrutiny, the author has gathered together a very handy ready-reference in the same style as his companion volumes, Dictionary of Energy and Fuels and Dictionary of Fire Protection Engineering. Although the material covered is diverse, particular entries are focused and linked with each other so as to provide a good degree of comprehensiveness. For example, there is much information on well engineering including example calculations, and this is linked to wells at particular oil fields. There is also much on offshore production and again principles are linked, often by calculation, with particular offshore production platforms. The North Sea features, but not exclusively, and the vast bulk of the information presented is relevant to all locations. Commercial products, including those for oil well maintenance, are featured and information on the web from suppliers is expanded by drawing on the physics and chemistry of how such products work.
There is a lot of talk about heresy these days. The frequency and volume of accusations suggest that some Christians have lost a sense of the gravity of the word. On the other hand, many believers have little to no familiarity with orthodox doctrine or the historic distortions of it. What's needed is a strong dose of humility and restraint, and also a clear and informed definition of orthodoxy and heresy. Know the Heretics provides an accessible "travel guide" to the most significant heresies throughout Christian history. As a part of the KNOW series, it is designed for personal study or classroom use, but also for small groups and Sunday schools wanting to more deeply understand the foundations of the faith. Each chapter covers a key statement of faith and includes a discussion of its historical context; a simple explanation of the unorthodox teaching, the orthodox response and a key defender; reflections of contemporary relevance; and discussion questions.
